Understanding the Experiences of Para-Collegiate Student-Athletes: A Mixed Methods Study

Derek Whaley, Jasmine Townsend, Christy Brown et al.

Experiences are the impressions developed through gaining, using, fostering, and sometimes disposing of a service or product. Recent years have shown an ongoing emphasis placed on experiences and their impacts; one of particular interest for this study are the experiences of para-collegiate student-athletes. Using the Experience Type Framework (ETF) and the Experience Impact Scale (EIS), the purpose of this study was to understand the experience of involvement in intercollegiate sports among student-athletes with disabilities. This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, using quantitative and qualitative data to understand the student-athlete with disabilities experience. Phase I (n = 30) used the EIS to measure the impact of para-collegiate sports experiences, while Phase II used semi-structured interviews (n = 11) to identify characteristics of para-collegiate sports experiences. Findings from Phase I indicated that para-collegiate sports presented as highly impactful (23% Meaningful and 77% Transformative), and in Phase II, three overall themes emerged, one for each experience type: (1) importance of the disability community and development of life-long friendships (memorable), (2) holistic growth on and off the court for (meaningful), and (3) sense of purpose and self (transformative).

Beyond the screen: how virtual reality shapes sustainable behaviours in ecotourism through uses and gratifications theory

Remus-Ion Hornoiu, Delia Popescu, Ionuţ-Andrei Militaru et al.

This study examines the relationships between ascribed responsibility, uses and gratifications, behavioural involvement, and visit intentions among Sicilian tourists using virtual reality (VR) to explore Romanian rural ecotourism destinations. Utilizing the Uses and Gratifications theory, it investigates how VR content's informativeness, playfulness, and social interactivity impact user engagement and behavioural intentions. Findings reveal that higher ascribed responsibility enhances gratifications from VR experiences, which increases behavioural involvement, essential for ecotourism. However, ascribed responsibility alone does not directly influence visit intentions, indicating the role of additional factors. A significant contribution of this research is the identification of a serial mediation model where uses and gratifications and behavioural involvement totally mediate the ascribed responsibility-visit intention relationship. This model highlights the complex interplay between cognitive, affective, and behaviouralresponses, demonstrating that ascribed responsibility enhances uses and gratifications, leading to increased behavioural involvement and, ultimately, visit intentions. The study extends the Uses and Gratifications theory into VR and ecotourism, emphasizing environmental responsibility in media engagement. Practical implications include strategies for tourism marketers to foster environmental responsibility and for VR developers to create engaging, informative, and interactive experiences. Policymakers can use these insights to promote sustainable tourism through supportive VR content development.

The result of using wrist brace for treatment of failed conservative management of triangular fibrocartilage complex tear with unstable distal radioulnar joint due to limited modalities: a case report

Steven Theo, Zulham Yamamoto, Mohammad Shahreza et al.

Background and purpose To introduce using non-surgical treatment with a wrist brace even after conservative treatment failed as an alternative to surgical treatment in areas with limited modalities. Material and methods This study is a case report of a 24-year-old male who fell from a motorbike on his left hand and had difficulty supinating, extending, and flexing his left wrist. The ulnar fovea sign and piano key sign were positive. No fracture was found, only soft tissue swelling on the wrist X-ray. The MRI couldn’t be performed due to the patient’s financial and distance limitations related to the MRI facility. After 6 weeks, the conservative management failed to improve the pain in his left wrist. The patient refused surgery and chose to wear a wrist brace (Wrist Widget®). Result After using a wrist brace for 6 months, the patient’s weight-bearing capacity returned to 100%, and his DASH score improved from 70 to 0. The piano key sign was negative; the patient’s wrist ROM returned to 100%, and he can do daily activities without any pain. Finally, the MRI was done at the end of the 6th month since the patient had sufficient funds. This case’s injury type is a partial type 1B tear which is an ulnar avulsion without an ulnar fracture and with DRUJ instability. This type is often associated with DRUJ instability and needs cautious evaluation.  This type has good blood supply because the injury location is located more in the periphery, which is the most compliant to repair and has a good healing feature. On the MRI, there is hyperintensity, which suggests a sign of healing of the TFCC. Conclusion During 6 months of regular usage of this brace, the patient's injured wrist fully recovered.  It is still possible to use non-surgical treatment even after conservative treatment has failed.

Strengthening the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act to Improve Gender Equity Transparency & Institutional Accountability in the Future

Ellen Staurowsky

In 1994, the United States Congress enacted The Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA). The EADA requires colleges and universities receiving federal financial assistance to provide an annual public report on the number of athletic participation opportunities provided to men and women athletes at the varsity level and the allocation of resources and personnel made in support of those opportunities.  The passage of the EADA occurred on the heels of the 20th anniversary of Title IX of the Education Amendments Act, a time marked by the realization that the vast majority of schools around the country were not in compliance with Title IX’s requirements as applied to athletic departments two decades after its passage (NCAA Staff, 1993). The purpose of the EADA when initially proposed in 1993 was to provide accessible information to stakeholders, most specifically prospective students, the public, and the U.S. Congress, that would allow interested parties to raise questions regarding the fair and equitable treatment of women athletes in the nation’s intercollegiate athletic programs. The annual report, colloquially referred to as the EADA report, is officially called The Report on Athletic Program Participation Rates and Financial Support Data. Three decades after the passage of the EADA and five decades after the passage of Title IX, there is reason to question whether the EADA has served its purpose.  During Title IX’s 50th anniversary year, researchers and journalists uniformly reported a systemic failure to comply with Title IX in the area of athletics (Staurowsky et al., 2022; USA Today Staff, 2022; Wilson, 2022). Over the years, some have argued that the EADA should be eliminated (Keen, 2007), others have documented how valuable the information from the EADA is to researchers, journalists, and litigators (Tatos, 2019); others have recommended changes that would strengthen the data collection required under the EADA (Staurowsky et al, 2022); and others have argued that something akin to an EADA requirement needs to be adopted nationwide to help address sweeping gender inequities in athletics at the high school level (Green, 2008). This essay begins with an overview of the current state of Title IX compliance and gender equity in college sport, revisits the history of the EADA, provides an overview of what the EADA covers and who uses it, explores the criticisms and limitations of the EADA, and concludes with recommendations for making the EADA a more effective tool.

Velvet Nelson, Rebecca Marie Torres

Parent Involvement in Young Adults’ Intercollegiate Athletic Careers

Travis E. Dorsch, Katie Lowe, Aryn M. Dotterer et al.

Student-athletes have to balance their sport, academic, and social lives during the transition to college and parent involvement is an integral, but potentially problematic, aspect of this transition. The present study investigated how key parent involvement factors may be associated with positive developmental outcomes in NCAA Division I student-athletes. Student-athlete participants (N = 514) were 46% male, ranged in age from 18 to 25 years (M = 19.76, SD = 1.43), and were recruited from athletic departments at two NCAA Division I member-institutions. Participants completed online surveys with items assessing their perceptions of parent involvement (support from parents, contact with parents, academic engagement, athletic engagement) and student-athlete development (academic self-efficacy, athletic satisfaction, well-being, individuation). After controlling for individual and family demographic factors, parent academic and athletic engagement positively predicted student-athlete academic self-efficacy and athletic satisfaction; parent athletic engagement negatively predicted student-athlete depressive symptoms; all aspects of parent involvement were strong negative predictors of emotional independence; support from parents and parent academic engagement were strong negative predictors of functional independence; and support from parents was a negative predictor and athletic engagement a strong positive predictor of student-athletes’ attainment of adult criteria. The present research enhances understanding of the role parent involvement may play in student-athlete development and thus may inform the creation of evidence-based policy and programming at NCAA Division I member-institutions.

The Impact of a Sport-Based Service Learning Course on Participants’ Attitudes, Intentions and Actions Toward Social Change

Rhema D. Fuller, Justin M. Evanovich, Jennifer E. Bruening et al.

Framed in the context of a sport-based service learning program that engages in interdepartmental university partnerships (including athletics), the current study focused on addressing the need to analyze the long-term impacts of service learning on students’ intentions and actions toward social change. Service learning courses have been shown to facilitate positive outcomes such as increased cultural competency and future intentions toward civic engagement (Bruening et al., 2010, 2014). Building on this knowledge, the current study used in-depth interviews to investigate the social justice-related attitudes, intentions, and behaviors of alumni of a college service learning through sport course. Individual interviews (n = 22) with participants who had completed at least one semester in the course indicated that the course was influential in developing their ability to recognize social inequities. Furthermore, participants indicated future intentions and current involvement in initiatives that address social inequities in their given areas of life. Theoretical and managerial implications for effective academic and intercollegiate athletic partnerships, helping to increase impactful civic engagement and learning opportunities for student-athletes and non-student-athletes, are provided.

Empreendedorismo e marketing urbano : a mercadorização do centro “histórico” de Tiradentes, Minas Gerais, na ótica do turismo = Entrepreneurship and urban marketing: the commodification of the “historic” downtown Tiradentes, Minas Gerais...

Rodrigo Neves, Eder Jurandir Carneiro

Title IX Literacy

Ellen J. Staurowsky, Erianne A. Weight

Celebrated by many and lamented by a vocal few, Title IX holds the distinction of being one of the few pieces of legislation passed by the United States Congress that has emerged as an iconic symbol unto itself. Despite broad familiarity with the term, it remains much less clear how many Americans have more than a superficial understanding of what the law requires. This study was pursued to determine the level of Title IX literacy among a constituency directly impacted by compliance or noncompliance with the legislation, that being college coaches. Results reveal that most college coaches do not have a basic knowledge of the application and extent of the law, have not been educated about Title IX through reliable educational mediums, and possess a desire to learn more and have candid and meaningful discussions about these issues. The lack of consistent and systematic education mechanisms may explain the tensions that arise so frequently around gender equity issues within college and university athletic departments.
