Epistemology of Knowledge: Bridging Western and Islamic Thought

Refinal, Mahyudin Ritonga, Rusydi et al.

Objective: This study aims to examine the epistemology of knowledge by bridging Western and Islamic thought, and analyze the potential integration of these perspectives in the development of knowledge. The main objective of this research is to understand how epistemology is viewed within the contexts of Western and Islamic thought and explore the possibility of a more holistic integration between them. Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework of this research is based on classical Western epistemology, which emphasizes reason and empiricism, compared to Islamic epistemology which emphasizes revelation, intellect, and experience in understanding truth. These two theories are analyzed to identify fundamental similarities and differences in the formation of knowledge. Literature Review: The literature review covers studies on epistemology in Western philosophy, including thinkers such as Descartes, Kant, and Dewey, as well as epistemological perspectives in Islamic tradition through the thoughts of Al-Ghazali, Ibn Sina, and Al-Farabi. The review also examines recent studies on the dialogue between Western and Islamic knowledge systems, focusing on efforts to integrate these two systems of knowledge. Methods: The research method used is a qualitative approach with a comparative analysis. Data is collected through literature studies that discuss Western and Islamic epistemological perspectives, as well as previous research relevant to the theme of this study. Results: The results of the study show that there are fundamental similarities in the pursuit of knowledge between the two perspectives, although there are differences in reasoning approaches and ontological foundations. Implications: The implications of this research highlight the need for an interdisciplinary approach in education and the development of knowledge that accommodates both perspectives. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in the development of the concept of integrating Western and Islamic epistemology, which has not been widely explored in previous studies.

Knowledge transfer, not just true beliefs: virtue epistemology as a philosophical basis for education

Mikhail G. Hort

Introduction. Modern pedagogical practice is being reformed due to systemic changes in the ways of social interaction. Knowledge transfer is being significantly modified under the influence of technical innovations, although it remains traditionally one of the main tasks of the educational process. The development of artificial intelligence, neural networks and other analytical computer systems shows that propositional knowledge is not the privilege of the human mind. This state of affairs changes the idea of knowledge as such. In this regard, the participants of the educational process face the task of revising the philosophical basis of modern learning in terms of finding a new definition of knowledge. It is also necessary to develop new methodological recommendations that would correspond to modern epistemological theories of knowledge, belief and understanding. Materials and research methods. The article uses the methods of conceptual analysis and comparative study characteristic of philosophy. The research materials are sources on theory of knowledge, education and also on applied epistemology. Results. Virtue epistemology is one of the most actively developing theories of knowledge in contemporary philosophy and humanities. It is based on the idea that knowledge cannot be an accidental belief, but must be the merit of a cognitive agent. This approach solves many problems of the philosophical theory of knowledge and creates a subjectoriented view of the nature of the cognitive process. This attitude allows us to use virtue epistemology in debates about applied issues, including those related to the explanation of the tasks and content of education. Discussion. A feature of the analysis within virtue epistemology is attention to cognitive skills (reliabilism) and sustained intellectual dispositions (responsibilism) in their relationship to the process of formation of true beliefs. Virtue epistemology defines knowledge through the notion of merit in the manifestation of subjective qualities, so the student's motivation and the context of belief formation should be taken into account when developing specific methodological recommendations. Such an approach explains why standardized testing cannot serve as the sole and primary means of assessing learners. At the same time, the general semantic peculiarity of the notions of virtue allows us to appeal to examples of individuals as ideal types of certain qualities (this is called exemplarism). At the same time, it is necessary to explain why these traits are the excellences that make their bearer better in epistemic terms. Conclusion. In explaining the knowledge transfer, pedagogy can be based on the philosophical principles of virtue epistemology. Such integration enriches both disciplines: pedagogy gets a conceptual scheme adequate to the modern social and technological situation, and epistemology gets a practical application.

Nature of Knowledge in Philosophy

Ikeoluwapo B. Baruwa, A. Shutaleva

This article is devoted to the philosophical study of the conditions under which knowledge can become a component or tool of education. The presentation of the contribution of epistemology to human development and education is based on addressing issues such as the nature of knowledge, sources of knowledge, theories, and criteria of truth. We proceed from the idea that knowledge is a condition of education. Particular attention is paid to the issue of distinguishing between such types of knowledge as 'knowing how’ and ‘knowing that'. Educational practices open a common foundation that unites the life world of people, types of sociality, and hermeneutical practices. The epistemological approach to the question of the essence of knowledge assumes that knowledge meets three requirements, namely, knowledge must be objective, subjective, and evidentiary. Epistemology includes subjectivity as the basis of human existence in the natural world and the world with others. Intersubjectivity is considered a criterion for the reliability of knowledge about the world, which allows asserting the relationship of the objective with the subjective.

Selection of Monitoring points for the Number and Infectivity of the Main Vectors of West Nile Virus in the Volgograd Region

N. V. Boroday, A. V. Nesgovorova, V. F. Fomina et al.

Relevance. Since 1999, the incidence of West Nile fever has been recorded in the Volgograd region. The main vectors of West Nile virus in Russia are Cx mosquitoes. pipiens L. and Cx. modestus Fic. An objective assessment of the entomological situation and infection rate of these species within the framework of epidemiological surveillance of West Nile fever is possible only in biotopes with sufficiently high numbers of mosquitoes; therefore, the choice of sampling points is an urgent task. Purpose of the study. Analysis of the West Nile virus main vectors - mosquitoes Cx. pipiens L. and Cx. modestus Fic. average number, occurrence and infection rate at the various open biotopes of the Volgograd region to justify the choice of optimal points for entomological monitoring. Materials and methods. The catching and accounting of the mosquitoes’ number was carried out in 2015–2019 from May to August in the third decade of each month in a floodplain forest, at a personal plot, a summer cottage and on bank of water body. To catch mosquitoes, automatic traps Mosquito Magnet Executive and LovKom-1 were used. The accounting unit was the number of mosquitoes collected in both traps per trap-night. The average number, the index of occurrence and infection rate were determined by generally accepted methods. Detection of West Nile virus RNA in samples of mosquito pool suspensions was performed by RT-PCR using the AmpliSense WNV-FL reagent kit. The results were statistically processed using Microsoft Excel 2016 (Microsoft Corporation, USA). Results. In the 2015-2019 period, 17468 mosquitoes of the genus Culex: 8258 species – Cx. pipiens L., 9210 species – Cx. modestus Fic. were collected in over than 80 trap nights at the selected stationary points of the Volgograd region. Average number of Cx. pipiens L. was: in the floodplain forest – 4.6 individuals per 1 trap-night; at the personal plot – 183.9; at the summer cottage – 30.2; on the bank of water body – 194.3. Average number of Cx. modestus Fic. was: in the floodplain forest – 5.2 individuals per 1 trapnight; at the personal plot – 8.3; at the summer cottage – 2.5;on the bank of water body – 444.6. Occurrence index Cx. pipiens L. was highon the bank of water body and at the personal plot (47.1% and 44.5%, respectively), much lower – at the summer cottage (7.3%) and in the floodplain forest (1.1%). Level of WNV infection among Cx. pipiens L.on a personal plot was 5.4%, on a summer cottage – 3.6%,on the bank of water body – 2.2%. No infected samples were found among Cx. pipiens L. collected from the floodplain forest. WNV RNA in samples from mosquitoes Cx. modestus Fic. found only in individuals caughton the bank of water body. Their infection rate was 1.2%. Discussion. Ecological plasticity of Cx. pipiens L. mosquitoes allows them to live in settlements and near water bodies. Mosquitoes of the species Cx. modestus Fic. do not fly away from ponds, breeding places. Conclusion. High numbers and occurrence of the Cx. pipiens L. mosquitoes were observed at a personal plot within the city andon the bank of water body, Cx. modestus Fic. –on the bank of water body. WNV RNA positive samples were detected from mosquitoes collected at the personal plot, the summer cottage andon the bank of water body. To monitor the number and infection rate among Cx. pipiens L., points of registration and sampling should be placed in open stationson personal plots in settlements, banks of water bodies and summer cottages. We recommend to carry entomological monitoring for Cx. modestus Fic. out onlyon the banks of water bodies along the water's edge in reed thickets. The placement of the main WNV vectors number and infection rate monitoring points in the floodplain forest is not advisable.

Explicationist Epistemology and the Explanatory Role of Knowledge

E. Olsson

It has been argued that much of contemporary epistemology can be unified under Carnap’s methodology of explication, which originated in the neighboring field of philosophy of science. However, it is unclear to what extent epistemological theories that emphasize the explanatory role of knowledge fit into this picture, Kornblith’s natural kind epistemology and Williamson’s knowledge first approach being cases in point. In this connection, I raise three questions. Can we harvest the insights of these approaches without loss in the more standard and less idiosyncratic explicationist framework? Can we do so without falling prey to prominent criticism raised against those approaches? Finally, do the approaches come out as coherent under an explicationist rendering? I argue that in Kornblith’s case the answer to all three questions is essentially in the affirmative. Much of the knowledge first approach is also translatable into explicationism. However, from that perspective, Williamson’s central argument for treating knowledge as undefinable, referring to persistent yet unsuccessful attempts to solve the Gettier problem, amounts to an overreaction to that problem. Leaving explicationism aside, I ask, in the penultimate section, what Williamson’s own philosophical method really amounts to.

Walter Benjamin e il narratore

Silvia Cammertoni

Use of Molecular Genetic Methods for Investigation of Outbreaks of Enterovirus Infection in the Subjects of the Far Eastern Federal District

L. V. Butakova, O. E. Trotsenko, E. Yu. Sapega et al.

The results of molecular genetic studies of clinical samples taken from three foci of outbreaks of enterovirus infection, registered on the territory of Khabarovsk Krai and Amur Oblast from 2012 through 2013 were reported. Several strains of enteroviruses were obtained: strains of Coxsackie A-4 and Coxsackie A-16 from De-Kastri rural locality, strains of ECHO-6 from Ust’-Urikma (Amur Oblast) and strains of Coxsackie A-6 from Raichihisnsk (Amur Oblast). Use of molecular genetic methods for investigation of collective morbidity and outbreaks of enterovirus infection help to confirm the identity of enteroviruses, isolated from patients and to identify the imported cases of infection.

Scienza, filosofia, senso comune: come l’incredibile può diventare ovvio

Pasquale Frascolla

Science, Philosophy, Common Sense: how the extraordinary could turn into the Obvious The paper is devoted to an examination of some aspects of the relation between science, philosophy and common sense. By referring to crucial episodes of the history of astronomy and physics such as the Copernican Revolution and the birth of Relativity Theory, attention is paid to the process by which new scientific ideas contrasting with deeply entrenched intuitions and socially shared beliefs are gradually absorbed into the conceptual schema underlying common sense. Some light is thrown on the role that philosophy can play in that process.

Central Asia, Euro-centrism and Colonialism

Nargis T. Nurulla-Khodzhaeva

The following article should not be dismissed as yet another attempt to construct a renewed round ofrevisionism in history. On the contrary, it aims to explore the possibility of scaling down the dominant Eurocentric epistemology that served as a basis for a stereotypical frame of knowledge about Central Asia. The majority of researchers of the region do not deem the need to review the scale of contradictory clashes created by the notion of Eurocentrism. The latter is reflected in numerous articles about the frozen (and sadly deadlock) dilemma on why and how were the lands of Tajiks, Uzbeks and Kazakhs divided. By publishing conventional analyses on the region's "clumsy separation", experts illustrate their subaltern, narrowly framed by the colonial world, knowledge and hence, remain as gravestones of the Eurocentric methodology. In the process of such explication, the most important role is allocated to the modern culture, which encouraged the formation of the paradox, represented to us via the paraphrased Soviet aphorism: modernity and coloniality are twin brothers. The initiation of the process of decolonizing the mind within the five republics of the region is possible. One of the solutions involves recognizing the integrity of the pluralist-cycled culture and philosophy of the region. The proposed act will allow shrinking the focus on the knowledge within the limited national units and frames (thus, lessening the degree of'fetishism of the national identity'), and rather creating conditions for designing the "bridge", linking different cultures, ideologies and institutional spaces in Central Asia, as a transnational intellectual matrix. The aforementioned theory will provide a basis and structure for empirical facts, and, therefore, drive the researchers from merely constituting to critically thinking, and consequently, inspire to come upon new approaches and fields of study, connecting them with the existing, colonial experiences. It is essential to highlight that based on this, a new dialogue may commence, where Central Asian scholars are regarded as equals to those of other research schools (both within and outside the region).

Immunogenic Activity of Secreted Protein-Based Compounds Staphylococcus aureus № 6

I. M. Gruber, E. A. Astashkina, O. V. Lebedinskaya et al.

Difficulties in the therapy of infection, caused by S. aureus, depends on the resistance of staphylococci to antibiotics, proceeding to chronicity of the diseases and the development on that background the depression of innate immunity functions and decreasing of the host resistance to the infection. In spite of tremendous efforts of researchers, up to date there are no commercial antistaphylococcal vaccine the efficacy of which would be proved in the completed clinical trials.Aim: obtaining secreted protein-based substances of the S. aureus № 6 and investigation their immunogenicity.Material and methods. Secreted protein-based substances (SPS) were obtain as: «initial» – from the filtrates of the culture fluid of the S. aureus № 6, grown to the end of the exponential phase according to the technology described previously [9], and I SPS and II SPS – after the ion-exchange chromatography of the «initial» SPS on the columns with Q-Sepharose and DEAE-Sepharose. The level of specific IgG antibodies in sera of immunized rabbits and mice determined in ELISA, the immunogenic activity evaluated in experiments of active and passive protection from the challenge performed on BALB/с mice and also by the determination of the bacterial content in organs and in the test of abscesses formation in kidneys. Results. Investigated SBS possessed the antigenic activity (the level of specific IgG antibodies in sera of immunized animals increased 2.2 – 7.5 times compared to the control groups), that is favor of the activation of the adaptive immunity system and significant protective activity revealed in experiments of active (index of efficacy 2.63 – 4.28) and passive protection. The immunization of mice with the «initial» and II SPS led to significant decrease of the number of colonyforming units of S. aureus and formation of abscesses in kidneys of mice. It is evidently, that investigated SPS, influence on the severity of staphylococcal infection and possesses the therapeutic effect.Conclusion. The preformed complex analysis at the current stage allowed to reveal perspectives of the further study of «initial» and II SPS in pre-clinical trials, as candidates, possessing the high protective facilities, for including them in the drug composition for immune prophylaxis and immunotherapy of diseases, caused by S. aureus.

Nelson Werneck Sodré e a História Militar Do Brasil

Alexandre Manuel Esteves Rodrigues

This article tries to develop the assumption that medicine and philosophy can strictly collaborate to assure a correct comprehension of the huge phenomenon of illness and disease. We can imagine a direct application of philosophical theories and models to ameliorate the theoretical instruments of medicine itself. Philosophy can furnish elaborated means to elucidate the problem of medical mistakes and fallacies. Moreover it can contribute to clarify the precise distinction between the various typologies of causality which can be found in medical practice and theorization. It can still focus the question of probability and credence in medicine and give precise theoretical suggestions for a more articulated arrangement of some defined medical concepts.
