Comparative Effects of SMR Rolling and Dynamic Stretching on Forward Flexion and Jump Height in U14–U15 Football Players

Mónika Szigethy, Enikő Hurtik-Tóth

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of SMR (self-myofascial release) rolling and dynamic stretching on lower limb flexibility and vertical jump height among U14–U15 football players. Two youth teams from Király SE participated in the research (U14: n=17; U15: n=19). The athletes followed three different warm-up protocols: SMR only, dynamic stretching only, and a combination of both. Performance indicators were measured by using the Finger Floor Test and the Vertical Jump Test, both before and after the warm-up. Non-parametric statistical analysis (Wilcoxon and Kruskal–Wallis tests) revealed a significant improvement in the forward flexion test in both age groups: in the U14 group the first measurement was 16.96 ± 10.45 cm and the second measurement was 15.21 ± 9.77 cm (p < 0.001), while in the U15 group the first measurement was 11.92 ± 11.06 cm and the second measurement was 10.52 ± 10.06 cm (p < 0.001). No statistically significant change was observed in jump height. The study confirmed that even a short warm-up intervention can improve flexibility, but using SMR or dynamic stretching alone is not sufficient for performance enhancement.

Understanding the gaming disorder–depression co-occurrence: A narrative literature review

An-Pyng Sun, Stephanie Diez

Because gaming disorder (GD) often co-occurs with depression, understanding how both disorders work together enables clinicians to better treat individuals with GD–depression comorbidity. The extant literature on GD–depression comorbidity is unsystematic and contradictory, with some studies suggesting depression predicts GD but not vice versa, some claiming GD predicts depression but not vice versa, and some proposing a bidirectional relationship between the two. The goal of this narrative review is to explore and organize these findings to establish a holistic and coherent conceptual framework that explains how GD co-occurs with depression. The PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Sciences databases were searched for relevant peer-reviewed journal articles published 2013–2025, using the search terms (gaming disorder OR gaming addiction) AND (depression OR depressive symptoms). Results included 127 empirical studies that meet the inclusion criteria and are relevant to building a coherent map to explain the GD–depression relationship. The resulting framework combines their findings to map paths and mechanisms, as well as salient contextual factors, explaining how GD and depression may be connected. Specifically, the self-medication perspective indicates that psychiatric disorders, adverse life experiences, and other factors may predict GD via the mediation of depression. By comparison, the negative consequences perspective suggests that GD may lead to negative consequences (e.g., withdrawal, unhealthy lifestyles, and compromised self-esteem), which subsequently foster depression. Together, these two paths form a chronic vicious cycle.

Mediating effect of adaptive coping between perceived social support and treatment motivation among mental health clients during the Covid-19 pandemic

Joey Malaya A. Engay, Aimee Rose Arguelles-Manda

Background: The repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted mental health around the world, notably among Filipinos. This global crisis prompted the evaluation of known protective elements that help safeguard mental health. This study analyzed the relationship between perceived social support and treatment motivation as mediated by adaptive coping. Methods: The participants were selected based on specific criteria and suitability for the study. Data collection utilized online forms of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Brief COPE, and Client Motivation for Therapy Scale. The reliability and validity of the measurements were confirmed for the chosen population. Mean scores were calculated for perceived social support, treatment motivation, and adaptive coping. The correlation between perceived social support and treatment motivation was examined. Mediation analysis, employing WarpPLS, was conducted to analyze the significance of direct, indirect, and total effects among the three variables in the mediation model. Results: The result showed a significant positive correlation between perceived social support and treatment motivation (rs=0.290, p<0.01). Moreover, adaptive coping is a significant mediator between perceived social support and treatment motivation with a small effect size (β=0.213, p<0.001, f2=0.087). The main perceived social support of the respondents is from their significant other (M = 5.03), while their treatment motivation is identified regulation (M = 6.05), and their preferred adaptive coping is positive reframing (M = 5.82). Limitation: Participants are 85 ongoing mental health clients diagnosed with depression and anxiety aged 18 to 39 years old at Quirino Memorial Medical Center during the COVID-19 pandemic. The generalizability of results is limited. Conclusion: Adaptive coping significantly mediates the relationship between perceived social support and treatment motivation among mental health clients.

Induced membrane technique versus one-stage autografting in management of atrophic nonunion of long bone in the lower limb: clinical and health burden outcomes

Hu Zhang, Jingshu Fu, Shen Jie et al.

Abstract Objective In this study, we aimed to compare the outcomes of the two-stage induced membrane technique (IMT) and one-stage autografting in the treatment of aseptic atrophic nonunion in lower limb long bones. Methods From January 2014 to January 2022, we reviewed all surgically treated long bone nonunion patients, including patients aged 18 years or older with atrophic nonunion, who were either treated with the two-stage induced membrane technique (IMT) or one-stage autografting. Outcome parameters interns of clinical, quality of life and healthcare burden were recorded and retrospectively analysed between the two treatment populations. The follow-up time was at least 1 year. Results In total, 103 patients who met the criteria for aseptic atrophic nonunion were enrolled. Among them, 41 (39.8%) patients were treated with two-stage IMT, and 62 (60.2%) patients were treated with one-stage autologous bone grafting. The follow-up time was 12 to 68 months, with an average of 28.4 months. The bone healing rate was comparable in both groups (IMT: 92.7% vs. one-stage grafting: 91.9%, P = 0.089) at 12 months post-operation, and the bone healing Lane–Sandhu score was superior in the IMT group (mean: 8.68 vs. 7.81, P = 0.002). Meanwhile, the SF-12 scores of subjective physical component score (PCS) (mean: 21.36 vs. 49.64, P < 0.01) and mental health component score (MCS) (mean: 24.85 vs. 46.14, P < 0.01) significantly increased in the IMT group, as well as in the one-stage grafting group, and no statistically significant difference was found within groups. However, the total hospital stays (median: 8 days vs. 14 days, P < 0.01) and direct medical healthcare costs (median: ¥30,432 vs. ¥56,327, P < 0.05) were greater in the IMT group, while the complications (nonunion 8, infection 3, material failure 2, and donor site pain 6) were not significantly different between the two groups (17.1% vs. 19.4, P = 0.770). Conclusion The data indicate that two-stage method of IMT serves as an alternative method in treating atrophic nonunion; however, it may not be a preferred option, in comprehensive considering patient clinical outcomes and healthcare burden. More evidence-based research is needed to further guide clinical decision-making.

A többség kis összegekben játszik. Ebből a szempontból legkedveltebb sportágak a labdarúgás, kézilabda, darts, tenisz.

Anggitya Riandini, Ilham Nur Alfian

The TPOCS-self-reported Therapist Intervention Fidelity for Youth (TPOCS-SeRTIFY): A case study of pragmatic measure development

Emily M Becker-Haimes, Melanie R Klein, Bryce D McLeod et al.

Background: Developing pragmatic assessment tools to measure clinician use of evidence-based practices is critical to advancing implementation of evidence-based practices in mental health. This case study details our community-partnered process of developing the Therapy Process Observation Coding Scale-Self-Reported Therapist Intervention Fidelity for Youth (TPOCS-SeRTIFY), a pragmatic, clinician-report instrument to measure cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) delivery. Approach: We describe a five-step community-partnered development process. Initial goals were to create a self-report instrument that paralleled an existing direct observation measure of clinician delivery of CBT use to facilitate later assessment of measure performance. Cognitive interviews with community clinicians ( n  = 6) and consultation with CBT experts ( n  = 6) were used to enhance interpretability and usability as part of an iterative refinement process. The instrument was administered to 247 community clinicians along with an established self-reported measure of clinician delivery of CBT and other treatments to assess preliminary psychometric performance. Preliminary psychometrics were promising. Conclusion: Our community-partnered development process showed promising success and can guide future development of pragmatic implementation measures both to facilitate measurement of ongoing implementation efforts and future research aimed at building learning mental health systems. Plain language summary Developing brief, user-friendly, and accurate tools to measure how therapists deliver cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in routine practice is important for advancing the reach of CBT into community settings. To date, developing such “pragmatic” measures has been difficult. There is little known about how researchers can best develop these types of assessment tools so that they (1) are easy for clinicians in practice to use and (2) provide valid and useful information about implementation outcomes. As a result, there are few well-validated measures in existence that measure therapist use of CBT that are feasible for use in community practice. This paper contributes to the literature by describing our community-partnered process for developing a measure of therapist use of CBT (Therapy Process Observation Coding Scale -Self-Reported Therapist Intervention Fidelity for Youth; TPOCS-SeRTIFY). This descriptive case study outlines the community-partnered approach we took to develop this measure. This case study will contribute to future research by serving as a guide to others aiming to develop pragmatic implementation measures. In addition, the TPOCS-SeRTIFY is a pragmatic measure of clinician use of CBT that holds promise for its use by both researchers and clinicians to measure the success of CBT implementation efforts.

Level of acuity, severity and intensity of care of adults and older adults admitted to the Intensive Care Unit

Renata Eloah de Lucena Ferretti-Rebustini, Nilmar da Silva Bispo, Winnie da Silva Alves et al.

ABSTRACT Objective: To characterize the level of acuity, severity and intensity of care of adults and older adults admitted to Intensive Care Units and to identify the predictors of severity with their respective predictive capacity according to the age group. Method: A retrospective cohort based on the analysis of medical records of individuals admitted to eight adult intensive care units in the city of São Paulo. The clinical characteristics at admission in relation to severity profile and intensity of care were analyzed through association and correlation tests. The predictors were identified by linear regression and the predictive capacity through the ROC curve. Results: Of the 781 cases (41.1% from older adults), 56.2% were males with a mean age of 54.1 ± 17.3 years. The burden of the disease, the organic dysfunction and the number of devices were the predictors associated with greater severity among adults and older adults, in which the organic dysfunction had the highest predictive capacity (80%) in both groups. Conclusion: Adults and older adults presented a similar profile of severity and intensity of care in admission to the Intensive Care Unit. Organic dysfunction was the factor with the best ability to predict severity in adults and older adults.

Physical activity as a psychosocial intervention among Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh: a rapid ecological community assessment

Ruth Wells, Shaun Némorin, Zachary Steel et al.

Over 907,000 Rohingya refugees are currently living in mostly makeshift camps in Bangladesh with limited resources to address their psychosocial needs. Physical activity is a scalable, low-cost intervention effective for prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases and mental health problems. Understanding community attitudes to physical activity and mental health is key to designing community endorsed and accessible interventions. We employed the ‘community readiness model’, a tool to assess community climate, needs and resources regarding physical activity as a community-driven psychosocial intervention. Fifteen Rohingya key informants were interviewed across multiple refugee camps in Cox’s Bazaar district in January 2019. Community readiness scores were calculated. Thematic analysis explored community-identified priorities. Community members strongly endorsed physical activity as an effective biopsychosocial strategy for relieving tension (a local idiom of distress). Despite leadership endorsement, space and resources to support community initiatives are extremely limited. For women, restrictions of movement were identified as barriers to participation. Physical activity is a feasible and acceptable community-identified strategy to promote psychosocial wellbeing among Rohingya refugees. Resources for physical activity programmes are extremely limited despite the identified social, mental and physical health benefits. Key implications for practice Physical activity was identified as a psychosocial strategy by Rohingya refugees living in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, which can help to relieve tension, which is a local idiom of distress. Resources (such as space and equipment) to support community-led physical activity initiatives are limited, despite support from community leadership. Access to physical activity is limited for women, due to security fears and cultural attitudes, as well as for people with disabilities and older people, due to overcrowding and lack of accessibility planning.

Relationship Between Cognitive Factors and Social Indicators in Designing the Healing Spaces for Old-Age People

Ali Sharghi, Farzaneh Salehi Kousalari

Objectives According to documentary statistics, the old age phenomenon in the world, as well as in Iran, is irrefutable. Two main problems of elderly people must be solved, i.e. low intelligence and social isolation. So, there is a need to provide a more suitable environment to the senior citizens in order to decrease their depression caused by loneliness. This study, thus, examines the importance of cognitive and social factors and the relationship between them, affecting the healing properties of the nursing homes of Iran. Methods & Materials This study was conducted through the survey process by examining 148 older adults (75 males and 73 females) living in 9 nursing homes in Tehran. A questionnaire was presented to the participants (Cronbach&rsquo;s alpha equal to 0.904) to investigate the association of perceptional (mental and emotional) and social factors. Results The relationships between the study variables and demographic data of the participants were analyzed. The mean age of the elderly age was 83 years, and the standard deviation was 0.58. The analyses by descriptive and inferential statistics (Pearson correlation coefficient 0.99 and significance level P&le;0.05 and variance analysis of Fisher LSD) were performed by SPSS 22.0. It was evident from the results that there is a relationship of perceptual-psychological (P=0.000) and socio-cultural (P=0.000) factors with the perceptual-emotional factor. There was also a relationship of perceptual-emotional (P=0.000) and socio-cultural (P=0.003) factors with the perceptual-mental factor. It was also revealed that there are significant relationships between the demographic characteristics of elderly people, the length of stay in the center, marital status, and the reason for their reference to the center.&nbsp; Conclusion Based on these findings, it is concluded that the perceptual factors (emotional and mental) of the elderly environment is affected by any alterations in their social and cultural relations. According to the results derived from the demographic characteristics, it is concluded that some features of people also influence these factors. Therefore, these features should be considered in architecture to improve life quality.

Convivendo com a diferença: o impacto da sorodiscordância na vida afetivo-sexual de portadores do HIV/AIDS Conviviendo con la diferencia: el impacto de la serodiscordancia en la vida afectiva-sexual de portadores del VIH/SIDA Living with the difference: the impact of serodiscordance on the affective and sexual life of HIV/AIDS patients

Renata Karina Reis, Elucir Gir

The purpose of this descriptive-exploratory qualitative study was to describe and analyze the impact of serodiscordance on the affective-sexual life of HIV/AIDS patients who have HIV seronegative heterosexual partners. Eleven HIV/AIDS carriers in outpatient clinic follow-up were interviewed, in a reference university-hospital in the state of São Paulo. Data were collected through recorded individual interviews and analyzed according to Prose analysis. Living with HIV/AIDS serodiscordance implies these couples have to deal with several intimacy-related difficulties, due to the possibility of HIV transmission to the seronegative partner. This has a negative effect on serodiscordant partners, reflecting in chan-ges in human sexual response, which could lead to sexual abstinence. Interdisciplinary care should be provided to HIV/AIDS carriers and their partners, thus providing comprehensive care regarding their sexuality and difficulties caused by serodiscordance.
