Spin Orientation Driven Polarization in Collinear Magnets

Yixun Zhang, Longju Yu, Yizhou Tong et al.

In a collinear magnet, the predominant magnetic moments are collectively aligned along a specific spatial orientation, and this alignment may yield intriguing phenomena such as spin orientation driven polarization. It is well known that spin orientation driven polarization is a relativistic effect that widely occurs in various type-II multiferroics. However, a universal theory that describes such a phenomenon and directs the corresponding materials discovery is lacking. Here, we revisit the magnetic structures of collinear magnets and explore the spin-orientation-dependent phenomena therein. Based on symmetry principles, we analyze the spin point groups (SPGs) that are associated with collinear magnets in the non-relativistic regime, demonstrate how relativistic spin-orbit interaction reduces each SPG to various magnetic point groups that are associated with different magnetic alignments, and classify the SPGs with respect to spin orientation driven polarization. We employ our theory to elucidate the mechanisms of spin orientation driven polarization in a variety of type-II multiferroics. Combined with first-principles simulations, we further show that polarization may be driven in nonpolar collinear antiferromagnets (e.g., CuFeS$_2$) by reorienting their magnetic alignments. Our theory provides guidelines for designing and discovering materials with spin orientation driven polarization, which will benefit the development of spintronics based on type-II multiferroics and related materials.

Oriented diameter of graphs with given domination number

Xiaolin Wang, Yaojun Chen

Let $G$ be a connected bridgeless graph with domination number $γ$. The oriented diameter (strong diameter) of $G$ is the smallest integer $d$ for which $G$ admits a strong orientation with diameter (strong diameter) $d$. Kurz and Lätsch (2012) conjectured the oriented diameter of $G$ is at most $\lceil \frac{7γ+1}{2}\rceil$ and the bound is sharp. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture by induction on $γ$ through contracting an unavoidable alternative subgraph, which holds potential for future applications. Moreover, we show the oriented strong diameter of $G$ is at most $7γ-1$ by using the same recursive structure, and the bound is best possible.

A characterization on $(g,f)$-parity orientations

Hongliang Lu, Xinxin Ma

Let $G$ be a graph and $g,f:V(G)\to2^N$ be two set functions such that $g(v)\le f(v)$ and $g(v)\equiv f(v)\pmod 2$ for every $v\in V(G)$. An orientation $O$ of $G$ is called a $(g,f)$-parity orientation if $g(v)\le d^+_O(v)\le f(v)$ and $g(v)\equiv d^+_O(v)\pmod 2$ for every $v\in V(G)$. In this paper, we give a Tutte-type characterization for a graph to have a $(g,f)$-parity orientation.

Comparative Analysis of Widely use Object-Oriented Languages

Muhammad Shoaib Farooq, Taymour zaman Khan

Programming is an integral part of computer science discipline. Every day the programming environment is not only rapidly growing but also changing and languages are constantly evolving. Learning of object-oriented paradigm is compulsory in every computer science major so the choice of language to teach object-oriented principles is very important. Due to large pool of object-oriented languages, it is difficult to choose which should be the first programming language in order to teach object-oriented principles. Many studies shown which should be the first language to tech object-oriented concepts but there is no method to compare and evaluate these languages. In this article we proposed a comprehensive framework to evaluate the widely used object-oriented languages. The languages are evaluated basis of their technical and environmental features.

On fundamental results for pushable homomorphisms of oriented graphs

Tapas Das, Pavan P D, Sagnik Sen et al.

This article deals with homomorphisms of oriented graphs with respect to push equivalence. Here homomorphisms refer to arc preserving vertex mappings, and push equivalence refers to the equivalence class of orientations of a graph $G$ those can be obtained from one another by reversing arcs of an edge cut. We study and prove some fundamental properties of pushable homomorphisms, and establish its connections to homomorphisms of signed graphs and graph coloring. To list a few highlights of this work: $\bullet$ We characterize orientations of a graph up to push equivalence and show that it is possible to decide whether they are equivalent or not in polynomial time. $\bullet$ We give a canonical definition of pushable homomorphism - this answers a natural open question. $\bullet$ We build a one-to-one correspondence between the equivalence classes of oriented and signed bipartite graphs. Thus, it is possible to translate a number of important results directly from the theory of signed graphs to oriented graphs. In particular, we show that pushable homomorphisms of bipartite graphs capture the entire theory of graph coloring as a subcase. $\bullet$ Given a graph $G$, we build a gadget oriented graph $\overrightarrow{G}^{(k)}$ which admits a pushable homomorphism to a directed odd cycle of length $(2k+1)$ if and only if $G$ admits a $(2k+1)$-coloring. We also show that it is NP-complete to determine whether an oriented (sparse) graph admits a pushable homomorphism to a directed odd cycle or not.

Mobilizing the (Im)Mobile Museum Through Hybrid Curation: A Story of Hybrid Curation of Cultural Practice During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Patoo Cusripituck, Jitjayang Yamabhai

This narrative research report summarizes the experiences of Vivid Ethnicity, a mobile anthropological museum of the Museum of Cultural Anthropology at Mahidol University, Thailand, during the lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2022. Although Vivid Ethnicity was rendered immobile and forced to stop travelling during the pandemic, it developed a hybrid curatorial method to stay connected and engaged with its audiences and research partners in two ethnic villages in Chiang Mai province. A key lesson of this experience is that hands-on information and communication technologies can help maintain a certain proximity with the audiences and research partners in times of physical absence. We also learned that an empathetic mindset on the part of everyone involved in the project, along with a human-centric design, are crucial components of what we call the hybrid curation of cultural practice.

Yaoi Media Consumption and Travel Motivation: Evidence From Filipino Viewers of Thai Boys’ Love Series

Jean Paolo Lacap

The Thai yaoi culture is getting a lot of attention in several parts of the world. Numerous Thai boy’s love (BL) series are a huge hit in Thailand and other countries. Despite the notable success of Thai yaoi and BL culture, there is less attention given to this topic in past studies and literature. Moreover, no study has investigated how yaoi culture may affect travel motivation. Hence, the present study examines the effect of yaoi media consumption on travel motivation of Filipino viewers of Thai boys’ love series. A prediction approach was employed, and partial least squares (PLS) path modelling was used to measure the hypothesized relationships. The study reveals that all dimensions of cultural proximity significantly affect Thai yaoi media consumption, and Thai yaoi media consumption was found to have an influence on emotional involvement and travel motivation. Emotional involvement was also found to significantly affect travel motivation, and, at the same time, act as a mediator between Thai yaoi media consumption and travel motivation. The current research offers novel theoretical insights about media consumption and its relation to travel motivation in the context of Thai pop-cultural boys’ love series.

Development of Greek Religious Iconography in Early Kushan Coinage: Adaptation, Integration and Transformation

Razieh Taasob

This paper addresses the process that led to the emergence of royal and religious imagery in Early Kushan coinage during the early 1st and 2nd century CE. The examination of the development of royal and religious motives, which is related to the Greco -Bactrian and Indo -Greeks, shows that they were integrated into the context of the oriental traditions of Bactria, while also engaging with Parthian, Indo -Parthian, and Indo- -Scythian coin designs. This phenomenon resulted in different numismatic practices that, though attempting to retain former traditions, crystallised in a range of novel features used to express its own identity. As far too little attention has been paid to this process of formation and transformation, this paper also aims to assess the scope of religious imagery, which was fundamentally connected with the Central Asian Iranian- -Hellenistic religious context. The main approach is to examine how political and social developments as well as the interaction between Early Kushan society and other Indo -Iranian dynasties affected coin images. My focus will be on the process ending in the formation of an independent iconography and the stabilisation of political and royal appellations on coinage.

Martin Heidegger and Kitayama Junyū

Eric S. Nelson

Heidegger’s early philosophical project was identified with a nihilistic philosophy of nothingness after the 1927 publication of Being and Time—with its depiction of the radical existential anxiety of being-towards-death—and his 1929 lecture “What is Metaphysics?”—with its analysis of the loss of all orientation and comportment in the face of an impersonal self-nihilating nothingness. Heidegger’s philosophy of nothingness would be contrasted in both Germany and Japan in the 1930s and 1940s with “Oriental nothingness” by authors such as Kitayama Junyū, a neglected Japanese philosopher active in Germany and an early interpreter of Heidegger and Nishida. In this contribution, I trace how Heidegger’s reflections on nothingness and emptiness (which are distinct yet intertwined expressions) become interculturally entangled with East Asian discourses in the early reception of his thought, particularly in Kitayama and the introduction of Nishida’s philosophy into Germany, and their significance in Heidegger’s “A Dialogue on Language”.

Decolonizing Darjeeling

Pema Gyalchen Tamang

Darjeeling has been largely represented as a place where fine tea grows and where the mighty Kanchenjunga graces its presence as an attraction for tourists. Much has been written about its colonial formation and its tea, but discursive formation of the area has been rather unfair for the inhabitants who are lost in this narrative of ‘leisure’. This injustice is all the more magnified when one perceives the identity crisis and the politics of belonging that the people of Darjeeling have been subjected to since the days of empire, continuing up to present times under the nation state. Against this misrepresentation Darjeeling, as lived by its inhabitants, needs to be reimagined. The politics of belonging is a recurrent theme across South Asia and the anxieties over belonging that the people face in Darjeeling has to do a lot with the kind of knowledge that has so far been produced about the region. This article will attempt to decolonize that knowledge and reimagine Darjeeling from an insider's perspective. This will be done through the iconic literary figure of Indra Bahadur Rai and his writing. In the present study I will be primarily looking at his only novel Aaja Ramita Cha (There is A Spectacle Today) (1964), and his essay Pahad ra Khola (Mountains and Rivers).

Representations of M. K. Atatürk in the Arabic Discourse and the Formation of the Collective Memory of the Arabs

Soumaya Louhichi

A review of the Arab publications on modern Turkey that have appeared since the 1970s and their examination with regard to the image of the founder of the Turkish republic, M. K. Atatürk (1881-1938), reveals a rather negative image and leads one to assume that this is the one and only image of Atatürk in Arab perception. The fact is, however, that it is by no means a static image of Atatürk. If the perceptions of Arab authors regarding Atatürk are embedded in the respective historical and political context, it becomes evident that these perceptions can be seen as the result of a process. Moreover, the content of the respective “perceptions” is obviously influenced by socio-political changes. My aim in this paper is to investigate the aspects of these perceptions as they appear in Arabic discourse. I would also like to highlight the various ways that they have been employed in the construction of the collective memory of the Arabs.

A note on 2-vertex-connected orientations

Florian Hörsch, Zoltán Szigeti

We consider two possible extensions of a theorem of Thomassen characterizing the graphs admitting a 2-vertex-connected orientation. First, we show that the problem of deciding whether a mixed graph has a 2-vertex-connected orientation is NP-hard. This answers a question of Bang-Jensen, Huang and Zhu. For the second part, we call a directed graph $D=(V,A)$ $2T$-connected for some $T \subseteq V$ if $D$ is 2-arc-connected and $D-v$ is strongly connected for all $v \in T$. We deduce a characterization of the graphs admitting a $2T$-connected orientation from the theorem of Thomassen.

Independent Hyperplanes in Oriented Paving Matroids

Lamar Chidiac, Winfried Hochstättler

In 1993, Csima and Sawyer proved that in a non-pencil arrangement of n pseudolines, there are at least $\frac{6}{13}n$ simple points of intersection. Since pseudoline arrangements are the topological representations of reorientation classes of oriented matroids of rank $3$, in this paper, we will use this result to prove by induction that an oriented paving matroid of rank $r \ge 3$ on $n$ elements, where $n \geq 5+ r$, has at least $\frac{12}{13(r-1)} \binom{n}{r-2}$ independent hyperplanes, yielding a new necessary condition for a paving matroid to be orientable.

Orientals as free weak $ω$-categories

Yuki Maehara

The orientals are the free strict $ω$-categories on the simplices introduced by Street. The aim of this paper is to show that they are also the free weak $ω$-categories on the same generating data. More precisely, we exhibit the Street nerves of the orientals as fibrant replacements of the simplices in Verity's model structure for complicial sets.

A Satirical Magazine in Its Own Way”: Politicisation and Dissent in Gırgır (1972-1983)

Valentina Marcella

The satirical weekly Gırgır, founded by Oğuz Aral in 1972, has been Turkey’s best-selling satirical magazine of all times. Characterized by a multitude of genres and styles, its contents ranged from written jokes to comics and political cartoons. Such diversity has prompted scholars to present this magazine in different, often contrasting ways, especially with reference to the nature and strength of its satire. This study intends to contribute to solving the ambiguity concerning whether Gırgır’s caricatures and cartoons may be deemed political or not. For this purpose, it focuses on its satirical repertoire from its early days up to the end of the military regime of 1980 to 1983, the most challenging time in terms of freedom of expression and dissent. This article argues that satire in Gırgır became increasingly political parallel to the growing politicisation of society in the 1970s and that the magazine did not bow to political pressure under the military rule. Especially its reactions to the repressive climate of the regime allow us to define its satire as political.
