Evaluación de desempeño de edificios

Jaya Mukhopadhyay, Andrea Martínez-Arias

This study focuses on the ancient and abiding links between poetry and prophylaxis. These links are first of all thematic and historical: they are part of the traditional current of medical poetry. They are also based on the parenetic specificity of poetic discourse considered as a moral prophylaxis. Poetry thus appears as a means of hygiene for the soul: it is both a protection against the anguish of death and a "health regime" for the spirit. But the real origin of the links between poetry and prophylaxis goes back to the apotropaic powers of language.

The present article examines the network of contacts between German-speaking travellers in Paris at the beginning of the 18th century, using the example of the travel diary of Johann Friedrich Armand von Uffenbach, who stayed there for seven months, after arriving in the city only a few days after the death of Louis XIV. During his stay, Uffenbach meticulously records the people he meets, sees and talks to. The present study analyses the composition of this network of contacts that Uffenbach created during his voyage, focusing particularly on the network of German-speaking travellers and that of travellers and Parisians, while highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of these networks revealed in Uffenbach’s account.

A typology of adaptive façades. An empirical study based on the morphology of glazed facades

Marcin Brzezicki

A building’s façade is its main interface with the external environment. Adaptive façade, one recent invention in the façade industry, has the capability to change its behaviour in real-time to respond to internal and/or external parameters, by means of materials, components, and systems. Among these, the adaptive shading and the façade glazing are two components that must fit together. This paper focuses on the spatial relationship between these components. It presents the results of the morphological analysis of façades with adaptive shading systems and the spatial relation between the adaptive shading system and the building’s glass envelope. To characterise this relation, we formulated two measures: depth and distance. The results revealed four types of such relations: (i) the shading elements are located outside the building’s glass envelope, (ii) they are covered by the glass envelope, (iii) they are located between the layers of the glazing façade, and (iv) they represent thin coatings that are flush with the surface of the glass. These results provide important insights into the emergence of new aesthetical trends in architecture, especially given the most recent technologies adopted in façades. In conclusion, we bring empirical evidence that the location of the shading system in relation to the glass envelope of a building is the key morphological feature that determines the extent of spatial transformation of the architectural structure on which such a system is installed.

The Creation of Contemporary Artwork

Narsen Afatara

Indonesian contemporary art has blurred in its identity and time. A controversial understanding always gets along with it if we emerge the word “contemporary” in art creativity. This is a never ending controversial solving in its meaning and value. In contemporary fine art issue, the problem of modern duplication , postmodern duplication, traditional duplication even in ethnic duplication, will give some new understanding in this plurarity era. The claim of uniformity in modern arts mainstream is still in process. In other words, it continues to fill the existing places in modern arts in the limitation of modern civilization. In giving the evaluation of contemporary works, we need a new atmosphere within the development of contemporary art creation. We can use philosophical basis, the creation of methodology through research or another way that support good quality of artwork.

The early nineteenth century can be considered as a turning point in orthopaedics. Scientific and technical progress allowed those who were called ‘lame’ and ‘hunchbacks’ to be given new treatments. These new cures were very much based on mechanical appliances, ‘machines’ which consisted of beds and chairs incorporating traction systems. In 1817, in Morley (Meuse department), François Humbert (1776-1850), a country doctor and collector, created the first French orthopaedic institution, which accommodated about three hundred patients. In an establishment far from academic centres, he was the first doctor to examine the possibility of treating congenital hip dislocation, deemed incurable at that time. Supported by a book which explains the operation of his inventions, about forty well-made models constitute an element of communication about this innovative work, well worth better institutional recognition and accessibility to the public. The collection had a turbulent history before arriving in the Barrois museum in the city of Bar-le-Duc. Today, a project of preventive conservation and restoration is being developed through a partnership between the museum and an association. Beyond a project of an exhibition to celebrate the bicentennial of the creation of the Morley institution in 2017, reflection has been initiated concerning the inclusion of this highly specific collection in the museum presentation of the permanent exhibition rooms, in the broader context of the technical and scientific heritage of the Meuse department.

From circle to 3-sphere: Head pose estimation by instance parameterization

Xi Peng, Junzhou Huang, Qiong Hu et al.

Coarse-to-fine framework for 3-dimensional head pose estimation.Parameterize instance factors in a generative mannar.Uniform embedding in a novel direction alleviates manifold degradation.Outperform state-of-the-arts on multiple challenging databases. Three-dimensional head pose estimation from a single 2D image is a challenging task with extensive applications. Existing approaches lack the capability to deal with multiple pose-related and -unrelated factors in a uniform way. Most of them can provide only one-dimensional yaw estimation and suffer from limited representation ability for out-of-sample testing inputs. These drawbacks lead to limited performance when extensive variations exist on faces in-the-wild. To address these problems, we propose a coarse-to-fine pose estimation framework, where the unit circle and 3-sphere are employed to model the manifold topology on the coarse and fine layer respectively. It can uniformly factorize multiple factors in an instance parametric subspace, where novel inputs can be synthesized under a generative framework. Moreover, our approach can effectively avoid the manifold degradation problem when 3D pose estimation is performed. The results on both experimental and in-the-wild databases demonstrate the validity and superior performance of our approach compared with the state-of-the-arts.

Digital Snaps

J. Larsen, Mette Sandbye

Photography as an everyday practice is once again changing dramatically. At this moment of transition from analogue to digital, Digital Snaps aims to develop a new media ecology that can accommodate these changes to photography 'as we know it'. Expert contributors representing varied disciplines demonstrate how and to what extent the traditional social practices, technologies and images of analogue photography are being transformed with the movement to digital photography. They zoom in on typical, vernacular, everyday practices: the development of the family photo album from a physical object in the living room to a digital practice on the Internet; the use of mobile phones in everyday life; photo communities on the Internet; photo booth photography; studio photography; and fine arts' appropriation of amateur photography. They explore how this media convergence transforms the media ecology the networks, objects, performances, meanings and circulations of vernacular photography, as we research it through ordinary people's use of such new cameras and interactive Internet spaces as part of their everyday lives.
