On The Architectural Identity of A Lost Soap Factory on Cunda Island: An Analysis in The Light of Excavation Data and Visual Documents

Hasan Uçar, Zeynep Özkan Tekneci

Soap factories function not only as production facilities but also as valuable testimonies to their era, reflecting the construction techniques, material choices, and plan typologies that define industrial architecture. The town of Ayvalık, distinguished by its prominence in olive oil production, preserves a variety of such structures. This study focuses on a soap factory located on Alibey (Cunda) Island, which was destroyed during the 1944 earthquake. The research combines the results of salvage excavations conducted in 2023 with restitution projects and historical visual materials to investigate the architectural features and contextual significance of the building. Excavation evidence including foundation remains, hearth traces, smokestack fragments, and a plastered basin confirms the industrial function of the structure as a soap factory. Primary data are derived from excavation findings and historical photographs, while secondary data are obtained through comparative analyses of other soap and oil factories that either survive or have been documented in the region. This methodological approach not only allows the identification of the building’s specific spatial and formal characteristics but also enables its interpretation within the broader framework of regional production traditions. Of particular importance are a 1929 photograph and early postcards, which provide critical insights into the number of stories, façade arrangement, and certain architectural details. The juxtaposition of excavation data with these visual materials contributes to establishing a robust foundation for restitution proposals. Comparisons with similar factories in the region demonstrate that the building shares common architectural traditions yet exhibits distinctive features. The findings indicate that the soap factory was constructed between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of the historical continuity of industrial production facilities in Ayvalık and highlights the building as one of the rare examples on Cunda Island, underscoring its architectural and historical significance.

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Traditional Art Forms: A Disruption or Enhancement

Viswa Chaitanya Marella, Sai Teja Erukude, Suhasnadh Reddy Veluru

The introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the domains of traditional art (visual arts, performing arts, and crafts) has sparked a complicated discussion about whether this might be an agent of disruption or an enhancement of our traditional art forms. This paper looks at the duality of AI, exploring the ways that recent technologies like Generative Adversarial Networks and Diffusion Models, and text-to-image generators are changing the fields of painting, sculpture, calligraphy, dance, music, and the arts of craft. Using examples and data, we illustrate the ways that AI can democratize creative expression, improve productivity, and preserve cultural heritage, while also examining the negative aspects, including: the threats to authenticity within art, ethical concerns around data, and issues including socio-economic factors such as job losses. While we argue for the context-dependence of the impact of AI (the potential for creative homogenization and the devaluation of human agency in artmaking), we also illustrate the potential for hybrid practices featuring AI in cuisine, etc. We advocate for the development of ethical guidelines, collaborative approaches, and inclusive technology development. In sum, we are articulating a vision of AI in which it amplifies our innate creativity while resisting the displacement of the cultural, nuanced, and emotional aspects of traditional art. The future will be determined by human choices about how to govern AI so that it becomes a mechanism for artistic evolution and not a substitute for the artist's soul.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking in microscopic single-crystal Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ devices

Remko Fermin, Matthijs Rog, Guido Stam et al.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductivity is a quintessential unconventional quantum state. In Josephson junctions, time-reversal symmetry breaking manifests itself in the supercurrent interference pattern as the invariance of the critical current under the reversal of both transport and magnetic field directions, i.e., $I_\text{c+}(H) = I_\text{c-}(-H)$. So far, such systems have been realized in devices where superconductivity is injected into a deliberately constructed weak link medium, usually carefully tuned by external magnetic fields and electrostatic gating. In this work, we report time-reversal symmetry breaking in spontaneously emerging Josephson junctions without intentionally constructed weak links. This is realized in ultra-pure single-crystal microstructures of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, an unconventional superconductor with a multi-component order parameter. Here, the Josephson effect emerges intrinsically at the superconducting domain wall, where the degenerate states partially overlap. In addition to violating $I_\text{c+}(H) = I_\text{c-}(-H)$, we find a rich variety of exotic transport phenomena, including a supercurrent diode effect present in the entire interference pattern, two-channel critical current oscillations with a period that deviates from $Φ_0$, fractional Shapiro steps, and current-switchable bistable states with highly asymmetric critical currents. Our findings provide direct evidence of TRSB in unstrained Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and reveal the potential of domain wall Josephson junctions, which can emerge in any superconductor where the pairing symmetry is described by a multi-component order parameter.

Improving Liberal Arts Curriculum through Analyzing the Perceptions Gaps and Priority Setting in Core Competencies between Faculties and Students : A Case Study of G University

Juyoung Hong

This study aimed to analyze the perception gaps in core competencies between faculty and students and derive improvements for the liberal arts curriculum from the perspective of developing new competencies required in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era. The study investigated faculty and student perceptions of sub-competencies under G University's six core competencies. The participants included 103 faculties and 213 students. An online survey was conducted from May to July 2023. The analysis was performed using Borich's needs assessment and The Locus for Focus model. The study analyzed differences in importance-performance perceptions of core competencies between faculties and students and identified competencies requiring priority improvement. The results showed that faculty emphasized fundamental and essential competencies such as empathy, creativity, and thinking skills, while students placed more importance on practical competencies like knowledge information utilization, self-directed learning, and foreign language skills. There were significant gaps between current and target levels in competencies that faculties’ considered important. Faculties showed high educational needs in the order of empathy> creativity>thinking skills>ethical awareness>knowledge information utilization>responsibility, while students' educational needs were high in the order of knowledge information utilization>creativity>self- direction>decision-making>community citizenship> foreign language utilization. This study is significant in that it empirically identified perception gaps between faculties and students regarding core competencies and provided practical evidence for efficient allocation of limited educational resources. Based on the findings, the study suggests practical measures including curriculum design considering faculty-student perception gaps, establishment of integrated competency assessment systems, improvement of practical teaching-learning methods, and institutional support for these improvements.

Design and Case Analysis of AI Liberal Arts Curriculum by Level with Engaged Learning : With a Focus on AI and Machine Learning

Eunhhee Roh, Moonki Cho

With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, artificial intelligence (AI) is heralding significant changes in industries and the economy. These changes transcend specific academic disciplines, positioning AI as essential knowledge for everyone. Consequently, the importance of formulating AI-related policies and education is increasingly emphasized worldwide. Additionally, as the significance of data-driven decision-making grows, the demand for skills such as data analysis, machine learning, and deep learning is rising. Universities should teach these skills to students to equip them with practical abilities. However, most universities only distinguish between IT majors and non-majors, offering the same curriculum to both groups. This approach does not adequately consider students' diverse learning backgrounds and levels, leading to various problems and difficulties in course content and teaching methods. To address these issues, it is crucial to consider students' diversity and provide them with the autonomy to choose courses that match their levels and interests. This selective, level-based learning approach is expected to result in high satisfaction with AI-related courses, regardless of prior AI learning experience. In this study, we proposed a revised AI liberal arts curriculum comprising three detailed courses: AI and Data Foundations, AI and Machine Learning, and AI Development and Practice. This redesigned curriculum allows students to choose personalized learning pathways and implements an Engaged Learning (EL) model. The study analyzed satisfaction levels regarding course content, evaluation methods, and the EL model by dividing students into two groups based on their prior AI learning experience. The findings confirmed that allowing students to select courses aligned with their levels and interests is more important than their prior AI knowledge. Additionally, implementing the Engaged Learning model proved effective for course delivery. This level-based AI liberal arts curriculum is expected to be extended and applied to other academic subjects as well.

The article, based on a mythopoetic approach, examines several lines of wines from the Alma Valley producer. The authors do a lot of work to identify the mythopoetic elements of the Alma terroir from Antiquity to the nineteenth century, from Scythian settlements to the Battle of Alma. Thus, they consider it possible to give a high mythopoetic assessment of the “Scythian Gold” wine series. But the authors also note a number of inconsistencies between this wine branding and its type. It is proposed to strengthen the historical and mythological component of the brand, more clearly drawing the lines of relationship between the character of the wine and the label design, grape variety and the general idea of the series. Analyzing the series of wines “Seasons” (PIN AP), the authors emphasize the exceptional success of positioning the product in the gender and age segment of the consumer market but conclude that this move cannot be the main one for the philosophy of Alma Valley wines. Particular attention was paid to the “Alma.X” series and the search for the most appropriate mythopoetic line for the original wines, which are the result of bold experiments by Alma Valley specialists. Alma Valley.

Dimension Reduction of Generalized ASD Instantons

Dylan Galt, Langte Ma

We study generalized anti-self-dual instantons defined over Riemannian manifolds equipped with a parallel codimension-$4$ differential form. In particular, for product Riemannian manifolds possessing such a form, we study dimension reduction phenomena, finding a topological criterion for bundles which, when satisfied, allows for a complete characterization of dimension reduction for the corresponding moduli space of generalized ASD instantons. By establishing an integrability result for families of connections, we then deduce explicit descriptions for these moduli spaces, including those of Hermitian Yang--Mills connections, $G_2$-, and $\Spin(7)$-instantons. When one factor in the product is a $4$-manifold, we establish well-behaved compactifications for these moduli spaces.

Exploring Bridges Between Algorithmic and AI-generated Art

Jiaqi Wu, Eytan Adar

In this paper, we bridge algorithmic and AI art by adding functionality to the creative coding environment. We create two systems that demonstrate how AI features can enhance algorithmic art and, conversely, how AI art can be styled based on algorithmically-generated artifacts. The first library, GenP5, extends p5.js to allow the artist to apply diffusion models to style and 'condition' their algorithmically-constructed art. The second, P52Style, can learn the 'style' of an algorithmically generated artifact and apply that when creating new AI art.

Melon Fruit Detection and Quality Assessment Using Generative AI-Based Image Data Augmentation

Seungri Yoon, Yunseong Cho, Tae In Ahn

Monitoring and managing the growth and quality of fruits are very important tasks. To effectively train deep learning models like YOLO for real-time fruit detection, high-quality image datasets are essential. However, such datasets are often lacking in agriculture. Generative AI models can help create high-quality images. In this study, we used MidJourney and Firefly tools to generate images of melon greenhouses and post-harvest fruits through text-to-image, pre-harvest image-to-image, and post-harvest image-to-image methods. We evaluated these AIgenerated images using PSNR and SSIM metrics and tested the detection performance of the YOLOv9 model. We also assessed the net quality of real and generated fruits. Our results showed that generative AI could produce images very similar to real ones, especially for post-harvest fruits. The YOLOv9 model detected the generated images well, and the net quality was also measurable. This shows that generative AI can create realistic images useful for fruit detection and quality assessment, indicating its great potential in agriculture. This study highlights the potential of AI-generated images for data augmentation in melon fruit detection and quality assessment and envisions a positive future for generative AI applications in agriculture.

AKN_Regie: a bridge between digital and performing arts

Georges Gagneré

In parallel with the dissemination of information technology, we note the persistence of frontiers within creative practices, in particular between the digital arts and the performing arts. Crossings of these frontiers brought to light the need for a common appropriation of digital issues. As a result of this appropriation, the AvatarStaging platform and its software dimension AKN_Regie will be described in their use to direct avatars on a mixed theatre stage. Developed with the Blueprint visual language within Epic Games' Unreal Engine, AKN_Regie offers a user interface accessible to non-programming artists. This feature will be used to describe two perspectives of appropriation of the tool: the Plugin perspective for these users and the Blueprint perspective for programming artists who want to improve the tool. These two perspectives are then completed by a C++ perspective that aligns AKN_Regie with the language with which the engine itself is programmed. The circulations between these three perspectives are finally studied by drawing on work on the ecology of collective intelligence.

Diffusion idea exploration for art generation

Nikhil Verma

Cross-Modal learning tasks have picked up pace in recent times. With plethora of applications in diverse areas, generation of novel content using multiple modalities of data has remained a challenging problem. To address the same, various generative modelling techniques have been proposed for specific tasks. Novel and creative image generation is one important aspect for industrial application which could help as an arm for novel content generation. Techniques proposed previously used Generative Adversarial Network(GAN), autoregressive models and Variational Autoencoders (VAE) for accomplishing similar tasks. These approaches are limited in their capability to produce images guided by either text instructions or rough sketch images decreasing the overall performance of image generator. We used state of the art diffusion models to generate creative art by primarily leveraging text with additional support of rough sketches. Diffusion starts with a pattern of random dots and slowly converts that pattern into a design image using the guiding information fed into the model. Diffusion models have recently outperformed other generative models in image generation tasks using cross modal data as guiding information. The initial experiments for this task of novel image generation demonstrated promising qualitative results.

A Qualitative Study on the Process of Changing Multicultural Perceptions of College Students Participating in Role-playing Oriented Liberal Arts Classes

Huijin Mun, Youngsoon kIM, Xiaohan Sun

The purpose of this study is to explore the process of changing multicultural perceptions of college students who participated in liberal arts classes using role-playing, and to present multicultural education measures in higher education institutions. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with five college students who participated in liberal arts classes, and these were analyzed using phenomenological research methods. As a result, first, the participants stated that they were “indifferent” or had “uncomfortable feelings” about multiculturalism due to a lack of direct experience with migrants. Second, college students came to understand and respect others through the multicultural role-playing process. Third, research participants came to think about the attitudes they should have in a multicultural society in the future during their liberal arts class. This has led to changes in the perceptions of all people interacting in a multicultural society, regarding both their perceptions and attitudes.Based on these results, this study presented future multicultural education plans as follows. First, multicultural education should begin with content that can lead to “various levels of cultural curiosity” among the learners. This plays a role in relieving the indifferent or uncomfortable emotions that learners have. Second, before the role-playing activities, education that can help students better understand other cultures should be prioritized. This can reduce the difficulties students face when it comes to ‘cultural differences’ and ‘language barriers’ (communication) when learners write their role play scripts. Finally, multicultural education should be developed as a long-term curriculum rather than a one-off, and should be conducted to improve mutual cultural capabilities by engaging in “cultural exchange activities,” including the involvement of the migrants' language, culture, experiences, and values. This can help students internalize their necessary multicultural awareness on a long-term basis. It can also be a way for them to understand their foreign counterparts more deeply by providing opportunities for mutual cultural communication with them. Through this study, we looked at the process of changing college students' multicultural perception. It is hoped that this study will serve as useful basic data for the progress of multicultural education that can promote multicultural awareness for college students as well as for other learners.

High prevalence of reduced fertility and use of assisted reproductive technology in a German cohort of patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy

T. Pfeffer, Manuel List, C. Schippert et al.

Background Over the past decades the use of assisted reproduction technology (ART) increased worldwide. ARTs are associated with an elevated risk for cardiovascular complications. However, a potential relation between subfertility/ARTs and the heart disease peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) has not been systematically analyzed yet. Methods A retrospective cohort study was carried out, including n  = 111 PPCM patients from the German PPCM registry. Data from PPCM patients were compared to those from postpartum women in the German general population. Results The prevalence of reported subfertility was high among PPCM patients (30%; 33/111). Most of the subfertile PPCM patients (55%; 18/33) obtained vitro fertilizations (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injections (ICSI). PPCM patients were older ( p  < 0.0001), the percentage of born infants conceived by IVF/ICSI was higher ( p  < 0.0001) with a higher multiple birth ( p  < 0.0001), C-section ( p  < 0.0001) and preeclampsia rate ( p  < 0.0001), compared to postpartum women. The cardiac outcome was comparable between subfertile and fertile PPCM patients. Whole exome sequencing in a subset of n  = 15 subfertile PPCM patients revealed that 33% (5/15) carried pathogenic or likely pathogenic gene variants associated with cardiomyopathies and/or cancer predisposition syndrome. Conclusions Subfertility occurred frequently among PPCM patients and was associated with increased age, hormonal disorders, higher twin pregnancy rate and high prevalence of pathogenic gene variants suggesting a causal relationship between subfertility and PPCM. Although this study found no evidence that the ART treatment per se increases the risk for PPCM or the risk for an adverse outcome, women with subfertility should be closely monitored for signs of peripartum heart failure. Rüzgârda Salınan Nilüfer ve Albüm Filmlerinde Orta Sınıf Eleştirisi

Ulaş Can Olgunsoy

Core and Periphery as Closed-System Precepts for Engineering General Intelligence

Tyler Cody, Niloofar Shadab, Alejandro Salado et al.

Engineering methods are centered around traditional notions of decomposition and recomposition that rely on partitioning the inputs and outputs of components to allow for component-level properties to hold after their composition. In artificial intelligence (AI), however, systems are often expected to influence their environments, and, by way of their environments, to influence themselves. Thus, it is unclear if an AI system's inputs will be independent of its outputs, and, therefore, if AI systems can be treated as traditional components. This paper posits that engineering general intelligence requires new general systems precepts, termed the core and periphery, and explores their theoretical uses. The new precepts are elaborated using abstract systems theory and the Law of Requisite Variety. By using the presented material, engineers can better understand the general character of regulating the outcomes of AI to achieve stakeholder needs and how the general systems nature of embodiment challenges traditional engineering practice.

DC-Art-GAN: Stable Procedural Content Generation using DC-GANs for Digital Art

Rohit Gandikota, Nik Bear Brown

Art is an artistic method of using digital technologies as a part of the generative or creative process. With the advent of digital currency and NFTs (Non-Fungible Token), the demand for digital art is growing aggressively. In this manuscript, we advocate the concept of using deep generative networks with adversarial training for a stable and variant art generation. The work mainly focuses on using the Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (DC-GAN) and explores the techniques to address the common pitfalls in GAN training. We compare various architectures and designs of DC-GANs to arrive at a recommendable design choice for a stable and realistic generation. The main focus of the work is to generate realistic images that do not exist in reality but are synthesised from random noise by the proposed model. We provide visual results of generated animal face images (some pieces of evidence showing a blend of species) along with recommendations for training, architecture and design choices. We also show how training image preprocessing plays a massive role in GAN training.

Deep Learning-based Assessment of Hepatic Steatosis on chest CT

Zhongyi Zhang, Jakob Weiss, Jana Taron et al.

Purpose: Automatic methods are required for the early detection of hepatic steatosis to avoid progression to cirrhosis and cancer. Here, we developed a fully automated deep learning pipeline to quantify hepatic steatosis on non-contrast enhanced chest computed tomography (CT) scans. Materials and Methods: We developed and evaluated our pipeline on chest CT images of 1,431 randomly selected National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) participants. A dataset of 451 CT scans with volumetric liver segmentations of expert readers was used for training a deep learning model. For testing, in an independent dataset of 980 CT scans hepatic attenuation was manually measured by an expert reader on three cross-sectional images at different hepatic levels by selecting three circular regions of interest. Additionally, 100 randomly selected cases of the test set were volumetrically segmented by expert readers. Hepatic steatosis on the test set was defined as mean hepatic attenuation of < 40 Hounsfield unit. Spearman correlation was conducted to analyze liver fat quantification accuracy and the Cohen's Kappa coefficient was calculated for hepatic steatosis prediction reliability. Results: Our pipeline demonstrated strong performance and achieved a mean dice score of 0.970 for the volumetric liver segmentation. The spearman correlation of the liver fat quantification was 0.954 (P <0.0001) between the automated and expert reader measurements. The cohen's kappa coefficient was 0.875 for automatic assessment of hepatic steatosis. Conclusion: We developed a fully automatic deep learning-based pipeline for the assessment of hepatic steatosis in chest CT images. With the fast and cheap screening of hepatic steatosis, our pipeline has the potential to help initiate preventive measures to avoid progression to cirrhosis and cancer.
