Investigation of Microstructure and Mechanical Behavior of Nanomodified Cement-Based Materials
Spyridoula G. Farmaki, Dimitrios A. Exarchos, Vasileios Dracopoulos
et al.
Recent advances in nanotechnology have highlighted the transformative potential of carbon-based nanomaterials, such as carbon nanofibers, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, in cementitious systems. These materials have shown a remarkable ability to enhance the mechanical strength, fracture toughness, and overall functional performance of cementitious composites. Their nanoscale dimensions and exceptional intrinsic properties allow for effective stress bridging, crack arrest, and matrix densification. Despite these promising features, the current understanding remains limited, particularly regarding their application to concrete. Furthermore, literature lacks systematic, parallel evaluations of their respective effectiveness in improving both mechanical performance and long-term durability, as well as their potential to impart true multifunctionality to concrete structures. It is worth noting that significant and statistically significant improvements in fracture behavior were observed at specific nanofiller concentrations, suggesting strong potential for the material system in next-generation innovative infrastructure applications. Experimental results demonstrated that both CNTs and GNPs significantly enhanced the mechanical performance of concrete, with flexural strength increases of approximately 49% and 38%, and compressive strength improvements of 22% and 47%, respectively, at optimum contents of 0.6 wt.% CNTs and 0.8 wt.% GNPs. SEM analyses confirmed improved matrix densification and interfacial bonding at these concentrations, while higher dosages led to agglomeration and reduced performance. This gap highlights the need for targeted experimental studies to elucidate the structure-property relationships governing these advanced materials.

Renal metastasis of gastric cancer caused acute kidney injury which resulted with hemodialysis: case report and literature review
Ivo Dilber, Stjepko Pleština, Stjepko Pleština
et al.
Gastric cancer ranks fourth among the most commonly diagnosed cancers, with over a million new cases diagnosed worldwide each year. Acute and chronic kidney damage are common in patients with malignant diseases and are associated with increased risk of complications and mortality. Rarely, acute renal insufficiency may result from bilateral infiltration of renal parenchyma by tumor cells from another organ. We present a case of a patient with clinical suspected gastric cancer and metastases to the kidneys leading to acute renal failure requiring hemodialysis. Despite gastric biopsies, no tumor cells were found, while histopathological examination of enlarged intra-abdominal lymph node biopsy material confirmed adenocarcinoma of signet ring cell originating from the digestive system. Stomach cancer was identified as the most likely primary site after the kidney biopsy was performed. To the best of our knowledge, no case of gastric cancer leading to kidney metastases and acute renal failure requiring renal replacement therapy was yet described. Multidisciplinary collaboration among oncologists, urologists, radiologists, pathologists, and nephrologists is essential for the optimal treatment outcome of these patients, who generally have a poor prognosis.

Relationship between indoor environmental quality and guests’ comfort and satisfaction at green hotels: A comprehensive review
Abdulaali Hayder Saadoon, Usman Ismar M. S., Alqawzai Shagea
Recent studies have focused on different aspects of green management, practices, and green consumption in the hotel industry. However, there is a need to explore and better understand the association between indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and green hotel guest’s comfort. Therefore, it is essential to explore the effects of IEQ on the comfort and satisfaction of green hotel guests. This study conducts a comprehensive review of the effects of various IEQ parameters, including indoor air quality, thermal comfort, lighting, visual/view, acoustic comfort, building characteristics, decoration, and indoor greenery, on guest’s comfort and satisfaction in green hotels. Based on previous literature, it was also revealed that most current green building schemes lack of comprehensive evaluation of the performance of IEQ dimensions in green hotels. It was also observed that these IEQ parameters show a significant influence on the hotel guest’s comfort and satisfaction. Based on the findings of the literature review, a conceptual model was developed to represent the relationship between the IEQ parameters and guest’s comfort and satisfaction. The proposed conceptual model can be implemented by the hotel management for a comprehensive assessment of guests’ perceptions toward the IEQ in green hotels. The novelty of this study is based on its findings that establish a more effective IEQ evaluation method and serve as the reference scenario of IEQ, which can be a useful tool for both academician and practitioners and contribute to improving the indoor environmental performance of green hotels through highlighting the key IEQ parameters, which affect the comfort and satisfaction of hotel guests.

O. M. Perminova, N. P. Ustinova, E. A. Trefilova
Today one of the most strategically important directions of improvement of the activity of educational institutions becomes the implementing of technology of mentoring in the educational system. The need for mentoring is due to the fact that rapid changes in the education system, transformation of organizational processes require that all participants of educational relations flexible and instant reaction. Mentoring allows to connect professional development, resistance to change, the formation of new competencies, as well as mutual social exchange in an integrated approach to each participant of the educational process. Despite discussions of scholars and practitioners concerning mentoring problems, there is no single methodological approach to the organization of mentoring system in an educational institution of higher education as a unit of innovative educational system. The article analyzes the history of development, principles and types of mentoring, reveals the content of mentoring system; presents the results of the author’s research and suggests a mechanism for organizing a mentoring system in an educational institution of higher education. As a tool for the development of the mentoring system at the university, it is proposed to create a community – a club for the development of meta-skills within the educational institution.

The Effectiveness of the Presidential Threshold Concept in the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Election System in Indonesia
alwi al hadad, Ade Kurniawan, Irdan Nurdiansyah
This study aims to analyze how the effectiveness of the presidential threshold concept is implemented in the presidential and vice presidential elections in Indonesia. The theory used is the theory of democracy associated with political parties and elections. The method used in this study uses a normative approach by analyzing the law on the symptoms that exist in the election process, and using a qualitative approach by collecting existing data in literacy and literature. The results of the discussion show that the process of using the presidential threshold in the election results in pros and cons and conflicts in it because of various understandings and incompatibilities with the social life that exists in Indonesian society, which incidentally each region has its own culture. The character of the presidential threshold seems to be a planting bomb for every political party that carries each candidate because the strategies and steps that are determined can make a wrong position and have a negative impact on the related political parties

Monika Grabowska, Witold Ucherek
The article focuses on the French summaries of BA & MA theses written by students of French philology at the University of Wrocław between 2015 and 2020. The objective is to determine to what extent the linguistic, discursive and intellectual dimensions of this short academic text constitute, for the students, a source of challenges during the writing process. The general conclusion is that very often the summary of a diploma thesis looks like a report detailing the activities of the student, instead of summarizing an intellectual trajectory and informing of the results of the research.

Mechanical behaviour and microstructural evolution in fine grain Ti-6Al-4V alloy under superplastic conditions
Despax Laurie, Vidal Vanessa, Delagnes Denis
et al.
Ti-6Al-4V is able to support high level of deformations like superplastic deformation for aeronautical structural applications. However, the applied temperature during forming induces changes in phase fraction, which may have an impact on the mechanisms of deformation involved and the final part. Mechanisms described in the literature, like dislocation glide, diffusional creep, Grain Boundary Sliding (GBS) accommodated by dislocation or diffusion, are still controversial as there are mainly based on post mortem analysis or on stress-strain data. The purpose of this work was to combine interrupted tensile tests and heat treatments to improve the understanding of the mechanisms of deformation on each stage of deformation. The chosen test temperatures were 750°C and 920°C which correspond to different β phase fractions. The microstructural features like grain size and phase fraction were studied by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) combined with image analysis. Moreover, EBSD was used to follow the change of crystalline orientation of α grains to distinguish the involved mechanisms as a function of the deformation. Indeed, it would appears that several mechanisms could be activated depending on the deformation stage and on the temperature.

“To fulfill a private obligation”: Marianne Moore, Her Patrons, and the Social Economy of the Gift
Síofra McSherry
This paper focuses on material and financial gifts received by the American modernist poet Marianne Moore (1887-1972) under the auspices of patronage. Extrapolated from Moore’s letters, archival ephemera, and the work of her biographers, Moore’s main patronage relationships are analyzed as gift exchange cycles encompassing financial support, material gifts, and the writing produced by the poet. The reading draws from ethnographic literature on the gift economy in the tradition of Marcel Mauss, Claude Lévi-Strauss, and Lewis Hyde. After a brief outline of the role of the patron in the avant-garde circles of the early 1920s, Moore's interactions with several key benefactors are examined: Scofield Thayer, James Sibley Watson Jr., and Bryher. The paper aims to demonstrate first, how patronage may be considered a gift economy, outlining the effects and functions of such a system, and second, how such a reading may assist in the interpretation of patronage interactions.

Acute Fibrinous and Organizing Pneumonia Associated With Allogenic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Successfully Treated With Corticosteroids
Lam-Phuong Nguyen DO, Stella Ahdoot MD, Narin Sriratanaviriyakul MD
et al.
Acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia (AFOP) is an extremely rare, relatively new, and distinct histological pattern of acute lung injury characterized predominately by the presence of intra-alveolar fibrin and associated organizing pneumonia. AFOP may be idiopathic or associated with a wide spectrum of clinical conditions. It has a variable clinical presentation from mild respiratory symptoms to that similar to the acute respiratory distress syndrome. Currently there is no consensus on treatment, and corticosteroids previously were of unclear benefit. To date, there are less than 40 cases of AFOP reported in the literature and only one has been linked to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Here we report the first case series of 2 patients who developed AFOP following allogenic stem cell transplant that were successfully treated with high-dose corticosteroids.

Yield Responses of Black Spruce to Forest Vegetation Management Treatments: Initial Responses and Rotational Projections
Peter F. Newton
The objectives of this study were to (1) quantitatively summarize the early yield responses of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) to forest vegetation management (FVM) treatments through a meta-analytical review of the scientific literature, and (2) given (1), estimate the rotational consequences of these responses through model simulation. Based on a fixed-effects meta-analytic approach using 44 treated-control yield pairs derived from 12 experiments situated throughout the Great Lakes—St. Lawrence and Canadian Boreal Forest Regions, the resultant mean effect size (response ratio) and associated 95% confidence interval for basal diameter, total height, stem volume, and survival responses, were respectively: 54.7% (95% confidence limits (lower/upper): 34.8/77.6), 27.3% (15.7/40.0), 198.7% (70.3/423.5), and 2.9% (−5.5/11.8). The results also indicated that early and repeated treatments will yield the largest gains in terms of mean tree size and survival. Rotational simulations indicated that FVM treatments resulted in gains in stand-level operability (e.g., reductions of 9 and 5 yr for plantations established on poor-medium and good-excellent site qualities, resp.). The challenge of maintaining coniferous forest cover on recently disturbed sites, attaining statutory-defined free-to-grow status, and ensuring long-term productivity, suggest that FVM will continue to be an essential silvicultural treatment option when managing black spruce plantations.

Monique Pfau

Interfacing Gender Studies and Translation Studies comes as an important fragment to be studied since the transmission of intellectual work is found in ongoing discussions intermediated through translation which faces cultural issues. Nonetheless, there are issues regarding power relations which “centralize” certain academic cores. However, this has already been very visible among several authors who urge to make other countries visible; they are often seen as “peripherical” in the field of production of academic knowledge regarding Gender Studies; they also deal with the need of extending the dialogue more universally. Cultural translation comes as a crucial factor to disseminate these several discourses.

Fernando Gabriel Pagnoni Berns

Analysis of lower limb alignment in overweight children. DOI: 10.5007/1980-0037.2011v13n2p124
Alessandra Rezende Martinelli, Moisés Oliveira Purga, Alessandra Madia Mantovani
et al.
Overweight and obesity have reached epidemic proportions, especially among schoolchildren, and have become a global health problem. Many adaptations in postural organization are observed in overweight and obese children, which have serious consequences. Posture assessment contributes to the understanding of these changes. The aim of this study was to assess changes in lower limb posture of overweight and obese children using a specific method. Twenty-two subjects, 9 girls and 13 boys, aged 5-9 years participated in the study. Posture was assessed by photogrammetry using the SAPo software. The lower limb joint angles and plantar projection of the center of gravity were analyzed. Nonparametric and descriptive statistics were used, in addition to the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (p < 0.05) for comparison between genders. Both groups showed anterior pelvic tilt and slight rotation (to the right in girls and to the left in boys), hyperextension, and valgus knees and ankles. The center of gravity presented 26.95% anteriorization. In conclusion, posture assessment in this population was consistent with literature findings and the method used permitted the quantification of data for future comparisons.
