French Modern: Norms and Forms of the Social Environment by Paul Rabinow (review)

D. Clarke

Paul Rabinow's study of space and society, power and knowledge in France from the 1830s through the 1930s uses tools from anthropology, philosophy, and cultural criticism to make fascinating connections between diverse protagonists and domains. In each of these domains - ranging from medicine to the layout of colonial cities - Rabin ow describes the creation of norms and the search for forms adequate for understanding and regulating what became known as modern society. He also focuses on an unexplored middle ground between the masters of high culture and the experiences of ordinary life, which he calls "middling modernism."Paul Rabinow is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley. His most recent books include Michel Foucault: Beyond Structuralism and Hermeneutics (with Hubert Dreyfus) and The Foucault Reader.

Development of a BIM-based AI-driven matching tool for LCA datasets

Dino Petrosa, Pamela Haverkamp, Jana Gerta Backes et al.

Abstract The construction sector significantly contributes to environmental issues and often relies on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for the quantification and optimization of its environmental impacts. One of the most time- and labour-intensive tasks in LCA is matching real elements (e.g., construction elements and materials) to suitable environmental datasets to get an idea of the element’s sustainability performance (emissions). In this regard, this study presents an open-access software tool that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to support the matching process between construction elements in Building Information Modelling (BIM) with corresponding environmental datasets in a semi-automatic manner. Developed in Python and using the GPT-4o mini model from OpenAI for its matching mechanism, the tool demonstrates how AI-driven digital innovation can improve efficiency, reduce manual effort, and enhance early-stage environmental assessment in construction planning, while integrating sustainability data into BIM workflows. Through a series of use cases, the software’s ability to address key challenges in the integration of BIM and LCA tools is demonstrated, showcasing a high degree of automation and interoperability. Moreover, the accessible design of the tool allows use without extensive technical knowledge. The conducted validation tests confirmed the tool’s potential for accurate LCA matching, highlighting opportunities for AI to enhance sustainability workflows while offering BIM experts a better understanding of the challenges in sustainability assessment.

Three successful pregnancies after kidney transplantation with long-term graft survival: case report

Dorota Pazik, Katarzyna Kosecka, Patryk Rudziński et al.

Pregnancies after kidney transplantation are considered high risk. Preconceive care is crucial for favorable mother-fetal outcome but also for good renal graft function. Herein, we report a case of kidney transplant recipient secondary to lupus nephritis with three consecutive successful pregnancies and excellent graft function after 16 post-transplant years. Preconception care included two protocolar biopsies performed prior to immunosuppressive treatment modifications. No signs of rejections were found in either biopsy, no additional treatment was necessary, and the patient was safely converted from mycophenolate mofetil to azathioprine. First pregnancy was naturally conceived, its course was uncomplicated and a healthy female newborn wasdelivered via vaginal birth. Within one year after delivery the patient presented proteinuria, borderline changes were found in the biopsy of allograft and were treated with immunosuppression augmentation and ACEI.  At 7th post implantation year, after surveillance biopsy showing no signs of rejection and appropriate pharmacotherapy adjustments, second pregnancy occurred from in vitro fertilization (IVF). It was complicated with deep vein thrombosis, intrauterine growth restriction and premature birth in 32nd week of gestation. Three months after delivery, the patient conceived spontaneously, third pregnancy course was uncomplicated. Close follow up, including protocol and indication biopsies, allowed to preserve excellent graft function in the context of multiple immunosuppressive treatment adjustments. Here we present a case where natural conception and in vitro fertilization intertwine without harming the transplanted organ.

Antropologia i literatura – „dziwny romans”. Zwroty i przemiany

Anna Łebkowska

The article focuses on transformations in the anthropology of literature that have occurred over the past decades and on the connections between anthropology and literature. These are examined in terms of turns – with particular emphasis on Polish gender studies – as well as transformations: from constructivist assumptions through new ontology and epistemology to the redefinition of the subject and the links between anthropology and post-anthropocentric tendencies. The article highlights how the shared problematization of the foundations of anthropology (panfictionality) and literature (metafiction) – important a few decades ago and often called the literaturization of anthropology or anthropologization of literature – is becoming obsolete in favor of parallel activities: indicating the agency, symbiosis, and non-obvious character of the subject and the beings that coexist with it, which is noticed by both cultural anthropology and literature.

Paraffinic oil residues after heating as a basis for fuel

Zvereva Elvira, Makarova Anastasiya, Ilyin Nikolay et al.

The possibility of reuse of heavy residues (oily sludge) of low-sulfur, highly paraffinic Mangyshlak oils as a basis for fuel with improved environmental characteristics for engines to marine, river and railway transport, gas turbine and boiler plants, steam boilers and industrial furnaces was shown. A variant of the joint application of the methods of nuclear magnetic resonance, laser confocal microscopy and rheology for study of micro- and mesoscopic structure and some physicochemical properties of crude oil products has been developed. It has been shown that preliminary heating to 90 ° C leads to disruption of the structure and hydrogen bonds between oil associates and complexes, increasing sample homogeneity due to precipitation of solid impurities, partial removal of water content, air bubbles and dissolved gases. The addition of medium distillate diesel fractions to preliminary heated oil residues will make it possible to obtain a higher quality version of the fuel with a reduced resinous and asphaltene substances, lower pour point, good energy content and low sulfur content. Thus, valuable energy-containing raw materials can be reused. It should also be noted that the reuse of accumulated oil waste will reduce the harmful effects of landfills, will preserve the natural landscape, and will cut the cost of extracting natural resources.
