Cognitive disorder and associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal service at Dilla University Referral Hospital, 2022

Chalachew Kassaw, Tiruwork Wale, Misrak Negash et al.

IntroductionCognition is defined as the mental activity or process of learning information and understanding through reason, experience, and the senses. In Sub-Saharan African nations like Ethiopia, such assessments of a pregnant mother's mental health during antenatal care are uncommon procedures. Instead, there is a greater focus on the physical well-being of the woman and her fetus. As a result, this study aimed to evaluate the cognitive deficits and related factors in a pregnant women attending an antenatal care service.MethodsThis hospital-based cross-sectional study included 415 pregnant women who were receiving antenatal care at Dilla University Referral Hospital in Dilla, Gedeo Zone, Ethiopia. In this study, respondents were chosen using systematic random sampling, and study participants were interviewed using administered questions to gather pertinent data. This study used the OSLO Social Support Scale, the Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test, and the Mini-Mental Status Examination to assess the social support, cognitive status, and current substance use history of a respondent. Descriptive statistics including frequencies, graphs, and percentages were used to describe the results. A logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the connection between independent factors and the outcome variable at a 95 percent confidence level and p < 0.05.ResultAmong all respondents who came for antenatal care visits, only 24 (5.8%) were unmarried (single, divorced, widowed). The mean age of respondents was 26 years old and 155 (37.3%) had attended secondary school. Variables such as strong social support [0.11 (0.03–0.23), p < 0.02], being a follower of orthodox religion [0.24 (0.12–0.39), p < 0.04], ≥5,000 Ethiopian birr monthly income [0.28 (0.17–0.48), p < 0.02], age >26 years old [1.23 (1.14–2.54), p < 0.04], unplanned pregnancy [2.78 (1.45–4.32), p < 0.02], and rural residence [3.90 (2.23–7.34), p < 0.04] were significantly associated with cognitive impairment at 95% confidence interval and a p-value <0.05.ConclusionThis study found that pregnant women who attended antenatal care experienced a significant reduction in cognitive disorders. Additionally, this study revealed adjustable factors such as unwanted pregnancy, social support, and religiosity. It is preferable to check a pregnant woman's cognitive condition at antenatal services and to follow-up on each additional visit.

Language and Pain in Salma’s Poems

ந. N. Chitra

Literature is a medium to picture the environments of human familial life. By attracting language and to wonder the readers; explaining in the short form of witty language style is important and they are Poems. Modern Poetry has been accepted by everyone and has made the period of reading enjoyable which was only for the Pandits in those days. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, if a woman starts to speak for herself, society has been concerned about the idea it is not beautiful for a woman. Though women are also equal in human society she has been denied of basic rights. Today, social emancipation is the movement of speaking and writing in many aspects about untold problems. Feminism is wide-ranging and is observed by all as a movement coming out of the creation of thoughts. From the social origin, women have been suppressed in all aspects as slaves which are realized by feminists. From time immemorial male-dominated societies refused rights to women, and for redeeming the women of slavery of Bharati and Bharathidasan wrote energetic and rational poems that were admired by the world in the 19th and 20th centuries. Starting the revolution by them, it is a new exhilaration in today’s position and a radical contribution of poetry with a liberated feeling in language structuring the in-depth meaning, poetic language of women raised from the deep mind, experience, shuddering others feelings, women creators (poets), women who are facing the pain of complications. Salma is a modern Tamil poet who writes for the liberty of women. In her creations, she handled the language efficiently with full radical vigor and framed to and took about the pains of women. This paper exhibits select poems of Salma with the chosen themes.

The Politics of "Pombilai Orumai": The 2015 Kanan Devan Strike in Kerala, India

Anagha S.

Colonial hegemony was retained in the South Indian plantations of Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Limited, where the workers belonged to marginalized classes. The landless employees were given housing facilities, and this compelled them to remain there for generations despite poor wages. These uneducated and geographically secluded people found it difficult to come out of the plantation labyrinth, and the labour acts or land legislation acts were not much help. In 2015, around 5,000 women workers called “Pombilai Orumai” led a successful strike for a wage increase. The most remarkable aspect of this was the disassociation with political parties and trade unions and the solidarity of women workers despite all odds.

Redefiniciones: Los Otros góticos

Marta Sierra

This article addresses a redefinition of the Gothic genre as a “Red Gothic,” a term that I coin to define the visceral traits of literary and artistic productions of the “horror” genre in Latin America. I center on the works of Mariana Enríquez, placing them in dialogue with those of visual artists Ana Mendieta and Teresa Margolles. This is an initial proposal for further discussion on political uses of the Gothic in Latin America. In response to the violence and discrimination produced by different implementations of Neoliberalism in the region, a growing field of artists and writers work with Gothic imagery in a flexible, hybrid way to create new representations of “monsters” and “cannibals.” By looking at feminist critiques on post-humanism and cyborg identities (Rosi Braidotti, Donna Haraway), I propose that “Red Gothic” embodies those gaps and erasures of different populations that still claim a place in Latin American societies.

Is our feminism bullshit? The importance of intersectionality in adopting a feminist identity

Rhea Ashley Hoskin, Kay E. Jenson, Karen L. Blair

For nearly 50 years, social researchers have chronicled the continued stigmatization of feminism. Past research has evidenced the reluctance of individuals to adopt a feminist identity, despite their agreement with feminist ideals—otherwise known as the Feminist Paradox. The current study drew from a diverse sample (N = 355) and asked participants to provide their definition of feminism. Using a mixed methods approach, the current study aimed to understand how thematic differences in participants’ definitions of feminism were associated with adopting a feminist identity. Participants who emphasized the importance of integrating intersectionality in defining feminism were more likely to identify as a feminist. Conversely, those who defined feminism as exclusively attending to the needs of women were less likely to identify as feminists. The current study found very little negativity towards feminism, by feminists and non-feminists alike. As such, the current study may be indicative of a new Feminist Paradox: one that is more heavily influenced by the incorporation of intersectional politics in addition to negativity or stigmatization. Implications for the broader context of feminist identity and how feminist objectives are represented within mainstream perceptions are discussed.

Utopías de vida privada / Utopia of Private Life

Abstract The article looks at the history of the construction of «private life» since the sixteenth century in order to demonstrate that this sphere is linked, on the one hand, to the difference between men and women, i.e. the construction of sex and gender, and, on the other, h to the residential and urban spaces familiar to Western readers. This historical overview enables us to observe how sexual identity and the creation of «privacy» are both essential to the triumph of moral notions, ideas about the «good life» and the hegemony of the bourgeoisie. It also shows that this culture is in decline, although we do not have sufficient information to analyze what kind of culture is replacing it, or the effects of this replacement on everyday and collective life. With the triumph of the private sphere over the public, both the idea of intimacy and the idea of politics paradoxically disappear. With their disappearance, urban differentiation ends, and perhaps the difference between men and women becomes irrelevant as it is superceded by other spaces and other identities. Keywords: private life, home, gender, politics, city, suburb, bourgeois culture.
