A Crack in the Transnational. Relations Between Diaconal Associations in Nordic Countries During World War II
Elisabeth Christiansson Drake, Helena Inghammar
Abstract This article examines the relationship between diaconal associations in Nordic countries during the period around World War II. It is based on materials from the archive of Diakonissanstalten in Stockholm, including letters to and from the director of Diakonissanstalten as well as protocols of board meetings, and periodicals from Sweden from the same time. The authors investigate the relations of Diakonissanstalten and other Swedish diaconal associations with diaconal associations in Denmark, Finland and Norway during the lead-up to, throughout and in the aftermath of the second World War, asking: To what extent were Nordic diaconal associations able to maintain their relationship during the war? Were the transnational and ideological goals of diaconia challenged by the war? The article finds that the transnational culture that characterized relations between diaconal associations prior to World War II was affected by events during the war but was restored after the end of the war

Mining Town of Kuzbass Prokopyevsk in First Half of 1930s: Problems of Miner’s Everyday Life and Improvement of New City (Local Periodicals)
A. Yu. Karpinets, A. E. Pyanov
The issues related to the everyday life of miners during the formation of the city of Prokopyevsk are being considered. The relevance of the study is determined by scientific interest in the history of daily life. A literature review on the research problem has been conducted. Over a hundred issues of the local newspaper “Zaboy” from the first half of the 1930s were analyzed, along with reference and statistical collections. The social aspects of urban life in Prokopyevsk during the formation of urban infrastructure were studied. Housing issues, urban improvement, and public catering were examined in relation to the professional affiliation of city residents. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that periodical publications allow researchers to explore topics that were previously either uninteresting or not characterized in such detail regarding daily life. The author concludes that each period in history has its specific problems. It is noted that there were difficulties in the 1930s, which were ultimately successfully overcome. The author asserts that certain problems are still observed in modern urban development stages. However, the author is confident that these problems can be successfully resolved with the correct interaction of all levels of the urban community.

The Meaning of the Turkish Maritime for Atatürk and Its Reflections in The Early Republican Period
Funda Songur
The necessity to have the political, military, and economic power to protect its national rights and interests at sea has been one of the critical issues since the establishment of the Turkish state. In Atatürk’s words, the Turks did not accomplish significant naval operations in the era of the modern navy, and this situation revealed the need for a strong Turkish navy. Given that strengthening only the naval force would not be enough, steps were taken to develop theTurkish maritime political, economic, and cultural aspects. In this article, the Turkish maritime in the Early Republican Period is discussed in the light of periodicals, maritime reports, archive documents, and secondary sources. As a result of this study, which aims to evaluate maritime in detail with political, naval, economic, and cultural efforts, the importance attributed to the Turkish maritime under the leadership of Atatürk is examined, and its transformation into a national maritime power is revealed.

Association Among Cognition, Frailty, and Falls and Self‐Reported Incident Fractures: Results From the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA)
Ahreum Lee, Caitlin McArthur, George Ioannidis
et al.
ABSTRACT Cognition, frailty, and falls have been examined independently as potential correlates of fracture risk, but not simultaneously. Our objective was to explore the association between cognition, frailty, and falls and self‐reported incident fractures to determine if these factors show significant independent associations or interactions. We included participants who completed the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) 2012–2015 baseline comprehensive assessment, did not experience any self‐reported fractures in the year prior to cohort recruitment, and completed the follow‐up questionnaire at year 3 (n = 26,982). We compared all baseline cognitive measures available in the CLSA, the Rockwood Frailty Index (FI), and presence of self‐reported falls in the past 12 months in those with versus without self‐reported incident fractures in year 3 of follow‐up. We used multivariable logistic regression adjusted for covariates and examined two‐way interactions between cognition, frailty, and prior falls. CLSA specified analytic weights were applied. The mean ± standard error (SE) age of participants was 59.5 ± 0.1 years and 52.2% were female. A total of 715 participants (2.7%) self‐reported incident fractures at 3‐year follow‐up. Participants who experienced incident fractures had similar baseline cognition scores (mean ± SE; Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test [RAVLT]: Immediate recall 6.1 ± 0.1 versus 5.9 ± 0.0; standardized difference [d] 0.124); higher FI scores (mean ± SE; FI 0.134 ± 0.005 versus 0.116 ± 0.001; d 0.193), and a greater percentage had fallen in the past 12 months (weighted n [%] 518 [7.2] versus 919 [3.5]; d 0.165). FI (each increment of 0.08) was associated with a significantly increased risk of self‐reported incident fractures in participants of all ages and those aged 65 years or older (adjusted odd ratio [OR] 1.24, 95% confidence limit [CL] 1.10–1.40; adjusted OR 1.44, 95% CL 1.11–1.52, respectively). The adjusted odds for self‐reported incident fractures in participants of all ages was also significantly associated with falls in the past 12 months prior to baseline (adjusted OR 1.83; 95% CL 1.13–2.97), but not in those aged 65 years or older. No interactions between cognition, frailty, and prior falls were found. However, considering the relatively young age of our cohort, it may be appropriate to make strong inferences in individuals older than 65 years of age. © 2022 The Authors. Sex and External Size Specific Limitations in Assessing Bone Health From Adult Hand Radiographs
Erin M.R. Bigelow, Robert W. Goulet, Antonio Ciarelli
et al.
ABSTRACT Morphological parameters measured for the second metacarpal from hand radiographs are used clinically for assessing bone health during growth and aging. Understanding how these morphological parameters relate to metacarpal strength and strength at other anatomical sites is critical for providing informed decision‐making regarding treatment strategies and effectiveness. The goals of this study were to evaluate the extent to which 11 morphological parameters, nine of which were measured from hand radiographs, relate to experimentally measured whole‐bone strength assessed at multiple anatomical sites and to test whether these associations differed between men and women. Bone morphology and strength were assessed for the second and third metacarpals, radial diaphysis, femoral diaphysis, and proximal femur for 28 white male donors (18–89 years old) and 35 white female donors (36–89+ years old). The only morphological parameter to show a significant correlation with strength without a sex‐specific effect was cortical area. Dimensionless morphological parameters derived from hand radiographs correlated significantly with strength for females, but few did for males. Males and females showed a significant association between the circularity of the metacarpal cross‐section and the outer width measured in the mediolateral direction. This cross‐sectional shape variation contributed to systematic bias in estimating strength using cortical area and assuming a circular cross‐section. This was confirmed by the observation that use of elliptical formulas reduced the systematic bias associated with using circular approximations for morphology. Thus, cortical area was the best predictor of strength without a sex‐specific difference in the correlation but was not without limitations owing to out‐of‐plane shape variations. The dependence of cross‐sectional shape on the outer bone width measured from a hand radiograph may provide a way to further improve bone health assessments and informed decision making for optimizing strength‐building and fracture‐prevention treatment strategies. © 2022 The Authors. Peasantry of Southern Russia in 1920s
I. A. Khronova
The question of the attitude of the peasantry to socialist modernization, the relevance of which is due to the fact that historically the south of Russia set one of the general algorithms of scientific search in studying the problems of this area is considered. It is noted that one of these problems is related to the content and organizational components of the peasantry labor activity in the Kuban-Black Sea region and further in the North Caucasus region. It is indicated that these components of activity began to be updated in the light of the policy of the authorities, as well as a number of accepted legal sources. The relevance of this study lies in the research of the foundations of labor relations between the peasantry and the Soviet state, which laid the “foundation” for the subsequent regulation of social and labor legal relations and formed the socialist branch of law — collective farm law. The novelty of the work lies in the analysis of the cumulative factors that accompanied the procedure for the emergence of the socialist foundations of labor in the collective farms of southern Russia in 1920s. The study is based on archival materials, scientific papers and periodicals. Two legal sources are analyzed: the Normal Statute of Agricultural Productive Communes and the Exemplary Statute of an Agricultural Labor Artel. Attention is focused on the transformation of regulatory changes. Conclusions are drawn that manipulations with the peasantry became experimental for future collectivization, revealed the illiteracy of the peasants, and also made it possible to lay the foundation for collective farm law.

I. D. SURGUCHEV PUBLICISM DURING THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION OF 1905 (1905-1906)
A. B. Zamorkin, O. I. Lepilkina
By the examples of publications in Stavropol Social-Political newspaper «Severnii Kavkaz», the article specifies genre-theme specifics of publications of a famous Russian writer and playwright I. D. Sur-guchev in the period of pre-revolutionaty events in Russia of 1905-1906. Based on analysis of published cycles «Dela» (from 20 texts) and «Pisma iz Peterburga» an assumption is made that author was for reformation of government establishment of Russia, welcomed the inception of civic self-consciousness, including provinces, highly graded the role of culture in saving the nation, outlined the achievement of honest periodicals in serving the society. The reference to the form of a cycle allowed Surguchev to include singular negative instance of social practices in broader context, giving a multi-facet view and showing speciic tendencies of societal-political life of Russia. It is defined that the main parts of Surguchev's publicistic style were the construction of mediareality with the help of semantic oppositions and using contrasts, combination of factological accuracy and generalizations, the use of different expressive means and intertextuality. Research of Surguchev's texts, published in «Severnii Kavkaz» newspaper, published by Feniks in 1905-1906, showed the domination in this block of material of genres of pamphlet and feuilleton, which was logical, since the publicist saw exposing the old regime and its defenders as his main objective, and the main target of his critique was the government.

Severe Primary Hyperparathyroidism Caused by Parathyroid Carcinoma in a 13‐Year‐Old Child; Novel Findings From HRpQCT
Nina Lenherr‐Taube, Carol KL Lam, Reza Vali
et al.
ABSTRACT Primary hyperparathyroidism is a condition that occurs infrequently in children. Parathyroid carcinoma, as the underlying cause of hyperparathyroidism in this age group, is extraordinarily rare, with only a few cases reported in the literature. We present a 13‐year‐old boy with musculoskeletal pain who was found to have brown tumors from primary hyperparathyroidism caused by parafibromin‐immunodeficient parathyroid carcinoma. Our patient had no clinical, biochemical, or radiographic evidence of pituitary adenomas, pancreatic tumors, thyroid tumors, pheochromocytoma, jaw tumors, renal abnormalities, or testicular lesions. Germline testing for AP2S1, CASR, CDC73/HRPT2, CDKN1B, GNA11, MEN1, PTH1R, RET, and the GCM2 gene showed no pathological variants, and a microarray of CDC73/HRPT2 did not reveal deletion or duplication. He was managed with i.v. fluids, calcitonin, pamidronate, and denosumab prior to surgery to stabilize hypercalcemia. After removal of a single parathyroid tumor, he developed severe hungry bone syndrome and required 3 weeks of continuous i.v. calcium infusion, in addition to oral calcium and activated vitamin D. Histopathological examination identified an angioinvasive parathyroid carcinoma with global loss of parafibromin (protein encoded by CDC73/HRPT2).HRpQCT and DXA studies were obtained prior to surgery and 18‐months postsurgery. HRpQCT showed a resolution of osteolytic lesions combined with structural improvement of cortical porosity and an increase in both cortical thickness and density compared with levels prior to treatment. These findings highlight the added value of HRpQCT in primary hyperparathyroidism. In addition to our case, we have provided a review of the published cases of parathyroid cancer in children. © 2019 The Authors. Irkutsk as a Growth Point of Freedom
Alexander Rappaport
Active intellectual work is done in the field of architecture in Irkutsk: Vladimir Pavlov, probably the most prominent master of Soviet Modernism, realized his projects here; his apprentices work here; and Project Baikal journal is also published here (editor-in-chief – Elena Grigoryeva). The journal has become one of the best architectural periodicals in Russia. It often publishes polemics, which is the journal’s policy. The authors of the journal are not afraid to debate and to express challenging opinions. The historical and theoretical researches carried out by Konstantin Lidin and Mark Meerovich from Irkutsk are also of great interest.
