Expression

P. Ekman

Expression is a term that has been applied to music in an extraordinarily wide range of senses; philosophers and musicologists alike remain sharply divided on what musical expression is and how it works. This essay gives a historical account of the ways in which music in and of itself—that is, music independent of words—has been regarded as expressive over the past three hundred years by surveying influences spanning Enlightenment theories of rhetoric and the imitation of emotions, Romantic aesthetics of subjectivity and self-expression, and more contemporary versions of contour, arousal, persona, and intransitive theories of expression. This review reveals the lack of a single satisfactory explanatory framework for musical expression, even while confirming musical expression’s enduring importance as “the soul of music.”

The Transformation of Islamic Discourse in Turkish Novels: Social Change, Identity, and Narrative Aesthetics

Nesrin Mengi

Through the process of modernization, Turkish literature transcends aesthetics to reflect sociological and cultural changes. The tensions between the individual and society, tradition and modernity, and religion that emerged with Westernization are particularly reflected in the novel. Religious discourse takes different forms at each historical threshold during the modernization process. During the Tanzimat, Servet-i Fünûn, Milli Edebiyat and Socialist Realist periods, it served as a defensive or critical reference point in the face of debates on modernization and Westernization. With the secular policies of the Republic, its public function transformed, evolving into an arena for cultural and moral debate, and it increased its visibility within the multiparty political structure after 1950. From the 1980s onwards, Islamic discourse became an artistic and ideological force in both the social and literary spheres. This article examines the stages of Islamic discourse in Turkish novels within a historical framework, arguing that religious representations are not merely elements reflecting social change, but also play an active role in the reconstruction of identity formation and narrative aesthetics. The study analyzes the functions of religious elements using a text-centered approach. The findings show that religion is not merely a theme in literary texts, but a living element that transforms alongside society, influences identity formation, and shapes narrative aesthetics.

FDM Process Parameters Impact on Roughness and Dimensional Accuracy of PLA Parts

Niama Arreda, Hamza Isksioui, Haitam Boutahri et al.

Interest in research on FDM systems using inexpensive materials like PLA and ABS is constantly increasing. In this regard, the scope of this study is narrowed to exclusively focus on PLA. To improve the surface finish of PLA printed products, it is important to have optimal values of the most important process parameters, notably layer height, temperature, and printing speed. The surface roughness is a critical aspect of additive manufacturing that directly impacts the functionality, aesthetics, and overall performance of printed parts. To accomplish the improvement of surface quality, the statistical method ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) is used to analyze data and identify the most relevant process parameters that impact roughness and dimensional precision. The response variables are identified during this study in order to define the optimal printing parameters for improving part quality and ensuring the best surface finishes. Additionally, the dimensional accuracy of the parts is analyzed in order to check the reliability and effectiveness of the optimum parameters. The results are validated through this additional assessment, which also provides insight into the capabilities and limitations of inexpensive FDM machines when the optimized parameters are used. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the significance of enhancing parameters to improve the performance of 3D printed components, providing insightful information about the potential of PLA as an inexpensive material for applications that need both high surface quality and precise dimensional control. According to the analysis, the thickness of the layers and printing speed have a significant role in the roughness for a better desired surface quality.

Ethnic Populism and Bad Taste: Exploring the Kitschification of Slovak Folklore

Jana Migašová

This study is a_compilation of notes on the concept of folkloric kitsch, understood as a_secondary aesthetic product of modernism that specifically participates in shared feelings of national pride in Central European countries. The aesthetic core of folkloric kitsch production involves the decontextualised and redundant use of elements borrowed from original folk art, aiming to communicate originality, authenticity, and national self-sufficiency. In Slovakia, the kitsch mode of presenting folklore is often used not only in the tourism sector but also to promote ideas charged with nationalism, particularly as part of populist political communication. Against the backdrop of reconstructing European and Slovak thought and writing on the relationship between kitsch and politics, this article attempts to reconstruct and explain folkloric kitsch in the realm of painting as a_specific aesthetic vehicle for the powerful ethnic populism.

On the Eastern style of thinking in A. Bely’s theory of symbolism

Haiying Guan, Xiaodong Pan

RELEVANCE. The study is devoted to understanding and identifying the significance of the eastern style of philosophy and aesthetics of Taoism in the work of the prominent representative of Russian symbolism Andrey Bely (Boris Nikolaevich Bugaev), who determined the development of the literary process (modernist and post-modernist movements) and art of the first third of the 20th century and influenced the further development Russian literature. The purpose of the study is to show the conceptual content of the aesthetic thought of the Russian philosopher and symbolist poet through the prism of Taoism and to clarify the presence of Eastern traditional wisdom (“Tao Te Ching”) in the construction of A. Bely’s theory of symbolism.MATERIALS AND METHODS. The research material was the collected works of A. Bely. The translation of the book “Tao Te Ching” written by the great Chinese thinker Lao Tzu, presented for the first time for the Russian-speaking reader, was used.” When solving research problems, a description method with the interpretive function of language was used, that is, a method of studying the interpretation of knowledge about the world. In our case, the interpretation of Taoism is focused on the interpretive activity of an individual creative personality, which always presupposes the subjective selectivity of the word.RESULT AND DISCUSSION. An analysis of the work of A. Bely showed that in reflecting the problems of the symbol, the philosophical principles of symbolism, in addition to two sources, they participate: on the one hand, the ideas of the Slavophiles, arising from the philosophy of V. Solovyov, on the other hand, the system of Western philosophy (the ideas  of A. Schopenhauer and F. Nietzsche), a reflection of the creative borrowing of Eastern wisdom, ideas and functions of Chinese literature. The originality of the imaginative thinking of the Russian symbolist poet, who, in accordance with his spiritual nature, followed his bright creative path, is reflected in the development of the artistic method – symbolism.CONCLUSION. The idea of A. Bely’s symbolism is based on the compatibility of the concepts of various thinkers, including philosophizing in the Taoist style. A. Bely created a unified symbolic picture of the world - the unification of artistic, aesthetic, religious, mystical and everyday ideas and knowledge about the world into one whole. The connecting sign of this unification is the Symbol, which has a pronounced authorial character, has an infinity of boundaries of value, and not a semantic individual interpretation of the word and broadcasts the manifestation of systemic pluralism, revealing the essence of the world and being.

Risk Assessment of Fire Hazards in Semarang City Residential Areas

Raditya Hari Murti, Hendra Adi Wijaya, Indira Laksmi Widuri et al.

Based on data from the Semarang City Fire Department in 2013-2016, 1028 fire incidents took place in Semarang City. This incidence reached its highest in 2015 with 399 cases of fire which caused material losses of up to IDR 398.3 billion. Based on these figures, Semarang City possesses the highest incidence rate of fire cases in Central Java Province. However, studies on the risk and mitigation of fire hazard disasters in Semarang City still need to be carried out. This study aims to identify fire risks, to mitigate the disaster’s hazards in Semarang City, and to provide recommendations for arranging relevant buildings and the environment. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method, in which interviews are conducted with key persons, with the utilization of GIS analysis to assess the risk of fire. The results of this study exhibit that in Semarang City, 14 villages have a high level of fire hazard risk, one of which is Rejosari Village which has the highest level of fire risk. This occurred mainly because historically, there have been many fire incidents in this area and even claiming several lives. The density of buildings and the difficulty of access further increase vulnerability in the case of fire. Nevertheless, the inhabitants still lack an understanding of this hazard. Accordingly, the fundamental mitigation to be carried out in Rejosari Village is to increase community comprehension and to consider the addition of fire protection and safety facilities, including hydrants, in densely populated buildings and areas, in order to reduce the risk of fire hazards.

Poetics of hypertimbralism in music

Livia Teodorescu-Ciocanea

My presentation is an attempt to introduce and clarify an original concept which I called Hypertimbralism, that refers to music based on Hypertimbre as the foundation for musical composition. It points to either orchestral, chamber or solo instruments music which relies on unusual timbre involving polyspectral energy. In contemporary music, two factors led to the arousal of Timbre-based aesthetics: sound mass (very dense textures) and extended instrumental techniques. Hypertimbralism embraces already written music and at the same time opens imagination for new insights in this matter. A poetics of hypertimbralism would provide a musicological background for composition based on an enhanced vocabulary of timbre and on a higher understanding of timbre perception.

Hyaluronic Acid Is an Effective Dermal Filler for Lip Augmentation: A Meta-Analysis

László Márk Czumbel, Sándor Farkasdi, Noémi Gede et al.

Introduction: The lips and the mouth play an indispensable role in vocalization, mastication and face aesthetics. Various noxious factors may alter and destruct the original structure, and appearance of the lips and the anatomical area surrounding the mouth. The application of hyaluronic acid (HA) may serve as a safe method for lip regeneration. Although a number of studies exist for HA effectiveness and safety, its beneficial effect is not well-established.Aim: The present meta-analysis and systematic review was performed to investigate the effectiveness of HA on lip augmentation. We also investigated the types and nature of adverse effects (AEs) of HA application. Methods: We reported our meta-analysis in accordance with the PRISMA Statement. PROSPERO protocol registration: CRD42018102899. We performed the systematic literature search in CENTRAL, Embase, and MEDLINE. Randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, case series and case reports were included. The untransformed proportion (random-effects, DerSimonian-Laird method) of responder rate to HA injection was calculated. For treatment related AEs descriptive statistics were used. Results: The systematic literature search yielded 32 eligible records for descriptive statistics and 10 records for quantitative synthesis. The results indicated that the overall estimate of responders (percentage of subjects with increased lip fullness by one point or higher) was 91% (ES = 0.91, 95% CI:0.85−0.96) 2 months after injection. The rate of responders was 74% (ES = 0.74, 95% CI:0.66−0.82) and 46% (ES = 0.46, 95% CI:0.28−0.65) after 6 and 12 months, respectively. We included 1,496 participants for estimating the event rates of AEs. The most frequent treatment-related AEs were tenderness (88.8%), injection site swelling (74.3%) and bruising (39.5%). Rare AEs included foreign body granulomas (0.6%), herpes labialis (0.6%) and angioedema (0.3%).Conclusion: Our meta-analysis revealed that lip augmentation with injectable HA is an efficient method for increasing lip fullness for at least up to 6 months after augmentation. Moreover, we found that most AEs of HA treatment were mild or moderate, but a small number of serious adverse effects were also found. In conclusion, further well-designed RCTs are still needed to make the presently available evidence stronger.

Empirical Explorations of Guitar Players’ Attitudes Towards Their Equipment and the Role of Distortion in Rock Music

Jan-Peter Herbst

This article has its source in a larger research project on distorted guitar playing in rock music which focuses on distortion’s effect on playability and expressiveness, its psychological influences on chord perception, composition, and production, and on issues regarding genre aesthetics. While most work on rock music and guitar cultures has either studied recorded and transcribed music or the star’s personality, behavior, and medial staging, this empirical study mainly focuses on amateur and semi-professional musicians, but it also evaluates statements of professional guitarists of various prominence. It explores guitar players’ views and attitudes as well as their preferred equipment, based on the theoretically grounded assumption that musicians’ use of equipment is strongly connected with genre conventions.

2D and 3D Image Quality Assessment: A Survey of Metrics and Challenges

Yuzhen Niu, Yini Zhong, Wenzhong Guo et al.

Image quality is important not only for the viewing experience, but also for the performance of image processing algorithms. Image quality assessment (IQA) has been a topic of intense research in the fields of image processing and computer vision. In this paper, we first analyze the factors that affect two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) image quality, and then provide an up-to-date overview on IQA for each main factor. The main factors that affect 2D image quality are fidelity and aesthetics. Another main factor that affects stereoscopic 3D image quality is visual comfort. We also describe the IQA databases and give the experimental results on representative IQA metrics. Finally, we discuss the challenges for IQA, including the influence of different factors on each other, the performance of IQA metrics in real applications, and the combination of quality assessment, restoration, and enhancement.

Polyvalence of the Cave Paradigm: Iris Murdoch’s Reception

Aliona Matiychak

The article analyzes the literary and philosophical aspects of the Cave paradigm both in the context of Iris Murdoch’s fiction and her philosophical essays. The purpose of the article is to study the specifics of the Cave paradigm embodiment in the genrelogic structure of Murdoch’s philosophical novel. The multiple-aspect approach to the issue is proposed. In addition to the gnoseologic and gender aspects much attention is paid to the ethic-aesthetic structure component of Murdoch’s literary texts. Investigation of this paradigm in such view makes it possible to realize the resources of the author's style, emphasizing the connection between the author's ethics and the aesthetics of her fiction. In this case the proto-text is the famous Plato's myth about the Cave and the meta-text to reveal Murdoch's reception of this myth and interpretations in her novels are her own writings: “The Sovereignty of Good over other Concepts”, “The Fire and the Sun: Why Plato Banished the Artists”, “Concepts of Unity. Art”. As for cognition, likewise Plato, Murdoch regards the idea of Good has a limit, and it is vaguely recognizable, but having recognized it, we come to the conclusion that it is precisely the cause of all that is the true and beautiful. Developing the metaphor of the sun, as the understanding of the Good, Murdoch finds it extremely rich. Unlike her theoretical and philosophical writings, in her novels Murdoch ironically plays with the Plato's myth. She considers the Cave as a “magic space”, “theatre space”, “sacred space”, “place of initiation” or a “place of illusions”. The author's interpretation of the Cave paradigm is unique, worthy of a true philosopher. It is revealed by means of the material (topos) and spiritual (logos) factors correlation.Overall, this is no longer a real topos, but the consciousness of her characters as such, with all its mazes, shadows, dark corners, unconscious queer illusions.

Percezione

Maurizio Ferraris

The essay concerns the notion of realism and its relationship with the notion of perception. The ontological meaning of aesthetics as aisthesis is in fact in the non-amendable nature of perception. From this non-amendability the essay outlines four traces through which aisthesis leads to realism: “nonconceptual content”, “object”, “naivety”, “ontology”.

Aesthetics of death

Jaime Ginzburg

This essay is based on Michel Schneider`s and Sandra M. Gilbert`s studies on death. We consider death as a constant presence in Brazilian culture. If this is considered as an historical process, it is possible to evaluate some textual elements as a basis to an aesthetics, related to many writers and artists. Within these elements, we evaluate the structure of time, the point of view and the epistemological basis of the texts. Limite branco, Inventário do ir-remediável and O ovo apunhalado, first books written by Caio Fernando Abreu, are strongly related to this aesthetics.
