A Reformation in Progress: The Path toward the Reform of Johannes Oecolampadius

Matteo Colombo, Benjamin Manig, Noemi Schürmann

This article examines the life, theological career, exegetical development, and posthumous biographies of Johannes Oecolampadius as illustrative examples of the fact that the Swiss Reformation, with all its religious movements, was far from a uniform concept in terms of its origins, purposes, and methodologies. The article explains through Oecolampadius’s example an approach to reform that was ‘in progress’, traversing the nexuses of disparate methods and exegetical priorities. Oecolampadius’s experience occupied a position at the intersection between the authority of Patristics and the principle of sola scriptura, exemplifying a balance between the past and the present of Christian tradition. The path that led Oecolampadius to become a Protestant Reformer is characterised by a gradual transition, not abrupt, not radical. His example demonstrates the methodological and ideological diversity of the Reformation, which can be observed through the prism of a single life and its intellectual periods. His conversion offers insight into how these varied approaches shaped personal engagements with Scripture, and challenges the notion of an immediate or singular evangelical ‘calling’ or ‘conviction’. This article examines a specific phase within the broader and varied trajectory of the Swiss Reformation by analysing the transformation of Oecolampadius from a biblical scholar to a preacher, and eventually to a Reformer. This case study illustrates how disparate methodologies, whether rooted in humanism or Patristics, contributed to gradual and personal evolution, ultimately giving rise to distinctive individual stances on reform. This article presents a synthesis of three distinct perspectives on the question. The first part approaches the question through the lens of church history and intellectual history; the second one utilises the history of exegesis and New Testament scholarship; and the third draws upon the perspectives of Protestant historiography, from the standpoint of social history and the history of biographies in Early Modern times.

Pachyderm Matriarchy

Mark Alvey

One of the essential backstories of Donna Haraway’s essay “Teddy Bear Patriarchy” is the biography of celebrated collector/taxidermist Carl Akeley, and his vision for the African Hall at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York. The “Authors and Versions” section of Haraway’s essay examines expedition stories recorded by Carl Akeley, his first wife, Delia Denning Akeley, and his second, Mary Jobe Akeley, to interrogate the issue of authorship, and build a case for an alleged cover-up of Delia’s contributions by “the official scientific community”. The present article pursues a reading of “Authors and Versions” against a more robust historical background, including published sources, and primary archival materials, in order to deepen, and correct, the broader story of the authorship and intellectual labour behind the AMNH African Hall, in particular the purported suppression of Delia Akeley’s voice and labour.

“Taras Bulba”: History and Textology

Igor A. Vinogradov

The article raises the fundamental problems of textual criticism of N. V. Gogol’s story “Taras Bulba.” The author of the article provides an analytical review of the translation and publishing practice of representatives of Ukrainian nationalism of the 19th–20th centuries, the features of the publications of Gogol’s story with textological “innovations” by P. A. Kulish, M. O. Lobodovsky, M. Sadovsky (N. K. Tobilevich), I. A. Malkovich. The distinctive feature of the listed cases is the ideological character of the violation of the fundamental scientific principle of choosing the final wording of the text. The preference for the publication of the early edition of Taras Bulba over the later one leads to the fact that Taras Bulba’s famous speech about partnership, the image of the path of the traitor Andriy to enemies, the words of the Cossacks before death about devotion to faith and homeland, Gogol’s prophecy about Russian tsar and the narrator’s exclamation about the irresistible Russian power became “an appendix” without author’s context. The paper clearly shows the need for a comprehensive, complex solution of textual problems and the inadmissibility of ignoring the last writer’s will.

EXPLORING THE DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF INDONESIAN TAFSIR AL-QURAN: A STUDY OF SHEIKH ABDUL LATIF SYAKUR'S AD-DA'WAH WA AL-IRSYĀD ILĀ SABĪLI AR-RASYĀD

Azizah Romadhona, Muhamad Subhi Apriantoro, Laila Muhammad Rasyid

Tafsir Al-Quran Indonesia has its own characteristics. The Koran interpretation struggles with the guide's traditions and culture. One of the exciting interpretations is ad-Da'wah wa al-Irsyād ilā Sabīli ar-Rasyād, written by Sheikh Abdul Latif Syakur. This paper attempts to explain the biography of Sheikh Abdul Latif Syakur, his methodology of interpretation, as well as the Indonesian side of his interpretation. This research is library research and is qualitative. The results showed that Sheikh Abdul Latif Syakur was a Minangkabau cleric who studied in Makkah from childhood to adulthood. This interpretation is a thematic interpretation of phrases that collect verses with the prefix wa min an-Nās, characterized by Ijtima'i adab. This interpretation also has an Indonesian side.

Creativity of P. Kulish in virtual exhibitions of libraries and archives of Ukraine

Grinberg Larisa

The purpose of the article is a consists in studying the experience of presenting documents by libraries and archives of Ukraine at virtual exhibitions for the purpose of popularizing the cultural and artistic heritage of Panteleimon Kulish. The research methodology postulates the main principles of scientific objectivity regarding the biography of P. Kulish as an outstanding Ukrainian cultural and public figure of the 19th century; performs an additional heuristic role in the librarian, archival, and information field, positively influencing the modern reading of both the life and views of an individual, as well as the course of public opinion in general. Scientific novelty. The creative heritage of P. Kulish, which is currently widely represented in virtual exhibitions of Ukrainian libraries and is still insufficiently represented on archive sites, is considered as a valuable cultural asset for the formation of Ukrainian identity in new historical conditions, which allows an impartial assessment of the contribution of an outstanding Ukrainian figure to the national and world cultures. Conclusions. The culture of perpetuation includes sociocultural practices aimed at the conscious formation and transmission of important information to the future both about a certain era and about the attitude to history in general. The virtual exhibition is an information product characterized by interactivity, multimedia, hypertext links and is a promising remote service for the interaction of libraries and archives with users, providing illustrated, factual, biographical, etc. information. The integration of the information-resource component of Ukrainian libraries and archives at the international, national and regional levels creates a consolidated electronic product of the creative heritage of P. Kulish, which is stored in various library and archive collections. Currently, the task is to organize a fruitful interaction of libraries and archives in the social and communication space in order to intensify cooperation on the worthy presentation of Ukrainian culture to the world by providing unlimited virtual access to it.

“Art and Objecthood,” Michael Fried and Jonathan Edwards

Houston Kerr

Michael Fried’s 1967 essay “Art and Objecthood” is one of the most well-known and influential pieces of art criticism ever written, and continues to generate novel interpretations. Its overtly theological cast, however, has never been the subject of close study. This article focuses on Fried’s decision to use a lengthy quotation from Perry Miller’s biography of the theologian Jonathan Edwards as his epigram, and contends that Fried’s essay is informed in significant ways by Edwards’ notions of history and grace, and characterized by wordings that reveal an active engagement with Miller’s text. Certainly, the contexts in which Edwards and Fried worked were irreducibly different. Nevertheless, an examination of the ways in which Fried drew on Miller’s text and Edwards’ ideas demonstrates that he was productively influenced by both in composing “Art and Objecthood.”

Anxiety of Textual Incarceration and Resistance to Self-Interpellation: Samuel Beckett’s Juggling with the Modes of Self-Representation

Umar Shehzad

The present study proposes that Samuel Beckett's famous reluctance to engage in the textualization of his personal life may be rooted in his apprehension towards the potential constriction of his self in the medium of language. This apprehension may have been further exacerbated by the fear of his life becoming subsumed by the written word. The notion that "we are what we say we are" postulates that one's identity is shaped by their own self-expression. In the context of biography, this notion can be extended to "we are what is said we are." Explaining his concept of interpellation, Louis Althusser, posits that various ideological apparatuses create a set of assumptions, attitudes, and desires that constitute an individual's self-identity. I argue that biography being an ideological apparatus of its own kind might do the same. Beckett's reluctance to engage in the textualization of his personal life may be a result of his desire to avoid the possibility of his self-identity being interpellated or defined by such texts. This may also explain his attempts to eliminate recognizable markers of his life from his work and his assertion of an absolute disconnection between his life and his work.

MEMÓRIAS DE MARIA HELENA DA SILVA: licenciatura em Pedagogia em tempos de ditadura (1966-1970)

Lia Machado Fiuza Fialho, Lorena Brenda Santos Nascimento, Scarlett O'hara Costa Carvalho

Ditadura Militar. Pedagogia. Faculdade de Filosofia do Ceará. MEMORIES OF MARIA HELENA DA SILVA: licensing in Pedagogy in times of dictatorship (1966-1970) Abstract Democracy in the educational context is a desire that permeates the Brazilian history, however, to be understood and valued it is important to know the history of education, especially with regard to autocratic periods that restrict freedom of expression and silence the struggle for critical and transformative education for social justice. It is questioned how the dictatorial regime interfered in the training of teachers at a higher level in Fortaleza, more specifically in the first Pedagogy class of the Faculdade de Filosofia do Ceará (FAFICE). In response, a study was developed, supported theoretically on the assumptions of cultural history and methodologically on oral history, with the aim of biography Maria Helena da Silva, with emphasis on her initial education in Pedagogy developed by the Faculdade de Filosofia do Ceará (1966- 1970). The biographical narrative of a student in the first class of the course, collected through a free interview, allowed us to infer that the training of teachers, between 1966 and 1970, at FAFICE, was strongly influenced by the undemocratic political situation, which imposed the developmentalist technicism ideals with a view to train manpower for work. This model of education trained teachers to act in accordance with traditional pedagogy, in an authoritarian manner, as holders and transmitters of static and unquestionable knowledge. Those teachers who adopted a different posture, as was the case with Helena Silva, were exonerated or persecuted, making it impossible to develop a democratic education; which demonstrates the relevance of the fight against all types of despotic government that limits freedom of expression. Hans Ionas's heuristic of life

N. P. Pugacheva

The article is devoted to the analysis of the philosophical system of the German-American philoso-pher Hans Jonas, known to the domestic reader for his work «The principle of responsibility. The Ethics Experi-ence for Technological Civilization» (1979). Particular attention is paid to the principle of the heuristic of fear as a kind of comparative futurology and philosophy of the organism. The main idea of the ontological axiology of Jonas is to recognize the immanent value of all organic life as a potentiality of freedom and morality. The relevance of addressing the declared topic is confirmed by the interest of Western philosophers and biologists in the works of Jonas. The novelty of the article is to refer to the works and ideas of the thinker unknown in Russia, devoted to the philosophy of the organism and the ethics of life, for example, the fundamental work «the Organism and free-dom», not translated into Russian. The main methods used are the author’s translation of texts and their critical analysis. The purpose of the article is to reconstruct the heuristic of life, which is undertaken by the author for the first time. The heuristic of life can be of practical significance not only in studying the biography of a philosopher, but, above all, in analyzing the philosophical problems of biology and various aspects of applied ethics related to the phenomenon of life. In the future, the author plans to develop this idea with an appeal to more original sources and concepts of followers of Hans Jonas.

Ministry at Butyrskaya transit prison: experience of priest Joseph Fudel’ (1892‒1907)

Nadezda Vinyukova

This article deals with the ministry of the Russian Orthodox Church in prisons with the experience of priest Iosif Iosifovich Fudel’ as an example. He served at Butyrskaya prison in 1892‒1907. The study draws on both archival and published materials, i.e. legislative sources, memoirs of contemporaries, essays and diary of Father Iosif himself. The article sheds light on this period of Father Iosif’s life, whose biography has not been thoroughly studied so far, and shows the role, responsibilities and capabilities of the person in the prison. It also outlines several acute issues of the penitentiary system of that time (degree of punishment, judicial faults, conditions of imprisonment, separation of families, maintenance of children, etc.) The range of the priest’s activities in the prison was truly enormous. Apart from the church service, being a spiritual preceptor, regular visits to all cells, he was responsible for the school, library, infi rmary, as well as dealt with the reunion of families and fi nancial aid to exiles. Having immersed in the milieu of “deprived” ordinary people, Father Iosif, on the one hand, became convinced of the validity of Christian worldview and high standards of the ordinary farmer who was raised in this worldview. On the other hand, he saw the imperfection of the penitentiary system, in many respects inhuman and unable to improve and revive the person. The end of the 15-year long period of his offi ce at Butyrskaya prison fell on the time of the fi rst Russian revolution which signifi cantly changed the situation and types of those imprisoned as well as requirements to the priest. Fudel’s ideas about the pastor’s mission, non-accusatory sermon, and voluntary communication with the fl ock came to be discordant with opinions of the management of the prison. As a result, he was tranferred to the parish of the church of St. Nicholas in Plotniki.

Qualified characters need to be established and nurtured from an early age. Early age is a critical period for the formation of one's character. Early childhood has distinctive characteristics, physically, psychologically, socially, morally, and so on. There are several challenges that become the main problem in character development in the global era. There are some effective tips on developing early childhood characters in the school that can be offered, including: 1) involving the moral aspects of knowing, moral feeling, and moral action, 2) reviving sunnah Dhuha prayers together, 3) kissing the hands of teachers, 4) tell the biography of the characters (5) holding regular prayers and istighosah, 6) teachers, staff, and principals should be role models for children, 7) working with parents, 8) providing rewards and sanctions, etc. The successful development of character in early childhood education can be known from everyday behaviors that appear in every child's activity.

Markuliak Larysa. Artistic Relations Between Mykola Lysenko and Modest Mencinsky Through a Prism of Epistolary. The article analyzes the artistic relations of two outstanding Ukrainian cultural figures – Mykola Lysenko and Modest Mencinsky – through the prism of their correspondence. The author concludes that the epistolary dialogues full of different topics. Here you can find lines that relate to personal problems, with which M. Lysenko delicately shares with his addressee. However, the most important topics in the correspondence turned out to be all-Ukrainian cultural issues, which are still relevant today. However, more pages in the letters are full of emotions for Ukrainian culture. N. Lysenko not only sharpens his gaze on this or that aspect, but also tries to give an answer to them, and very often even finds ways to solve seemingly extremely difficult tasks. We are facing a man endowed with an analytical mind. It is interesting to observe that the addressee of the composer is completely imbued with these questions, which M. Lysenko raises. We can conclude that the letters to the composer M. Mencinsky – the phenomenon is not accidental. Although their personal acquaintance did not happen, however, it becomes clear from correspondence how much these two artistic souls are related. In the person of Modest Mentsinsky, Nikolai Lysenko found his "own" addressee, who unconditionally checked all the sore inner thoughts. And although the composer and the singer never had to meet in life, their written dialogues are full of such deep, colourful, polyphonic content, sometimes it is impossible to achieve this in live communication. This is a unique case of the epistolary relations of two great Ukrainian ones, who took great care of the glory of Ukrainian music in the world, en- riched Europe with the musical culture of their nation. Key words: epistolary, epistolary dialogue, biography, culture, artistic relations, cultural figures, creative potential, sociopolitical life, cultural space.

Residential self-selection in travel behavior: Towards an integration into mobility biographies

J. Scheiner

The debate on residential self-selection (RSS) in the travel field seeks to answer the question of whether and to what extent spatial differences in traveling may be explained in spatial terms or to what extent, rather, they are explained by the unequal spatial distribution of people’s social and personal characteristics, particularly their neighborhood and travel preferences. Arguing primarily from a European—specifically, German— perspective, this paper makes a case for integrating the RSS-travel link into the mobility biographies approach that has emerged over the past decade. This approach addresses travel behavior as being embedded in other “spheres” of an individual’s life course, most notably the household and family biographies, the employment biography, and the residential biography. This paper argues that stability and change in travel behavior must be considered not only in concert with residential location choice, but also in the wider context of life course, in which residential choices themselves are embedded. Some unresolved issues in the RSS-travel debate that seem to be of key importance for the current debate are discussed, including various aspects of residential location choice, the role of preferences, and implications for spatial planning and transport planning. The benefits of taking a biographical perspective are also pointed out.

Europe’s Treasure Hunters. The Founding of a Network of European Diary Archives and Collections

Philippe Lejeune

Amsterdam, June 5, 2015. About fifteen people from autobiographical archives throughout Europe have come together at the Meertens Institute, which houses the Nederlands Dagboekarchief, founded in 2010 by Mirjam Nieboer and Monica Soeting.  We are in Amsterdam to found a network of European diary archives and collections. At first introductions are made. What the seven archives represented here share is not merely that they possess autobiographical documents (that would be commonplace). Their collections are solely dedicated to autobiographical writings by ordinary people, from past and present.
