Cross-cultural bereavement rituals in Sesame dramatherapy: An ethnographic study of Zulu, Hindu and Muslim traditions

Nonkululeko Vilakazi

This ethnographic study examines the integration of multicultural bereavement rituals – including South African Zulu mourning practices, Hindu funeral and mourning rites and Muslim burial customs – within the Sesame dramatherapy framework. Conducted in London, United Kingdom, with children and young persons permanently residing there, the study foregrounds the triadic positionality of the researcher as practitioner, scholar and bereaved client. The ethnographic inquiry examines three culturally situated bereavement cases as illustrative exemplars, including researcher reflexivity. In each case, participants faced disruptions to culturally significant mourning practices due to circumstantial constraints. Through role-play and enactment of cultural bereavement rituals in dramatherapy sessions, symbolic and embodied engagement facilitated grief processing, meaning-making and psychosocial integration. The findings highlight how culturally responsive dramatherapy can mediate the impact of interrupted mourning rituals across diverse contexts while allowing the researcher to critically reflect on personal and clinical experiences of loss.

Predicting substance use behaviors with machine learning using small sets of judgment and contextual variables

Sumra Bari, Nicole L. Vike, Byoung-Woo Kim et al.

Abstract Substance use disorder (SUD) is characterized by behaviors of impaired control, physical dependence, social impairments, and risky use, regardless of the substance used—yet no prior work has predicted these behaviors directly. This study of 3476 adults used 15 judgment variables, derived from a picture rating task, with contextual variables to predict the SUD-defining behaviors, recency of four categories of substances being used, and SUD severity. This study achieved up to 83% accuracy and 0.74 AUC ROC for SUD behavior and moderate-high prediction for substance use with a balanced random forest approach, and 84% accuracy for predicting SUD severity. Judgment variable profiles revealed that participants with higher SUD severity are more risk-seeking, less resilient to losses, have more approach behavior, and have less variance in preference. This study argues that distinct constellations of 15 judgment variables yield a scalable system for addiction assessment, which can support research across a broad range of addictions.

Communicative Musicality and Its Relevance to Psychotherapy and Counselling

Oliver Green, Paula Collens

Adult psychotherapy and counselling are often described as “talking therapies”, yet much of what is communicated occurs non-verbally. Reviewing literature from the domains of music, neuroscience, infant studies, psychotherapy, and counselling, this paper explores the implicit musicality that is embedded within and constitutes human communication, and how this informs the therapeutic encounter. The paper draws on the concept of communicative musicality (CM) as a framework for understanding verbal communication in therapy, as this has been under-explored. Two interrelated elements are discussed: the musicality of speech and the rhythms of relational exchange (entitled “rhythm in relating”). These two dimensions of communication may offer a medium for connection, attunement, and co-regulation, in addition to providing insight into the client’s relational and developmental history. Psychotherapy and counselling are presented as fundamentally musical, embodied, and temporal, where meaning is co-created not only through words, but through the musicality of communication. This paper explores elements of music, vocal timbre, dynamics and melodic contours, dissonance and consonance, along with the embodied rhythms of sharing time, repetition, and improvisation, and rhythm in relating that express and constitute affective and interpersonal life. The study highlights how a sensitivity to the musical dimensions of therapeutic dialogue can deepen attunement to the client’s inner world, support relational repair, and enhance therapeutic presence. It proposes that psychotherapy and counselling education would benefit from including a CM-informed approach, enabling practitioners to listen not only to the lexical channel, but also to the musicality and rhythm of communication.

El ojo de la perdiz. Mundo y vida del animal

Leandro Drivet

Subjective Well-Being in People with Nephrotic Syndrome: Exploring Role of Lifestyle and Self-Confidence

Rahel Julia Natali, Arthur Huwae

Sufferers of nephrotic syndrome can be found in both developed and developing countries. All individuals afflicted with nephrotic syndrome, including both children and adults, often experience a loss of hope and find it challenging to attain subjective well-being in their lives. Therefore, this research aims to determine the portrait of subjective well-being in people with nephrotic syndrome by examining the components and factors that influence subjective well-being. The method employed in this research is descriptive qualitative phenomenology. The data collection process in this study utilizes data triangulation, including observation, interviews, and document analysis. Data analysis was conducted using interactive data analysis methods. The findings of this study indicate that, in general, individuals suffering from nephrotic syndrome tend to have low subjective well-being or face difficulties in achieving it in their lives. This is primarily due to individuals being unable to fulfill the components and factors of subjective well-being, often experiencing higher negative affect than positive affect. Additionally, researchers have identified new factors that influence subjective well-being, namely lifestyle and self-confidence.

Fahimeh Rajaei, Akbar Atadokht, Nader Hajloo

The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of group poetry therapy an improving happiness in chronic schizophrenic patients. This experimental study was conducted with a pre-test-post-test design with the control group. The population consisted of patients hospitalized in treatment and rehabilitation centers in Ardabil (2017). Among them, 22 patients were selected and they were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Eleven sessions of group poetry were performed for the experimental group and the control group did not receive any intervention. Oxford happiness questionnaire was used to collect data and the data were analyzed by single variable Covariance analysis through SPSS-22. The results showed that after controlling the pre-test effect, the mean scores of post-test of the patients in the experimental group were higher in happiness than the scores of the control group (p < 0.05). This indicates the effectiveness of group poetry therapy intervention on patients. This study showed that group poetry therapy as a non-pharmacological treatment is effective on chronic schizophrenic patients and can be used by clinical specialists in medical centers.

Psychotherapeutic Correction of Homosexuality. A Case from Clinical Practice

Garnik Kocharyan

The article describes a clinical case with a 17-year-old male patient, who presented complaints about presence of his homosexual desire. He believed that sexual orientation was pathology and existing statements about normality of homosexuality were political propaganda. He wanted to get rid of homosexuality, marry over time and have children. During an active inquiry he informed that the proportion of the homosexual component of his libido in its total structure was 90-95%, that of the heterosexual one being 5-10%. During his active inquiry the patient informed about presence of a minimally expressed heterosexual component, still our comprehensive analysis of his psychosexual development, sexual behavioral manifestations and erotic dreams did not reveal any presence of the heterosexual component. Nevertheless, the latter might be present because from the very beginning the patient felt a slightly expressed sexual desire during heterosexual masturbation. The following correction was made: (1) cognitive influences targeted at strengthening of the patient’s opinion that it is normal to be heterosexual as opposed to homosexual; (2) aesthetic-erotic correction (viewing of beautiful women [naked and non-naked] using video materials for formation of the woman ideal); (3) hypnosuggestive correction of the sexual drive orientation with inclusion of the cognitive and behavioral (aversive) components; (4) prohibition of homosexually oriented masturbation and change over to heterosexually oriented one (sexual behavioral training targeted at reorientation of orientation of his sexual desire). Complete normalization of the patient’s health took place after 10 sessions of hypnosuggestive correction (programming, modelling) and retraining masturbation. The patient remained absolutely satisfied with the achieved results. This clinical observation demonstrates once more effectiveness of reparative therapy with absence of any complications. Here we should emphasize that such therapy can be given only on the voluntary basis.

Resiliensi dan Stres Kerja pada Karyawan yang Bekerja di Masa Pandemi Covid-19

Agatha Trisia Veronica Tampombebu, Sutarto Wijono

This study aims to determine the relationship between resilience and work stress on employees at PT.X who work during the covid-19 pandemic. Participants in this study were employees who served as supervisors at PT.X with a total population of 37 participants. The method used in this study is a quantitative approach, with a non-probability sampling technique, namely a saturated sampling technique by taking the entire population of 37 participants. Measurement of resilience uses the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) with a cronbach alpha of 0.917, while to measure work stress uses the work stress scale of Robbins & Judge (2013) with a cronbach alpha of 0.861. The scale is distributed in the form of a questionnaire, with data analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics version 21 and correlation test using Karl Pearson's Product Moment. the results of data analysis obtained a correlation coefficient r = - 0.380 with a sign value = 0.010 (p <0.05), indicating that the results obtained were significant negative, which means there is a significant negative correlation between resilience and work stress. The higher the resilience, the lower the work stress, and vice versa.

The case of the disappearing twin: How writing brought me closer to my self

Kate Evans

Using writing as a means of inquiry, I aim to analyse a change over-time in my creative writing and consider what this change tells me about myself. In doing so, I endeavour to explore creative writing as both a research and a therapeutic tool and to be innovative in the presentation of research. I intend to encourage all therapists, academics and researchers to uninhibitedly dive into their creative selves in order to become more reflexive and gain understanding, as well as for the pure enjoyment of it.
