Review of Fußball in der deutschen Kinder- und Jugendliteratur [Football in German Children’s and Youth Literature]
Carla Plieth
In lieu of an abstract: Football/soccer is the most popular sport in Germany, as is the case in many countries worldwide, and it has, unsurprisingly, been a staple feature in German children’s and youth literature (CYL) and media since the first half of the 20th century (see Geßmann & Reuter; Geßmann). Fußball in der deutschen Kinder- und Jugendliteratur [Football in German Children’s and Youth Literature] (2024), edited by Markwart Herzog and Claudia Maria Pecher, brings together studies by scholars of literature, linguistics, history of sports, media studies, and other fields on how this beloved sport has featured in German CYL. The collection grew out of the 14th Irseer Sports-Historical Conference, which sought to trace the cultural history of football in fictional German CYL since World War I. Although it does not cover all relevant aspects, authors, and texts, the publication seeks to respond to an ongoing interest in the meeting point of football and literature.
Jasmine Bria
In the literary space of Old English documentation, the treatise known as Wonders of the East deals with the representations of everything that Anglo-Saxon society perceived as completely foreign, the Other posited in the Elsewhere. Within these descriptions the dimension of magic seems to enter in a marginal but significant way. In particular, besides the inserted fragment depicting the two sorcerers of the apocryphal Old Testament, Jamnes and Mambres, the hybrid race known as donestre is represented as a people of soothsayers. Their main feature is, effectively, the ability to guess the language of the people who visit them in order to better communicate, learn their trust and eventually killing them by eating them. The divinatory power, used for evil purposes, adds to the deceptive and anthropophagic nature of the donestre and it becomes a further determining element of monstrosity. This essay aims to investigate how the treatise establishes an association between these semi-human creatures, located beyond the edge of the known world, and the practitioners of magical arts, positioned on the fringes of the Anglo-Saxon community, while identifying the ways in which magic can be used as a characterizing element in the marginalization of the Other.

Dänisch als zweite Fremdsprache im Germanistikstudium: Chancen und Perspektiven
Janusz Stopyra

The c-d conjecture
José I. Latorre, Germán Sierra
We conjecture a relation between the local dimension $d$ of a local nearest-neighbor critical Hamiltonian in one spatial dimension and the maximum central charge, $c_{\text{max}}$, that it can yield. Specifically, we propose that $c_{\text{max}} \leq d-1$, establishing a link between the short-distance lattice realization of a model and its emerging long-distance entanglement properties. This inequality can be viewed as a general form of a $c$-theorem establishing the reduction of effective degrees of freedom between the UV lattice and the IR conformal field theory. We support this conjecture with numerous examples.

„Und ich bin das Schnitzel“
Matthias STEINLE
The article undertakes a first approach to Thomas Brasch as a ‘media figure’. First, his audiovisual media presence during his lifetime is questioned in terms of how he participated in shaping his image as a public figure and developed a star persona as a German-German artist and man. The focus is on the first documentary about him, Annäherung an Thomas Brasch (1977, Georg Stefan Troller) and the television recordings of his ‘anti-acceptance speech’ on the occasion of the awarding of the Bavarian Film Prize in 1982. Due to the programmatic character of Brasch’s self-staging in front of the camera, these can be understood as basic texts for his media image. Using the example of numerous interviews and television appearances, it can be shown how Brasch linked his GDR origins and German-German identity with a specific representation of masculinity. Following the first phase, which is characterized by Brasch retaining control over his media figure, feature-length films about him and his life are examined: Brasch – Words of Want, Words of Fear (2011, Christoph Rüter), The Brasch Family (2018, Annekatrin Hendel) and Dear Thomas (2021, Andreas Kleinert) and the question of whether and how established (self-)images and biographical narratives are adopted and solidified or also questioned.
Tannaka duality and 1-affineness
Germán Stefanich
We show that Lurie's results on Tannaka duality for geometric stacks hold without any tameness hypotheses. We deduce this as a consequence of an affineness theorem in the theory of sheaves of categories. This affineness result is also applied to the study of tensor product and integral transform formulas for categories of quasicoherent sheaves.

The Acquisition of the NP in a German-Polish Bilingual Child. Evidence for Cross-Linguistic Influence
Anna Jachimek, Christine Dimroth, Klaus-Michael Köpcke
This article contributes to a debate in the linguistic and psychological literature that centers around the question if grammatical systems which are acquired simultaneously are separate right from the beginning or if they overlap. We will have a close look on developmental patterns involved in the construction of reference systems in German and Polish by a bilingual child between age 1;5 to 4;0. The German and Polish reference system is of particular interest here because the languages are very different from each other in the relevant domain. We will show that there is cross-linguistic influence in bilingual acquisition and that the grammars are not strictly separated. Overgeneralization moves from German to Polish and not vice versa. We assume that the child prefers transparent form-function patterns and therefore temporarily favors the German system over the Polish one in the course of acquisition. In particular, the concept of definiteness turns out to be a driving force for the expansion of the noun phrase in both languages. Once acquired on the basis of the demonstrative pronoun das ‘this’ in German, demonstrative markers in definite contexts are then also attested in Polish. Thus, the demonstrative pronoun das can be considered as being the key to the system.

Thyroid disease‐specific quality of life questionnaires ‐ A systematic review
Verena Uslar, Caroline Becker, Dirk Weyhe
et al.
Abstract Introduction Thyroid diseases are very common and rarely life‐threatening. One of the main therapeutic goals is an improvement in quality of life, making it important to measure in clinical and research settings. The aim of this systematic review is to provide an overview of the currently available thyroid‐specific quality of life questionnaires with regard to their validation quality in order to make recommendations for clinical use with a special focus on German questionnaires. Methods A systematic literature search was performed in Pubmed, Google Scholar and the Cochrane Library. A total of 904 studies were identified. After excluding duplicates, non‐English‐ or German‐language texts, full texts that were not freely available and studies with irrelevant content, 64 studies reporting on 16 different questionnaires were included in the analysis. Results Four questionnaires concerned benign thyroid diseases (ThyPRO, ThyPRO‐39, Thy‐R‐HRQoL and Thy‐D‐QOL), six malignant thyroid diseases (THYCA‐QoL, ThyCa‐HRLQOL, EORTC‐Thy34, MADSI‐Thy, QOL‐Thyroid and ThyCAT), and six endocrine orbitopathy (GO‐QOL, GO‐QLS, TED‐QOL, STED‐QOL, TAO‐QoL and Ox‐TED). Only five questionnaires were at least developed, if not validated, in German, and five were developed in more than two languages. Conclusions ThyPRO and the ThyPRO‐39 are the best‐evaluated questionnaires for benign thyroid diseases. Alternatively, in hypothyroid patients, the adequately validated Thy‐D‐QoL can be used. For malignant thyroid diseases, the choice should be made individually, as all six questionnaires (THYCA‐QoL, ThyCA‐HRQOL, EORTC‐Thy34, MDASI‐Thy, QOL‐Thyroid and ThyCAT) have different strengths and weaknesses. The GO‐QOL is the best‐validated questionnaire in endocrine orbitopathy. However, the TED‐QOL is also suitable as a short‐screening questionnaire for these patients.

Generative Models of Brain Dynamics -- A review
Mahta Ramezanian Panahi, Germán Abrevaya, Jean-Christophe Gagnon-Audet
et al.
The principled design and discovery of biologically- and physically-informed models of neuronal dynamics has been advancing since the mid-twentieth century. Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) have accelerated this progress. This review article gives a high-level overview of the approaches across different scales of organization and levels of abstraction. The studies covered in this paper include fundamental models in computational neuroscience, nonlinear dynamics, data-driven methods, as well as emergent practices. While not all of these models span the intersection of neuroscience, AI, and system dynamics, all of them do or can work in tandem as generative models, which, as we argue, provide superior properties for the analysis of neuroscientific data. We discuss the limitations and unique dynamical traits of brain data and the complementary need for hypothesis- and data-driven modeling. By way of conclusion, we present several hybrid generative models from recent literature in scientific machine learning, which can be efficiently deployed to yield interpretable models of neural dynamics.
On transference principle and Nesterenko's linear independence criterion
Oleg N. German, Nikolay G. Moshchevitin
We consider the problem of simultaneous approximation of real numbers $θ_1, \ldots,θ_n$ with rationals and the dual problem of approximating zero with the values of the linear form $x_0+θ_1x_1+\ldots+θ_nx_n$ at integer points. In this setting we analyse two transference inequalities obtained by Schmidt and Summerer. We present a rather simple geometric observation, which proves their result. We also derive several corollaries previously unknown. Particularly, we show that, together with the transference inequalities for uniform exponents, Schmidt and Summerer's inequalities imply the inequalities by Bugeaud and Laurent and "one half" of the inequalities by Marnat and Moshchevitin. Besides that, we show that our main construction provides a rather simple proof of Nesterenko's linear independence criterion.
Rainer Maria Rilke e Paula Modersohn-Becker Um diálogo inspirador no Réquiem a uma Amiga
Kathrin Rosenfield, Lawrence Flores Pereira

Symmetries of a two-dimensional continued fraction
Oleg N. German, Ibragim A. Tlyustangelov
In this paper we describe the group of symmetries of a two-dimensional continued fraction. As a multidimensional generalization of continued fractions we consider Klein polyhedra. We distinguish two types of symmetries: the Dirichlet-type ones, that correspond to the multiplication by units of the corresponding number field, and so called palindromic ones. The main result of the paper is a criterion for a two-dimensional continued fraction to have a palindromic symmetry. This criterion is analogous to the criterion for the period of a quadratic irrationality to be symmetric.
This article analyzes Georg Simmel’s concept of culture by reconstructing the genealogy of his theory within its historical, political, and economic context. It examines to what extent Simmel’s ideas on value and division of labor cement his conception of cultural alienation. Finally, it argues that Simmel’s cultural theory is significantly biased by a subjective theory of value, which entails apologetic traits.

Why Do Digital Native News Media Fail? An Investigation of Failure in the Early Start-Up Phase
Christopher Buschow
Digital native news media have great potential for improving journalism. Theoretically, they can be the sites where new products, novel revenue streams and alternative ways of organizing digital journalism are discovered, tested, and advanced. In practice, however, the situation appears to be more complicated. Besides the normal pressures facing new businesses, entrepreneurs in digital news are faced with specific challenges. Against the background of general and journalism specific entrepreneurship literature, and in light of a practice–theoretical approach, this qualitative case study research on 15 German digital native news media outlets empirically investigates what barriers curb their innovative capacity in the early start-up phase. In the new media organizations under study here, there are—among other problems—a high degree of homogeneity within founding teams, tensions between journalistic and economic practices, insufficient user orientation, as well as a tendency for organizations to be underfinanced. The patterns of failure investigated in this study can raise awareness, help news start-ups avoid common mistakes before actually entering the market, and help industry experts and investors to realistically estimate the potential of new ventures within the digital news industry.

Geodesic structure of a rotating regular black hole
Brandon Bautista-Olvera, Juan Carlos Degollado, Gabriel German
We examine the dynamics of particles around a rotating regular black hole. In particular we focus on the effects of the characteristic length parameter of the spinning black hole on the motion of the particles by solving the equation of orbital motion. We have found that there is a fourth constant of motion that determines the dynamics of orbits out the equatorial plane similar as in the Kerr black hole. Through detailed analyses of the corresponding effective potentials for massive particles the possible orbits are numerically simulated. A comparison with the trajectories in a Kerr spacetime shows that the differences appear when the black holes rotate slowly for large values of the characteristic length parameter.
Optimal state replication in stateful data planes
Abubakar Siddique Muqaddas, German Sviridov, Paolo Giaccone
et al.
In SDN stateful data planes, switches can execute algorithms to process traffic based on local states. This approach permits to offload decisions from the controller to the switches, thus to reduce the latency to react to network events. We consider distributed network applications that process traffic at each switch based on local replicas of network-wide states. Replicating a state across multiple switches poses many challenges, because the number of state replicas and their placement affects both the data traffic and the synchronization traffic among the replicas. In our work, we formulate the optimal placement problem for replicated states, taking into account the data traffic routing, to ensure that the network applications affect the proper traffic flows, and the synchronization traffic between replicas, to ensure state coherence. Due to the high complexity required to find the optimal solution, we propose an approximated algorithm able to scale to large network instances. We show numerically that this algorithm, despite its simplicity, approximates quite well the optimal solution. We also show the beneficial effects of replicating the states with respect to the single-replica scenario, so far considered in the literature. Finally, we provide an asymptotic analysis to find the optimal number of replicas.
S2e guideline: positioning and early mobilisation in prophylaxis or therapy of pulmonary disorders
T. Bein, M Bischoff, U Brückner
et al.
The German Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI) commissioneda revision of the S2 guidelines on “positioning therapy for prophylaxis or therapy of pulmonary function disorders” from 2008. Because of the increasing clinical and scientificrelevance the guidelines were extended to include the issue of “early mobilization”and the following main topics are therefore included: use of positioning therapy and earlymobilization for prophylaxis and therapy of pulmonary function disorders, undesired effects and complications of positioning therapy and early mobilization as well as practical aspects of the use of positioning therapy and early mobilization. These guidelines are the result of a systematic literature search and the subsequent critical evaluation of the evidence with scientific methods. The methodological approach for the process of development of the guidelines followed the requirements of evidence-based medicine, as defined as the standard by the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany. Recently published articles after 2005 were examined with respect to positioning therapy and the recently accepted aspect of early mobilization incorporates all literature published up to June 2014.ZusammenfassungDurch die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Anästhesiologie und Intensivmedizin (DGAI) wurde der Auftrag erteilt, die seit 2008 bestehende S2-Leitlinie „Lagerungstherapie zur Prophylaxe oder Therapie von pulmonalen Funktionsstörungen“ zu revidieren.
