Patricia Tartacovsky, Clementina Mazzini

A Case for a "Refutations and Critiques" Track in Statistics Journals

Zhen Li

The statistics community, which has traditionally lacked a transparent and open peer-review system, faces a challenge of inconsistent paper quality, with some published work containing substantial errors. This problem resonates with concerns raised by Schaeffer et al. (2025) regarding the rapid growth of machine learning research. They argue that peer review has proven insufficient to prevent the publication of ``misleading, incorrect, flawed or perhaps even fraudulent studies'' and that a ``dynamic self-correcting research ecosystem'' is needed. This note provides a concrete illustration of this problem by examining two published papers, Wang, Zhou and Lin (2025) and Liu et al. (2023), and exposing striking and critical errors in their proofs. The presence of such errors in major journals raises a fundamental question about the importance and verification of mathematical proofs in our field. Echoing the proposal from Schaeffer et al. (2025), we argue that reforming the peer-review system itself is likely impractical. Instead, we propose a more viable path forward: the creation of a high-profile, reputable platform, such as a ``Refutations and Critiques'' track on arXiv, to provide visibility to vital research that critically challenges prior work. Such a mechanism would be crucial for enhancing the reliability and credibility of statistical research.

Mapping the changing structure of science through diachronic periodical embeddings

Zhuoqi Lyu, Qing Ke

Understanding the changing structure of science over time is essential to elucidating how science evolves. We develop diachronic embeddings of scholarly periodicals to quantify "semantic changes" of periodicals across decades, allowing us to track the evolution of research topics and identify rapidly developing fields. By mapping periodicals within a physical-life-health triangle, we reveal an evolving interdisciplinary science landscape, finding an overall trend toward specialization for most periodicals but increasing interdisciplinarity for bioscience periodicals. Analyzing a periodical's trajectory within this triangle over time allows us to visualize how its research focus shifts. Furthermore, by monitoring the formation of local clusters of periodicals, we can identify emerging research topics such as AIDS research and nanotechnology in the 1980s. Our work offers novel quantification in the science of science and provides a quantitative lens to examine the evolution of science, which may facilitate future investigations into the emergence and development of research fields.

Polski plakat prasowy 1948–1989 – opracowanie na podstawie zbiorów Muzeum Niepodległości w Warszawie

Andrzej Kotecki

Nadszedł chyba jednak czas, by ten zakres tematyczny doczekał się własnych opracowań monograficznych.

Reactive single-step hot-pressing and magnetocaloric performance of polycrystalline Fe$_2$Al$_{1.15-x}$B$_2$Ge$_x$Ga$_x$ ($x=0, 0.05$) MAB phases

Benedikt Beckmann, Tarek A. El-Melegy, David Koch et al.

Reactive single-step hot-pressing at 1473 K and 35 MPa for 4 h produces dense, bulk, near single-phase, low-cost and low-criticality Fe$_2$Al$_{1.15}$B$_2$ and Fe$_2$Al$_{1.1}$B$_2$Ge$_{0.05}$Ga$_{0.05}$ MAB samples, showing a second-order magnetic phase transition with favorable magnetocaloric properties around room temperature. The magnetic as well as magnetocaloric properties can be tailored upon Ge and Ga doping, leading to an increase of Curie temperature $T_C$ and spontaneous magnetization $m_S$. The maximum isothermal entropy change $Δs_{T,max}$ of hot-pressed Fe$_2$Al$_{1.15}$B$_2$ in magnetic field changes of 2 and 5 T amounts to 2.5 and 5 J(kgK)$^{-1}$ at 287.5 K and increases by Ge and Ga addition to 3.1 and 6.2 J(kgK)$^{-1}$ at 306.5 K, respectively. The directly measured maximum adiabatic temperature change $ΔT_{ad,max}$ is improved by the composition modification from 0.9 to 1.1 K in magnetic field changes of 1.93 T. Overall, we demonstrate that hot-pressing provides a much faster, more scalable and processing cost reducing alternative compared to conventional synthesis routes to produce heat exchangers for magnetic cooling devices. Therefore, our criticality assessment shows that hot-pressed Fe-based MAB phases provide a promising compromise of material and processing cost, criticality and magnetocaloric performance, demonstrating the potential for low-cost and low-criticality magnetocaloric applications around room temperature.

Study of variations of citation-based parameters for selected Indian science journals

Bidyarthi Dutta

The ratio of the total number of citations to the total number of cited papers was predicted as a constant by Garfield. But, later he observed the changing nature of this constant over time. Scientometricians thus preferred to call it Garfield Ratio rather than Garfield Constant. The Garfield Ratio is a very well-known citation-based parameter, which actually indicates the average citation per cited article. However, Garfield still pointed out that behind this ratio some deeper regularity may be found. In this paper, an analysis of this indicator, the Garfield Ratio is attempted for twelve distinguished Indian science journals over twelve years time span ranging from 2009 to 2020.

A Bayesian Approach for Shaft Centre Localisation in Journal Bearings

Christopher A. Lindley, Scott Beamish, Rob Dwyer-Joyce et al.

It has been shown that ultrasonic techniques work well for online measuring of circumferential oil film thickness profile in journal bearings; unfortunately, they can be limited by their measuring range and unable to capture details of the film all around the bearing circumference. Attempts to model the film thickness over the full range of the bearing rely on deterministic approaches, which assume the observations to be true with absolute certainty. Unaccounted uncertainties of the film thickness may lead to a cascade of inaccurate predictions for subsequent calculations of hydrodynamic parameters. In the present work, a probabilistic framework is proposed to model the film thickness with Gaussian Processes. The results are then used to estimate the location of the bearing shaft under various operational conditions. A further step in the process involves using the newly-constructed dataset to generate likelihood maps displaying the probable location of the shaft centre, given the bearing rotational speed and applied static load. The results offer the possibility to visualise the confidence of the predictions and allow the true location to be found within an area of high probability within the bearing's bore.

In this article, we present {\it GenderedNews} (\url{https://gendered-news.imag.fr}), an online dashboard which gives weekly measures of gender imbalance in French online press. We use Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods to quantify gender inequalities in the media, in the wake of global projects like the Global Media Monitoring Project. Such projects are instrumental in highlighting gender imbalance in the media and its very slow evolution. However, their generalisation is limited by their sampling and cost in terms of time, data and staff. Automation allows us to offer complementary measures to quantify inequalities in gender representation. We understand representation as the presence and distribution of men and women mentioned and quoted in the news -- as opposed to representation as stereotypification. In this paper, we first review different means adopted by previous studies on gender inequality in the media : qualitative content analysis, quantitative content analysis and computational methods. We then detail the methods adopted by {\it GenderedNews} and the two metrics implemented: the masculinity rate of mentions and the proportion of men quoted in online news. We describe the data collected daily (seven main titles of French online news media) and the methodology behind our metrics, as well as a few visualisations. We finally propose to illustrate possible analysis of our data by conducting an in-depth observation of a sample of two months of our database.

A Universal Quantum Circuit Design for Periodical Functions

Junxu Li, Sabre Kais

We propose a universal quantum circuit design that can estimate any arbitrary one-dimensional periodic functions based on the corresponding Fourier expansion. The quantum circuit contains N-qubits to store the information on the different N-Fourier components and $M+2$ auxiliary qubits with $M = \lceil{\log_2{N}}\rceil$ for control operations. The desired output will be measured in the last qubit $q_N$ with a time complexity of the computation of $O(N^2\lceil \log_2N\rceil^2)$. We illustrate the approach by constructing the quantum circuit for the square wave function with accurate results obtained by direct simulations using the IBM-QASM simulator. The approach is general and can be applied to any arbitrary periodic function.

Doubly-symmetric periodic orbits in the spatial Hill's lunar problem with oblate secondary primary

Xingbo Xu

In this article we consider the existence of a family of doubly-symmetric periodic orbits in the spatial circular Hill's lunar problem, in which the secondary primary at the origin is oblate. The existence is shown by applying a fixed point theorem to the equations with periodical conditions expressed in Poincare-Delaunay elements for the double symmetries after eliminating the short periodic effects in the first-order perturbations of the approximated system.

Development in periodic series, method for resolving differential equations

Arpad Török, Stoian Petrescu, Michel Feidt

The development of functions of real variables in Taylor and Frobenius series (whole series which are formed in nonorthogonal, nonperiodic bases), in sinusoidal Fourier series (bases of orthogonal, periodic functions), in series of special functions (bases of orthogonal, nonperiodic functions), etc. is a commonly used method for solving a wide range of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs).In this article, based on an in-depth analysis of the properties of periodic sinusoidal Fourier series (SFS), we will be able to apply this procedure to a much broader category of ODEs (all linear, homogeneous and non-homogeneous equations with constant coefficients, a large category of linear and non-linear equations with variable coefficients, systems of ODEs, integro-differential equations, etc.). We will also extend this procedure and we use it to solve certain ODEs, on non-orthogonal periodic bases, represented by non sinusoidal periodic Fourier series (SFN).

On periodic boundary solutions for cylindrical and spherical KdV-Burgers equations

Alexey Samokhin

For the KdV-Burgers equations for cylindrical and spherical waves the development of a regular profile starting from an equilibrium under a periodic perturbation at the boundary is studied. The equation describes a medium which is both dissipative and dispersive. For an appropriate combination of dispersion and dissipation the asymptotic profile looks like a periodical chain of shock fronts with a decreasing amplitude (sawtooth waves). The development of such a profile is preceded by a head shock of a constant height and equal velocity which depends on spatial dimension as well as on integral characteristics of boundary condition; an explicit asymptotic for this head shock is found.

Scholarly journal publishing in transition: from restricted to open access

Bo-Christer Björk

While the business models used in most segments of the media industry have been profoundly changed by the Internet surprisingly little has been changed in the publishing of scholarly peer reviewed journals. Electronic delivery has become the norm, but the same publishers as before are dominating the market, selling content to subscribers. This article asks the question why Open Access (OA) to the output of mainly publicly funded research hasn't yet become the mainstream business model. OA implies a reversal of business logic from readers paying for content to authors paying fro dissemination via universa free access. The current situation is analyzed using Porter's five forces model. The analysis demonstrates a lack of competitive pressure in this industry, leading to so high profit levels of the leading publishers that they have yet to feel a strong need to change the way they operate.

Çocuk Yıldız Filmleri İle Canım Kardeşim Filminin Anlatı ve Karakter Özellikleri Bakımından Karşılaştırılması

Rifat Becerikli

Journalism and drones. Challenges and opportunities of the use of drones in news production

M.ª Ángeles Fernández Barrero, Universidad de Sevilla

With drone journalism it is possible to obtain aerial images in situations that are difficult to cover, with perspective, speed, mobility, greater safety for journalists, and at a lower cost. In this paper, an attempt is made to analyse the opportunities offered by the use of drones for news production in Spain, where an emerging industry has been detected. This is followed by a debate on the circumstances and causes behind their slow incorporation into newsroom routines, such as the cost of investing in a technology with a short lifetime due to its constant evolution and high accident rates, the technical and administrative complexity involved, the lack of specialized journalists, and restrictive laws which, until only recently, limited filming to rural areas.

Topic Modeling on Health Journals with Regularized Variational Inference

Robert Giaquinto, Arindam Banerjee

Topic modeling enables exploration and compact representation of a corpus. The CaringBridge (CB) dataset is a massive collection of journals written by patients and caregivers during a health crisis. Topic modeling on the CB dataset, however, is challenging due to the asynchronous nature of multiple authors writing about their health journeys. To overcome this challenge we introduce the Dynamic Author-Persona topic model (DAP), a probabilistic graphical model designed for temporal corpora with multiple authors. The novelty of the DAP model lies in its representation of authors by a persona --- where personas capture the propensity to write about certain topics over time. Further, we present a regularized variational inference algorithm, which we use to encourage the DAP model's personas to be distinct. Our results show significant improvements over competing topic models --- particularly after regularization, and highlight the DAP model's unique ability to capture common journeys shared by different authors.
