Ecological status of Voronezh reservoir (review of scientific publications)

The article presents the broad overview of scientific publishing related to ecological problems of Voronezh reservoir. Issues connected with chemical, microbiological, biotic and other problems of this reservoir that impact the Voronezh population well-being were discussed in many monographs, articles, and reports at scientific conferences. Also, there are many scientific publications, reports, monographs and dissertations that were dedicated to health and well-being of population of Voronezh city. However, this comprehensive information still lacks integrated approach to solution of the whole range of problems related to the Voronezh reservoir eco/geo/system components.

Mechanical Properties and Microscopic Mechanisms of Expansive Soil under the Action of Acid and Alkali Solutions

[Objective] The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of acid-base conditions on the mechanical properties of expansive soil. [Methods] Expansive soil from Section C003 of the Yangtze-to-Huaihe Water Diversion Project was taken as the research object. A self-developed leaching test device was employed to leach expansive soil samples with acid-base solutions of varying pH values. After leaching, the relationship between strength changes of expansive soil and pH values of solutions was investigated using critical water content tests and consolidated drained triaxial shear tests. Chemical composition analysis and X-ray diffraction tests were conducted to investigate the underlying mechanism driving the variations in physical and mechanical properties. [Results] (1) After 7-day leaching with acid and alkali solutions, the samples showed different changes in morphology and form. Specifically, during acidic solution leaching, microbubbles formed on the sample surface, which developed into numerous pores after 7 days of leaching. In contrast, during alkaline solution leaching, no significant surface changes were observed initially, but after 7 days of leaching, the samples exhibited volume expansion and white crystals formed on the surface. (2) Critical water content and triaxial compression tests revealed that after 7 days of acidic solution leaching, the physical and mechanical properties of expansive soil blocks progressively deteriorated with decreasing pH values (compared to samples leached with pH=7 solution). Specifically, as pH values decreased, the liquid limit, plastic limit, and plasticity index decreased, the cohesion showed a significant decrease, and the internal friction angle showed a minor decrease. After 7 days of alkaline solution leaching, the physical and mechanical properties of expansive soil blocks gradually strengthened with increasing pH values (compared to samples leached with pH=7 solution). Specifically, as pH values increased, the liquid limit, plastic limit, and plasticity index increased, the cohesion showed a significant increase, and the internal friction angle showed a slight increase. (3) XRD tests and chemical composition analysis of expansive soil blocks after acid and alkali solution leaching revealed that the interaction mechanisms between the acid and alkali solutions and the soil primarily involved ion exchange and reactions between soil minerals and solutions. These processes modified the double-layer thickness between soil particles and the content of free oxide cements and water-soluble salts, thereby changing the interparticle contact patterns and soil microstructure. After acidic solution treatment, the diffuse double-layer became thinner, the cements were dissolved, and the soil structure deteriorated, leading to progressively deteriorating physical and mechanical properties with decreasing pH. After alkaline solution treatment, the diffuse double-layer became thicker, accompanied by the formation of new cements that filled pores of various sizes inside the soil, making the soil structure more compact, leading to systematically enhanced physical and mechanical properties with increasing pH.

Sedimentary bed morphology in the wake of flexible aquatic vegetation

The sedimentary bed morphology modulated by the wake flow of a wall-mounted flexible aquatic vegetation blade across various structural aspect ratios (AR = l/b, where l and b are the length and width of the blade, respectively) and incoming flow velocities was experimentally investigated in a water channel. A surface scanner was implemented to quantify bed topography, and a tomographic particle image velocimetry system was used to characterize the three-dimensional wake flows. The results showed that due to the deflection of incoming flow, the velocity magnitude increased at the lateral sides of the blade, thereby producing distinctive symmetric scour holes in these regions. The normalized morphology profiles of the sedimentary bed, which were extracted along the streamwise direction at the location of the maximum erosion depth, exhibited a self-similar pattern that closely followed a sinusoidal wave profile. The level of velocity magnitude enhancement was highly correlated to the postures of the flexible blade. At a given flow velocity, the blade with lower aspect ratios exhibited less significant deformation, causing more significant near-bed velocity enhancement in the wake deflection zone and therefore leading to higher erosion volumes. Further investigation indicated that when the blade underwent slight deformation, the larger velocity enhancement close to the bed can be attributed to more significant flow deflection effects at the lateral sides of the blade and stronger flow mixing with high momentum flows away from the bed. Supported with measurements, a basic formula was established to quantify the shear stress acting on the sedimentary bed as a function of incoming flow velocity and blade aspect ratio.

Construction and application of urban water resources spatial equilibrium model: A case study of Ulanqab City

Evaluating the water resources spatial equilibrium (WRSE) is the foundation for scientifically planning the construction of an optimized water resource allocation system and achieving the high-standard development of the China Water Network Project. To elucidate the characteristics of WRSE variation in Ulanqab City, this study explored a novel WRSE assessment model based on connection number and the subtraction set pair potential method. The results indicate that: (1) there exists a mismatch between the distribution of water resources in Ulanqab City and its socio-economic development. In 2020, the Gini coefficients of water resources total quantity concerning resident population, gross domestic product (GDP), industrial output value, and irrigated land area were 0.48, 0.48, 0.51, and 0.28, respectively. (2) From 2011 to 2020, the overall WRSE level in Ulanqab City showed an increasing trend year by year. Among them, the WRSE levels in six counties improved, while Jining District consistently remained at a low equilibrium state due to the prominent contradiction between water supply and demand. (3) In the future, Ulanqab City can further enhance the WRSE level by promoting the reuse of recycled water, intensifying groundwater pollution control, and implementing a quota management system for agricultural water use. HIGHLIGHTS The distribution of water resources in Ulanqab City is in a state of mismatch with social and economic development.; From 2011 to 2020, the water resources spatial equilibrium levels of six counties in Ulanqab City improved, while there was no significant change in five counties.; The vulnerability indicators of Ulanqab City are per capita water resources and ecological environment water demand load.;

Assessment of the water level of the transboundary Lake Khanka resulted from implementation of the design solutions on cleaning of the Sungacha riverbed from sediments

Th e transboundary Russian-Chinese Lake Khanka is characterized by a complex and poorly predictable hydrological regime with long-term cyclic fl uctuations of the level. Th e last rise of the level, which began after 2000 year, turned out to be anomalous in the entire history of observations and caused severe fl ooding of the coastal territories of the Russian part of the basin with related intensifi cation of erosion processes, impact on ecosystems, etc. Th e main factors aff ecting the hydrological regime of the lake are climatic changes in the region and anthropogenic impact on the water resources observed in the Khanka Lake catchment area because of the development of irrigated agriculture, especially in the Chinese part of the basin. Th e reduction in the capacity of the Sungacha River due to the deposition of sediment in the source of the riverbed make current state of the lake’s water regime worse.

Variation Diagnosis of Maximum Precipitation in Jiangxi Province in 60 Years

Hourly precipitation data of 91 meteorological stations in Jiangxi Province during 1954—2012 were selected to analyze the variation of maximum precipitation in consecutive 1 h,3 h,6 h,12 h and 24 h using hydrologic variation diagnostic system (HDMS) .Firstly,in the detailed diagnosis,linear trend,Kendall and Spearman methods were used for trend test,and M-K,cumulative anomaly,ordered clustering,sliding F,sliding rank sum and other test methods were adopted for jump diagnosis.Secondly,the efficiency coefficient R<sup>2</sup> was employed to determine the final diagnosis results and conduct the spatio-temporal analysis.Finally,the spatial characteristics of the occurrence frequency of maximum precipitation greater than or equal to 16 mm,30 mm and 50 mm were analyzed.The results show the followings:① The spatial distribution characteristics of maximum precipitation in Max1 h,Max3 h,Max6 h,Max12 h and Max24 h were similar in Jiangxi Province.With the increase in duration,most stations with variations witnessed a jumping increase.Those with significant variations were more in the northern plain than in the southern mountain area,namely that the spatial distribution was dense in the north and sparse in the south.② The degree of precipitation series variation was positively and negatively correlated with elevation in the southern mountain area and the northern plain area,respectively.Studies have shown that atmospheric circulation indexes AO (Arctic oscillation),NAO (North Atlantic oscillation) and PNA (Pacific-North American oscillation) had negative,positive and negative correlations with precipitation at stations in the study area,respectively.Therefore,the atmospheric circulation indexes have correlations with the change of precipitation series in Jiangxi Province,which are one of the causes of the maximum precipitation variation in the period.③ The frequency of regional rainstorms gradually decreased with the increase in duration,and rainstorm events in the northern plain area were less than those in other mountain areas due to the influence of topographic factors.Through the analysis of hourly precipitation data of many years in Jiangxi Province,this paper is expected to provide some reference for short-term rainstorm forecast and flood warning.

Projections of climate change in streamflow and affluent natural energy in the Brazilian hydroelectric sector of CORDEX models

ABSTRACT Long-term water and energy planning makes it possible to reduce social and economic impacts by avoiding episodes of interruption in water and electricity supply, essential services for several sectors. Thus, the analyses proposed by this study aimed at identifying the impact of climate change on naturalised streamflows and Affluent Natural Energy (NEA) projections for the Brazilian electricity sector using six models of the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) project, based on the RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios for the 21st century. The streamflows for the 24 stations representing the National Interconnected System (NIS) were estimated through the concentrated hydrological model SMAP (Soil Moisture Accounting Procedure), while the streamflows for the other stations that comprise the NIS were obtained by linear regression. The streamflows, as well as the productivity of the reservoirs, were used to calculate the NEA. The results showed that most of the models project possible reductions in annual naturalized streamflows and NEA for the three periods analyzed and for the North, Northeast and Southeast/Midwest sectors. Meanwhile, in the Southern sector, for the period 2010-2039, most of the models indicated an increase in the annual naturalized streamflows and NEA.

A conceptual model for polyacrylamid (PAM) degradation in nitrogen compounds

This study aimed to evaluate the impacts generated by polymer Polyacrylamide (PAM), found in wastewater treatment plant. The degradation of MAP can be associated with the presence of nitrogenous compounds in water, such as ammonium, nitrates and nitrites, and it is essential to evaluate the degradation of this polymer. The methodology involves the proposal of a Conceptual Model for the disposal of ETA sludge in technogenic landfills, with a focus on polyacrylamides and their degradation in nitrogen compounds. The model was validated from data observed in a case study of ETA sludge from Taiaçupeba, Suzano, SP. It was observed that the nitrification process, by aerobic route, the ammonium ion is oxidized to nitrites and later to nitrates; and anaerobically, an anamox reaction, in which ammonia is oxidized and nitrite reduced, releasing nitrogen gas in a reducing environment. In addition, ammonium ion, manganese oxide and iron hydroxide (abundant in the soil in situ and also in the sludge) were observed, being oxidized to gaseous nitrogen and consuming H + ions in the medium. The variation of the water level of the water table can influence the concentrations observed due to the increase in the thickness of the saturated zone, allowing the contact with superficial layers of MAP.

Study of the flow around cofferdams constructed in running water through computational model

ABSTRACT River closure to provide a dry area for the construction of the works in the river bed must be carefully performed because a failure can lead to serious and costly delays. By means of a computational approach, using the FLOW 3D® software, this paper studies the hydraulic behavior of the flow around a cofferdam constructed in running water. The computational model was validated using results of an experimental investigation. Then the effect of changing the cofferdam configuration on the flow characteristics in this region was analyzed. This study showed that the computational model adequately reproduces this type of flow and that changing the configuration of the cofferdam: increasing the width of the crest or decreasing the embankment slope affects the flow curvature and positively affects the river closure process.
