Meaning and meaning extension of separation verbs in Kiswahili

Okoa Simile, Devet Goodness

This study analyses the semantics of Kiswahili separation verbs, with the aim of exploring their categorisation, usage, and patterns of meaning extension. The research is grounded in Cognitive Semantics, drawing on Frame Semantics and Profiling and Base Theory. A qualitative approach was employed, using data from Kiswahili newspapers, storybooks, and other written sources. Thirty-four separation verbs were identified. The analysis demonstrates that these verbs map both concrete and abstract domains, featuring culturally grounded metaphorical extensions. They structure conceptual frames involving detachment, division, destruction, transformation, and exposure. Several verb classes emerged, including those expressing removal from surfaces, parting, cutting and breaking, opening, dispersing, and altering the body. Examples include bandua ‘peel off’, funua ‘reveal’, and pasua ‘split’, which extend systematically to figurative senses. Cultural factors also shape these verbs, as evidenced by chinja ‘ritual slaughter’ and keketa ‘circumcise’. Highly productive verbs such as mwaga ‘spill’ extend to reveal secrets or perform vigorously, while others exhibit more limited extension. The main argument of the study is that Kiswahili separation verbs systematically encode both concrete and metaphorical concepts of separation, reflecting embodied experiences and cultural practices through complex cognitive and semantic structures.

A history of technical education in Ethiopia: The case of the Polytechnic Institute, 1963-2000

Fantahun Ayele

This research aims at exploring and analyzing the history of the Polytechnic Institute from its establishment in 1963 to its transformation as the Faculty of Engineering in 2000. The study is mainly based on the consultation of priceless archival documents kept in the record office of the former Polytechnic Institute (now Bahir Dar Institute of Technology). In addition, attempts have been made to substantiate archival sources by gathering oral evidence from pertinent people including the first graduates of the Polytechnic Institute. The information gathered from archival documents (letters, reports, graduation bulletins, newspapers, etc.) and interviews has been carefully examined, cross-checked, interpreted, and analyzed to reconstruct the history of the institute. The findings of the study show that the Polytechnic Institute was the result of the Cold War rivalry between the two superpowers, the United States and the former Soviet Union. When the U.S. government turned down his request for increased military assistance, Emperor Haile Selassie paid an official visit to Moscow in 1959. Among other things, the Soviet government offered financial assistance that led to the establishment of the Bahir Dar Polytechnic Institute in 1963. The Soviet government also supported the institute by assigning technical advisers and instructors, whose number grew substantially after the 1974 revolution. The ideological solidarity between the two countries brought more scholarship opportunities to the students and instructors of the Institute. In 2000, the union of the Polytechnic Institute and Bahir Dar Teachers College gave rise to the birth of Bahir University. In the last sixty years, the Institute has produced world-class technologists.

The Urban Land, the Disputed Land: The Land Disputes of Pawirorejo in Surakarta 1982-1985

Aris Agus Styawan

Abstract: The issue of land disputes in urban areas during the New Order era intensified due to the massive use of land for housing needs and to support various development projects. Especially in the late 1970s, land issues had become a major concern in cities at the municipal level. This paper analyzed the causes of land disputes involving the Pawirorejo family in the city of Surakarta. This historical research used archival sources such as trial documents from the Surakarta Court Office, regional statistical data, and newspapers. The study's results suggest that the state-controlled lands in Surakarta, which did not receive full attention, triggered the Pawirorejo land dispute; consequently, the city government's weak control also played a role. Furthermore, land as a commodity with significant value in the city of Surakarta is vulnerable to conflicts, and the adage "land for the people" becomes very difficult to fully realize amidst the strengthening currents of development and the interests of the authorities. Therefore, the use and ownership of land in urban areas, especially state land in Surakarta, require explicit regulation through legal means. Navigating external pressures: a study on CSR disclosure practices in an emerging region

Enyuan Su, Rosli Mahmood, Hishamuddin Md. Som

The engagement of Chengdu with global initiatives, notably the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), its nomination as a pilot city for International Sustainable Development, and its active participation in the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group’s Green and Thriving Neighborhoods Initiative, has highlighted the increasing necessity for local companies to adopt sustainable development practices amid shifting global and national economic landscapes. This study probes the relationship between external organizational pressures and the corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure behaviors of listed firms. Employing content analysis of corporate annual reports and leveraging the integrated theoretical frameworks of legitimacy, stakeholder, and institutional theories, this study scrutinizes the influence of external pressure determinants on CSR disclosure practices among 68 listed companies in Chengdu throughout 2019 to 2020. Our empirical findings provide some critical insights. First, there is a discernible positive trend in the extent and quality of CSR disclosures in Chengdu despite these being at relatively modest levels. Second, environmental sensitive industries (ENVIs) and state-owned enterprises (OWNs) emerge as institutional stakeholders exerting a significant effect on both the extent and quality of CSR disclosure. Third, media exposure (MEDIA) analyzed through data from three officially designated newspapers in China serves a bifurcated function, amplifying the extent of CSR disclosures while inversely affecting their quality. These discoveries hold significant implications for companies and policymakers in Chengdu aiming to elevate sustainability practices influenced by external institutional stakeholders.

Junjie Aw, Sharna Si Ying Seah, Benjamin Jun Jie Seng et al.

COVID-19 has culminated in widespread infections and increased deaths over the last 3 years. In addition, it has also resulted in collateral economic and geopolitical tensions. Vaccination remains one of the cornerstones in the fight against COVID-19. Vaccine hesitancy must be critically evaluated in individual countries to promote vaccine uptake. We describe a survey conducted in three Singapore community hospitals looking at healthcare workers’ vaccine hesitancy and the barriers for its uptake. The online anonymous survey was conducted from March to July 2021 on all staff across three community hospital sites in SingHealth Singapore. The questionnaire was developed following a scoping review and was pilot tested and finalized into a 58-item instrument capturing data on demographics, contextual features, knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and other vaccine-related factors in the vaccine hesitancy matrix. Logistic regression analysis was employed for all co-variates that are significant in univariate analysis. The response rate was 23.9%, and the vaccine hesitancy prevalence was 48.5% in the initial phase of the pandemic. On logistic regression analysis, only being female, a younger age, not having had a loved one or friend infected with COVID-19 and obtaining information from newspapers were associated with vaccine hesitancy in healthcare workers in Singapore community hospitals.

Sabrina Calandrón, Santiago Galar , Mariana Da Silva Lorenz

The National Police of Uruguay obtained the right to unionize in 2006. This right was obtained after an intense intervention process of the Police in the public arena. With the regional context considered, this article seeks to analyze the unionization dimensions of the Uruguayan Police, paying close attention to the political tools developed and the diverse union affiliation in this process. Among its key results, this research highlights how the union model, which has been created by political sectors and is very different from the “trade union”, makes the fragmentation and diversification of organizations possible. These organizations coexist, associate with each other, and contest power according to the circumstances and the political opportunities present with the incumbent government. This research was conducted with a qualitative and exploratory methodology due to the lack of previous studies on this topic. In-depth interviews with key informants were conducted, and the information from two newspapers (2015-2018 period) made it possible to reconstruct facts and to give voices to important actors. Finally, institutional websites from unions were registered, which were complimented with information about laws and decrees related to the themes of analysis of the corpus.

The construction of the empirical corpus involved documentary sources such as: correspondence from teachers, school inspectors and city councilors, school requests and inventories, reports from the council, acts and decrees, as well as newspapers of the time. Thus, it was identified that in municipal public schools, objects mediated the schooling process, based on the perspective of the positivist republican project of civilization, homeland and progress.
