Integration of Intangible Cultural Heritage Elements into Furniture Design Based on Symbolic Semantics and AHP: A Case Study of Qianci

Jiahang Chen, Huimei Xia, Shun Yu

This study explored methods for integrating intangible cultural heritage (ICH) elements into modern furniture design, using Qianci as an example. Through symbolic semantics analysis, the cultural external layers of form, color, craftsmanship, and composition and the cultural internal layers of symbolic meaning, ideology, religious beliefs, and moral ethics of Qianci symbols were interpreted, extracting core design elements suitable for modern furniture design. Based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a hierarchical model was established to integrate intangible cultural heritage symbols with furniture design, quantitatively analyzing the importance of key elements in the design process. The results indicate that cultural symbolism, form design, cultural element integration, decorative patterns, cultural heritage value, and environmental friendliness are key indicators in furniture design. Accordingly, two thematic furniture design proposals were developed and evaluated, confirming the innovative potential and application value of Qianci symbols in modern furniture design. This study provides new perspectives and practical examples for the revitalization of intangible cultural heritage elements and the diversification of furniture design.

Islamic Environmentalism and Epistemic Waste

Aysenur Cam

ABSTRACT Environmental ethics is concerned with how humans use and relate to the environment, including its conservation and protection. In recent decades, works on Islamic environmentalism have increased multiplied with efforts to ground an ethics based on the resources of the Islamic scholarly tradition. In this article, I offer an approach to environmentalism that is based on a Qur’anic epistemology of divine names. Utilizing Said Nursi’s (d. 1960) Qur’anic commentary, the Risâle‐i Nur , I argue that waste ( isrāf ) occurs when the epistemic meaning carried by all of creation is not engaged with or read. An Islamic environmental ethics should look to how one interacts with the physical world in light of its relation to the Creator and how it serves to convey meaningful speech content through the manifestation of divine qualities.

The Effect of a ‘Humanistic’ Intervention on the Social Responsibility of University Students

Olalla García-Taibo, Salvador Baena-Morales, Arturo Cadenas et al.

Today’s youth navigate a complex balance between traditional and modern values in a changing world. In this context, education plays a crucial role in transforming society and promoting values that align with the Sustainable Development Goals, such as justice and equality, with Ethics and Christianity supporting these principles. Moreover, Physical Education (PE) is highlighted as a tool for promoting moral development and social inclusion; however, gaps exist in studies focusing on the integration of Ethics and Christian values in PE and sports. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of an intervention in the subjects of Ethics and Christianity on social responsibility among university students in PE Sciences. The design of this study was quasi-experimental with quantitative pre- and post-test measures and three groups (one Control Group). The sample comprised 95 students who responded to the University Social Responsibility Scale. Experimental Group 1 participated in Christianity class, and Experimental Group 2 in Ethics class. A Mann–Whitney U, Wilcoxon test, and ANOVA were used. The effect associated with the group variable was confirmed. We have partially affirmed that ethical and religious intervention positively influences students’ perception and practice of social responsibility. Future studies should explore pedagogical models that effectively enhance social responsibility among university students.

Islamic Education Model in the Context of Sexual Bullying Prevention with a Sociolinguistic Approach

Maya Safitri, Hasniyati, Nia Wardhani et al.

This research aims to develop an Islamic education model for preventing sexual bullying using a sociolinguistic approach. This approach analyzes language use and social interactions within Islamic education to understand and mitigate sexual bullying behavior. The main issue highlighted is the lack of understanding regarding the integration of sociolinguistic principles into these models. A qualitative research method was employed, involving 5 respondents from Islamic educational settings, 2 sociolinguistic experts, and 3 Islamic religious teachers. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, with social integration theory applied in the data analysis. The findings indicate that educational models such as communication etiquette training, social skills development, the teaching of law and ethics, Islamic religious education, and shared responsibility learning play crucial roles in preventing sexual bullying. They support the formation of a positive social identity and strengthen interpersonal relationships. The uniqueness of this research lies in integrating sociolinguistic and Islamic approaches to address sensitive issues like sexual bullying. In conclusion, Islamic education models based on sociolinguistic principles have significant potential to reduce incidents of sexual violence in educational environments.

Response to Focus Issue

Christopher B. Barnett

ABSTRACTBarnett responds to three articles that put the thought of Søren Kierkegaard in conversation with modern popular media. He argues that each of these pieces demonstrates that Kierkegaard's criticism of the burgeoning free press remains relevant today, particularly in the areas of journalistic practice, mental health, and political responsibility. At the same time, however, Barnett wonders if the radical nature of the Dane's critique has been fully considered. For Kierkegaard, in other words, it is not just that popular media have flaws in need of correction; it is that the media constitute “the evil principle in the modern world.”

Religious rules and thick description: some thoughts from the anthropology of Islam

Morgan Clarke

The recent anthropology of ethics has sought to look beyond rules to themes such as the cultivation of the virtuous self.  Anthropology generally has grown impatient with what Bourdieu called ‘the fallacies of the rule’ as a key term for describing the social. But rules remain a crucial dimension of ethical practice in many contexts, including religious ones. This article focuses on British Muslim conceptions and practice of the religious rules of Islam in order to highlight the complexity,  diversity, and subtlety of everyday practices of rule-following. Sticking to the rules, even in the non-Muslim majority setting of the UK, is important to many, although what it means to follow the rules and how to do so are not always straightforward. By going beyond stereotypes of ‘mere’ ‘rigid’ rules, blindly followed or boldly evaded, I demonstrate both the necessity and the possibility of a thicker description of religious rules. Keywords: Rules; piety; ethics; morality; Islam; Shia; sharia

Penafsiran Ayat-Ayat Tidur Sebagai Kematian Kecil Dalam Kitab Tafsir Mafatih Al-Ghaib

Muh Fatihuddin

Sleep is a very important activity for human life, sleep itself is a state in which the spirit is grasped by God and returned when he awakens, and has similarities with the death that is both held by God. In the Qur'an there are many verses about sleep that equate to death. This study discusses sleep as a small death perspective of the Qur'an using his analysis Fakhr al-Di@n al-Ra>zi@ in the book of Mafa>ti@h{ al-Ghayb. The author found that there are two verses that are in accordance with the research, namely in surat al-An'a>m verse 60 and az-Zumar verse 42. From the results of the study revealed that sleep is a condition in which a person's sense of taste is lost from the body so that the sense of birth does not perform activities. And sleep is also a state in which God grasps the spirit of a person who sleeps and is restored upon awakening. Sleep is a type with dead that distinguishes is if the person who sleeps his spirit is cut off imperfectly, while when in a dead position his spirit is cut off perfectly. According to other mufassir that sleep is a condition in which his spirit can meet with other spirits it is not separated from god's will. Related to all that is a super natural thing that must be believed. While the implication of the interpretation is a person who is in a state of sleep he is still burdened with abomination, and doing it is when he has awakened. And there is no obligation to compensate when someone is in a sleep condition doing damage.

Not a Prophet, A Mirror

Atalia Omer

ABSTRACTShaul Magid's Meir Kahane: The Public Life and Political Thought of an American Jewish Radical (2021) has the potential to urge American and Israeli Jews to “own” Meir Kahane and hold him up as a mirror reflecting the toxic and tragic dimensions of modern Jewish history. Such a look in the mirror can only happen once Jews see Palestinian suffering as central to the building of the state of Israel and also how they are complicit and implicated in such suffering.

CULTURAL APPROPRIATION IN BIOREGIONALISM AND THE NEED FOR A DECOLONIAL ETHICS OF PLACE

Joseph Wiebe

AbstractBioregionalism is an environmental movement that attempts to create decentralized, self‐determined communities connected to landscape and ecological features. Activists and scholars have used the phrase “becoming native” to describe the process of belonging to place. Despite its cultural appropriation, not only do bioregional writers still use the metaphor, but it has also been defended within religious studies. Instead of relying on these arguments to address ethical issues, claims to place need a decolonial framework. Looking at various voices within bioregionalism through Indigenous critiques displays both the movement’s issues as well as decolonial processes for local adaptation. Wendell Berry exemplifies the problems of bioregional ethics but also shows bioregionalism's capacity for decolonization.

CHURCH UNDER LEVIATHAN

Baldwin Wong

AbstractPolitical philosophers have long disagreed on the issue of whether churches should exercise restraint in the appeal to religious reasons in public discussion and political mobilization. Exclusivists defend the restraint, whereas inclusivists reject it. Both sides, however, assume the existence of a democratic government. In this essay, I discuss whether churches should exercise restraint in a non‐democratic, authoritarian society. I defend inclusivism and believe that churches should not restrain themselves, especially when doing so can promote democracy and prevent severe injustices. First, I argue that two exclusivist arguments which justify the restraint cannot be applied in an authoritarian society. Second, I defend inclusivism because religious reasons are effective in cultivating active citizens that strengthen the democratic movement. Finally, I use the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong as an example to show how inclusivism can enhance democratic movements under authoritarianism.

THE AESTHETIC LIFE OF RELIGION AND ETHICS ON LONG STREET, CAPE TOWN

Ala Rabiha Alhourani

AbstractThis ethnography explores the aesthetic dimension of religion and the sensational ways in which it contributes to shaping ordinary ethics on Long Street in Cape Town, South Africa. In the context of everyday social life on Long Street, homeless peoples’ claim of an ethical character is denied recognition. Long Street is a public space of conviviality and differences, a hybrid social reality marked with growing urbanization, globalization, and neoliberalism, and overseen by a continuous presence of security units. It is a street saturated with ever‐increasing social problems resulting from a revival of class differences. Ordinary ethics on Long Street is complex, unpredictable, dynamic, and vulnerable, and stands the risk of potential breakdown. Against this backdrop, this ethnography recounts the ways in which aesthetic formations of religion stimulate technologies of imaginations that offer homeless people sensory experiences of refuge, recognition, being, and belonging amidst social exclusion and a harsh lived experience. Aesthetics of religion are ethics made visible in public life.

Approaching a dietary ethics in Islam according to the Qur’an and hadith. A categorical examination of the primary scriptures to determine the relevance of food traditions today This article presents a review of the primary Islamic scriptures, the Qur’an and hadith (reports of statements or actions of the prophet Muhammad). While Muslims believe the Qur’an to be an oral revelation from God (cf. Çınar 2017), the prophetic accounts of hadith constitute the primary source of devout religious practices (cf. Schimmel 1989). As such, both texts define and shape Islamic practices. They also describe a plethora of dietary rules. The examination of scriptural sources will reveal the reasoning and purpose behind Islamic dietary ethics, relevant categories will be defined and their impact on today’s practices will be investigated
