Terms of (Ab)Use: An Analysis of GenAI Services

Harshvardhan J. Pandit, Dick A. H. Blankvoort, Adel Shaaban et al.

Generative AI services like ChatGPT and Gemini are some of the fastest-growing consumer services. Individuals using such services must accept their terms of use before access, and conform to these terms for continued use of the service. Established literature has shown that despite their status as legally-binding agreements, terms of use are not actually well-understood, and may contain implications that are surprising for consumers. In this paper, we analyse the terms of 6 generative AI services from the perspective of an EU-based consumer. Our findings, based on a developed codebook which we provide in the paper, reiterate known issues regarding generative AI services such as the default use of user data for training and surface new concerns regarding responsibility, liability, and rights. All terms in our analysis contained language that explicitly discards assurances regarding the quality, availability and appropriateness of the service, regardless of whether the service is free or paid. The terms also make users solely responsible for outputs meeting norms dictated by the provider, despite no information or control being provided over the functioning of the model, and at the risk of account termination. The terms further restrict users in how outputs can be used while service providers utilise both user-provided inputs as well as user-liable outputs for a wide variety of purposes at their discretion. The implications of these practices are severe, as we find consumers suffer from lack of necessary information, significant imbalance of power, and have responsibilities they cannot materially fulfil without violating the terms. To remedy this situation, we make concrete recommendations for authorities and policymakers to urgently upgrade existing consumer protection mechanisms to tackle this growing issue.

The influence of tactical models of team play on the dynamics of collective ball control indicators in football

Pavlo Perepelytsia, Volodymyr Perevoznyk, Volodymyr Paievskyi et al.

Background and purpose To select recommendations for increasing the level of collective ball control indicators in modern football, it is necessary to develop and experimentally implement tactical models of team play in the training process of football players. Purpose: to determine the influence of tactical models of team play on the dynamics of collective ball control indicators in football. Material and methods Players of the national student football team of a leading technical university of Ukraine took part in the study. The total number of subjects was 22 players, who were distributed according to equal indicators of physical and technical fitness into two groups, control and experimental. The assessment of individual technical and tactical actions of players was carried out using video analysis of control matches according to two indicators: the number and quality of ball passes to a partner. All data obtained during the experimental study were processed using well-known methods of mathematical statistics: x̄ - arithmetic mean; σ - standard deviation; m – error of representativeness of the arithmetic mean; t – reliability of the difference between the mean values (according to the Student’s t-test). Results The tactical models of team play applied in the training process of the experimental group had a positive effect on the dynamics of collective ball control indicators, in contrast to the control group of players where similar models were not used in the training process. During the 12-month experiment in all control matches, the players of the experimental group demonstrated a stable dynamic of increasing the indicators of collective control of the ball in all six 15-minute time segments of playing time (p<0.01). Conclusions The results obtained indicate the effectiveness of the application of tactical models of team play in the training process of football players. Tactical models are a new method of forming players' psychological skills of rational thinking and tactical behavior in the middle of the game space, which in the end has a positive effect on the quantitative and qualitative indicators of game activity. Team tactical models form specific psychological attitudes in players through the following steps: 1. Mastering a rational model of tactical behavior of the player, which he learns in the middle of an artificially created tactical reality for this. 2. Game practice of football players, when they are forced to reproduce a certain model of tactical behavior proposed by the coach in certain game situations within the game space. In this space, players encounter pre-prepared problem tactical situations that are solved in a rational way. 3. Finding the right solutions by players in problem situations leads to a gradual increase in the quality and quantity of indicators of collective ball control during the game.

Transparent Attested DNS for Confidential Computing Services

Antoine Delignat-Lavaud, Cédric Fournet, Kapil Vaswani et al.

Confidential services running in hardware-protected Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) can provide higher security assurance, but this requires custom clients and protocols to distribute, update, and verify their attestation evidence. Compared with classic Internet security, built upon universal abstractions such as domain names, origins, and certificates, this puts a significant burden on service users and providers. In particular, Web browsers and other legacy clients do not get the same security guaranties as custom clients. We present a new approach for users to establish trust in confidential services. We propose attested DNS (aDNS): a name service that securely binds the attested implementation of confidential services to their domain names. ADNS enforces policies for all names in its zone of authority: any TEE that runs a service must present hardware attestation that complies with the domain-specific policy before registering keys and obtaining certificates for any name in this domain. ADNS provides protocols for zone delegation, TEE registration, and certificate issuance. ADNS builds on standards such as DNSSEC, DANE, ACME and Certificate Transparency. ADNS provides DNS transparency by keeping all records, policies, and attestations in a public append-only log, thereby enabling auditing and preventing targeted attacks. We implement aDNS as a confidential service using a fault-tolerant network of TEEs. We evaluate it using sample confidential services that illustrate various TEE platforms. On the client side, we provide a generic browser extension that queries and verifies attestation records before opening TLS connections, with negligible performance overhead, and we show that, with aDNS, even legacy Web clients benefit from confidential computing as long as some enlightened clients verify attestations to deter or blame malicious actors.

Physical education and sport activity assessment tool-based machine learning predictive analysis for planification of training sessions

Mohamed Rebbouj, Said Lotfi

Background and purpose The aim of this study is to incorporte machine learning techniques in physical education activities assessment so we can plan a training session and learning cycle based on predictive analyses using machine learning algorithms. Material and methods A dataset represent the collection of physical tests (as Harvard test, Vertical and Horizontal Trigger) and activities performance (as 600 m, 1000 m, 12 min cooper) of 600 students in a secondary high school, aged between 15 and 20 years old (mean:16,21, SD:0,92), during 2021-2022 scholar year and project the predicted results on the following learning cycles in the scholar year of 2022-2023. We used Microsoft Azure Machine Learning Studio to obtain the best predictive model based on R2 score as an evaluating metric. Results Even if we focus on one metric test (as a target) with numeric values in this article, the results were promising compared to the predicted values of both physical tests and athletic performances, where we noticed some students have exceeded the expected values to reach. And the predictive analysis unveiled the more important features impacting the predicted results for the physical test. Conclusions Incorporating the Machine Learning techniques may encourage the change in the way we teach physical education and sport activities; otherwise, the assessment based on ML techniques will give a different overview on how to start a learning cycle and follow it up. The obtained predictive model provides an explication of the most impacting features on students’ performance allowing any training planification to relay on their importance respectively based on their density that affects prediction.

Towards Building Autonomous Data Services on Azure

Yiwen Zhu, Yuanyuan Tian, Joyce Cahoon et al.

Modern cloud has turned data services into easily accessible commodities. With just a few clicks, users are now able to access a catalog of data processing systems for a wide range of tasks. However, the cloud brings in both complexity and opportunity. While cloud users can quickly start an application by using various data services, it can be difficult to configure and optimize these services to gain the most value from them. For cloud providers, managing every aspect of an ever-increasing set of data services, while meeting customer SLAs and minimizing operational cost is becoming more challenging. Cloud technology enables the collection of significant amounts of workload traces and system telemetry. With the progress in data science (DS) and machine learning (ML), it is feasible and desirable to utilize a data-driven, ML-based approach to automate various aspects of data services, resulting in the creation of autonomous data services. This paper presents our perspectives and insights on creating autonomous data services on Azure. It also covers the future endeavors we plan to undertake and unresolved issues that still need attention.

The impact of internal marketing on employee attitudes and behaviours in local public sector organisations

Ana Paula Rodrigues

The purpose of this paper is to extend the knowledge on the relationships between internal marketing (IM), job satisfaction, organisational commitment, organisational trust, and job performance, by proposing and testing a model describing the impact of IM on these employees’ attitudes and behaviours. The data collection was carried out using a questionnaire applied to employees of the Portuguese local public sector (namely the five Municipalities of Alto Tâmega region). A total of 565 valid questionnaires were obtained and treated using structural equation modelling. The results show that IM positively and directly influences job satisfaction, organisational commitment, and organisational trust, but do not directly influence job performance. Job performance is influenced by organisational commitment and organisational trust, but not by job satisfaction. However, the indirect effect of job satisfaction on job performance, mediated by organisational commitment and trust, is significant. In turn, job satisfaction directly influences organisational commitment, which, in turn, has a direct impact on organisational trust. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time that a study of the relationship between IM and organisational trust has been conducted in the Portuguese local public sector context. Hopefully, the results obtained will significantly contribute to the development of the investigation of the effects of IM on this sector and to future research studies on internal marketing and public management.

Cloud Render Farm Services Discovery Using NLP And Ontology Based Knowledge Graph

Ruby Annette, Aisha Banu, Sharon Priya et al.

Cloud render farm services are the animation domain specific cloud services Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) type of cloud services that provides a complete platform to render the animation files. However, identifying the render farm services that is cost effective and also matches the functional requirements that changes for almost every project like the animation software, plug-ins required etc., is a challenge. This research work proposes an ontology-based service discovery engine named RenderSelect for the cloud render farm services. The cloud render farm ontology semantically defines the relationship among the cloud render farm services. The knowledge-based reasoning algorithms namely, the Concept similarity reasoning, Equivalent reasoning and the Numerical similarity reasoning have been applied to determine the similarity among the cloud services. The service discovery engine was evaluated for finding the services under three different scenarios namely a) with help of the ontology, b) without the help of the ontology and c) using a common search engine on the internet. The results show that the proposed service discovery engine which is specifically designed for the cloud render farm services using the ontology performs significantly better than the other two.

Deep learning and MCMC with aggVAE for shifting administrative boundaries: mapping malaria prevalence in Kenya

Elizaveta Semenova, Swapnil Mishra, Samir Bhatt et al.

Model-based disease mapping remains a fundamental policy-informing tool in the fields of public health and disease surveillance. Hierarchical Bayesian models have emerged as the state-of-the-art approach for disease mapping since they are able to both capture structure in the data and robustly characterise uncertainty. When working with areal data, e.g.~aggregates at the administrative unit level such as district or province, current models rely on the adjacency structure of areal units to account for spatial correlations and perform shrinkage. The goal of disease surveillance systems is to track disease outcomes over time. This task is especially challenging in crisis situations which often lead to redrawn administrative boundaries, meaning that data collected before and after the crisis are no longer directly comparable. Moreover, the adjacency-based approach ignores the continuous nature of spatial processes and cannot solve the change-of-support problem, i.e.~when estimates are required to be produced at different administrative levels or levels of aggregation. We present a novel, practical, and easy to implement solution to solve these problems relying on a methodology combining deep generative modelling and fully Bayesian inference: we build on the recently proposed PriorVAE method able to encode spatial priors over small areas with variational autoencoders by encoding aggregates over administrative units. We map malaria prevalence in Kenya, a country in which administrative boundaries changed in 2010.

Towards a Cloud-Based Ontology for Service Model Security -- Technical Report

Mohammed Kharma, Ahmed Sabbah, Mustafa Jarrar

The adoption of cloud computing has brought significant advancements in the operational models of businesses. However, this shift also brings new security challenges by expanding the attack surface. The offered services in cloud computing have various service models. Each cloud service model has a defined responsibility divided based on the stack layers between the service user and their cloud provider. Regardless of its service model, each service is constructed from sub-components and services running on the underlying layers. In this paper, we aim to enable more transparency and visibility by designing an ontology that links the provider's services with the sub-components used to deliver the service. Such breakdown for each cloud service sub-components enables the end user to track the vulnerabilities on the service level or one of its sub-components. Such information can result in a better understanding and management of reported vulnerabilities on the sub-components level and their impact on the offered services by the cloud provider. Our ontology and source code are published as an open-source and accessible via GitHub: \href{https://github.com/mohkharma/cc-ontology}{mohkharma/cc-ontology}

A worldwide overview on the information security posture of online public services

João Marco Silva, Diogo Ribeiro, Luis Felipe Ramos et al.

The availability of public services through online platforms has improved the coverage and efficiency of essential services provided to citizens worldwide. These services also promote transparency and foster citizen participation in government processes. However, the increased online presence also exposes sensitive data exchanged between citizens and service providers to a wider range of security threats. Therefore, ensuring the security and trustworthiness of online services is crucial to Electronic Government (EGOV) initiatives' success. Hence, this work assesses the security posture of online platforms hosted in 3068 governmental domain names, across all UN Member States, in three dimensions: support for secure communication protocols; the trustworthiness of their digital certificate chains; and services' exposure to known vulnerabilities. The results indicate that despite its rapid development, the public sector still falls short in adopting international standards and best security practices in services and infrastructure management. This reality poses significant risks to citizens and services across all regions and income levels.

GAP2WSS: A Genetic Algorithm based on the Pareto Principle for Web Service Selection

SayedHassan Khatoonabadi, Shahriar Lotfi, Ayaz Isazadeh

Despite all the progress in Web service selection, the need for an approach with a better optimality and performance still remains. This paper presents a genetic algorithm by adopting the Pareto principle that is called GAP2WSS for selecting a Web service for each task of a composite Web service from a pool of candidate Web services. In contrast to the existing approaches, all global QoS constraints, interservice constraints, and transactional constraints are considered simultaneously. At first, all candidate Web services are scored and ranked per each task using the proposed mechanism. Then, the top 20 percent of the candidate Web services of each task are considered as the candidate Web services of the corresponding task to reduce the problem search space. Finally, the Web service selection problem is solved by focusing only on these 20 percent candidate Web services of each task using a genetic algorithm. Empirical studies demonstrate this approach leads to a higher efficiency and efficacy as compared with the case that all the candidate Web services are considered in solving the problem.

Bandwidth Allocation for Multiple Federated Learning Services in Wireless Edge Networks

Jie Xu, Heqiang Wang, Lixing Chen

This paper studies a federated learning (FL) system, where \textit{multiple} FL services co-exist in a wireless network and share common wireless resources. It fills the void of wireless resource allocation for multiple simultaneous FL services in the existing literature. Our method designs a two-level resource allocation framework comprising \emph{intra-service} resource allocation and \emph{inter-service} resource allocation. The intra-service resource allocation problem aims to minimize the length of FL rounds by optimizing the bandwidth allocation among the clients of each FL service. Based on this, an inter-service resource allocation problem is further considered, which distributes bandwidth resources among multiple simultaneous FL services. We consider both cooperative and selfish providers of the FL services. For cooperative FL service providers, we design a distributed bandwidth allocation algorithm to optimize the overall performance of multiple FL services, meanwhile cater to the fairness among FL services and the privacy of clients. For selfish FL service providers, a new auction scheme is designed with the FL service owners as the bidders and the network provider as the auctioneer. The designed auction scheme strikes a balance between the overall FL performance and fairness. Our simulation results show that the proposed algorithms outperform other benchmarks under various network conditions.

Managerial competences and their management: a study in Brazilian inns of a historic city (Tiradentes, Minas Gerais)

Leandro Eduardo Vieira Barros, Kely César Martins de Paiva, Mônica Carvalho Alves Cappelle

Tourism has become prominent on the national scene, both for national authorities and society. In this environment, the hotels’ branch manager plays a key role in which managerial competences are required to manage the project and the provision of services. For this reason, the objective of this research was to identify and analyze the management competences of hotel managers in Tiradentes (Minas Gerais, Brazil). For that, a field research with descriptive, qualitative and quantitative approach was carried out. It was observed that inns are family-owned businesses with little training in the area and the main role of managers is to be a mentor, focusing on human relationships. The inns contribute to the management of competences process, which occurs mainly due to an individual’s daily action in the organization, also as with formal training incentives. Finally, we present the research limitations and suggestions for future research.

Security, Availability, and Multiple Information Sources: Exploring Update Behavior of System Administrators

Christian Tiefenau, Maximilian Häring, Katharina Krombholz et al.

Experts agree that keeping systems up to date is a powerful security measure. Previous work found that users sometimes explicitly refrain from performing timely updates, e.g., due to bad experiences which has a negative impact on end-user security. Another important user group has been investigated less extensively: system administrators, who are responsible for keeping complex and heterogeneous system landscapes available and secure. In this paper, we sought to understand administrators' behavior, experiences, and attitudes regarding updates in a corporate environment. Based on the results of an interview study, we developed an online survey and quantified common practices and obstacles (e.g., downtime or lack of information about updates). The findings indicate that even experienced administrators struggle with update processes as the consequences of an update are sometimes hard to assess. Therefore, we argue that more usable monitoring and update processes are essential to guarantee IT security at scale.
