Character journaling is a well-established exercise in actor training, but many actors struggle to sustain it due to cognitive burden, the blank page problem, and unclear short-term rewards. We reframe large language models not as co-authors but as maieutic partners-tools that guide reflection through context-aware questioning rather than producing text on behalf of the user. Based on this perspective, we designed Actor's Note, a journaling tool that tailors questions to the script, role, and rehearsal phase while preserving actor agency. We evaluated the system in a 14-day crossover study with 29 actors using surveys, logs, and interviews. Results indicate that the tool reduced entry barriers, supported sustained reflection, and enriched character exploration, with participants describing different benefits when AI was introduced at earlier versus later rehearsal stages. This work contributes empirical insights and design principles for creativity-support tools that sustain reflective practices while preserving artistic immersion in performance training.

EN. In this interview, Nik Usher, associate professor in communication at the University of San Diego and Mellon Foundation New Directions Fellow, reflects on the evolution of their research on journalism and democracy. Initially focused on the ethnographic study of newsroom practices (notably at The New York Times), Usher gradually shifted their interest toward a critical analysis of journalism’s role in a context of democratic backsliding, confronted with the growing influence of market forces, technological platforms, and new forms of authoritarianism. This evolution is also grounded in a heightened awareness of inequalities in access to information and the marginalization of audiences distant from the dominant journalistic model. Usher emphasizes the importance of sharing research findings beyond the academic sphere, denouncing barriers to knowledge access, and advocates for public engagement by scholars as a form of resistance. Their book News for the Rich, White, and Blue exemplifies this critical stance by highlighting structural inequalities in the production of news in the United States. Usher also underlines the need for a continuous reexamination of research methods, particularly through a dialogue with quantitative approaches, in order to rethink what "enough journalism" truly means to sustain a functional democracy. Furthermore, the interview explores how this commitment translates into teaching: Usher sees the education of students as a fundamental act of fostering critical thinking and autonomy.

FR.

This article examines how the intellectual property regime works in digital media and how free open source software is pushing the boundaries of the regime on the digital realm. The main purpose of this article is to highlight the differences that models of knowledge production can make in the process of building a participatory society. This article uses Michael Gibbons' Mode 1 and Mode 2 theories as a method. In the light of this theory, power relations in the production and distribution of knowledge are discussed. The Mode 2 model points to a commons-based model of knowledge production that has a democratic potential. The intellectual property regime is struggling to control the flow of information on the internet. It is quite difficult for the intellectual property rights regime to control the circulation of knowledge on the Internet, as digital media play a key role in the free flow of knowledge. Free open source software is an effective model for those who support the free flow of information in the digital space.
Despite being considered old media, television is still one of the most powerful media forms. With the rise of digital platforms and streaming services, television continues to play a central role in globalization, dissemination of information, and entertainment. These new developments have helped television acquire a new significance by enabling a wider consumption of TV content through the Internet and other digital technologies all over the world. While this new media environment has contributed to an increase in television production worldwide, it has also led the way for a number of players in the Global South to become visible outside of their national contexts. The TV products originating from the Global South, which have reached millions of viewers, have challenged the global monopoly of the West (Thussu, 2024).

Domain adaptation is a widely used method in natural language processing (NLP) to improve the performance of a language model within a specific domain. This method is particularly common in the biomedical domain, which sees regular publication of numerous scientific articles. PubMed, a significant corpus of text, is frequently used in the biomedical domain. The primary objective of this study is to explore whether refining a pre-training dataset using specific quality metrics for scientific papers can enhance the performance of the resulting model. To accomplish this, we employ two straightforward journal impact metrics and conduct experiments by continually pre-training BERT on various subsets of the complete PubMed training set, we then evaluate the resulting models on biomedical language understanding tasks from the BLURB benchmark. Our results show that pruning using journal impact metrics is not efficient. But we also show that pre-training using fewer abstracts (but with the same number of training steps) does not necessarily decrease the resulting model's performance.
The digital age has sparked a revival in the use of "dark mode" (DM) design in many everyday applications as well as text editors and integrated developer environments. We present the case for adding a DM theme to astronomical journals, including a modified class file that generates the theme you see here as a potential option. DM themes have many beneficial attributes to a user such as saving battery power and reducing screen burn-in on devices with OLED screens, increasing figure hopping efficiency, pairing well with colorblind-friendly palettes, and limiting rhodopsin loss while observing. We analyzed iPoster design trends from AAS 237 and 238 to gauge the possible reception of our DM theme, and we estimate that at least 35%, but likely closer to 42%, of the community would welcome this addition to journals. There are some drawbacks to using a DM theme when reading papers, including increased ink usage when reading in a print medium and some diminished legibility and comprehension in low-light conditions. While these issues are not negligible, we believe they can be mitigated, especially with a paired submission of both a DM and traditional, "light mode" manuscript. It is also likely that many of us will become better astronomers as a result of adding DM to journals.
Popular Fast Radio Burst models involve rotating magnetized neutron stars, yet no rotational periodicities have been found. Small datasets exclude exact periodicity in FRB 121102. Recent observations of over 1500 bursts from each of FRB 121102 and FRB 20201124A also have not found periodicity. Periodograms of events with cosine-distributed random offsets as large as $\pm 0.6 P$ from a strict period $P$ would still reveal the underlying periodicity. The sensitivity of periodograms of long data series, such as bursts observed on multiple days, to slow frequency drifts is mitigated by considering individual observing sessions, and results are shown for FRB 121102. Models of repeating FRB without intrinsic periodicity are considered, as are models of apparently non-repeating FRB.

Like the old saying, "a graph is worth a thousand words," the non-verbal language, encapsulated in the concept of inscription, is a fundamental rhetorical device in the construction of knowledge represented by research outputs. As many inscriptions are deeply situated in a scientific and data-driven research paradigm, they can be used to understand the relationships between research traditions involved in the field of digital humanities (DH), a highly cross-disciplinary field that is frequently regarded as a battleground between these distinct research traditions, especially the humanities and STEM fields. This paper presents a quantitative, community-focused examination of how inscriptions are used in English-language research articles in DH journals. We randomly selected 252 articles published between 2011 and 2020 from a representative DH journal list, and manually coded and classified inscriptions and author domains in these publications. We found that inscriptions have been increasingly used during the past decade and their uses are more intensive in publications led by STEM authors comparing to other domains. This study offers a timely survey of the disciplinary landscape of DH from the perspective of inscriptions and sheds light on how different research approaches collaborated and combated in the field of DH.
incelenmektedir. Çalışma, kadın kahramanın finansal bilgi alanında yetersiz;

Today's scientific research is an expensive enterprise funded largely by taxpayers' and corporate groups' monies. It is a critical part in the competition between nations, and all nations want to discover fields of research that promise to create future industries, and dominate these by building up scientific and technological expertise early. However, our understanding of the value chain going from science to technology is still in a relatively infant stage, and the conversion of scientific leadership into market dominance remains very much an alchemy rather than a science. In this paper, we analyze bibliometric records of scientific journal publications and patents related to graphene, at the aggregate level as well as on the temporal and spatial dimensions. We find the present leaders of graphene science and technology emerged rather late in the race, after the initial scientific leaders lost their footings. More importantly, notwithstanding the amount of funding already committed, we find evidences that suggest the 'Golden Eras' of graphene science and technology were in 2010 and 2012 respectively, in spite of the continued growth of journal and patent publications in this area.

Visualization of the massive data is a challenging endeavor. Extracting data and providing graphical representations can aid in its effective utilization in terms of interpretation and knowledge discovery. Publishing research articles has become a way of life for academicians. The scholarly publications can shape-up the professional growth of authors and also expand the research and technological growth of a country, continent and other demographic regions. Scholarly articles have grown in gigantic numbers that are published in different domains by various journals. Information related to articles, authors, their affiliations, number of citations, country, publisher, references and other information is like a gold mine for statisticians and data analysts. This data when used skillfully, via visual analysis tool, can provide valuable understanding and can aid in deeper exposition for researchers working in domains like scientometrics and bibliometrics. Since the data is not readily available, we used Google scholar, a comprehensive and free repository of scholarly articles, as data source for our study. Data was scraped from Google scholar and stored as a graph and later visualized in the form of nodes and its relationships, which offered discerning and concealed information of growing impact of articles, journals and authors in their domains. Not only this, evident domain shift of an author, various research domains spread for an author, predicting emerging domain and subdomains, detecting cartel behavior at Journal and author-level was also depicted by graphical analysis. Neo4j graph database was used in the background to help store the data in structured manner.
