Son of Struggling Africa: On the Centenary of Patrice Lumumba’s Birth (July 2, 1925 - January 17, 1961)

Liudmila V. Ponomarenko, Elena G. Zueva

The article commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Patrice Emery Lumumba, a national hero of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), one of the most prominent leaders of the African anti-colonial movement, and the first Prime Minister of an independent country. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, his homeland became an arena for confrontation between the African liberation forces and the West, which was interested in maintaining its position in the mineral-rich country in Central Africa. In modern terms, as African countries strive to assert their sovereignty and security, strengthen their presence in the global economy and politics, it is crucial for them to rely on historical experience, taking into consideration the successes and failures of the period of struggle for independence and decolonization. Using the biographical method, the article undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the development of an individual’s life strategy as a social subject in interaction with society, examining how the environment and socio-cultural circumstances affect a person’s beliefs and behavior, and the subsequent manifestations of a unique and typical character. The research is grounded in a comprehensive examination of P. Lumumba’s speeches, correspondence, and published articles. Additionally, it draws upon annual collections of Belgian and Congolese documents on the situation in the country (1959-1961), published in Brussels. P. Lumumba’s personality was shaped by a specific system of the Belgian colonial administration. P. Lumumba was a highly intelligent individual hailing from a humble peasant background. He was a talented organizer and an excellent orator. Thanks to his natural abilities, hard work and self-education, he became one of the most respected politicians of the DRC on the eve of and in the first year of its independence. P. Lumumba founded a new political party, the Congolese National Movement, which was the only party to deviate from narrow ethnic interests. The main tenets of the program can be summarized as follows: the formation of an independent, unified, integral and indivisible Congo; the organization of the public sector, which controls the mining industry, to pursue an independent course in the economic field and in foreign policy; overcoming tribalism and regionalism; creating a just society without poverty and exploitation. In foreign policy, he focused on neutrality and Pan-Africanism. The article analyzes how, during the Cold War, such a radical policy and uncompromising stance of P. Lumumba turned the West and pro-Western forces inside the Congo against him, which caused a crisis in the country that led to the assassination of the Prime Minister. The different assessments of P. Lumumba’s activities primarily stem from the varying political positions of researchers and politicians, as well as from the contradictory worldview and the lack of formality of the politician’s own program.

Status and Needs Analysis of Korean Medicine Doctors’ Continuing Professional Development

Eun-Byul Cho, Jae-Chang Lee, Eun-Jung Kim et al.

Objectives: The present study aimed to analyze the status and needs of Korean Medicine doctors’ (KMDs) continuing professional development (CPD) and establish future improvement directions. Methods : A cross-sectional survey targeting all KMDs was conducted between October 23 to November 5, 2024, obtaining 624 responses. The questionnaire was developed to assess satisfaction with continuing education and residency training, perceived efficacy on competency development, and improvement needs. Results : While current CPD programs effectively enhanced optimal patient care competencies (highest-rated domain), approximately 40% of respondents indicated minimal improvement in social accountability and clinical management competencies. The most requested improvements were the expansion of practical training opportunities (63.0%) and curriculum improvement (37.0%). For residency training, respondents prioritized developing competency-centered curricula (65.0%) and standardized educational programs across training hospitals (63.3%). Conclusion : Findings indicate that KMDs desire increased practical training opportunities, competency-based standardized curricula, and expanded scope of practice through institutional support. Establishing competency frameworks across clinical departments and strengthening competencies required in modern healthcare environments are essential for advancing Korean Medicine practice.

Enrichment of ruminant meats with health enhancing fatty acids and antioxidants: feed-based effects on nutritional value and human health aspects – invited review

Eric N. Ponnampalam, Eric N. Ponnampalam, Michelle Kearns et al.

Optimising resource use efficiency in animal- agriculture-production systems is important for the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of food systems. Production of foods with increased health enhancing aspects can add value to the health and wellbeing of the population. However, enrichment of foods, especially meat with health enhancing fatty acids (HEFA) increases susceptibility to peroxidation, which adversely influences its shelf life, nutritional value and eating quality. The meat industry has been challenged to find sustainable strategies that enhance the fatty acid profile and antioxidant actions of meat while mitigating oxidative deterioration and spoilage. Currently, by-products or co-products from agricultural industries containing a balance of HEFA and antioxidant sources seem to be a sustainable strategy to overcome this challenge. However, HEFA and antioxidant enrichment processes are influenced by ruminal lipolysis and biohydrogenation, HEFA-antioxidant interactions in rumen ecosystems and muscle biofortification. A deep understanding of the performance of different agro-by-product-based HEFA and antioxidants and their application in current animal production systems is critical in developing HEFA-antioxidant co-supplementation strategies that would benefit modern consumers who desire nutritious, palatable, safe, healthy, affordable, and welfare friendly meat and processed meat products. The current review presents the latest developments regarding discovery and application of novel sources of health beneficial agro-by-product-based HEFA and antioxidants currently used in the production of HEFA-antioxidant enriched ruminant meats and highlights future research perspectives.

“Hombres que vivían como las mujeres” en la Alta California del siglo xviii: Coyas/joyas, cuút o uluqi, ¿sodomitas, hermafroditas o amaricados?

Diana Roselly Pérez Gerardo

Objective/context: This article analyzes testimonies of religious and military men, produced between 1770 and 1812, which give an account of Chumash, Juaneño and Yuma indigenous men of Alta California who were in the habit of dressing as women and joining them in the tasks corresponding to the feminine roles in these societies. The documents analyzed include two military diaries on the exploration expeditions and three chronicles of Franciscans who, starting in 1769, were in charge of founding missions in this area. Methodology: Through a gender perspective analysis, we examine the terms and categories used in the sources to describe and give meaning to the sexual roles and practices of the Coyas/Joyas, Cuút or Uluqi. Originality: The few works dedicated to the analysis of California Indians “in the habit of women” have focused on the missionary discourse or on the denunciation of the supposed “extermination” of dissident sexual practices. This paper argues that while the testimonies unanimously condemned these practices, they differed in the categories used to name and classify them and, thus, in the meaning attributed to them, which resulted in different legal and theological implications. Conclusions: The existence of men who dressed as women persisted, according to the sources analyzed, until the beginning of the 19th century in the region from the Gila and Colorado rivers to the Santa Barbara canal in northwestern New Spain. The categories of sodomy, amaricados or hermaphrodites, and male-female were understood under the single-sex model. And, although by the end of the eighteenth century, the principles of modern legal medicine were beginning to change, the meaning given to the Coyas/Joyas was linked to the justification of the advances or difficulties of colonization rather than to the scientific debates of the time

Investigating the timelike Compton scattering in photon–proton interactions at the EIC

Ya-Ping Xie, V. P. Gonçalves

Abstract Information about the three-dimensional description of the quark and gluon content of hadrons, described by the generalized parton distributions (GPDs), can be probed by exclusive processes in electron–proton (ep) collisions. In this letter, we investigate the timelike Compton scattering (TCS) in ep collisions at the future electron-ion collider (EIC). Such process is characterized by the exclusive dilepton production through the subprocess $$\gamma p \rightarrow \gamma ^*p \rightarrow l^+ l^- p$$ γ p → γ ∗ p → l + l - p , with the real photon in the initial state being emitted by the incoming electron. Assuming a given model for the GPDs, the TCS differential cross-section is estimated, as well the contribution associated to the interference between the TCS and Bethe–Heitler (BH) amplitudes. Predictions for the TCS, BH and interference contributions are presented considering the kinematical range expected to be covered by the EIC detectors. Moreover, the polarized photon asymmetry is also studied. Our results indicated that a future experimental analysis, considering photon circular polarizations, can be useful to probe the interference contribution and constrain the description of the GPDs for the proton.
