Reading on paper and reading on screen: the state of research

Enrico Meglioli

Forms of reading have changed many times over the centuries. Today, after the rise of the Internet and with the widespread diffusion of increasingly more affordable and sophisticated digital technologies, we are experiencing a new, radical change in the way we produce and consume written texts, which have in large part moved from the ‘physical’ world of paper to the ‘virtual’ world of digital screens. When the new digital technologies first appeared, the benefits they provided in terms of quantity and quality of information they conveyed in written, visual, audio, and video format spurred many policymakers and leaders in the fields of education and publishing to encourage a complete shift from the paper medium to the digital one. This choice, however, largely underestimated the impact that the reading medium has on the readers’ cognitive behaviours and even neurological structures. New studies have started to shed light on the different mechanisms underlying reading on paper and reading on screen, and their specific features. This paper aims at offering a review of the main lines of research concerning the differences between reading on paper and on screen, and what recommendations can be drawn for teachers and all those involved in the literacy education of the new generations, but also for contemporary readers, who have now the opportunity to access more information and stories and in more formats than ever, but can be disoriented by the variety of reading media, and uncertain about how to take the best out of it.Three will be the main focuses of the review: research interested in showing the different impacts of the reading media at the neurological level; research on the physical and haptic differences between reading on paper and reading on screen; and the results of some of the more comprehensive studies on the impacts of the reading media on comprehension and learning, especially for the young generations of readers.

Rogério Mugnaini, Mery Piedad Zamudio Igami, Rosaly Favero Krzyzanowski

Homosexual parenthood in children’s literature

Miroslav Jindra

Homosexuality in children’s literature is still a controversial topic in many countries of the world. Not only are people afraid to talk about this theme with children, they do not know how. The history of this topic in children’s literature dates back to the 80s of the 20th century, when the first books were published. In 20th century, human society went through many changes which were reflected in all the fields of art (theatre, fine arts, literature, etc.). Writers had a need to familiarise children readers with ‘taboo topics’ such as homosexuality, death, drugs, etc. They wanted to introduce homosexuals as ordinary men and women, who live their own lives with their joys and worries. Today, we can find three main themes in children’s literature: coming out, the life of homosexuals and homosexual parenthood. Each theme has its own specifics and typical reader age group of children or youth. This characterisation can help us to deeper identify the topic. The literature offers children and youth better and easier cognition of the world with its differences. The aim is to learn about the history of homosexuality in children’s literature and go deeper into its individual themes, especially homosexual parenthood. Children need to know everything about life and have no taboos. Why are we afraid to talk about it?

Bürgerwissenschaften in wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken

Martin Munke, Jens Bemme

Undergraduate Students Seek Librarian Assistance Only After They Have Searched Independently Without Success

Elaine Sullo

A Review of: Vinyard, M., Mullally, C., & Colvin, J.B. (2017). Why do students seek help in an age of DIY? Using a qualitative approach to look beyond statistics. Reference & User Services Quarterly, 56(4), 257-267. http://dx.doi.org/10.5860/rusq.56.4.257 Abstract Objective – To explore how undergraduate students look for information and the reasons these students seek assistance from a librarian. Design – Qualitative research. Setting – A university in Southern California. Subjects – 10 students were interviewed: 1 freshman, 1 sophomore, 5 juniors, and 3 seniors. Methods – Students who met with a librarian for longer than 20 minutes were invited to participate in the study, and interviews were conducted within six weeks of this interaction. Semi-structured interviews were scheduled for one hour blocks and were audio-recorded and transcribed afterward. Interview data was analyzed using applied thematic analysis. The researchers used NVivo to assist with the process of coding data. Main Results – Once all transcripts were coded, the researchers identified the following six themes related to how students look for information and the reasons they asked for assistance: how students research, personal perceptions of research skills, assumptions (students’ misperceptions about library services), motivation for asking for help, path to the librarian (how students contacted librarians and their reason for selecting a particular librarian), and experience working with a librarian. Conclusion – Overall, the research results demonstrate that students prefer to conduct research independently but will consult a librarian if they are not able to find what they need, if they find the research question especially challenging, or if they have spent an unreasonable amount of time conducting research. In-class library instruction, along with professor referrals are the most effective methods for encouraging students to seek out library assistance.

Shades of Silver: Applying the Strategic Diversity Manifesto to Tennessee’s Knox County Office on Aging

Joseph Winberry

This article applies the Strategic Diversity Manifesto—originally designed for evaluating inclusion of diversity among the information resources of public libraries—to aging services. Aging services is the collection of organizations and resources that serve the fastest growing population in the world—older adults. This application is accomplished through the methods of website evaluation and participatory assessment. The result of this case study is a specific adaptation of the Strategic Diversity Manifesto to the Office on Aging in Knox County, Tennessee, U.S., indicating how aging services organizations can build on their existing services and outreach to diverse elder populations through their organizational information resources. For this study, diversity among older adults is represented specifically through the “members of ethnic and racial minority groups,” “people with disabilities,” “LGBTQ people,” “immigrants/refugees,” and “low-income people” categories.

Research Output of the Pakistani Library and Information Science Authors: A Bibliometric Evaluation of Their Impact

Anwar, Mumtaz Ali, Jan, Sajjad Ullah

This paper uses 601 cited papers of Pakistani LIS researchers with the purpose to examine the individual performance of these Library and Information Science (LIS) researchers in terms of their research output and its impact on the LIS (national/international) literature by using various bibliometric indicators. A list of 139 authors was compiled with the help of the Library, Information Science, and Technology Abstracts (LISTA) and some other sources. Data were collected from Google Scholar and SPSS version 20 was utilized in order to identify the relationship between self-citations and various performance indices of the authors. The average citations received per paper vary from 1.80 to 10.08. About half of the papers were single-authored whereas less than one-fifth were by three or more authors. The authors who worked in collaboration produced more papers and received more citations. The h-index, g-index, hI-index, hI-norm, and e-index were used to determine the rank for each author. The intra-group citations grid revealed the volume of self-citations and a small group who cite each other more due to close academic and social relationships. The correlations between self-citations and the impact indices used revealed significant differences. Findings are useful for concerned institutions regarding award, promotions, etc. Further, future research should seriously consider the self-citations and social networking of authors while examining their citations-based research performance.

„ŽYDŲ KRONIKA“ IR SUOMIJOS ŽYDŲ TAPATYBĖS FORMAVIMASIS 1918–1920 METAIS

Teuvo Laitila

Scientometric Analysis of Cloud Computing

Rosy Jan, Wasim Rashid Wani, Obaid Hafiz

(ProQuest: ... denotes formulae omitted.)IntroductionCloud computing means storing and accessing data and programs over the Internet instead of your computer's hard drive. The cloud is just a metaphor for the Internet. It goes back to the days of flowcharts and presentations that would represent the gigantic server-farm infrastructure of the Internet as nothing but a puffy, white cumulonimbus cloud, accepting connections and doling out information as it floats. (Griffith, 2013) "Cloud computing" is the next natural step in the evolution of on-demand information technology services and products. To a large extent, cloud computing will be based on virtualized resources. Cloud computing predecessors have been around for some time now, but the term became "popular" sometime in October 2007 when IBM and Google announced collaboration in that domain. This was followed by IBM's announcement of the "Blue Cloud" effort. Since then, everyone is talking about "Cloud Computing" (Vouk, 2008). Cloud computing is a service where computing is provided as a commodity, much akin to electricity or cable television. Thus, cloud computing is not about a specific technology; rather it is a step in the commoditization of IT enabled by technological advances (Iyoob, Zarifoglu, & Dieker, 2013).Bibliometrics represented a statistical approach to master the growing flood of scientific information and to analyse and to understand the cognitive characteristics of "big science" by measuring quantitative aspect of communication in science and by providing results to scientists & users outside the scientific community. There have been a number of techniques that have been evaluated during the passage of time to evaluate the resources. Bibliometrics is one of the techniques that have been adopted by the library professionals to explore the impact of any field of knowledge. While bibliometric methods are most often used in the field of library and information science, bibliometrics has wide applications in other areas. In fact, many research fields use bibliometric methods to explore the impact of their field, the impact of a set of researchers, or the impact of a particular paper. It utilizes quantitative analysis and statistics to describe patterns of publication within a given field or body of literature. Researchers may use bibliometric methods of evaluation to determine the influence of a single writer, for example, or to describe the relationship between two or more writers or works, or to identify the pattern of publication and authorship, citations used for a subject etc over a period of time. First scientometric applications were developed to improve use of bibliometric databases and extend information services. Citations were considered documented use of information & have consequently applied first in the context of librarianship, scientific information and information retrieval (Glanzel, 2008). Scientometric is the branch of science that describes the output traits in terms of organisational research structure, resource inputs and outputs, develops benchmarks to evaluate the quality of information output. it studies characterize the discipline using the growth pattern and other attributes. These studies have potential, particularly in assessing the emerging disciplines (Ramachandran, 2012). Mapping scientific fields is quite a common operation in bibliometric studies. Mapping is a study of correlation links between the past and present research work using citation analysis. Mapping is a technique used to analyze vast literature and molded in a particular form. This particular information format can be used by researcher effectively. Different elements of a bibliographic record may used to generate a map structure. Each element reveals a specific structure, unique in a sense, but always related to the structures based on other element (Mithal, Ahmad & Singh, 2005).This study, aims to capture the overall publications of cloud computing among top 10 countries and India. …

Designing and Implementing an Information Literacy Course in the Humanities

Ellen Daugman, Leslie McCall, Kaeley McMahan

As instructors in the Z. Smith Reynolds Library information literacy program at Wake Forest University, we are expanding beyond our introductory course model to teach discipline-specific information literacy courses. Z. Smith Reynolds Library initiated an information literacy program in 2002 and currently offers a 1-credit elective, taught in 15 sections per semester. Advanced discipline-specific courses were added in Spring 2008, and include courses in the social sciences, business and economics, and the sciences. As the subject specialists for art, dance, literature, music, religion and theatre, we were charged with creating a credit-bearing arts and humanities information literacy course, LIB250: Humanities Research Sources and Strategies. In addition to our arts and humanities course content and methodologies, we incorporated web2.0 technologies throughout course design and delivery in order to streamline planning and to facilitate student engagement. In our course preparation, we utilized Google Docs for collaborative brainstorming, planning, organization and self-evaluation. Our students used Google Docs for submitting their course assignments, which included a faculty or practitioner interview and the final project for the course. The project was an annotated bibliography that extended beyond books and journal articles to include additional elements such as scholarly associations, core journals, primary sources, and major special collections related to their topics. A blog was used for the course syllabus, incorporating assignment information and supplementary resources for class topics; student blogging included reflection and feedback on each lecture as well as application of class content to their research topics. A visit to the Library's Rare Books Reading Room exposed the students to the Library's unique holdings and introduced them to rare and archival resources at other libraries. Our article presents this process from start to finish, including the steps we went through to plan the course, the utilization of web2.0 applications, the course syllabus and assignments, marketing efforts, as well as the course implementation in Spring 2009 and 2010, and what we and our students learned from this process.
