Reassembling ‘green’ finance scholarship

Julius Kob, Matthias Taeger, Katharina Dittrich

Abstract The financial industry has become increasingly entangled with environmental matters of concern, constituting the phenomenon of ‘green’ finance. In this Forum, we approach green finance as financial climate governance to highlight its claim on finance’s role as legitimate and capable steward of the planet’s climate. This claim to govern and its promise to achieve desirable environmental conditions have made green finance a crucial object of investigation. However, we observe a growing fragmentation of green finance research along various fault lines, such as levels of analysis, normative positions, or academic structures. Calling for reassembling green finance scholarship, we posit a need for more integrative approaches, motivating this Forum’s central question: what integrative moves across socioeconomic research can enhance our understanding and judgement of green finance? The Forum gathers three contributions focused on: (1) integrating macro- and micro-approaches in green finance studies; (2) examining the politics of green finance as knowledge contestations; and (3) confronting stasis in green finance by exploring researchers’ agencies, emotions, and normativities. By reassembling green finance scholarship through integrative moves, we suggest marking green finance as a shared concern and fostering collective perspectives to bring clarity and constructive critique to what has become a dominant pursuit in facing the socioecological crisis.

Exploring network dynamics in scientific innovation: collaboration, knowledge combination, and innovative performance

Yangyang Jia, Hongshu Chen, Jingkang Liu et al.

The system of scientific innovation can be characterized as a complex, multi-layered network of actors, their products and knowledge elements. Despite the progress that has been made, a more comprehensive understanding of the interactions and dynamics of this multi-layered network remains a significant challenge. This paper constructs a multilayer longitudinal network to abstract institutions, products and ideas of the scientific system, then identifies patterns and elucidates the mechanism through which actor collaboration and their knowledge transmission influence the innovation performance and network dynamics. Aside from fostering a collaborative network of institutions via co-authorship, fine-grained knowledge elements are extracted using KeyBERT from academic papers to build knowledge network layer. Empirical studies demonstrate that actor collaboration and their unique and diverse ideas have a positive impact on the performance of the research products. This paper also presents empirical evidence that the embeddedness of the actors, their ideas and features of their research products influence the network dynamics. This study gains a deeper understanding of the driving factors that impact the interactions and dynamics of the multi-layered scientific networks.

High-quality marine economic development in China from the perspective of green total factor productivity growth: dynamic changes and improvement strategies

Peide Liu, Baoying Zhu, Mingyan Yang et al.

High-quality marine economic development (HMED) is regarded as a new development pattern of the marine economy in China. This paper aims to examine the dynamic changes and improvement strategies of HMED from the perspective of the green total factor productivity (GTFP) growth. First, the GTFP growth of the marine economy in China’s coastal regions for the period 2007–2020 is calculated using the bootstrapped Malmquist index. Second, the dynamic changes and spatial impacts of the GTFP growth are characterized using kernel density estimation (KDE). Moreover, a novel analytical framework to study the improvement strategies of the GTFP is developed. Within this framework, the fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) method is used to explore the paths to achieve HMED. The findings show that: (i) the GTFP growth for coastal regions shows significant fluctuations, suggesting that a stable pattern of marine economic development has yet to be established; (ii) the regional distribution of GTFP growth varies significantly, with provinces with fast GTFP growth gathering resources from neighboring provinces, resulting in a siphon effect; (iii) for coastal provinces that lack certain development conditions, the combined effect of other advantageous factors can be used to achieve HMED. Finally, this study presents policy recommendations for achieving HMED, which can provide insights into the design of China’s future marine economic policies. Disentangling organizational agility from flexibility, adaptability, and versatility: a systematic review

Eskedar Gizat Desalegn, Maria João Coelho Guedes, Jorge Filipe Da Silva Gomes et al.

Abstract Organizational agility is the ability of an organization to swiftly and efficiently respond to changes in the organization’s environment. However, the literature demonstrates the interchangeability of agility, flexibility, adaptability, and versatility. Therefore, confusion and conceptual overlap persist. As a result, this study aimed to provide further conceptual clarity about organizational agility by synthesizing organizational agility, flexibility, adaptability, and versatility. A systematic review of 40 articles published in business and management-related journals between 1991 and 2022 in ABI/INFORMS, Since Direct, Emerald databases are employed. Findings from thematic analysis and content analysis using Leximancer text mining analysis show that versatility, adaptability, and flexibility are closely connected with their focus on coping with change in the business environment. However, agility is distinct due to its emphasis on organizational ability, capability, and changeability, as well as how it conceptualizes these attributes. This review contributes to developing organizational agility theory and practice by disentangling organizational agility from related concepts. Specifically, it contributes to scientific communication by referring to the same phenomena as organizational agility. Finally, the study concludes by highlighting future research directions.

Spatiotemporal differentiation and evolution trend of green and low-carbon development performance in the National Major Strategic Regions

CHEN Minghua, SHI Nan, ZHANG Bianxiu, XIE Linxiao

[Objective] The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of green and low-carbon development in the Major Strategic Regions of China, analyze its spatiotemporal differentiation characteristics and dynamic change, and provide a scientific basis and decision-making reference for promoting high-quality regional development in a coordinated manner. [Methods] Based on the Global-Luenberger index of the super-efficiency EBM model, this study scientifically evaluated the green and low-carbon development performance of China’s Major Strategic Regions from 2012 to 2020. Dagum Gini coefficient, variance decomposition, and traditional and spatial kernel density estimation were used to reveal the spatiotemporal differentiation, dynamic change, and long-term transfer trend. [Results] (1) During the sample study period, the performance of green and low-carbon development in the Major Strategic Regions has been improved, showing the regional disequilibrium characteristics of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area > Chengdu-Chongqing > Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei > Yangtze River Delta > Yellow River Basin > the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. (2) The spatial difference of green and low-carbon development performance in the Major Strategic Regions was small, showing a trend of decline and then rising over time. Supervariable density difference was the main source of spatial difference. Structural differences mainly depended on technological progress differences, input factors, and undesired output productivity differences. Further subdividing the factors, environmental pollution control productivity differences and net carbon emission reduction productivity differences were the main driving forces for regional disparities in green and low-carbon development performance. (3) The green and low-carbon development performance of the Major Strategic Regions was generally high, but there was a trend of spatial polarization. The green and low-carbon development of all regions was manifested as low-performing cities moved upward, medium-performing cities showed sustainability, and high-performing cities moved downward, and the overall distribution characteristics were reversed. When considering the spatial conditions, the positive spillover effect of neighboring cities in the Yellow River Basin, the middle reaches of the Yangtze River Delta, and the Yangtze River Economic Belt was significant, but the spatial spillover effect of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Chengdu-Chongqing was not obvious, and the “beggar-thy-neighbor” phenomenon existed in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei. [Conclusion] In order to establish a new pattern of green and low-carbon development led by the Major Strategic Regions, it is necessary to rationally optimize the spatial layout and scientifically understand the structural differences to jointly improve green and low-carbon development performance, while giving full play to the spatial spillover effect to form a joint force for improving green and low-carbon development performance.

Managerial competencies and small business venture performance: an emerging economies perspective

Isichei Ejikeme Emmanuel, Rimamnde Rikwentishe, Igbatigbi Friday Attayi

Purpose — The challenges faced by most small-scale ventures in developing economies has largely been attributed to not just the environment issues, but also the poor human capacity of most managers to effectively make decisions that will ensure the continued survival of the business over a period. The objective of this research was thus to assess the effect of managerial competency on performance of SMEs. Method — We adopted descriptive survey research design for this study. We used a sample of 394 SMEs managers for the survey, which were selected using convenience sampling technique. This research relied on content validity and internal consistency measure for validity and reliability respectively. We used multiple regression with the aid of SPSSv23 for data analysis. Result — The outcome shows that managerial competencies affect the performance of small-scale enterprises. Also, we found that interpersonal competency of manager of SMEs is low, while the cognitive competency made the strongest unique contribution to explain venture performance. We conclude that to drive improved performance there must be effort targeted towards improving the skills of managers of SMEs in the country. Contribution — This research validates the resource-based view theory and contributes to expand literature on competency and leadership from an emerging economies context.

A three-parameter logistic regression model

Xiaoli Yu, Shaoting Li, Jiahua Chen

Dose–response experiments and data analyses are often carried out according to an optimal design under a model assumption. A two-parameter logistic model is often used because of its nice mathematical properties and plausible stochastic response mechanisms. There is an extensive literature on its optimal designs and data analysis strategies. However, a model is at best a good approximation in a real-world application, and researchers must be aware of the risk of model mis-specification. In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of the sequential ED-design, the D-optimal design, and the up-and-down design under the three-parameter logistic regression model, and we develop a numerical method for the parameter estimation. Simulations show that the combination of the proposed model and the data analysis strategy performs well. When the logistic model is correct, this more complex model has hardly any efficiency loss. The three-parameter logistic model works better than the two-parameter logistic model in the presence of model mis-specification.
