A BOURDIEUSIAN PERSPECTIVE ON INCLUDING IMMIGRANTS WITH DISABILITIES: CHALLENGES FOR THE GREEK EDUCATION SYSTEM

Panagiotis GIAVRIMIS

The study examined the various inequalities encountered by students of migrant or refugee backgrounds with disabilities in the Greek education system, based on primary school teachers' perspectives. Thirty-one teachers took part in the study. The analysis of how participating educators use discourse within Bourdieu's framework emphasised the importance of school structures as key elements in maintaining social inequalities. The implemented educational policy is based on inadequate institutional frameworks, insufficient material and technical infrastructure, and insufficient teacher training. School education primarily emphasises the Greek language. As a result, the native languages of students from immigrant or refugee backgrounds are gradually being overshadowed. At the same time, inclusion largely depends on individual teachers' will. However, diversity is considered a source of growth for the entire school community. The findings highlight the need for profound institutional changes to transform schools into spaces of equality and inclusion.

Discipliner les corps, diffuser l’idéologie : engagement corporel et stratégie métapolitique transnationale des Active Clubs

Frédérick Nadeau, Tristan Boursier, Isaac Gnocchini

This article analyzes the phenomenon of Active Clubs (AC), a transnational far-right network that combines physical training, virilist fraternity, and accelerationist discourse. Inspired by the Rise Above Movement, these clubs present themselves as fitness spaces while functioning as vectors of radicalization through masculine sociability and self-transformation. The analysis is based on a corpus of over 1,000 publications from Canadian, French, and American Telegram channels, as well as media resources produced by the movement itself. Two key concepts structure the analysis: metapolitics, understood as a cultural strategy for spreading ideology outside traditional electoral channels; and bodily engagement, which refers to the embedding of ideological commitment in everyday gestures, physical routines, and community rituals. This article shows that Active Clubs embody a contemporary form of fascism disseminated under the guise of an attractive lifestyle, staged through performative digital content.

20-minute neighbourhoods, criticisms, conspiracy theories, and health: a critical discourse analysis

Melissa F. Legge, Elizabeth Inyang, Jonathan Stokes

Abstract Background 20-minute neighbourhoods (20MNs) and other proximity-based urban planning models are argued to improve communities, enhance population health, and reduce inequities. However, these links remain unevidenced. Conversely, there are science-driven criticisms that 20MNs could exacerbate health/social inequities requiring evaluation. These models have also resulted in conspiracy theories, believed to be linked to COVID-19 public health measures, which may hinder the implementation and evaluation of 20MNs and any expected health/inequity gains. Aim The aim of this research is to better understand how public and media perceptions, criticisms, and conspiracy theories about 20MNs have evolved since the pandemic, how these link to health/social inequities, and how these connect to misinformation and disinformation of public health interest. Methods A qualitative study design using thematic and critical discourse analysis (CDA). We systematically searched a selection of UK/US online newspapers from across the political spectrum for analysis. The timeframes of interest are the two 4-year periods before and after the pandemic was declared on March 11, 2020, to compare differences in discourse that may have resulted from the pandemic and its response. Results Coverage of 20MNs increased significantly in the post-pandemic period. Through the analysis, we identified several themes, including restriction of movement/loss of privacy, social engineering, political affiliation, COVID-19 as an accelerator, worsening health/social inequities, classism, and liveability/resiliency. Conclusions There is a significant political divide in 20MN discourse. 20MNs were linked to other conspiracy theories such as anti-vaccine beliefs and climate change denial. Framing of these interventions may be a contributing factor.

Multimodal and cognitive approaches to academic discourse in AI-supported learning

Ella Dovhaniuk, Alexander Piwowar, Natalya Oliynyk

This article examines how academic discourse is reshaped in higher education through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and multimodal design, understood here in the sense of multimodal discourse theory (not multimodal AI models). Grounded in cognitive linguistics, sociocognitive discourse theory and multimodal semiotics, the study analyzes how academic concepts are structured and communicated in AI-enhanced learning environments. It focuses on two Micromodules developed at the University of Osnabrück – Welcome to the AI Jungle and Expedition AI. Micromodules are short multimedia units suitable for Blended Learning that integrate text, visuals, interactivity, and AI-generated feedback within the Stud.IP Learning Management System (LMS). Using a combination of cognitive discourse analysis and multimodal content analysis, the study explores how learners engage with the concepts of learning, argumentation, and autonomy in AI-mediated contexts. Our findings show that learners navigate content using conceptual metaphors like LEARNING IS A JOURNEY, reinforced by modular layout and AI feedback mechanisms. Argumentation is shaped through additive elaboration rather than critical opposition, while autonomy is bounded by interface cues and AI prompts. The study also analyzes how AI systems – specifically tailored to and embedded within the LMS – can participate as semiotic agents, influencing meaning-making through tone, visual presence, and structured interaction. These patterns suggest a shift toward dialogic, hybrid academic discourse in which agency is distributed across human and non-human actors. The article argues that in AI-supported, multimodal learning environments, academic literacy should be reimagined as something created through collaboration between students, educators, and digital tools. It also highlights that developing critical digital literacy is essential for designing curricula that meet the demands of the future.

Social Media Manipulation in the Post-Truth Era: The Saudi Twitter Campaign to Boycott Turkish Products

Hala Mulki, İsmail Sarı

Social media platforms such as Twitter (X) and Facebook were extensively used by activists during the Arab Uprisings that began in Tunisia on December 17, 2010, and spread to Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen, Libya, and Syria, and were heralded during this period as “liberation technologies”. However, it is now broadly acknowledged that social media has become an effective tool for information control in the hands of authoritarian regimes. In this context, the study examines social media manipulation in the post-truth era by analyzing the Twitter boycott campaign launched by Saudi Arabia against Turkish products between October 3 and 16, 2020. While there is extensive literature on the social media operations of major powers such as the United States, Russia, and China, research on similar activities conducted by Middle Eastern countries remains limited. From this perspective, the study aims to contribute to the literature on social media operations in the Middle East. Furthermore, the boycott campaign provides an empirical example of how social media is strategically used for narrative control and perception management in international relations. The research was conducted using the Opinion Analysis Model that combines Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, and the findings were visualized through Gephi. The results demonstrate that the boycott of Turkish products in Saudi Arabia went beyond being a mere economic reaction and reveal that anti-Turkish political discourse was systematically disseminated to large audiences through nationalist emotional content and misleading information.

Staff perception on including students with physical disabilities at a South African university

Mashudu R. Mphohoni, Martha Geiger, Surona Visagie et al.

Background: International and local policy frameworks on disability promote inclusive higher education practices for students with disabilities (SWD). However, the actual application of these frameworks concerning students with physical disabilities (SWPD) in any School of Health Care Sciences (SHCS) is uncertain in South African universities. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the perceptions of academic and admission staff on the inclusion of SWPD in SHCS at a South African university. The study was carried out at a University of Health Sciences in South Africa. Method: A qualitative study in which respondents (n = 12) were interviewed in depth about their perceptions on the inclusion of SWPD in the SHCS. Thematic analysis was used in the data assessment. Results: The results revealed three main themes: policy discourse, environmental effects on inclusion and SWPD enrolment. Respondents reported the lack of a disability inclusion policy and disability unit to support SWD in general. The respondents also noted that there were environmental challenges that could potentially affect the inclusion of SWPD in SHCS study programmes. Respondents also indicated that there was no SWPD enrolment as the university’s current inclusion and/or quota system does not include SWD. Conclusion: The findings of the study showed a lack of disability inclusion policy, environmental challenges and lack of SWPD enrolment. Based on the study findings, it can be concluded that inclusion of SWPD at this university may be negatively influenced. Contribution: The study findings contribute to the field of disability and the inclusion of SWPD in higher education institutions (HEIs).

الفعل المضمر في قصيدة "أبا المنقوش" للشّاعر محمّد العيد آل خليفة - مقاربة تداولية

Mehdi MECHTA, Abdrahmane DAHMANI

Abstract  Pragmatics studies language in use as a communicative social phenomenon which is a science in its own right that contains investigations and issues, working to reveal what is more harmful than the discourse, not poetic discourse spared from that.    Therefore, in this article In this article, we aim to approach a pragmatic analysis of the poem "Abu Al-Munqush" by the Algerian poet Mohammed Al-Eid Al-Khalifa, attempting to trace the implied actions within it as much as the context allows. We have approached these actions through the implied meaning encompassed by each of the call, the question, and the command in the poem, respectively. Then, we approached another type of implication, "the requisite," and we grounded our procedural work on the concept of requisiteness and its relation to the speech act that involves intention. We clarified that the requisite is intended for tracking, and we concluded the article with a summary in which we briefly presented the results we reached.

The Semiotics of Pictorial Discourse in Ahmed Khalid Tawfiq’s The Legend of the Late Night

Mohammad Noori, Nihad Mahmood

This paper analyses visual discourse in Ahmed Khalid Tawfiq’s The Legend of the Late Night (2002) by investing in semiotics as a critical method, gripping the essence of the image, especially if it involves an imagination imbued with horror literature, as it will give rise to a kind of novelistic narrative through the enjoyment and amazement at the new form that jumps to the mind to formal camouflage with an artistic and functional impact.  The prominent approach to tackle this reading is characterized by its ability to analyze literary discourse, reveal its secrets, and interrogate its symbols to reach its goal or approach. Critical reading is considered a simulation analysis of the conceptual procedure through analyzing the physical form of the sign within the discourse or image, studying the semiotic units such as words, colours, shapes and images, and then linking the signs to their cultural, social and other contexts,  and an attempt to observe the effect of narrative employment of two types that come together to establish a genre that inspires in terms of novelty and excitement; they are: the semiotics of the image and horror literature. The research problem can be defined by the question that searches for the nature of the encounter between method and procedure. In other words, how suitable is the semiotic approach for analyzing Arab novelist discourse and revealing its secrets? The conclusions lie in completing the accumulated knowledge to enhance the energies of the different genres and in an attempt to cross-fertilize some genres capable of producing their fruits due to valid hybridization in a place where procedure and employment interact.
