Electrocatalytic Reduction of O2 by ITO-IrOx: Implication for Dissolved Oxygen Sensor in the Alkaline Medium

Water pollution has badly affected human health, aquatic life, and the ecosystem. The purity of surface water can be measured in terms of dissolved oxygen (DO) measurements. Hence, it is desirable to have a portable and simple-to-use dissolved oxygen sensor. One possible remedy is an electrochemical sensor. Thus, we proposed an ITO-IrOx electrocatalyst for an effective and interference-free DO sensor utilizing the principle of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The ITO-IrOx was characterized using cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electrochemical impedance spectrometry (EIS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and reflectance spectroscopy-based techniques. Reflectance spectra of the ITO-IrOx electrode showed the photoresist capability. The EIS spectra revealed lower charge transfer resistance for the ITO-IrOx electrode in ORR. The IrOx film on ITO exhibited a quick (one electron, α = 1.00), and reversible electron transfer mechanism. The electrode demonstrated high stability for oxygen sensing, having a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.49 ppm and interference-free from some common ions (nitrate, sulphate, chloride etc.) found in water.

Contour dynamics of two-dimensional dark solitons

Equations for contour dynamics of dark solitons are obtained for the general form of the nonlinearity function. Their self-similar solution which describes the nonlinear stage of the bending instability of dark solitons is studied in detail.

Coinfection of Chlamydia spp. and herpesvirus in juvenile farmed Siamese crocodiles (Crocodylus siamensis) in Thailand

Background and Aim: For a decade, chlamydial and herpesvirus infections have caused significant morbidity and mortality in farmed crocodiles. In September 2017, a total of 160 juvenile freshwater Siamese crocodiles (Crocodylus siamensis) with conjunctivitis/pharyngitis lesions were admitted at the Veterinary Aquatic Animal Research Health Care Unit, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Mahidol University. All crocodiles did not respond well to antibiotics or supportive treatments and died. This study aimed to detect and identify the causative agents associated with conjunctivitis/pharyngitis and fatal outcomes in juvenile farmed Siamese crocodiles. Materials and Methods: A total of 138 pharyngeal and conjunctival swabs and conjunctival scrapes were collected from live crocodiles. All swab and scrape samples were DNA-extracted and amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using Chlamydiaceae- and herpesvirus-specific primers. Tissue samples (brain, lung, liver, heart, spleen, and intestine) were collected from two representative postmortem animals. All tissue samples were processed for molecular and pathological analyses. Results: PCR examinations identified chlamydial and herpesvirus DNA in 92% (126/138) and 100% (138/138), respectively, of the tested swab and scrape samples. Of those positive samples, 79% (26/33), 67% (4/6), and 98% (97/99) of the pharyngeal swabs, conjunctival swabs, and conjunctival scrapes, respectively, were positive for both chlamydial and herpesvirus DNA. Histopathological examination indicated necrosis and mononuclear cell infiltration in the liver, kidney, and intestine of the affected animals. The intracytoplasmic accumulation of Chlamydia was randomly observed in the examined tissue sample. Moreover, the presence of chlamydial and herpesvirus DNA was also detected in the tissue samples, including the heart, intestine, brain, lung, liver, and spleen, of the affected animals by PCR. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that Chlamydia spp. detected in the juvenile Siamese crocodiles was notably different from other known species in the Chlamydia genus, while the herpesvirus detected in the crocodiles was closely related to crocodyline herpesvirus 1. Conclusion: Based on histopathological and molecular examinations, this report provided the first evidence of coinfection of Chlamydia spp. and crocodyline herpesvirus 1 in juvenile Siamese crocodiles in Thailand.

Stability criterion for solitons of the ZK-type equations

Early results concerning the linear stability of the solitons in equation of the KDV-type \cite{KUZNETSOV1984314} are generalized to solitons describing by the ZK-type equation. The linear stability criterion for ground solitons in the Vakhitov-Kolokolov form is derived for such equations with arbitrary nonlinearity. For the power nonlinearity the instability criterion coincides with the condition of the Hamiltonian unboundedness from below. The latter represents the main feature for appearance of collapse in such systems.

Critical density of a soliton gas

We quantify the notion of a dense soliton gas by establishing an upper bound for the integrated density of states of the quantum-mechanical Schrödinger operator associated with the KdV soliton gas dynamics. As a by-product of our derivation we find the speed of sound in the soliton gas with Gaussian spectral distribution function.

Collision of water wave solitons

A classification of the time evolution of the two-soliton solutions of the Boussinesq equation is given, based on the number of extrema of the wave. For solitons moving in the same directions, three different scenarios are found, while it is shown that only one of these scenarios exists in case of oppositely moving solitons.
