Consumers in the second-hand market – identification of the determinants of diversity in consumer behaviour in a circular economy

Małgorzata Grzywińska-Rąpca, Katarzyna Andruszkiewicz, Tomasz Wierzejski

In a circular economy, product reuse is crucial. In the second-hand goods market, consumers actively influence the circular economy processes. This paper aims to discover the factors influencing consumer behaviour in this market. The study compares consumer behaviour in Poland and Portugal and examines the differentiation of behaviour based on product categories, which fills the research gap. Statistical analysis was conducted on 400 respondents using a survey questionnaire, followed by structural equation modelling. The results indicate that external factors (brand reputation, buyer opinions and ethical considerations) influence purchasing behaviour more than internal product characteristics (price, quality, design). The study highlights the role of nationality in shaping purchasing preferences for second-hand goods. The results can be used to develop effective sustainability campaigns and marketing strategies, emphasising the importance of external factors. The study was limited to two countries, which suggests the need to extend to other regions and include qualitative research in the future.

Drought and its economic ramifications: analyzing the effects on rural households in Andar district, Ghazni province, Afghanistan

Abdul Matin Miani, Inayatullah Jan

The drought has exacerbated existing vulnerabilities in the agricultural sector, which is crucial for the livelihood of many rural communities. The study aimed to investigate the economic impacts of prolonged droughts, a pressing issue for Afghanistan's rural communities. The study was conducted in the Andar district of Ghazni province, specifically in the Yarghto area. It used a survey approach, collecting pertinent data with a questionnaire organised on a Likert scale. The study employed the Cochran formula and cluster sampling to select a sample size of 237 heads of households, primarily engaged in agriculture. These individuals were selected for their ability to complete the questionnaire and their role as breadwinners. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 27. The study indicates that droughts have had a significant impact on the rural economy, particularly on farmers' livelihoods in the examined area. The findings suggest that the economic consequences of drought are significant in reducing agricultural output, with a mean score of 4.55 in the first place, followed by increasing costs of groundwater extraction, averaging 4.26 in the second place; the impact of drought on reducing farmers' income and the adverse effects of them on rainfed wheat, with an average of 4.19 in the third place; adverse effects of drought on the livestock sector, which average 4.14 in the fourth place; and reducing the cultivation of arable land, averaging 4.10 in the fifth place. Future policies should prioritise economic diversification, despite agricultural development, and offer financial support to farmers to enhance their drought resilience.

Determinants of heating system selection among owners of single-family houses with renewable energy installations: an empirical analysis of decision-making factors

Alicja Małgorzata Graczyk, Michał Nadolny, Andrzej Graczyk et al.

This article examines household decision-making in adopting renewable energy sources (RES) for heating single-family houses in Poland. While policy frameworks promote electrification and heat pumps, prior research assumes homogeneous decision criteria and overlooks current RES users. This study addresses that gap through three objectives: (1) identify key decision aspects; (2) compare RES users and non-users; (3) segment RES users by system evaluations. Research questions explore drivers of choice, group differences, and segmentation. The hypothesis posits that RES users differ in technology evaluations but share decision-making aspects and expectations. A CATI survey (N = 650) analysed three-factor blocks using nonparametric tests. Findings confirm the hypothesis: segmentation reflects system evaluations, not purchasing criteria. Reliability and warranty dominate initial choices; energy efficiency and operating costs shape future expectations. Policy should target non-financial barriers, improve after-sales support, and define “switching points” to accelerate RES adoption.

Does trade always harm the environment? A panel quantile regression study of ASEAN economies

Indraswati Tri Abdi Reviane, Abdul Hamid Paddu, Aditya Idris et al.

This study investigates how trade openness influences environmental quality—measured explicitly by carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions—in nine ASEAN countries over the period 1990–2022. Using a panel quantile regression framework, the analysis uncovers heterogeneous effects across the CO₂-emission distribution, allowing for a more nuanced understanding of how trade and structural factors shape environmental outcomes in economies with differing pollution intensities. The results show that trade openness significantly increases CO₂ emissions at medium and high quantiles, indicating that environmental pressures intensify as countries become more deeply integrated into global trade, particularly in already high-emission contexts. Population size, however, does not exhibit a significant effect across quantiles, suggesting that demographic expansion alone is not a primary driver of emissions within the region. Additional control variables including economic growth, energy consumption, and industrial structure, offer further insight into the channels through which trade influences environmental performance: countries with higher reliance on fossil-fuel energy and more carbon-intensive production structures experience stronger pollution effects from trade. These findings underscore the need for ASEAN member states to integrate environmental safeguards into trade policy, promote cleaner production systems, and adopt differentiated mitigation strategies that reflect their position in the emissions distribution. By highlighting the conditional nature of trade–environment linkages, this study contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable development and supports evidence-based policymaking in emerging regional economies.

The firm-level AI-ESG performance nexus: a rapid literature review and future research agenda

Karolina Łudzińska

This exploratory study examines the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and corporate ESG performance. It considers both the positive impacts and potential limitations of AI deployment for ESG outcomes at the firm level, identifying key moderating variables through the lens of the Dynamic Capabilities Framework (DCF). A rapid literature review (RLR) was conducted, supplemented by a snowball search focused on Q1 and Q2 journal publications. The findings indicate a predominantly positive relationship between AI and firm-level ESG performance. The mechanisms through which AI contributes to ESG outcomes cluster around three interrelated domains: firm-level capabilities and characteristics; technological and operational mediators; and regional and contextual factors. Key contributions of AI include improvements in data processing and information governance, innovation, mitigation of greenwashing, facilitation of digital transformation, enhanced ESG operational efficiency, and stronger internal control mechanisms. However, the effectiveness of AI in improving ESG outcomes remains highly context dependent. This study contributes to the growing discourse on AI-enabled ESG transformation by offering a structured synthesis of existing research and outlining a future research agenda.

Analysis of Ronald Coase's theorem from the perspective of natural resources management

Jerzy Śleszyński

The aim of this article is to consider why the Coase theorem is used so rarely in the field of environmental protection policy and why possible proposals for the implementation of this solution are exposed to harsh criticism. Ronald Coase points out the significant problem of regulatory costs, and his proposal for negotiations may be a panacea for certain over-administration, excessive interventionism, regulatory rigidity or lack of trust in the market mechanism. However, according to the author of this paper, the implementation of the Coase theorem in the most typical and significant areas and problems of environmental policy is either not possible, will encounter enormous difficulties, or is questionable from the point of view of natural resources and social welfare. The reasons for the limitations will be discussed, including undefined or imprecisely defined ownership rights to many environmental resources, the non-market nature of many environmental goods depriving them of a market price, and above all, the chronic asymmetry of the parties that would negotiate with each other on an equal basis.

The image of voivodeship cities among residents: exploring age-related perspectives

Ewelina Tomaszewska, Ewa Glińska

Purpose: Image is one of the key issues in city marketing and branding. City image studies are essential tools for urban planners, social researchers as well as political decision-makers and local authorities aiming to understand how people perceive the urban space in which they live. The objective of this article is to identify the image of voivodeship cities among their residents based on the respondents’ age categories. Methodology/approach: The article relies on the results of a quantitative study conducted with a sample of 728 respondents residing in selected voivodeship cities in Poland. The research tool employed in the study was a standardised survey questionnaire. Findings: The findings reveal a statistically significant difference in the assessment of the overall city image by residents across various age categories. Practical implications: This article may serve as an inspiration for city managers who, in shaping a positive image of urban centres, can communicate information about selected city attributes tailored to the chosen age category of inhabitants. Originality/value: The research results unequivocally confirm that older city dwellers appear to be more inclined to feel an emotional connection to their place of residence and express positive opinions about it.

Assessment of the possibility of locating electric car charging stations using Fuzzy AHP and GIS – the case of Łódź, Poland

Paulina Szterlik-Grzybek, Adam Kucharski

This paper examines the possibility of locating electric vehicle charging stations using multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) and GIS. The study presents an integrated approach, which can be helpful in spatial planning. Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in using alternative power sources for motor vehicles. It is stimulated by top-down factors, such as regulations introduced by the European Commission or the introduction of the so-called “clean transport zones” by some local governments, as well as the bottom-up ones, including the increase in the cost of maintaining fossil fuel-powered cars. Local governments can employ the analysis presented in the paper to find a coherent development strategy for using electric vehicles (EVs) in cities. Based on the verified hypothesis, the Łódź city area has diverse suitability for EV charging stations, with predominant unfavourable regions for such investments. The research aims to find the methodology for performing the suitability analysis to locate new infrastructure elements in an urban space.

WORN VEHICLE TYRES IN POLISH ROAD CONSTRUCTION – ECOLOGY, LAW, USE, AND ECONOMICS

Ewa Ołdakowska

The recycling of worn tyres is enforced primarily by legal regulations, but it is also motivated by ecological and economic reasons. In Poland, recovery of rubber materials makes it possible to obtain materials of good quality and very broad applications, e.g. for plastic road surface or production of so-called rubber asphalt, used for the grindable layer of roads, as well as for innovative materials intended for filling bridge abutments of integrated bridges. The paper considers the financial aspect of using disintegrated rubber waste by analysing the cost of replacing the binder with different amounts of rubber dust (10%, 12%, 14%, 16%). With the assumptions made, the analysis allows for concluding that with an increase in the content of the rubber additive, the cost of the binder changes.

THE LEVEL OF REVERSE LOGISTICS IMPLEMENTATION IN TERMS OF WASTE MANAGEMENT IN POLISH VOIVODSHIPS ACCORDING TO A MULTIVARIATE COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

Anetta Zielińska

In practice, reverse logistics in Poland refers to a narrow approach within the framework of the waste management problem. The voivodships have been obliged to implement reverse logistics processes more effectively through waste management. The article aims to diagnose the implementation level of waste management processes (part of reverse logistics) in Polish voivodships. The research used a multivariate comparative analysis that ranks voivodships according to waste management indicators. The research will result in preparing the ranking of voivodships listing the leaders and those unsuccessful in the implementation of waste management. Based on the research, Śląskie and Podlaskie voivodships were selected as the ones presenting the highest level of waste management implementation, whereas the lowest level was recorded for Lubuskie voivodship.

Framing effect and public support for the environmental policy

Justyna Godawska

Framing effect consists in the fact that how a problem is presented (or framed) affects the decision maker’s perception of the  problem and their preferences. Public opinion about the environmental policy can vary depending on how the aims and consequences of particular policy actions or instruments are featured. The paper aims to exa‑mine how alternative ways of framing SO2 pollution problem (highlighting consequences for human health, nature and state finance) affect the public support for abatement policy (emission fees and emission trading) and bearing higher heating costs. The research made use of an experiment with students as participants. The results were analysed using the two-sample t-test. The findings suggest that highlighting the impact of environmentally damaging behaviour on human health may increase the public support for the imposition of environmental policy instruments and may encourage voluntary actions aimed to protect the environment.

Circular economy approach in revitalization: an opportunity for effective urban regeneration

Aleksandra Nowakowska, Małgorzata Grodzicka-Kowalczyk

The paper seeks to identify challenges and present opportunities the cities can take from applying circular economy (CE) based solutions in revitalization processes. In particular, the analysis focuses on revitalization areas and activities, which open up natural opportunities for implementing such CE based solutions. Successful examples of revitalization efforts undertaken in European cities illustrate and confirm the appropriateness and purposefulness of restoring degraded urban areas by transforming them into circular districts. For the purpose of the paper we conducted desk research and analysed the following sources: (1) subject matter literature, which we subjected to critical analysis; (2) reports and expert opinions drawn up by European and global institutions and organisations; (3) strategic documents of cities, which apply the CE idea in their revitalization efforts. The paper is the first attempt undertaken on grounds of Polish subject matter literature to combine CE related activities with urban regeneration.
