Automated power line recognition and 3D reconstruction for intelligent grid monitoring
Shengbo Jin, Weigang Zhu, Shaohua Jiang
Monitoring and management of power line corridors are essential for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of power transmission systems. Traditional manual inspection methods are not only inefficient but also pose significant safety risks, while certain existing automated approaches suffer from limited effectiveness in complex terrains or in the presence of discontinuities in point cloud data, resulting in insufficient accuracy in power line extraction and frequent reconstruction failures. To address these challenges, this study proposes a novel power line reconstruction method termed Weighted Multi-feature & Multi-plane Projection Geometric Fusion (WM-MPGF). The proposed method comprises two sequential stages: Weighted Multi-Feature SVM (WMF-SVM) and Multi-plane Projection and Geometric Joint Reconstruction (MPG-Recon). Specifically, WMF-SVM introduces a weighted multi-feature support vector machine framework that integrates elevation data derived from the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with spatial features extracted via Principal Component Analysis (PCA), while optimizing feature weights through the entropy weight method to enhance the accuracy of power line identification. Subsequently, MPG-Recon performs geometric analysis to construct directional projection planes and applies the Hough transform to project power line points and determine their dominant orientations on the XOY and YOZ planes. The Davies-Bouldin index is employed to determine the optimal number of clusters, thereby enabling accurate estimation of the number of power lines. By integrating the K-means clustering algorithm, the method achieves effective separation of multiple power lines and ensures high-precision fitting of individual conductors. Experimental results indicate that the proposed approach achieves average fitting errors of 5.41 cm on the XOY plane and 5.68 cm in the vertical direction, successfully capturing the three-dimensional structural characteristics of power lines. The method constructs a robust 3D model and provides critical technical support for advanced applications in power line corridor monitoring and maintenance.
Generalized ModMax and the Early Universe
M. Sabido, V. Sierra
In this work, we study a cosmological model driven by Generalized ModMax nonlinear electrodynamics. We find that, with an appropriate choice of the theory's parameters, the universe's initial singularity can be avoided. Moreover, we also find that this model has an inflationary epoch that is consistent with the current values for $N$, $n_s$ and $r$. Therefore, using Generalized ModMax, we can construct a non singular Universe with an inflationary epoch.

Real-Time Streaming Mel Vocoding with Generative Flow Matching
Simon Welker, Tal Peer, Timo Gerkmann
The task of Mel vocoding, i.e., the inversion of a Mel magnitude spectrogram to an audio waveform, is still a key component in many text-to-speech (TTS) systems today. Based on generative flow matching, our prior work on generative STFT phase retrieval (DiffPhase), and the pseudoinverse operator of the Mel filterbank, we develop MelFlow, a streaming-capable generative Mel vocoder for speech sampled at 16 kHz with an algorithmic latency of only 32 ms and a total latency of 48 ms. We show real-time streaming capability at this latency not only in theory, but in practice on a consumer laptop GPU. Furthermore, we show that our model achieves substantially better PESQ and SI-SDR values compared to well-established not streaming-capable baselines for Mel vocoding including HiFi-GAN.

The Relationship Between Teacher’s Autonomy-Supportive Behavior and Learning Strategies Applied by Students: The Role of Teacher Support and Equity
Agne Brandisauskiene, Loreta Buksnyte-Marmiene, Jurate Cesnaviciene
et al.
This study aimed to investigate the role of teacher support and equity in the relationship between teacher’s autonomy-promoting behavior and students’ learning strategies. The approach examines the direct relationship between teacher’s autonomy-supportive behavior and students’ learning strategies and via perceived teacher support. It also discusses the effect of perceived equity for the relationship between autonomy-supportive behavior in teacher’s and teacher support. Data were obtained from 24 secondary schools in nine Lithuanian municipalities with poor socioeconomic level contexts ( N = 632 pupils). The findings revealed that teacher’s autonomy-supportive behavior is directly associated to student’s greater use of learning strategies, as well as through a mediator—student’s perceptions of teacher support. The association between teacher’s autonomy-supportive behavior and teacher support is moderated by students’ perceived equity so that the positive relationship is stronger for students with a higher than with a lower perceived equity. This study adds to the understanding of the importance of teacher behavior for students’ learning by concentrating on equity, which is especially essential for students from low-income families. Teachers may foster equity by providing more possibilities for autonomy for all students, creating a supportive classroom environment and inviting students to be active participants in the learning process.

General relativity in a nutshell I
Jorge Pinochet
Einstein's general relativity is the best available theory of gravity. In recent years, spectacular proofs of Einstein's theory have been conducted, which have aroused interest that goes far beyond the narrow circle of specialists. The aim of this work is to offer an elementary introduction to general relativity. In this first part, we introduce the geometric concepts that constitute the basis of Einstein's theory. In the second part we will use these concepts to explore the curved spacetime geometry of general relativity.

Case study: Diagnosing China's prevailing urban flooding—Causes, challenges, and solutions
Yang Ma, Yantao Cui, Huagao Tan
et al.
Abstract Accompanying its rapid urban development, prevalent urban flooding incidents have been occurring in China in the past two decades with increasing frequency. Through a comparison with generally accepted urban flooding management practices, we (the authors) identified that a lack of surface water runoff management considerations (i.e., missing a major drainage system in urban stormwater system) and inadequate local mitigation are the primary causes of urban flooding problems in China, which in turn is rooted in the planning stage of a city's development. Following identification of the primary causes for the problems, we propose the development of master drainage plans (MDPs) for the concerned cities or regions as the first effective step to mitigate the serious urban flooding problems facing many cities today. An MDP would provide necessary elements to develop a major drainage system for the city's stormwater system and allow for an accurate calculation of parameters necessary for installation of adequate local mitigations. Lessons learned in this study should be useful for China's administrative agencies and professionals while they try to find solutions to their urban flooding problems and beneficial to other nations facing rapid urban development in the future or with existing urban flooding threats.

Optimal Peak Regulation Strategy of Virtual and Thermal Power Plants
Peng Li, Yuanfeng Chen, Kang Yang
et al.
To achieve the national carbon-peak and carbon-neutral strategic development goals, it is necessary to build power systems dominated by renewable and sustainable energy. The future power system with a high proportion of renewable and sustainable energy is required to have large-scale, low-cost, flexible, and adjustable resources. To this end, this article aggregates user-side distributed energy storage and electric vehicles into a virtual power plant, considering the uncertainty of wind power fluctuations and the uncertainty of electric vehicle charging and discharging to establish a day-ahead and intra-day peak regulation model for combined peak regulation of virtual and thermal power plants. The bounding algorithm seeks the optimal strategy for the two-stage model of joint peak regulation and obtains the day-ahead and intra-day two-stage optimal peak regulation strategy. The simulation example shows that the virtual power plant and its day-ahead and intra-day optimal peak regulation strategy can reduce the peak regulation cost of the power system, as compared with the deep peak regulation of thermal power plants with a special supporting energy storage power station. This work provides a global perspective for virtual power plants to participate in the formulation of power system peak regulation rules.
CORWA: A Citation-Oriented Related Work Annotation Dataset
Xiangci Li, Biswadip Mandal, Jessica Ouyang
Academic research is an exploratory activity to discover new solutions to problems. By this nature, academic research works perform literature reviews to distinguish their novelties from prior work. In natural language processing, this literature review is usually conducted under the "Related Work" section. The task of related work generation aims to automatically generate the related work section given the rest of the research paper and a list of papers to cite. Prior work on this task has focused on the sentence as the basic unit of generation, neglecting the fact that related work sections consist of variable length text fragments derived from different information sources. As a first step toward a linguistically-motivated related work generation framework, we present a Citation Oriented Related Work Annotation (CORWA) dataset that labels different types of citation text fragments from different information sources. We train a strong baseline model that automatically tags the CORWA labels on massive unlabeled related work section texts. We further suggest a novel framework for human-in-the-loop, iterative, abstractive related work generation.

High-order gas-kinetic scheme in general curvilinear coordinate for iLES of compressible wall-bounded turbulent flows
Guiyu Cao, Kun Xu, Liang Pan
et al.
In this paper, a high-order gas-kinetic scheme in general curvilinear coordinate (HGKS-cur) is developed for the numerical simulation of compressible turbulence. Based on the coordinate transformation, the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) equation is transformed from physical space to computational space. To deal with the general mesh given by discretized points, the geometrical metrics need to be constructed by the dimension-by-dimension Lagrangian interpolation. The multidimensional weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) reconstruction is adopted in the computational domain for spatial accuracy, where the reconstructed variables are the cell averaged Jacobian and the Jacobian-weighted conservative variables. The two-stage fourth-order method, which was developed for spatial-temporal coupled flow solvers, is used for temporal discretization. The numerical examples for inviscid and laminar flows validate the accuracy and geometrical conservation law of HGKS-cur. As a direct application, HGKS-cur is implemented for the implicit large eddy simulation (iLES) in compressible wall-bounded turbulent flows, including the compressible turbulent channel flow and compressible turbulent flow over periodic hills. The iLES results with HGKS-cur are in good agreement with the refereed spectral methods and high-order finite volume methods. The performance of HGKS-cur demonstrates its capability as a powerful tool for the numerical simulation of compressible wall-bounded turbulent flows and massively separated flows.
Emergent gravity through non-linear perturbation
Karan Fernandes, Susovan Maity, Tapas K. Das
As of now, all analogue gravity models available in the literature deal with the emergence of an acoustic geometry through linear perturbations of transonic fluids only. It has never been investigated whether the analogue gravity phenomena is solely a consequence of linear perturbations, or rather a generic property of arbitrary perturbations of inhomogeneous, inviscid and irrotational fluids. In the present work, for the first time in the literature, we demonstrate that acoustic spacetimes may be formed through higher order non-linear perturbations, and thus establish that analogue gravity phenomena is rather more general than what was thought before. We consider spherically accreting astrophysical systems as a natural classical analogue gravity model, and develop a formalism to investigate non-linear perturbations of such accretion flows to arbitrary order. Our iterative approach involves a coupled set of equations for the mass accretion rate and the density of the fluid. In particular, we demonstrate that the wave equation for the mass accretion rate involves an acoustic metric which can be perturbatively constructed to all orders. We numerically solve the coupled equations about the leading transonic Bondi flow solution. This analysis uses boundary conditions set to the original unperturbed values, with the time dependence of the mass accretion rate perturbation taken to be exponentially damped. The perturbed solutions indicate that second order and higher perturbations of the metric generically cause the original acoustic horizon to oscillate and change in size. We explain this phenomenon in detail and its implications on non-linear perturbations of accretion flows in general.
