Vehicle-to-Everything: Looking into the Future of Flexibility Services

Omid Homaee, Chaimaa Essayeh, Vahid Vahidinasab et al.

The primary aim of this paper is to illuminate potential Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) flexibility services that can be activated at the three levels of home, community, and grid. To do this, the potential practical services that can be provided by EVs, flexibility requesters, and the required exchange mechanisms at these three levels are identified. At the home level, the two main services that EVs can provide to households are explored. The initial service focuses on cost reduction for homes by employing smart charging and discharging methods, and the second service underscores the capability of an EV equipped with bidirectional chargers to function as a backup resource during grid outages. At the community level, three flexibility services are introduced and outlined: community cost reduction, energy sharing, and backup resources. There is more than one flexibility requester, including the community manager, EV owners, and other end users. Accordingly, at this level, having a fair and transparent market mechanism can optimise the activation of different V2X flexibility services. At the grid level, flexibility providers can offer two main flexibility services, namely load profile adjustment and real-time voltage and frequency control, to a wide range of flexibility requesters, including distribution network/systems operators (DNOs/DSOs) to overcome technical challenges of the distribution network, energy suppliers to manage their energy portfolio, and TSOs to support transmission network. In addition, a review of trial V2X projects and V2X supporting regulations is presented to contextualize the feasibility and regulatory framework for implementing these services. This analysis offers insights into the challenges and opportunities that need to be addressed for the effective integration of V2X flexibility services across the three identified levels.

The Effects of Short Video-Sharing Services on Video Copy Detection

Rintaro Yanagi, Yamato Okamoto, Shuhei Yokoo et al.

The short video-sharing services that allow users to post 10-30 second videos (e.g., YouTube Shorts and TikTok) have attracted a lot of attention in recent years. However, conventional video copy detection (VCD) methods mainly focus on general video-sharing services (e.g., YouTube and Bilibili), and the effects of short video-sharing services on video copy detection are still unclear. Considering that illegally copied videos in short video-sharing services have service-distinctive characteristics, especially in those time lengths, the pros and cons of VCD in those services are required to be analyzed. In this paper, we examine the effects of short video-sharing services on VCD by constructing a dataset that has short video-sharing service characteristics. Our novel dataset is automatically constructed from the publicly available dataset to have reference videos and fixed short-time-length query videos, and such automation procedures assure the reproducibility and data privacy preservation of this paper. From the experimental results focusing on segment-level and video-level situations, we can see that three effects: "Segment-level VCD in short video-sharing services is more difficult than those in general video-sharing services", "Video-level VCD in short video-sharing services is easier than those in general video-sharing services", "The video alignment component mainly suppress the detection performance in short video-sharing services".

Identity Dynamics in Collegiate Olympic Athletes Post-Tokyo 2020: A Pre-Post Study

Grace Kazmierski-Davie, Khalid Ballouli

This study employs a pre-post survey design, engaging a purposive-convenience sample of 94 U.S. college athletes who participated in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics across eight sports and 22 countries. Utilizing validated scales, participants’ group, national, and athletic identities were measured weeks before and after the event. Paired sample t-tests and a repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance were utilized to understand the effects of time and demographic variables on these identities. Results revealed that after competing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, college athletes exhibited a significant decrease in their group identity and a significant increase in their national identity, while their athletic identity remained relatively unchanged. The results were qualified by student status interactions such that international students showed a significant decrease in group identity and a significant increase in national identity after competing in Tokyo 2020, with no significant changes observed in these identities for domestic students. The results illuminate a complex process of identity negotiation experienced by collegiate Olympic athletes that transition between Olympic and college sport environments. This study contributes to sport management literature by offering nuanced insights into the dynamics of role-switching, urging stakeholders to utilize these findings to enhance the experiences of college athletes.

Probabilistic Quality of Service aware Service Selection

Agustín E. Martinez Suñé, Carlos G. Lopez Pombo

In software-as-a-service paradigms software systems are no longer monolithic pieces of code executing within the boundaries of an organisation, on the contrary, they are conceived as a dynamically changing collection of services, collectively executing, in pursuit of a common business goal. An essential aspect of service selection is determining whether the Quality of Service (QoS) profile of a service satisfies the QoS requirements of a client. In realistic execution environments, such QoS values might be influenced by external, non-controllable events, making it impossible for the service provider to guarantee that the values characterised by a QoS profile will be met, naturally leading to the need of a probabilistic interpretation of QoS profile. In this work we propose: 1) a model for describing probabilistic QoS profiles based on multivariate continuous probability distributions, 2) a language for describing probabilistic QoS requirements, and 3) an automatic procedure for assessing whether a probabilistic QoS profile satisfies a probabilistic QoS requirement.

On Optimizing Shared-ride Mobility Services with Walking Legs

Zifan Wang, Michael F Hyland, Younghun Bahk et al.

Shared-ride mobility services that incorporate traveler walking legs aim to reduce vehicle-kilometers-travelled (VKT), vehicle-hours-travelled (VHT), request rejections, fleet size, or some combination of these factors, compared to door-to-door (D2D) shared-ride services. This paper provides a review of shared-ride services with walking legs (SRSWL), particularly the studies in the literature that model the operational problem(s) associated with SRSWL. The paper describes the operational and societal benefits of SRSWL as well as compares the SRSWL to circuitous D2D shared-ride services, ride-hailing services, and fixed-route transit services, in terms of VKT and traveler walking distance. The paper then delineates the operational subproblems associated with the SRSWL and discusses their computational complexity. Additionally, the review classifies configurations of SRSWL based on flexibility in assigning travelers to pickup and drop-off locations. The paper also discusses four modelling challenge: short-distance person trips, drop-off location choice for a vehicle's last remaining passenger, allowing vehicles to wait for travelers at pickup locations, and simultaneously reducing VHT/VKT and improving customer service quality relative to D2D shared-ride services. The review paper concludes by discussing the most critical areas of future research related to SRSWL.

From Service Quality to E-Service Quality: Measurement, Dimensions and Model

Salome O. Ighomereho, Afolabi A. Ojo, Samuel O. Omoyele et al.

With the global increase in online services, there is a paradigm shift from service quality to e-service quality. In order to sustain this strategic change, there is need to measure and evaluate the quality of e-services. Consequently, the paper seeks to determine the relevant e-service quality dimensions for e-channels. The aim is to generate a concise set of dimensions that managers can use to measure e-service quality. The paper proposed an e-service quality model comprising seven e-service quality dimensions (website appearance, ease of use, reliability, security, personalisation, fulfilment and responsiveness) and overall e-service quality. The study employed a cross-sectional research design and quantitative research approach. The data were collected via a questionnaire from 400 e-channel users in Lagos State, Nigeria. However, 318 copies of the questionnaire were found useful. The data were analysed using mean, frequency, percentages, correlation and multiple regression analysis. The results revealed that the relevant e-service quality dimensions influencing overall e-service quality are reliability, security, fulfilment, ease of use and responsiveness. These e-service quality dimensions are expected to provide information for managers to evaluate and improve their e-channel service delivery.

Dynamically meeting performance objectives for multiple services on a service mesh

Forough Shahab Samani, Rolf Stadler

We present a framework that lets a service provider achieve end-to-end management objectives under varying load. Dynamic control actions are performed by a reinforcement learning (RL) agent. Our work includes experimentation and evaluation on a laboratory testbed where we have implemented basic information services on a service mesh supported by the Istio and Kubernetes platforms. We investigate different management objectives that include end-to-end delay bounds on service requests, throughput objectives, and service differentiation. These objectives are mapped onto reward functions that an RL agent learns to optimize, by executing control actions, namely, request routing and request blocking. We compute the control policies not on the testbed, but in a simulator, which speeds up the learning process by orders of magnitude. In our approach, the system model is learned on the testbed; it is then used to instantiate the simulator, which produces near-optimal control policies for various management objectives. The learned policies are then evaluated on the testbed using unseen load patterns.

Tourists' attitudes toward green product buying behaviors: The role of demographic variables

yeliz Pekersen , Fatma Canöz

Green products do not harm the environment or natural resources and support recycling. Due to tourists having different demographic characteristics, their demands and needs differ, and therefore their thoughts on green products also vary. Therefore, this study focuses on tourists' green product buying behaviours. In this context, the research aims to determine whether tourists' green product buying behaviours differ concerning demographic variables. The survey form prepared for this purpose was applied to 418 tourists visiting Istanbul. As a result of the research, foreign tourists' demographic variables were determined to affect their green product buying behaviours, with factors other than marital status and income level not contributing to tourists' environmental product preferences or their environmental sensitivity. Research has found that single tourists are more sensitive to the environment than married tourists. In addition, economically strong individuals were determined to be willing to pay more money for green products if they had sufficient purchasing power.

Slicing-Based AI Service Provisioning on Network Edge

Mushu Li, Jie Gao, Conghao Zhou et al.

Edge intelligence leverages computing resources on network edge to provide artificial intelligence (AI) services close to network users. As it enables fast inference and distributed learning, edge intelligence is envisioned to be an important component of 6G networks. In this article, we investigate AI service provisioning for supporting edge intelligence. First, we present the features and requirements of AI services. Then, we introduce AI service data management, and customize network slicing for AI services. Specifically, we propose a novel resource pooling method to jointly manage service data and network resources for AI services. A trace-driven case study demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed resource pooling method. Through this study, we illustrate the necessity, challenge, and potential of AI service provisioning on network edge.

Quantifying the efficacy of childcare services on women employment

Jing-Yi Liao, Ying Kong, Tao Zhou

Women are set back in the labor market after becoming mother. Intuitively, childcare services are able to promote women employment as they may reconciliate the motherhood penalty. However, most known studies concentrated on the effects of childcare services on fertility rate, instead of quantitative analyses about the effects on women employment. Using worldwide panel data and Chinese data at province level, this paper unfolds the quantitative relationship between childcare services and women employment, that is, the attendance rate of childcare services is positively correlated with the relative employment rate of women to men. Further analysis suggests that such a positive impact may largely resulted from breaking the vulnerable employment dilemma.

Functional preparedness of women of the first period of mature age under the influence of aquafitness training

V.M. Miroshnichenko, O. Yu. Brezdeniuk, V.V. Holovkina et al.

Purpose: to identify the features of the impact of aquafitness training on aerobic and anaerobic productivity of women 25-35 years. Material and methods: The study involved women aged 25-35 in the number of 41 people. For 24 weeks, the subjects were training in an aquafitness program. Training sessions of aquafitness were aerobic and strength. Anaerobic alactate productivity of the organism was determined by the Wingate anaerobic test WAnT 10. Anaerobic lactate productivity of the organism was determined by the Wingate anaerobic test WAnT 30 and bicycle ergometric test by the method of A. Shogy, G. Cherebetin. The threshold of anaerobic metabolism was determined by bicycle ergometric test F. Conconi et al. in the modification of  Yu.M. Furman. The aerobic productivity of the organism was investigated according to the Vo2 max index determined by the method of V.L. Karpman. Absolute and relative indicators were determined for all tests. Results: Aquafitness is an effective means of correcting the indicators of functional preparedness. The combination of strength and aerobic training in the aquafitness program provides an increase in aerobic productivity, anaerobic lactatic productivity and anaerobic alactatic productivity. Under the influence of training according to the aquafitness program, an increase in all indicators of functional preparedness was revealed. The power of anaerobic alactate productivity of the organism determined by the relative indicator WAnT 10 increased with a statistically significant difference on the level (t = 5.07; p = 0.000). The power of anaerobic lactate productivity of the organism determined by the relative indicator WAnT 30 increased with a statistically significant difference on the level (t=4,68; p=0,000). The power of aerobic productivity of the organism determined by the relative indicator VO2 max increased with a statistically significant difference on the level (t=2,77; p=0,007). Conclusions: Aquafitness is an effective means of correcting the indicators of functional preparedness. The combination of strength and aerobic training in the aquafitness program provides an increase in aerobic productivity, anaerobic lactatic productivity and anaerobic alactatic productivity.

Oblivious Location-Based Service Query

Jinguang Han

Privacy-preserving location-base services (LBS) have been proposed to protect users' location privacy. However, there are still some problems in existing schemes: (1) a semi-trusted third party (TTP) is required; or (2) both the computation cost and communication cost to generate a query are linear in the size of the queried area. In this paper, to improve query efficiency, an oblivious location-based service query (OLBSQ) scheme is proposed. Our scheme captures the following features: (1) a semi-trusted TTP is not required; (2) a user can query services from a service provider without revealing her exact location; (3) the service provider can only know the size of a query made by a user; and (4) both the computation cost and the communication cost to generate a query is constant, instead of linear in the size of the queried area. We formalise the definition and security model of OLBSQ schemes. The security of our scheme is reduced to well-known complexity assumptions. The novelty is to reduce the computation cost and communication cost of making a query and enable the service provider to obliviously and incrementally generate decrypt keys for queried services. This contributes to the growing work of formalising privacy-preserving LBS schemes and improving query efficiency.

Влияние миофасциальных кинематических цепей голени на развитие плоскостопия у детей 7-14 лет

A. Danyschuk

Capital structure of Portuguese hotel firms: a structural equation modelling approach

Fernanda Matias, Leonor Salsa, Carlos Miguel Afonso

This paper addresses capital structure determinants for Portuguese hotel firms between 2006 and 2014. Secondary data from 356 hotel units was analysed using the partial least squares (PLS) statistical technique, a variance-based structural equation modelling (SEM). The results show that the explanatory variables proposed as capital structure determinants have an impact on the financing and debt decisions made by the firms in the sample. Of these, tangibility has the greater explanatory power. Overall, the results support the notion that trade-off theory and pecking-order theory are important in explaining the capital structure of the Portuguese hotel industry, particularly as regards the agency conflicts triggered by growth opportunities and the preference firms have for internal funding. The results also point to the importance of collateral in accessing credit and the lesser impact of asymmetric information pertaining to tangible asset value and firm size. The results suggest small firms find it difficult to contract loans, which can somewhat limit their growth and performance.

HelPal: A Search System for Mobile Crowd Service

Yao Wu, Tianzhen Wu, Ziyi Xiong et al.

Proliferation of ubiquitous mobile devices makes location based services prevalent. Mobile users are able to volunteer as providers of specific services and in the meanwhile to search these services. For example, drivers may be interested in tracking available nearby users who are willing to help with motor repair or are willing to provide travel directions or first aid. With the diffusion of mobile users, it is necessary to provide scalable means of enabling such users to connect with other nearby users so that they can help each other with specific services. Motivated by these observations, we design and implement a general location based system HelPal for mobile users to provide and enjoy instant service, which is called mobile crowd service. In this demo, we introduce a mobile crowd service system featured with several novel techniques. We sketch the system architecture and illustrate scenarios via several cases. Demonstration shows the user-friendly search interface for users to conveniently find skilled and qualified nearby service providers.

Athletic Ticket Pricing in the Collegiate Environment

Craig A. Morehead, Stephen L. Shapiro, Timothy M. Madden et al.

As pressure mounts for intercollegiate athletic departments to be more selfsufficient, administrators must respond by increasing generated revenues. Despite the importance of ticket sales in this endeavor, however, little is known about the underlying ticket pricing structures and policies used by National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) institutions. Of the limited existing scholarship focused on managerial pricing decisions in the field of sport management, only professional sports settings have been addressed. Given the unique operational differences between professional and intercollegiate sport, this paper is designed to establish a foundation from which to build future research concerning the pricing of college sport tickets. The frameworks of stakeholder theory and institutional theory are proposed to ground future study in an attempt to strengthen our understanding of the process and behavior of price setting in intercollegiate athletics.
