Yi Lyu, Luke Dotson, Nic Draves
et al.
In this paper, we take a close look at how CTF can be used in cybersecurity education. We divide the CTF competitions into four different categories, which are attack-based CTFs, defense-based CTFs, jeopardy CTFs and gamified and wargames CTFs. We start our analysis by summarizing the main characteristics of different CTF types. We then compare them with each other in both learning objectives and other aspects like accessibility. We conclude that combining all four CTF formats can help participants build one's cybersecurity knowledge. By doing that, we hope that our findings will provide some useful insights for future CTF educators.

Rescatando al Departamento de Educación
Peter McLaren, Laura Proasi

Using Code Snippets to Teach Programming Languages
Joshua Akingbade, Jianhua Yang, Mir Seyedebrahimi
Coding is a fundamental skill required in the engineering discipline, and much work exists exploring better ways of teaching coding in the higher education context. In particular, Code Snippets (CSs) are approved to be an effective way of introducing programming language units to students. CSs are portions of source code of varying size and content. They can be used in a myriad of ways, one of which is to teach the code they contain as well as its function. To further explore the use of CSs, a pedagogical summer internship project was set up at the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG). The scope of the considerations for the study derives from an educational standpoint. Within the evaluations made, the focus was primarily given to pieces of information which proved to provide evidence pertaining to the methodology involved in either teaching or developing teaching materials. By taking the results produced into account from a pedagogical perspective, it was found that several qualities of popular code snippet tutorials which benefit or hinder the learning process, including code length, interactivity, further support, and quality of explanation. These qualities are then combined and used to present a plan for the design of an effective learning resource which makes use of code snippets.
Exploring the Integration of Artificial Intelligence into Special Education Teacher Preparation through the TPACK Framework
Samantha R. Goldman, Adam C. Carreon, Sean J. Smith
With the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically generative AI and large language models (e.g., ChatGPT, Google Gemini), into education, there is a conversation regarding what knowledge teachers still need and will need moving forward. In this article, we describe how AI can, and should, be aligned to the Technological Knowledge, Pedagogical Knowledge, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, as a part of special education teacher preparation. Additionally, we explore the implications of AI on the TPACK framework, specifically how AI can be integrated within each of the three components, specific tools that support each aspect, and guiding questions that teacher-educators and pre-service teachers should be using when considering AI. We will provide teacher-educators with example activities they can use with their pre-service teachers to introduce AI and integrate its use within their curriculum, framed within the TPACK.

et al.
BackgroundDuring health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, shortages of health care workers often occur. Recruiting students as volunteers could be an option, but it is uncertain whether the idea is well-accepted.
ObjectiveThis study aims to estimate the global rate of willingness to volunteer among medical and health students in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
MethodsA systematic search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar for studies reporting the number of health students willing to volunteer during COVID-19 from 2019 to November 17, 2023. The meta-analysis was performed using a restricted maximum-likelihood model with logit transformation.
ResultsA total of 21 studies involving 26,056 health students were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled estimate of the willingness-to-volunteer rate among health students across multiple countries was 66.13%, with an I2 of 98.99% and P value of heterogeneity (P-Het)<.001. Removing a study with the highest influence led to the rate being 64.34%. Our stratified analyses indicated that those with older age, being first-year students, and being female were more willing to volunteer (P<.001). From highest to lowest, the rates were 77.38%, 77.03%, 65.48%, 64.11%, 62.71%, and 55.23% in Africa, Western Europe, East and Southeast Asia, Middle East, and Eastern Europe, respectively. Because of the high heterogeneity, the evidence from this study has moderate strength.
ConclusionsThe majority of students are willing to volunteer during COVID-19, suggesting that volunteer recruitment is well-accepted.

Linus Ohlsson, Madeleine Abrandt Dahlgren, Katarina Kågedal
et al.
The Medical Programme at Linköping University, committed to Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and interprofessional education, confronted the necessity for pedagogical revitalization due to an upsurge in student numbers, alterations in national physician licensing criteria, and an organizational framework shift. In response to these challenges, stakeholders conducted a comprehensive systematic self-assessment to navigate a course toward a sustainable and contemporary pedagogical transformation.
The methodology employed in this assessment involved a systematic examination of scientific pedagogical literature, policy documents, educational materials, and schedules. Additionally, valuable insights were gathered through teacher and student surveys. Key findings underscore the importance of a balanced approach that grants students more time for self-study and reflection. Enhancing tools and methodologies for constructive alignment is crucial to achieve equilibrium in both theoretical and practical training settings. Moreover, establishing seamless collaborations between the university and teaching hospitals is deemed essential for faculty development and the long-term competence within both organizations.
The self-assessment underscored the critical importance of continuous evaluation in medical educational settings. The approach not only ensures the ongoing relevance of the curricula but also cultivates an environment conducive to student-centred teaching and learning. This, in turn, prepares students for lifelong learning and the diverse challenges in their future medical profession.

Text mining in education
R. Ferreira-Mello, M. Andre, A. Pinheiro
et al.
The explosive growth of online education environments is generating a massive volume of data, specially in text format from forums, chats, social networks, assessments, essays, among others. It produces exciting challenges on how to mine text data in order to find useful knowledge for educational stakeholders. Despite the increasing number of educational applications of text mining published recently, we have not found any paper surveying them. In this line, this work presents a systematic overview of the current status of the Educational Text Mining field. Our final goal is to answer three main research questions: Which are the text mining techniques most used in educational environments? Which are the most used educational resources? And which are the main applications or educational goals? Finally, we outline the conclusions and the more interesting future trends.

Insights from the Frontline: GenAI Utilization Among Software Engineering Students
Rudrajit Choudhuri, Ambareesh Ramakrishnan, Amreeta Chatterjee
et al.
Generative AI (genAI) tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot) have become ubiquitous in software engineering (SE). As SE educators, it behooves us to understand the consequences of genAI usage among SE students and to create a holistic view of where these tools can be successfully used. Through 16 reflective interviews with SE students, we explored their academic experiences of using genAI tools to complement SE learning and implementations. We uncover the contexts where these tools are helpful and where they pose challenges, along with examining why these challenges arise and how they impact students. We validated our findings through member checking and triangulation with instructors. Our findings provide practical considerations of where and why genAI should (not) be used in the context of supporting SE students.

Philosophy of Education and Pedagogy: Peculiarities of Interaction
Leonid Vakhovskyi
Aim. The aim of the article is to determine the status and purpose of philosophy of education, and to identify the peculiarities of its relationship with educational practice and pedagogical science. Concept. Philosophy of education and pedagogy explore different aspects of the same subject field – education. Realising different research functions, they do not act as competitors, but, on the contrary, have the potential for mutual complementarity and reciprocal strengthening of their cognitive capabilities. Results. Philosophy of education as a branch of applied philosophy is not an instrumental tool and cannot directly influence educational practice. It is designed to provide comprehension and understanding of the most important problems of the theory and practice of education. The role of mediator is played by another science of education – pedagogy. Conclusion. The most productive form of relationship between philosophy of education and pedagogical science is their interaction, which contributes to the mutual enrichment, building up and the fullest realisation of their special research capabilities. Pedagogy has a choice of philosophical and educational concepts to develop educational theories which are verified by experiment and directly implemented in practice. Philosophy of education realises its theoretical functions at all stages of educational activity. Cognitive value. The article presents a new perspective on the problem of the relationship between educational philosophy and educational practice. It is argued that the most efficient channel of transferring philosophical and educational ideas into practice is pedagogical science. Keywords: philosophy of education, educational practice, pedagogy, comprehension, understanding, interaction, functions of philosophy of education

DIAGNOSTIC AND INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOR THE PREVENTION OF BEHAVIORAL DISORDERS IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN THE AREA OF FBIH
Lejla Kuralić-Ćišić, Adela Ĉokić, Dţana Sultanić
Educational institutions record an increase in behavioral disorders in children and adolescents every day, with severe symptoms that result in hospitalization or the imposition of criminal sanctions for juvenile delinquents. Behavioral disorders of children and young people stand out as one of the primary problems of today's society. The purpose of this paper is to give a detailed insight into the state of emotional and behavioral disorders, from those that are hidden such as withdrawal, apprehension, fear, anxiety to behavior that children and young people come into conflict with others, even committing acts that are legally recordable as punishable. It has been proven in various studies that early diagnosis and preventive interventions in working with children give the best results. The hypothesis that behavioral disorders and emotional problems among children and young people in primary and secondary schools are present and require the application of appropriate preventive and treatment programs has been confirmed. Through the presentation of modern approaches to the detection, prevention and diagnosis of behavioral problems, this work shows the relationship between biological factors, parental qualities, education, the influence of peers, school and socialnorms, and the way in which they become risky for the development of problematic behavior. Detecting risk factors and stopping the action of risk processes, which have been proven to have a positive correlation with the occurrence of aggressive behavior in children, leads to a decrease in the rate of its occurrence. It has been observed that there are several successful ways of working with children that result in a reduction in the rate of behavioral disorders, even in provoking situations. Communication and problem-solving skills training can successfully reduce inappropriate child behaviors.Teaching social-emotional skills, in addition to reducing behavioral disorders, also results in higher self-esteem and more positive attitudes in children.Schoolshave a need for continuous implementation of science-based prevention programs that include interventions aimed at children and work with parents.

Deep Learning for Opinion Mining and Topic Classification of Course Reviews
Anna Koufakou
Student opinions for a course are important to educators and administrators, regardless of the type of the course or the institution. Reading and manually analyzing open-ended feedback becomes infeasible for massive volumes of comments at institution level or online forums. In this paper, we collected and pre-processed a large number of course reviews publicly available online. We applied machine learning techniques with the goal to gain insight into student sentiments and topics. Specifically, we utilized current Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, such as word embeddings and deep neural networks, and state-of-the-art BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers), RoBERTa (Robustly optimized BERT approach) and XLNet (Generalized Auto-regression Pre-training). We performed extensive experimentation to compare these techniques versus traditional approaches. This comparative study demonstrates how to apply modern machine learning approaches for sentiment polarity extraction and topic-based classification utilizing course feedback. For sentiment polarity, the top model was RoBERTa with 95.5% accuracy and 84.7% F1-macro, while for topic classification, an SVM (Support Vector Machine) was the top classifier with 79.8% accuracy and 80.6% F1-macro. We also provided an in-depth exploration of the effect of certain hyperparameters on the model performance and discussed our observations. These findings can be used by institutions and course providers as a guide for analyzing their own course feedback using NLP models towards self-evaluation and improvement.

I. Semenets-Orlova, A. Klochko, O. Tereshchuk
et al.
The eruption of the COVID-19 pandemic has become a major challenge for educators around the world, forcing educational organizations to look for alternative teaching methods, namely distance learning. It forced the managers of educational organizations to carry out management activities in the conditions of remote work. The article is devoted to the analysis of changes in the content of educational managers’ administrative activities under conditions of transition from traditional (full-time) learning to distance one. The article analyzes the challenges of organizing the educational process in a new context. Authors generalize advantages and disadvantages of blended learning based on the results of a sociological survey of heads of educational institutions in Ukraine. The level of readiness of educational managers to carry out educational activities in a distance format and factors of that are determined. It is emphasized that in managers' activity of distance learning, managers interact with various participants of the educational process. This interaction acquires new forms and new purposes in terms of distance education. It can be productive if the support of the educational environment and the managers' readiness to work in the new realities are determined as a systematic process.
