Ecological modelling: A computational analysis of air pollution discourses in English print media of India and Pakistan.
Sana Rabbani, Fasih Ahmed
The present study investigates air pollution dynamics through newspaper discourse in India and Pakistan, where both countries rank among the top five countries affected by air pollution. The study focused on newspaper discourses over almost two decades (2005-2023). The study applied Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), a robust algorithm for analyzing the large text corpus. The study underpinned Computational Grounded Theory, which relies on the fact that computation is a way to reveal the hidden meanings beyond the text. The LDA-generated topics reveal that both countries face the toxicological effects of air pollution on health. The primary topics extracted through LDA revolve around discourses related to vehicular emissions, industrial emissions, and urbanization. In addition, the control measures taken by both countries relate to emission standards. The study also has implications for policymakers and planners considering these directions to control air pollution.
The symbolic capital formation of the Arkaim archaeological monument: a historical retrospective
S. I. Simakova
Importance. The multifaceted, complex image of Arkaim, which includes archaeological, historical, mystical, and tourist aspects, has been formed over more than 37 years. From 1987 to the present, the archaeological site has attracted the attention of the mass media, scientific researchers, and government officials. The purpose of the research, the results of which are presented in the study, is to consider the Arkaim image as an element of the symbolic capital of the Chelyabinsk region in the mass media texts, from 1987 to the present, in a historical perspective and from the point of view of the evolution of mass communication media.Materials and Methods. The evolution of the Arkaim image in the texts of the mass communication media from a historical perspective and from the point of view of their evolution is considered. The materials of the mass media, starting from 1987, in a total volume of more than 1,000 units and the results of a survey of visitors to the museum-reserve, conducted in 2023 and 2024, are analyzed. The main research methods re the comparative historical method, thematic analysis and survey. Results and Discussion. For ease of review, the material is divided into three periods: 1) 1987– 1997, when there was a struggle to save the archaeological site from flooding and its image was being built; it was during this period that mystical and anti-scientific myths were formed around Arkaim; 2) 1997–2007, when the search for Arkaim’s identity was underway; 3) 2007 – present, when Arkaim functions as a tourist center, attracting the attention of both lovers of scientific tourism, mystical and spiritual practices, research scientists, and government officials. Historically, these periods correspond to turning points in the history of Russia, it is considered how exactly the historical background influenced the formation of the image of Arkaim. In terms of mass media development, the periods identified correspond to the heyday of “traditional” media (TV, radio and print media), in the second period they are replaced by online media, and in the third period they are replaced by social media. As a result of the radical change in the type and form of communication, the development format of the image as an element of the symbolic capital of the Chelyabinsk region also changes.Conclusion. The formation of the symbolic capital of Arkaim went through three key stages, reflecting both historical transformations in Russia and the evolution of the media – from the struggle to preserve the monument to its mythologization and modern positioning as a tourist and spiritual center. An imbalance is revealed between the official scientific and historical image of Arkaim in the media and its perception by the audience as a “place of power”, which requires hybrid media strategies combining factuality and cultural meanings. Arkaim has the potential to be included in the national idea of Russia, but its further development depends on the harmonization of scientific, spiritual and tourist discourses while maintaining authenticity.

A Critical Discourse Analysis on the Novel The Name of the Rose from the Perspective of Foucauldian Relationship between Knowledge, Power, and Subjectivity
Ayten Bengisu Cansever
At first glance, although Umberto Eco’s novel The Name of the Rose seemingly depicts a murder in 14th-century medieval Italy, it whispers to its readers about the power held by the church, the conflicts between religious orders, philosophy, the dominant worldview of the era, knowledge production and dissemination, librarianship, and the dark Europe of the Middle Ages. In academic literature, The Name of the Rose has been extensively studied in terms of its literary techniques, symbols, and narrative structure. A review of the literature reveals studies to have focused on various aspects, including semiotic analyses, discussions on postmodern literary techniques and symbols, interrogations of scientific knowledge and reality, analyses of detective and murder plots, examinations of library science and librarianship, explorations of mass media and sociology of religion, and the integration of literary works with the history of science and philosophy. In contrast to the existing literature, this study employs a critical discourse analysis using the Foucauldian paradigm of knowledgepower-subject relations to scrutinize the character relationships, narrative structure, and other defining elements presented in Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose. This study’s findings suggest the novel’s narrative construction of church authority to be aimed at maintaining its legitimacy by controlling the production and distribution of knowledge. As places where knowledge is preserved and disseminated, libraries in this context are portrayed differently from their contemporary understanding and are depicted as structures that store and protect books. Furthermore, Eco reconfigures the relationship among knowledge, power, and subject in the transition from a theocentric to an anthropocentric worldview, allegorically portraying the first steps of the Enlightenment era in his narrative. In conclusion, this study is envisioned to inspire future research endeavors by unveiling the intricate relationship among knowledge, power, and subject from a Foucauldian perspective through the lens of The Name of the Rose. While this study is confined to the analysis of The Name of the Rose, future investigations comparing how different literary works or artistic expressions address this relationship could offer deeper insights.

Digitale Lernplattformen im Medizinstudium – Chancen nutzen, Vielfalt fördern
Freitag, Katharina, Krause, Mareike
Digital learning and self-assessment tools have gained importance in medical education over the last years and are pushing back print media more and more. They enable flexible learning that is aligned with current state exams and the latest scientific findings. Embedded videos, interactive graphics and practice questions offer a more diverse learning experience than using books alone. While the commercial learning tools cover the state examinations’ content well, they often lack what is additionally taught in different faculties. At the same time, the dominance of a few providers is tied to rising costs for students or to provide campus licenses. Faculties may thus offer literature and learning platforms of less variety, and an intensive and broad examination of subjects and problems is made more difficult. The promotion and nationwide availability of locally initiated non-commercial learning and examination tools can counteract this development.Electronic learning platforms enable efficient exam preparation with the presentation of exam questions. Paper-based preparatory exams have already been almost completely replaced by their electronic counterparts. Digital exams offer decisive advantages over paper-based exams, for example with the embedding of video sequences and increased feasibility of sequential questions, and should become standard not only in exam preparation.

Borderland (Narco) Folk Saints and Texas Media
Amy J. King
This study investigates and reflects upon the interpretations of (narco) folk saints on the Texas–Mexico border by analyzing their recent representations in local Texan and national U.S. print media. These articles portray the melding of religion and crime to promote anti-immigration ideas and politics in Texas. To understand the connection between culture and crime on the Texas–Mexico border, this essay first delves into each aspect individually, providing their origins and historical context. An analysis of U.S. and Mexican statistics illustrates that many of the societal issues spurring the creation and devotion of folk saints remain prevalent in borderland culture today, including governmental shortcomings, dissatisfaction with the Church, social conditions, and media prejudice. The ubiquity of these themes in borderland daily life continuously incites more (narco) folk saint devotees, and Texas print media further distort the relationship among religion, culture, and crime until they eventually become inseparably intertwined in popular public opinion.

Decision-Making Regarding the Continuation of Contraceptive Implant within 1 Year of Childbirth: A Comparison between Adolescents Receiving Individual Counseling through Print Media and Adolescents Receiving Video-Based Group Counseling
Teerapan Seehanantawong, Siriya Kitiyodom
Objectives: To compare the continuation rates of contraceptive implant within 1 year of childbirth between adolescents receiving individual counseling through educational brochures and adolescents receiving video-based group counseling.Materials and Methods: This research was a prospective study of non-inferior trials in 272 postpartum adolescent mothers which compared between individual counseling and video-based group counseling. The video was created with introductory content about all methods of contraception including their advantages and side effects. The decision-making regarding the continuation of contraceptive implant usage would then be followed-up within 1 year. Criterion for non-inferiority was at a lower limit of < -7% for the 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: The adolescent mothers in this study were at the average age of 17 years old, and most of them were living with their husbands. The follow-up found that the decision rates of continuing the use of contraceptive implants comparing between those who received video-based group counseling and individual counseling at 6 months were 77% and 72.8% (95% CI = -5.8, 14.2), at 1 year were 69.4% and 65.0% (95% CI = -6.4, 15.3), with the lower confidence limit being inside the non-inferiority limit of -7%. It can be interpreted that video-based group counseling was not less effective than individual counseling at 6 months and 1 year. Conclusion: Evidence of non-inferiority was noted comparing individual counseling and video-based group counseling. The systematic and complete provision of information would facilitate the decision-making of adolescents, hence increasing the continuation rate of contraceptive implant.

Restoration of Santa Maria in Barbera del Valles. Scars are also part of History
Belén Onecha Pérez, Alicia Dotor Navarro, José Luis González Moreno-Navarro
Santa María de Barberà del Vallès is a Romanesque church that houses one of the most important wall paintings of its time, not only from an artistic point of view, but also because they are kept on-site. In 2006, the opening movement of the large crack that divided the apse and the triumphal arch where the wall paintings were was detected. Establishing the cause of the crack required several phases of previous studies to understand the building and its environment. The preservation works, which brought us a series of surprises, were carried out in 2014. The last objective was the restoration of the Romanesque frescoes. The link between the architectural restoration and restoration of the paintings was the perception of the large historical crack. Once the issue of the origin of the crack was solved, should we keep the crack trace or should we instead make it up?

Creatures of Myth and Modernity: Representations of Shōjō in the Meiji Era
Daniel J. Wyatt
This study investigates the multiple representations of shōjō in the translated literature and print media of Japan’s Meiji era. It explores the origins of the shōjō as a yōkai, or mythical being of traditional folklore and Noh theatre, through to its unveiling as a real-life creature of the modern world, as an orangutan, initially at misemono sideshows, before its introduction to the Tokyo public at the Ueno Zoo, in 1898. The zoo, as a new framework for ordering the relationship between people and the natural world, is one of the cultural systems through which knowledge of the shōjō was constructed, circulated and experienced in this period. Examining such materials, the paper reveals contesting knowledge systems that contributed to modern experience. Translation also plays an important role in this process, and the translated literature of this era is explored and foregrounded here as an active contributor to the creation and transition of knowledge of exotic animals like the shōjō in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Japan.

with dowel in the case-type furniture
Mosayeb Dalvand, Ghanbar Ebrahimi, Mahdi Tajvidi
et al.
The goal of this study was to investigate bending moment resistance of doweled joint with plywood members. Joint members were out of 11-ply hardwood plywood (Hornbeam, Beech and Alder) that were 19 mm in thickness. Dowels were fabricated out of Beech and Hornbeam species. Their diameters (6, 8 and 10 mm) and depths of penetration (9, 13 and 17 mm) in joint members were chosen variables in this experiment. Results have shown that bending moment resistance, increases with increase of dowel’s diameter and its penetration depth. Joints made with dowels of Beech had higher resistance than dowels of Beech ones. Highest bending moment resistance (44.29 N.m) were observed in joint made with dowels of Beech which were 10 mm in diameter and their depth of penetration was 17 mm. Lowest bending moment resistance (12.08 N.m) was observed in joints having Hornbeam dowels with 6 mm diameter and 9 mm penetrations

Cluster-randomised trial to evaluate the ‘Change for Life’ mass media/ social marketing campaign in the UK
Croker Helen, Lucas Rebecca, Wardle Jane
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Social marketing campaigns offer a promising approach to the prevention of childhood obesity. Change4Life (C4L) is a national obesity prevention campaign in England. It included mass media coverage aiming to reframe obesity into a health issue relevant to all and provided the opportunity for parents to complete a brief questionnaire (‘How are the Kids’) and receive personalised feedback about their children’s eating and activity. Print and online C4L resources were available with guidance about healthy eating and physical activity. The study aims were to examine the impact of personalised feedback and print material from the C4L campaign on parents’ attitudes and behaviours about their children’s eating and activity in a community-based cluster-randomised controlled trial.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Parents of 5–11 year old children were recruited from 40 primary schools across England. Schools were randomised to intervention or control (‘usual care’). Basic demographic data and brief information about their attitudes to their children’s health were collected. Families in intervention schools were mailed the C4L print materials and the ‘How are the Kids’ questionnaire; those returning the questionnaire were sent personalised feedback and others received generic materials. Outcomes included awareness of C4L, attitudes to the behaviours recommended in C4L, parenting behaviours (monitoring and modelling), and child health behaviours (diet, physical activity and television viewing). Follow-up data were collected from parents by postal questionnaire after six months. Qualitative interviews were carried out with a subset of parents (n = 12).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>3,774 families completed baseline questionnaires and follow-up data were obtained from 1,419 families (37.6%). Awareness was high in both groups at baseline (75%), but increased significantly in the intervention group by follow-up (96% vs. 87%). Few parents (5.2% of the intervention group) returned the questionnaire to get personalised feedback. There were few significant group differences in parental attitudes or parenting and child health behaviours at follow-up. Physical activity was rated as less important in the intervention group, but a significant group-by-socioeconomic status (SES) interaction indicated that this effect was confined to higher SES families. Similar interactions were also seen for physical activity monitoring and child television time; with adverse effects in higher SES families and no change in the lower SES families. Effects were little better in families that completed the questionnaire and received personalised feedback. At interview, acceptability of the intervention was modest, although higher in lower SES families.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The C4L campaign materials achieved increases in awareness of the campaign, but in this sample had little impact on attitudes or behaviour. Low engagement with the intervention appeared a key issue.</p> <p>Trial registration number</p> <p>Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN00791709.</p>

The Frari bell tower in Venice: study and restoration
Ilaria Cavaggioni, Alberto Lionello, Angela Squassina
The preliminary study, project and restoration process of the bell tower of the Frari church in Venice is an exemplary case of intervention on a historic building. This intervention started within depth research into the documentary data along with a detailed study of the material fabric which has made it possible to compare the verisimilitude and gaps in the historic sources, the evolution of the building, its built reality and the effects of the repair works carried out in the past at the same time as the damages in the fabric were monitored. Thanks to the knowledge thus gleaned, the restoration works proceeded with great caution in order to respect the material history of the building and short and long-term structural compatibility.

The advertising of financial products in the press
Heather Adams, Laura Cruz García
Although experts on advertising and the discourse of advertising have traditionally presented a series of features common to all adverts, the incidence of these features depends on a number of factors, including the type of product being promoted, the market being addressed and the media used. This article presents the results obtained from an analysis of a corpus of English print adverts for financial products focussing on lexical, semantic, syntactic and pragmatic aspects. Initial research determined the salient features of this type of advert enabling us subsequently to observe the extent to which they differ from adverts for consumer goods in general. The rapid expansion of this product sector and its advertising over recent decades makes it a particularly interesting area to study, while industry estimates predict that the money spent on advertising in this sector will increase substantially over the next five years, ensuring its relevance as a field of study. This paper, and the material involved, can be useful in itself as a description of a particular discourse, but can also be regarded as a tool to be used in translation, translator training and the teaching of English for specific purposes.
