Building China’s EV sector: missions, capacity, experimentation

Alexandre De Podestá Gomes

This paper examines the development of the electric vehicle (EV) industry in China from the perspective of mission-oriented innovation policies. It explores how China’s central and local governments interact to create and shape the industry, with a focus on state capacities and experimentation. Drawing on official policy documents, Chinese news outlets, EV industry data, and interviews, the paper analyzes two cases of local experimentation: one involving low-speed electric vehicles in Shandong province, and another featuring affordable, low-tech micro-EV models in Guangxi province. The paper argues that local governments, by establishing close ties with nontraditional companies and supporting experimentation, perform the functions of peripheral agencies in the context of innovation in new, emerging industries. The central government, in turn, monitors these local experiments, learns from them, and adjusts its national policies accordingly. The findings contribute to broader debates on how state bureaucracies can drive effective industrial transformation, particularly in middle-income countries.

Reliability assessment of learning goal setting orientation survey in Nigerian High Schools: Implications for administration

Chidubem Deborah Adamu

Developing a goal-setting orientation that promotes positive learning achievement among students in Nigeria can be challenging. This study assessed the reliability of the items in the Learning Goal Setting Orientation Survey (LGSOS) for secondary school students in Osun State, Nigeria, and explore the implications for school administrators. A survey research design was utilised, with a mixed-method sampling technique used to select 40 senior secondary one and two students from 20 schools, totaling 800 students. An 84-item self-designed questionnaire titled “LGSOS” was administered to collect data from the student respondents. Results indicated that the items on LGSOS had high reliability indices, with Cronbach's alpha at 0.934, Guttman Split-half at 0.789, Spearman Brown at 0.797, and Lambda at 0.952, effectively measuring goal setting orientations and learning achievement among secondary school students in Osun State, Nigeria. Additionally, the responses showed a weak positive correlation value (r = 0.12) with a p-value less than 0.05, suggesting that school administrators were not consistently implementing learning goal setting orientation as a continuous process. One key implication of the study is the necessity of school administrators to provide resources and support to help students develop and maintain their learning goal setting orientations. The findings highlight the need for further research into revisiting the goal setting orientation of high school students in Southwestern Nigeria to enhance lifelong learning achievement.

Automated monitoring innovations for efficient and safe construction practices

Muhammad Ali Musarat, Abdul Mateen Khan, Wesam Salah Alaloul et al.

As construction projects increase in complexity, there are growing challenges with conventional monitoring methods in terms of efficiency, safety, and competitiveness. Traditional supervision techniques are labour-intensive, intermittent, and prone to errors. Hence, this study statistically evaluates the potential advantages of photogrammetry, sensors, and algorithms to enable continuous automated monitoring. The results of this survey were analysed to compare manual and automated monitoring systems. The outcome shows that the Malaysian construction industry is aware of Automated Monitoring Innovations for Efficient and Safe Construction Practices. The top ranked factor was Photogrammetry which had a relative importance index (RII) of 0.821 for straightforward site monitoring and 0.812 for accelerated 3D BIM modelling. The RII for sensors to track labourers, apparatus, and progress in real time was 0.82, while the RII for hazard anticipation was 0.796. Automation achieved a reduction in fatigue by 0.784, labour intensity by 0.792, and time demands by 0.768, as measured by the RII. A conceptual framework was developed that incorporates measurable improvements in schedules, safety, and quality control. Automated solutions, as opposed to human examinations which are prone to error, provided exhaustive geographical data and ongoing surveillance notwithstanding obstacles pertaining to cost, cybersecurity, privacy, and integration. Construction monitoring must incorporate new technology, strategic change management, data investments, and supporting regulations to increase profitability, safety, and efficiency as competition and complexity increase.

Antioxidant, antimicrobial and healing properties of an extract from coffee pulp for the development of a phytocosmetic

Érica Mendes dos Santos, Lucas Malvezzi de Macedo, Janaína Artem Ataide et al.

Abstract Consumer demand for natural, chemical-free products has grown. Food industry residues, like coffee pulp, rich in caffeine, chlorogenic acid and phenolic compounds, offer potential for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. Therefore, the objective of this work was to develop a phytocosmetic only with natural products containing coffee pulp extract as active pharmaceutical ingredient with antioxidant, antimicrobial and healing activity. Eight samples from Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora Pierre were analyzed for caffeine, chlorogenic acid, phenolic compounds, tannins, flavonoids, cytotoxicity, antibacterial activity, and healing potential. The Robusta IAC—extract had the greatest prominence with 192.92 μg/mL of chlorogenic acid, 58.98 ± 2.88 mg GAE/g sample in the FRAP test, 79.53 ± 5.61 mg GAE/g sample in the test of total phenolics, was not cytotoxic, and MIC 3 mg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus. This extract was incorporated into a stable formulation and preferred by 88% of volunteers. At last, a scratch assay exhibited the formulation promoted cell migration after 24 h, therefore, increased scratch retraction. In this way, it was possible to develop a phytocosmetic with the coffee pulp that showed desirable antioxidant, antimicrobial and healing properties.

Strategic orientation, business model innovation and corporate performance—Evidence from construction industry

Wucheng Han, Yang Zhou, Ruoyu Lu

In the highly competitive Chinese construction market, developing a strategic orientation alone fails to maintain the sustainable competitive advantage of firms. In this paper, the mechanism of strategic orientation and business model innovation on corporate performance in a dynamic environment is investigated. Based on a sample of 356 Chinese construction firms, the partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was adopted to test the hypotheses. It is found that entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation affect corporate performance differently. Unlike market orientation, which directly affects corporate performance, entrepreneurial orientation through business model innovation exerts influence instead of direct affection. Business model innovation plays a fully mediating role between entrepreneurial orientation and corporate performance and partially between market orientation and corporate performance. Meanwhile, environmental dynamism can positively moderate the relationship between business model innovation and corporate performance. This paper deepens the research on strategic orientation, business model innovation and corporate performance. The findings can provide a reference for construction firm managers to develop strategies and conduct business model innovation, which can finally help seek sustainable development in a dynamic environment.

Evaluation of a workplace suicide prevention program in the Australian manufacturing industry: protocol for a cluster-randomised trial of MATES in manufacturing

A. D. LaMontagne, L. L. Cox, C. Lockwood et al.

Abstract Males are at higher risk of death by suicide than females in Australia, and among men, blue-collar males are at higher risk compared to other working males. In response, MATES in Construction developed a workplace suicide prevention program for the construction sector in 2007 that has been widely implemented in Australia. In the current project, this program is being adapted and trialled in the manufacturing sector. The common aims of MATES programs are to improve suicide prevention literacy, help-seeking intentions, and helping behaviours. The program will be evaluated using a cluster randomised-controlled trial design with waitlist controls across up to 12 manufacturing worksites in Australia. We hypothesise that after 8 months of the MATES in Manufacturing program, there will be significantly greater improvements in help-seeking intentions (primary outcome) compared to waitlist controls. The project is led by Deakin University in collaboration with the University of Melbourne, and in partnership with MATES in Construction and a joint labour-management Steering Group. Trial registration: The trial was registered retrospectively with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry on 25 January 2022 (ACTRN12622000122752). Protocol version: 2.0, November 2022.

Effectiveness and response differences of a multidisciplinary workplace health promotion program for healthcare workers

Kai-Hung Cheng, Ning-Kuang Wu, Chao-Tung Chen et al.

BackgroundWorkplace health promotion (WHP) in the healthcare industry is an important yet challenging issue to address, given the high workload, heterogeneity of work activities, and long work hours of healthcare workers (HCWs). This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and response differences of a multidisciplinary WHP program conducted in HCWs.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study included HCWs participating in a multidisciplinary WHP program in five healthcare facilities. The 20-week intervention included multiple easy-to-access 90-min exercise classes, one 15-min nutrition consultation, and behavioral education. Pre- and post-interventional anthropometrics, body composition, and physical fitness (PF) were compared with paired sample t-tests. Response differences across sex, age, weight status, and shiftwork status were analyzed with a generalized estimating equation.ResultsA total of 302 HCWs were analyzed. The intervention effectively improved all anthropometric (body mass index, waist circumference, waist-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio), body composition (body fat percentage, muscle weight, visceral fat area), and PF (grip strength, high jump, sit-up, sit-and-reach, step test) parameters in all participants (all p < 0.05). Subgroup analyses revealed shift workers had a more significant mean reduction in body mass index than non-shift workers (adjusted p = 0.045). However, there was no significant response difference across sex, age, and weight subgroups.ConclusionThis study suggested that a multidisciplinary WHP program can improve anthropometric and PF profiles regardless of sex, age, and weight status for HCWs, and shifter workers might benefit more from the intervention.

Combined Hurdle Technologies Using UVC Waterproof LED for Inactivating Foodborne Pathogens on Fresh-Cut Fruits

Geun-Hyang Kim, Chae-Lim Lee, Ki-Sun Yoon

This study investigated the combined bactericidal efficacy of slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW), fumaric acid (FA), and ultravioletC waterproof light-emitting diodes (UVC W-LED) for the control of Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes in fresh-cut fruits. Cherry tomato, grape, apple, and pineapple were inoculated with S. aureus and L. monocytogenes and then washed with 30 ppm SAEW containing 0.5% FA in a container equipped with two UVC W-LEDs. Behaviors of S. aureus and L. monocytogenes and quality properties of fresh-cut fruits were monitored after storage at 10 °C and 15 °C for 7 days. The most effective reductions of S. aureus (1.65 log CFU/g) and L. monocytogenes (2.63 log CFU/g) were observed in the group with the combined treatment of SAEW + FA and UVC W-LED. At 10 °C and 15 °C, populations of both pathogens in the combined treatment group were lower than those in a control. Combined treatment showed no negative effect on moisture retention in the fruit. Moreover, visual changes were less significant than in the control. These results demonstrate that the combined treatment can improve the microbial safety and the quality of fruits. If it is properly used in the sanitizing step of the fresh produce industry, a positive effect can be expected.
