Jernverkets havn

What Imported Viking Age and Medieval Artifacts Can Tell Us about Trade and Exchange in Mývatn, Iceland

Alan Laycock

ABSTRACT: The Mývatn region in northern Iceland has been receiving archaeological attention since at least the nineteenth century, with more intensive work having been carried out by Fornleifastofnun Íslands (FSÍ) in the late twentieth century, continuing to the present. The archaeological evidence suggests that Mývatn has been a region onto itself since the Settlement Period of Iceland through to the end of the Viking age. Imported goods such as whetstones and steatite demonstrate tell-tale characteristics of objects traded for in low quantities and over infrequent time periods. This article examines how Mývatn Icelanders were able to partially connect to the continental trade in beads, the Baltic trade in flint, and to other European trade networks operating between the 9th and 15th centuries, and to what extent these networks were able to influence the early Mývatn economy.

Liv Ullmann’s Handling of Religious Themes in Her Adaptation of Sigrid Undset’s The Wreath

Peter G. Christensen

ABSTRACT: In 1995 Liv Ullmann released Kristin Lavransdatter, a film adaptation of The Wreath, the first novel in Sigrid Undset’s trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter, a novelistic reconstruction of fourteenth-century psychology and religious culture published between 1920 and 1922. This work was crucial to Undset’s winning the Nobel Prize in 1928 “principally for her powerful descriptions of Northern life during the Middle Ages”; though its historical accuracy has been challenged, the affection with which this work is held by Norwegian readers endures. So Ullmann was taking on well-known text, which had been authored by a keen Catholic apologist, when she undertook her adaptation. Her version of the story—or rather versions, since three different cuts have been released—reduces the religious dimension of the original while increasing the focus on the psychological exploration of family tensions, whether between generations, between marriage partners, between siblings—or between friends. A comparison of the two works, preceded by a brief discussion of Undset’s religious writings, illuminates each.

Das Ziel bestimmt die Mittel. Das Wirken Östen Undéns auf dem Weg zur schwedischen Neutralitätspolitik.

Peer Krumrey

The Swedish policy of non-alliance aiming at neutrality in the event of war with all its contradictions and disputes continues to have an effect on societal debate in today’s Sweden. This article advocates a more accurate differentiation between historical processes and political assessments. It argues that this can be achieved by focussing on objectives set at that time as well as political outcomes resulting from the means chosen to achieve them rather than trying to compile moral benchmarks retrospectively. In order to exemplify this the article draws on the long-time Swedish foreign minister Östen Undén whose work is considered formative for Swedens foreign and security policy during the Cold War. It is stated that by using this approach it is possible to solve some of the prevailing contradictions and to demonstrate a higher degree of continuity.
