Il concetto di verità e di come questa venga tematizzata rappresenta uno degli ambiti di studio più dibattuti sia in letteratura che nel giornalismo. In entrambi questi ambiti, il concetto di verità assume forme e significati differenti. La letteratura si muove su un piano complesso e spesso simbolico, dove la verità può essere soggettiva, metaforica o emotiva, rispecchiando realtà interiori più che fatti concreti. Nel giornalismo, la verità è tradizionalmente legata alla fedeltà dei fatti, all’obiettività e alla verifica delle fonti: l’obiettivo è quello di informare il pubblico con accuratezza e trasparenza. In questo contributo intendo indagare gli articoli scritti da Ingeborg Bachmann sul caso Montesi in relazione alle convenzioni stilistico-strutturali e di narrazione della verità tipiche di un testo giornalistico come il reportage.

First discovered by L. R. Taylor (1961, Nature), Taylor's Power Law (TPL) correlates the mean (M) population abundances and the corresponding variances (V) across a set of insect populations using a power function (V=aM^b). TPL has demonstrated its 'universality' across numerous fields of sciences, social sciences, and humanities. This universality has inspired two main prongs of exploration: one from mathematicians and statisticians, who might instinctively respond with a convergence theorem similar to the central limit theorem of the Gaussian distribution, and another from biologists, ecologists, physicists, etc., who are more interested in potential underlying ecological or organizational mechanisms. Over the past six decades, TPL studies have produced a punctuated landscape with three relatively distinct periods (1960s-1980s; 1990s-2000s, and 2010s-2020s) across the two prongs of abstract and physical worlds. Eight themes have been identified and reviewed on this landscape, including population spatial aggregation and ecological mechanisms, TPL and skewed statistical distributions, mathematical/statistical mechanisms of TPL, sample vs. population TPL, population stability, synchrony, and early warning signals for tipping points, TPL on complex networks, TPL in macrobiomes, and in microbiomes. Three future research directions including fostering reciprocal interactions between the two prongs, heterogeneity measuring, and exploration in the context of evolution. The significance of TPL research includes practically, population fluctuations captured by TPL are relevant for agriculture, forestry, fishery, wildlife-conservation, epidemiology, tumor heterogeneity, earthquakes, social inequality, stock illiquidity, financial stability, tipping point events, etc.; theoretically, TPL is one form of power laws, which are related to phase transitions, universality, scale-invariance, etc.

Large Language Model (LLM) integrations into applications like Microsoft365 suite and Google Workspace for creating/processing documents, emails, presentations, etc. has led to considerable enhancements in productivity and time savings. But as these integrations become more more complex, it is paramount to ensure that the quality of output from the LLM-integrated applications are relevant and appropriate for use. Identifying the need to develop robust evaluation approaches for natural language generation, wherein references/ground labels doesn't exist or isn't amply available, this paper introduces a novel framework called "SAGEval" which utilizes a critiquing Agent to provide feedback on scores generated by LLM evaluators. We show that the critiquing Agent is able to rectify scores from LLM evaluators, in absence of references/ground-truth labels, thereby reducing the need for labeled data even for complex NLG evaluation scenarios, like the generation of JSON-structured forms/surveys with responses in different styles like multiple choice, likert ratings, single choice questions, etc.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) refer to alloys composed of five or more elements in equal or near-equal amounts or in an atomic concentration range of 5 to 35 atomic percent (at%). Different elemental ratios will affect the microstructures of HEAs and provide them with unique properties. Based on past research, HEAs have exhibited superior performance, relative to most conventional alloys, with respect to many properties, such as strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, magnetic behavior, etc. Among them, fatigue behavior has been a topic of focus, due to its importance in industrial applications. In this article, we summarized the research progress in the HEA-fatigue behavior in the past ten years, including experimental results and theoretical studies in subdivisions, such as high-cycle fatigue, low-cycle fatigue, fatigue-crack growth, fatigue mechanisms, etc. The influence of the processing and test methods on HEAs is described. The accuracy of several commonly used prediction models is also outlined. Finally, unresolved issues and suggestions on the direction of future research efforts are presented.

Questo articolo si propone di analizzare La noia (1960) di Alberto Moravia, Un amore (1963) di Dino Buzzati e La bambolona (1967) di Alba de Céspedes, come tre opere che, ponendo al centro della narrazione l’ossessione erotica di un personaggio borghese, riescono a rendere conto della crisi della mascolinità (Gunsberg) che si sviluppa durante gli anni Sessanta e che trova nella figura dell’inetto (sessuale) la sua più vivida espressione. In primo luogo ci concentreremo sulle le modalità di rappresentazione del desiderio dei tre protagonisti, per poi focalizzarci sulla centralità del tema del possesso e sulle sue forme – borghesi – di espressione (denaro e matrimonio). Infine, studieremo l’evoluzione dei tre personaggi femminili (Cecilia, Laide e Ivana), da cui i protagonisti sono attratti, che da oggetti di desiderio si smarcano dal male gaze e si affermano come soggetti di desiderio.

Tra tutti gli scritti odeporici del XVIII secolo, spicca senza dubbio un’opera che ha generato numerosi dibattiti riguardanti la struttura, la narrazione e addirittura la questione della paternità: il Lazarillo de ciegos caminantes. In questo lavoro sarà messo in risalto uno degli aspetti più intriganti del testo, ossia la presunta polifonia letteraria che, in realtà, rivela una narrazione unilaterale dettata da una sola, autentica voce. A ciò si aggiungerebbe una possibile reminiscenza della picaresca tradizionale. L’analisi di questa commistione di elementi, tra la prospettiva rigido-monolitica e l’ipotetica influenza picaresca, sarà l’argomento centrale di questo studio.

This article examines The Political and Confidential Correspondence of Lewis the Sixteenth (1803), by Helen Maria Williams, in which she translates the letters by Louis XVI while she adds her own political commentaries. This translation received negative reviews and one of its harshest critics was royalist emigré Bertrand de Moleville. The first part of this article explores the controversy that surrounded Correspondence and reveals that the letters were forged. The following part analyzes Williams’s political arguments that legitimize the deposition of Louis XVI as the king of France. The last part explores Bertrand’s Refutation, published in 1804. The article concludes that, regardless of the authenticity of the letters, Correspondence is a work that deserves reconsideration as it sheds light into Williams’s participation in the political debates of her time. Besides, the article shows that the misogynistic arguments employed by Bertrand contributed to the invisibilization of Williams’s work.

This paper exposes the language of geometric contexts and elementary schemes, which is a functorial formalism to study categories of geometric objects such as schemes, topological manifolds, differential manifolds, analytic manifolds, etc. Through the theory of Grothendieck topologies and geometric contexts, geometry turns out to be the study of local properties which are stable under base change.

The structure of quantum theory assures the discrimination of any possible orthogonal set of states. However, the scenario becomes highly nontrivial in the limited measurement setting and leads to different classes of impossibility, viz., indistinguishability, unmarkability, irreducibility etc. These phenomena, often referred to as other nonlocal aspects of quantum theory, have utmost importance in the domain of secret sharing etc. It, therefore, becomes a pertinent question to distill/activate such behaviours from a set, apparently devoid of these nonlocal features and free from local redundancy. While the activation of local indisitinguishability in the sets of entangled states has recently been reported, other stronger notion of quantum nonlocality has yet not been inspected in the parlance of activation. Here, we explored all such stronger versions of nonlocality and affirmatively answered to activate each of them. We also find a locally distinguishable set of multipartite entangled states which can be converted with certainty to a nontrivial set of locally irreducible genuinely entangled states.

The Speckle Imager via MUlti Layer Atmospheric Turbulence Object Reconstructor (SIMULATOR) is a lab-based testbed instrument developed to test for speckle correlation-based techniques in the optical regime. However, this instrument can be used as a testbed against post-processing techniques or algorithms like lucky imaging, phase diversity method etc. The SIMULATOR can emulate 3D atmospheric turbulence behaviour using a three-layer turbulence screen, giving the user command over important site characteristics like wind profile, global fried parameter, global isoplanatic patch, mid-layer and high-layer height effects etc. This testbed is unique in that it can mimic a broad range of site and telescope characteristics accurately without the need for manual intervention or tuning of parameters. The current version can handle a Field of View (FoV) of up to $0.3^{\circ}$, bandwidth ranges from 4860 to 6560 nm and can cover atmospheric turbulence heights up to 83 km.

Il contributo ricostruisce la costellazione della narrativa italiana contemporanea più ‘strana’, soprannominata ‘new Italian weird’ nel dibattito on line che ha accompagnato il fenomeno editoriale tra il 2016 e il 2018, e la raffronta con i suoi corrispettivi negli Stati Uniti e in Europa per ragionare su come e perché i sistemi letterari si trasformano nel tempo. Una lettura semiologica e polisistemica ha permesso di ricondurre le modalità di questo recente sentire letterario a una più ampia condizione della contemporaneità, il cui carattere esasperato è stato definito anche in termini di ipermodernità e che oggi sembrerebbe implicare una sempre maggiore ibridazione tra i generi del romanzo. A caratterizzare questa nuova forma di letteratura, a suo modo estrema, è il ricorso al ‘weird’, qui inteso non come genere a sé ma come dispositivo ‘obliquo’, impiegato per aprire nuove prospettive e per oltrepassare gli stretti confini e le limitate possibilità di senso del reale.

Modern Cyber-physical Systems (CPS) include applications like smart traffic, smart agriculture, smart power grid, etc. Commonly, these systems are distributed and composed of end-user applications and microservices that typically run in the cloud. The connection with the physical world, which is inherent to CPS, brings the need to operate and respond in real-time. As the cloud becomes part of the computation loop, the real-time requirements have to be also reflected by the cloud. In this paper, we present an approach that provides soft real-time guarantees on the response time of services running in cloud and edge-cloud (i.e., cloud geographically close to the end-user), where these services are developed in high-level programming languages. In particular, we elaborate a method that allows us to predict the upper bound of the response time of a service when sharing the same computer with other services. Importantly, as our approach focuses on minimizing the impact on the developer of such services, it does not require any special programming model nor limits usage of common libraries, etc.

Sono introdotti gli atti del Seminario MOD svoltosi all’Università IULM il 17-18 ottobre 2019. I «quarant’anni dopo» del titolo segnalano l’esigenza di mettere a fuoco le ricezioni ‘generazionali’ di Se una notte d’inverno un viaggiatore. In particolare, emerge la difficoltà di cogliere la specificità ‘lettoriale’ del romanzo, di cui oggi si mettono a fuoco soprattutto le problematiche legate alla figura dell’autore, persino della sua esperienza privata. La voce narrante particolarissima escogitata da Calvino pone infine problemi narratologici che forse richiedono ulteriori approfondimenti.

In “A Stone Woman” (2003), A.S. Byatt centres the story of her protagonist’s fantastic metamorphosis around the continuities between the transformations involving the body and those affecting the mind. In this light, her narrative constitutes a fictional exploration of cognition as embodied and of language as a cognitive tool equally rooted in embodiment. While this focus straightforwardly calls for second-generation cognitive narratology as the most suitable theoretical framework, the article proposes to integrate the cognitive approach with insights from unnatural narratology. This combined perspective arguably allows to appreciate and examine Byatt’s ambivalent use of embodied cognition as both a shared condition that fosters the readers’ capability to relate to the narrated experience, but also as a strategy that interacts with traditional features of the fairy tale (e.g. the lack of psychological introspection) in ways that are defamiliarizing and yet not subversive of the genre.

La questione del déracinement sembra costituire un nodo semantico rilevante in quelli che sono forse i tre principali interpreti della letteratura francese cosiddetta ipermoderna, vale a dire Emmanuel Carrère, Michel Houellebecq e Jonathan Littell. Si tratta di una problematica che, se da una parte mostra i suoi debiti verso la grande stagione del romanzo otto-novecentesco, dall’altra presenta un’articolazione originale, in cui il recupero della tradizione realista e modernista coesiste con tendenze peculiari della narrativa contemporanea. Una volta analizzate le configurazioni che questo tema assume nei diversi autori, sarà interessante valutare non soltanto le sue ricadute sulla costruzione del personaggio, ma anche i suoi legami con l’organizzazione formale del racconto

In questo contributo saranno passati in rassegna alcuni enigmi della tradizione letteraria greca che coinvolgono, in varia misura, la sfera della sessualità. Sarà tracciata una distinzione tra indovinelli che chiedono di essere effettivamente risolti e indovinelli che svelano la soluzione contestualmente alla loro enunciazione. In tale contesto, saranno posti in rilievo i punti di contatto tra le esigenze della scena comica e alcuni epigrammi erotici e scoptici che mutuano la forma grifotica senza proporre davvero la soluzione di un enigma, a ulteriore testimonianza della tendenza del genere epigrammatico a incorporare elementi desunti dalla commedia. Il riconoscimento di alcune analogie formali tra gli esempi analizzati indurrà ad accostare alla tradizione del γρῖφοςun testo poco noto, adesp. AP11.272, che della formulazione enigmatica si serve per stigmatizzare i cinedi, in linea con la tendenza, ben documentata in letteratura greco-latina, a definire l’omosessualità attraverso la negazione e la contraddizione logica. Saranno infine espresse alcune considerazioni di ordine generale sul rapporto tra enigma ed epigramma e sui criteri scelti dagli antologizzatori per operare una distinzione tra i due generi. The aim of this paper is to analyse some ancient Greek riddles variously involving the sexual sphere. A distinction between riddles that actually require to be solved and others that reveal their solution while being posed will be drawn. In such a context, attention will be paid to the points of contacts between comedy and some erotic and scoptic epigrams in the form of a riddle, in order to contribute to a better appreciation of the tendency of the epigrammatic genre to incorporate comic elements. The identification of formal analogies among the examples taken into account will also allow to analyse under the light of the riddling tradition an anonymous scoptic epigram, AP11.272, whose targets are passive homosexuals. The paper will be concluded by some observations on the relationship between riddle and epigram, and on the criteria adopted by anthologists in order to distinguish them.

L’articolo intende proporre una lettura de Gli anelli di Saturno di W. G. Sebald come testo focalizzato attorno a un viaggio di tipo iniziatico. Nel testo sembrano infatti essere presenti una serie di graduali trasformazioni che portano il narratore-viaggiatore degli Anelli verso un progressivo avvicinamento a una forma di conoscenza più profonda del reale. Il percorso iniziatico prevede che il soggetto si affranchi dal peso del Tempo ed entri in una dimensione post-esistenziale e attinga una visione distaccata del mondo, sempre più orientata alla riconquista di un sapere basato sulla legge suprema dell’Analogia, tema chiave del libro. L’Analogia rappresenta la forma regolatrice del cosmo e il principio in grado di opporsi alla Distruzione attraverso una ricomposizione della vita che ne unisca per corrispondenza le componenti umane, naturali e animali.

Gli affect studies, un campo di studi che ha origine negli anni Novanta in ambito anglofono grazie soprattutto al lavoro pionieristico di Brian Massumi e Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, hanno permesso di riconcepire le categorie ermeneutiche affermando la centralità non tanto dei soggetti, quanto piuttosto della loro interazione. La in-between-ness degli studi ha permesso altresì di mettere in discussione i dualismi che hanno permeato il pensiero occidentale, proponendo invece un’indagine di tipo non descrittivo che superi i tradizionali confini tra le discipline in cui viene incasellato il sapere. La pubblicazione di The Affect Theory Reader (2009) costituisce il momento cardine nella sistematizzazione degli Affect studies con il delinearsi di alcune genealogie, proposte nel volume da Melissa Gregg e Gregory Seigworth, che riflettono le varie direzioni prese da questi studi nella rilettura di Gilles Deleuze e Silvan Tomkins. Successivamente la critica femminista e neo-materialista ha individuato nell’affetto una componente incorporata che sovverte tanto i principi deterministici quanto quelli di libero arbitrio.
