Species of the genus Streptomyces are of major pharmaceutical interest because they synthesize a variety of bioactive secondary metabolites. We have determined the complete nucleotide sequence of the linear chromosome of Streptomyces avermitilis. S. avermitilis produces avermectins, a group of antiparasitic agents used in human and veterinary medicine. The genome contains 9,025,608 bases (average GC content, 70.7%) and encodes at least 7,574 potential open reading frames (ORFs). Thirty-five percent of the ORFs (2,664) constitute 721 paralogous families. Thirty gene clusters related to secondary metabolite biosynthesis were identified, corresponding to 6.6% of the genome. Comparison with Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) revealed that an internal 6.5-Mb region in the S. avermitilis genome was highly conserved with respect to gene order and content, and contained all known essential genes but showed perfectly asymmetric structure at the oriC center. In contrast, the terminal regions were not conserved and preferentially contained nonessential genes.

An update to the 2007 American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) consensus statement on the identification, evaluation, and management of systemic hypertension in dogs and cats was presented at the 2017 ACVIM Forum in National Harbor, MD. The updated consensus statement is presented here. The consensus statement aims to provide guidance on appropriate diagnosis and treatment of hypertension in dogs and cats.

This thesis presents an extensive analysis of the behavior of topological solitons when one or more of their internal modes are activated. The first part of this manuscript is devoted to the study of the simplest topological solitons in (1+1) dimensions: kinks. Specifically, we investigate how these solutions emit radiation when one of their internal modes is initially excited, within the framework of the double $φ^4$ model. The simplest kink solution in this theory exhibits a complex internal mode structure that depends on a coupling constant appearing in the potential governing the dynamics. We will show how the amplitude and frequency of the emitted radiation are affected by changes in this coupling constant. We also examine the dynamics of wobbling kink/antikink scattering when the kinks possess more than one internal mode. To this end, we study kink/antikink collisions in the context of the simplest kink solution arising in the MSTB model. This analysis sheds light on the resonant energy exchange mechanism, allowing energy transfer between internal modes and the translational mode. The second part of this thesis focuses on excited vortex solutions in (2+1) dimensions. We begin with a detailed study of the internal mode structure associated with vortex solutions in the Abelian-Higgs model. We demonstrate how the problem can be significantly simplified by choosing an appropriate angular dependence for the eigenfunctions. Furthermore, we investigate the radiation emitted by a vortex when its internal mode is initially activated. To achieve this, we extend the analytical techniques used in (1+1) dimensions to field theories defined in two spatial dimensions. This enables us to compute the radiation amplitude, its frequency, and the decay of the internal mode amplitude due to energy loss via radiation. All analytical results are contrasted with data from numerical simulations.

This paper explores optimal data selection strategies for Reinforcement Learning with Verified Rewards (RLVR) training in the medical domain. While RLVR has shown exceptional potential for enhancing reasoning capabilities in large language models, most prior implementations have focused on mathematics and logical puzzles, with limited exploration of domain-specific applications like medicine. We investigate four distinct data sampling strategies from MedQA-USMLE: random sampling (baseline), and filtering using Phi-4, Gemma-3-27b-it, and Gemma-3-12b-it models. Using Gemma-3-12b-it as our base model and implementing Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO), we evaluate performance across multiple benchmarks including MMLU, GSM8K, MMLU-Pro, and CMMLU. Our findings demonstrate that models trained on filtered data generally outperform those trained on randomly selected samples. Notably, training on self-filtered samples (using Gemma-3-12b-it for filtering) achieved superior performance in medical domains but showed reduced robustness across different benchmarks, while filtering with larger models from the same series yielded better overall robustness. These results provide valuable insights into effective data organization strategies for RLVR in specialized domains and highlight the importance of thoughtful data selection in achieving optimal performance.
