Geographically induced and the spatially differentiated dimension of flood vulnerability in Greater Kumasi Metropolis, Ghana

Anthony Kwabena Sarfo, Ebenezer Owusu-Sekyere, Alfred Toku et al.

Over the past several years, the constant flooding events and their lethal consequences have reignited the debate on the need for vulnerability assessment of flood-prone communities in urban areas as a flood risk mitigation and adaptation measure. This article focuses on Ghana and uses remotely sensed high-resolution data, and community mapping to assess the flood vulnerability of 442 urban communities of the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area (GKMA). The Compound Topographic Index and the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission were used systematically. The results showed that 43% of communities were found in low-risk areas, 30% were in medium-risk areas, and 27% were in high-risk areas. Flood intensity and frequencies were found to be dependent on location relative to slopes and undulating terrain. We argue that the identified flood hazard communities should guide policymakers in proffering specific and targeted interventions toward flood risk reduction and community resilience strategies

Penerapan Konsep Arsitektur Regionalisme pada Bangunan Kampus Universitas Medan Area

Peranita Sagala, Yendi Jhon Frijal Situmorang, Donald Pardede

Indonesia has a distinctive array of architectural styles. Architecture that is rooted in regionalism offers a platform for the revival of traditional design elements in modern structures. One of North Sumatra's first private campuses is that of Medan Area University. The architecture and culture in this region are extremely varied. There is no prevailing architectural style like there is in Riau, West Sumatra, or Java. This campus uses conventional architecture in its construction as it is a university with an architectural study program. The scope of the use of regional architecture on a multicultural campus environment is investigated in this study. Several regional architectural applications have been made using the technique of observation and research of traditional architectural theories of the tribes living in North Sumatra.

Assessing Food Security Scenario at the Ward Level in Nepal: An Analysis of Caloric Needs from Diverse Crops Based on Location-Specific Factors and Policy Implications

Keshav Bhattarai, Shiva Prasad Gautam, Buddhi Raj Gyawali

Food security means access to food along with food production and availability to every individual at a reasonable cost according to the calorific needs of people. To assure food safety to 30 million Nepali people, it is essential to utilize every piece of available farmable land in each geographic region of seven provinces. We analyzed individual household food intake, dietary energy adequacy, and nutritional status and needs at the ward level of Nepal. We used a decadal (2010-2020) average food production of different crops per unit of farmable area, and food needs for people living in that ward based on their gender and nutritional requirements to perform various activities in different geographic regions of seven provinces. We assumed three food consumption scenarios: a) traditional practices of meeting dietary needs only from major crops; b) consuming major and minor crops; and c) consuming major and minor crops and meat and fruit products. Our analysis revealed that it is essential for Nepal to implement policies that will encourage crop diversification comprising both major and minor crops and inform the public about the nutritional values of various crops that can be grown utilizing location-specific environments in different geographic regions of seven provinces. Our findings assist in policy instrumentation that will pursue farming communities to supplement their dietary needs with diverse crop products and suggest government set aside some matching funds to encourage remitters, who return to Nepal with knowledge and financial resources, to engage in agriculture. We also argue that crop diversification is needed to assure farm productivity if certain crops fail due to unforeseen environmental calamities.

Nature-inclusive urban development: lessons learned in three real estate projects in Dutch cities

Thomas J.M. Mattijssen, Marijke W.C. Dijkshoorn-Dekker, Harry J.M. Kortstee et al.

An increasing number of real estate actors appear to be searching for ways to incorporate nature and biodiversity in urban development projects. In this article, we study three Dutch urban development projects with high biodiversity ambitions in order to learn how they came to fruition. We combine transition theory with practice theory and identify key barriers and drivers on the basis of these approaches. We highlight that incorporating biodiversity in urban development projects requires considerable knowledge development, implies a higher entrepreneurial risk and asks for various pragmatic solutions to overcome barriers. We identify four key recommendations for promoting nature-inclusive urban development: (1) facilitate knowledge development and exchange; (2) incorporate and reward biodiversity in environmental certification schemes and tender criteria; (3) translate a strategic vision on biodiversity into concrete regulations to bridge the policy implementation gap; (4) stimulate the uptake of nature-inclusive urban development in corporate visions.

From Urban Vulnerabilities to Resilience: Lessons from Messina's Integrated Risk Approach

Giovanna Ferramosca, Anna Terracciano

In the city of Messina, the multiplicity of vulnerable situations is a distinctive feature and is representative of the pervasiveness of the risk conditions present in the Italian territory. The critical residential tissues are part of an extended geography in which, to the conditions of seismic and hydro geomorphological vulnerability, are added additional criticalities including altered natural resources, abandoned infrastructure, brownfields, quarries, and unregulated landfills, etc. Despite this, for Messina, there is still no urban planning tool capable of interpreting in an integrated way the risks present, which instead continue to be addressed on an emergency basis and individually, without considering the interactions that are generated and of further damage. For these reasons, Messina was chosen as a prototypical case study, at the national level, to start an experimentation aimed at developing an urban planning tool capable of a new integrated approach to risk interpretation and management. In this process, a decisive role was aimed at building an updated knowledge of the territory through the identification of widespread critical conditions using multiple GIS tools and thanks to the interaction of some analytical-specialist readings from different sources. The results of this process are represented in a system of maps that are strongly integrated with each other and constitute a working document for the interdisciplinary group drafting the General Urban Plan.

Forecast of water consumption in Serbia: ARIMA modeling

Gazdić Danilo, Nikolić Srboljub

Water is a symbol of life. Along with air and food, water is a basic existential need. These facts begin to act more strongly on people's opinion and behavior only when he faced with water supply problems. The question is, how to produce more food in these times of growing need for it, while water resources are limited. The Republic of Serbia has a very significant water capacity. Estimation shows that renewable freshwater resources in Serbia are round 55877.93 million of m 3 /per year (Eurostat, 2020). However, water consumption in Serbia is constantly growing, while population is slightly decreasing, which arise the need for time series analysis of water consumption as a tool for future forecast of water consumption.

Simulating the effects of redesigned street-scale built environments on access/egress pedestrian flows to metro stations

Yanan Liu, Dujuan Yang, H. Timmermans et al.

In urban renewal processes, metro line systems are widely used to accommodate the massive traffic needs and stimulate the redevelopment of the local area. The route choice of pedestrians, emanating from or going to the metro stations, is influenced by the street-scale built environment. Many renewal processes involve the improvement of the street-level built environment and thus influence pedestrian flows. To assess the effects of urban design on pedestrian flows, this article presents the results of a simulation model of pedestrian route choice behavior around Yingkoudao metro station in the city center of Tianjin, China. Simulated pedestrian flows based on 4 scenarios of changes in street-scale built environment characteristics are compared. Results indicate that the main streets are disproportionally more affected than smaller streets. The promotion of an intensified land use mix does not lead to a high increase in the number of pedestrians who choose the involved route when traveling from/to the metro station, assuming fixed destination choice.

‘Urban expansion and agricultural land use change in Ghana: Implications for peri-urban farmer household food security in Wa Municipality’

Samuel Ziem Bonye, Gordon Yenglier Yiridomoh, Emmanuel K. Derbile

Food price hikes globally re-energised investment in innovative strategies of food production including urban and peri-urban agriculture. Unfortunately, uncontrolled urbanisation have impacted gravely on food production in peri-urban areas in developing countries. This study was conducted in the Wa Municipalityto examine how peri-urban agricultural land use change impact on food security of farmers. A mixed methods study of inquiry with 235 smallholder farmers were used for the study. Questionnaires, interviews and historical information captured using the Geographic Information System (GIS) were used to collect the data. The results revealed that, hectares of agricultural land in peri-urban Wa over the last three decades has drastically lost its space to urban development through residentuial and infrastructural development. The study also found that agricultural land use change has resulted in food insecurity as the majority of the smallholder farmers were unable to meet their food needs over the last decade. The practical and policy implication of the study are discussed.

Roles of Drop-in Centers in Street Children Interventions: Design Guidelines and Humanitarian Emergency Architecture Adaptations

Ruba Azzam, Karim Kesseiba, Ahmed AbdelGhaffar et al.

For decades, numerous countries have been witnessing the Street Children phenomenon where millions of children worldwide are subjected to risks. Despite the crucial role of intermediate non-residential interventions - using drop-in centers- in protecting and rehabilitating street children, there is a paucity of research addressing the quality of design of these centers and how architecture might influence their operational process. Those observations invite investigating drop-in centers used in practice from a design perspective and question adapting architectural applications for humanitarian emergencies, focusing on “Child-Friendly Spaces”. The study aims to provide solutions for better quality design, facilitating operational challenges. The methodology undertakes the investigation through primary and secondary axes. This involves conducting literature and international precedents review and secondarily, an Egyptian contextual first-hand documentation and qualitative analysis of selected centers.

Queering Growth in Mid-20th Century Philadelphia

J. T. Roane

In this essay, I highlight a critical, if under-examined, dialectic between dominant urbanism and Black queer urbanism. First, I demonstrate the ways that dominant urbanists drew on a sedimented historical imaginary of the slum as a racialized site of debilitation and death in their articulation of and support for new urban infrastructures designed to support long-term stability through capitalist growth. Anti-blackness formed a fundamental aspect of the syntax and grammar of urban renewal and redevelopment. Next, I examine the efforts of the adherents of Father Divine’s Peace Mission Movement to build a world centered in spiritually appropriated, communal architectures wherein their disruptive forms of social-geographic life challenged heteronormative futurity and segregation through the haptic politics of touch and what I term ecstatic consecration.

Management of Tehran Metropolis Growth Based on Smart Growth Index (SGI): Application of 4D Technique in Estimating Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT)

Mahmood Shoorcheh

One of the most important issues in the cities is their overgrowth into metropolises. This increasing growth can often be associated with many environmental, socio-cultural, and economic-political effects and consequences. One of the most effective approaches to deal with this issue would be "urban growth management". Over the past few decades, Urban Growth Management (UGM) as a practical strategy has tried through some approaches, policies, and plans to guide the metropolitan growth process in a more sustainable and smart direction. One of the most important and practical models in quantitative estimation of urban growth conditions has been the "Smart Growth Index" (SGI) which has used a variety of techniques, including the "4D" technique. With reference to such a theoretical and technical background, this article has analyzed the metropolis of Tehran based on some smart growth indexes and in the framework of the urban growth management approach. The results obtained in this article have shown that a positive intervention in the condition of density, diversity, design, and accessibility in land use-transportation interactions can have a significant effect on the vehicle miles traveled (VMT), and thus reduce the mobilities and controlling urban growth in Tehran mega-polis region.

Movimentos, Tecnologia e Pessoas Negras: é possível um outro turismo?

Michel Alves Ferreira, Lindamir Salete Casagrande
