Abstract. The purpose of this article is to offer an adaptive attitude as a response to the reality of the diversity of religious life in Indonesia. Religious diversity in Indonesia, on the one hand, requires an attitude of acceptance towards the existence of other religions, but on the other hand, religious truth must also be maintained so as not to fall into an attitude of relativizing the truth. The method used in this study is a literature study method by examining several inclusive teachings from the Bible and the concept of adaptive attitudes. The results of this research showed that the adaptive attitude is a relevant attitude to be developed amidst religious pluralism in Indonesia, because it offers a religious attitude that is able to adapt to the context, but at the same time still maintains religious traditions.

Allan Heaton Anderson is one of the few white South Africans who succeeded in getting out of the entrapment of racial prejudices when it came to the written history of African-initiated churches. He became aware of the fact that an authentic theology can only be examined within context, and thus his theological analysis of African independent churches (AICs) reflects his status in the margins. Anderson not only conducted research among the poor and the downtrodden, where he challenged assumptions made by his white contemporaries, but he also identified with the ‘othering’, those who were powerless and marginalised – contributing immensely to African theology of inclusivity. This article comprised three sections: firstly, it traced Anderson’s journey within and his contribution to the theology of African Pentecostalism; secondly, it explored the notion of typology of AICs using the lens of ‘othering’; and thirdly, it concluded with recent trends in neo-Pentecostalism. Following the philosophical axiom of critical theory, the article was involved in dialogue with Anderson, interrogated European missionary typologies of African-initiated churches and, finally, critiqued the convergence of ‘progressive Pentecostals’ and ‘globalisation’ in shaping a new mission paradigm. Contribution: This article paid closer attention to intersectionality of historiography and hybrid theological subjects such as practical theology and African theology. The contribution of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research by white African scholars on African theology was appraised. The article further appreciated the contribution by a white theologian who had mastered African epistemology of being and living by critiquing the theory of paternalistic ‘othering’.

African biblical studies (ABS) focus on biblical interpretation in Africa. Although new, it has gained massive recognition among African biblical scholars as the biblical interpretation focus that best suits the peculiar challenges that face African Christians. Its emergence, of course, was reactionary to the Western approach to the interpretation of the Bible in Africa and the practice of Christianity as well, which failed to take into cognisance the peculiar needs of African Christians. In New Testament scholarship in Nigeria, ABS has come to dominate biblical interpretation, being the most preferred by New Testament scholars. However, this article notices a persistent problem with regard to methodological rigour in ABS in Nigeria. This article aims to call the attention of New Testament scholars in Nigeria to methodological rigour while engaging in ABS as this is also part of the reasons breaking into mainstream New Testament scholarship has become a problem for many of these scholars. This equally leads to poor global visibility and competitiveness on the part of many Nigerian New Testament scholars. The approach to the discussion in the work is analytical and descriptive with a touch of personal observation. Contribution: This article calls attention to the need for ABS scholars in Nigeria to emphasise methodological rigour in their research. While this will lead to recognition of the works of ABS practitioners in Nigeria and beyond, this article makes a case for academic excellence which is the hallmark of good biblical scholarship.

The problem of inculcating solidarity in family members is seminal for the formation of good pro-social attitudes. The Magisterium of the Church and St. John Paul II in particular define solidarity as “being one with the other, rather than one against the other;” the same virtue forms a part of a system of mutually conditioning values and principles that need to correspond with dignity, love, truth, and justice all of which is based on spousal solidarity. This in turn provides the foundation for building solidarity within the family, which consequently leads to the realisation of solidarity in the service of and respect for the sanctity of human life, i.e. towards a civilisation of love, which the Holy Pope also calls the civilisation of life.

Biblical and post-Biblical texts refer to the tradition of the betrayal of Edom. During theconquest the brother-nation of Edom would have betrayed Judah by choosing sides with the Babylonians. Historical and archaeological evidence for this ‘fact’ is absent or not convincing. It is argued that the occupation of Southern Judah by the Edomites in late Babylonian and/or Persian times would have been the source of this claimed tradition.

Orientalist’s attention against the Quran can be traced since the visit of Peter Venerable, from Cluny, to Toledo in the mid 12th century. He asked some western scholars to produce a series of works that will be a scientific basis for the western intellectual meeting with Islam. Orientalist’s critical study against the Quran is not limited to questioning its authenticity. The issues raised are the classic that is always a matter of the influence of Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians, and the contents of the Quran. Orintalist then snaring to a naïve assumption that the Quran is the historical product. Orientalist’s biggest mistake was to assume the Quran equal to the bible. When a critical study of the bible to prove some of its contents are not original anymore, so they assumed that a critical assessment of the Quran to prove the same thing. Though, the biblical method proved the originality of the quran. Therefore, their desire to make a critical edition, and restore the text of the Quran is closer to a fantasy rather than a scientific work

The article shows, that the stories of the Patriarchs as well as the Exodus-story are allochthonous traditions of origin. We find comparable stories in the neighboring cultures of Israel. Egypt as origin of human culture was of utmost importance in the Levant. Herodotus reports a myth of origin of the Phoenicians which is of particular interest in this respect. As far as it can be seen there are affinities between this tradition and the Exodus motif from the Hebrew Bible. This raises the question if we should read the Biblical traditions as part of the comprehensive cultural context of the Levant.
