From Data to Alloys Predicting and Screening High Entropy Alloys for High Hardness Using Machine Learning

Rahul Bouri, Manikantan R. Nair, Tribeni Roy

The growing need for structural materials with strength, mechanical stability, and durability in extreme environments is driving the development of high entropy alloys. These are materials with near equiatomic mixing of five or more principal elements, and such compositional complexity often leads to improvements in mechanical properties and high thermal stability, etc. Thus, high-entropy alloys have found their applications in domains like aerospace, biomedical, energy storage, catalysis, electronics, etc. However, the vast compositional design and experimental exploration of high-entropy alloys are both time consuming and expensive and require a large number of resources. Machine learning techniques have thus become essential for accelerating high entropy alloys discovery using data driven predictions of promising alloy combinations and their properties. Hence, this work employs a machine learning framework that predicts high entropy alloy hardness from elemental descriptors such as atomic radius, valence electron count, bond strength, etc. Machine learning regression models, like LightGBM, Gradient Boosting Regressor, and Transformer encoder, were trained on experimental data. Additionally, a language model was also fine tuned to predict hardness from elemental descriptor strings. The results indicate that LightGBM has better accuracy in predicting the hardness of high entropy alloys compared to other models used in this study. Further, a combinatorial technique was used to generate over 9 million virtual high entropy alloy candidates, and the trained machine learning models were used to predict their hardness. This study shows how machine learning-driven high throughput screening and language modelling approaches can accelerate the development of next generation high entropy alloys.

Doubled Embodiment and the Temporal Experience of Illness in Comics

Nancy Pedri

This contribution considers the centrality of pictorial embodiment in autobiographical comics. It begins by tracing pictorial embodiment’s connection to othering and then examines the popular practice of doubled embodiment in graphic illness narrative. Expanding upon theorizations of doubled embodiment as manifesting subjective experiences of illness, several examples will serve to trace how double embodiment in graphic illness narratives speaks to the ill subject’s personal experience of time. Ultimately, this contribution proposes that double embodiment can indicate how, in illness, time intersects with considerations of minds and emotional states. In the works of graphic illness studied below, doubles address how an ill life is often one “marked not by progress but by recurrence, repetition, and ellipses” (41), as comic critic Jared Gardner claims in relation to his own chronic illness.

Few-Shot Learning for Annotation-Efficient Nucleus Instance Segmentation

Yu Ming, Zihao Wu, Jie Yang et al.

Nucleus instance segmentation from histopathology images suffers from the extremely laborious and expert-dependent annotation of nucleus instances. As a promising solution to this task, annotation-efficient deep learning paradigms have recently attracted much research interest, such as weakly-/semi-supervised learning, generative adversarial learning, etc. In this paper, we propose to formulate annotation-efficient nucleus instance segmentation from the perspective of few-shot learning (FSL). Our work was motivated by that, with the prosperity of computational pathology, an increasing number of fully-annotated datasets are publicly accessible, and we hope to leverage these external datasets to assist nucleus instance segmentation on the target dataset which only has very limited annotation. To achieve this goal, we adopt the meta-learning based FSL paradigm, which however has to be tailored in two substantial aspects before adapting to our task. First, since the novel classes may be inconsistent with those of the external dataset, we extend the basic definition of few-shot instance segmentation (FSIS) to generalized few-shot instance segmentation (GFSIS). Second, to cope with the intrinsic challenges of nucleus segmentation, including touching between adjacent cells, cellular heterogeneity, etc., we further introduce a structural guidance mechanism into the GFSIS network, finally leading to a unified Structurally-Guided Generalized Few-Shot Instance Segmentation (SGFSIS) framework. Extensive experiments on a couple of publicly accessible datasets demonstrate that, SGFSIS can outperform other annotation-efficient learning baselines, including semi-supervised learning, simple transfer learning, etc., with comparable performance to fully supervised learning with less than 5% annotations.

Ambra Carta, Lorenzo Marchese

From Dialogic Imagination to Polyphonic Thinking: Bakhtin in Saransk 2021

Oleg Osovsky, Vera Kirzhaeva, Svetlana Dubrovskaya et al.

The article presents the results of the XVII International Bakhtin Conference held in Saransk (Russia) on July 5-10, 2021. The forum brought together over 100 participants from 22 countries and was held online. The 18 plenary lectures and more than 100 panels and online-discussions focused on the most important questions of the reception of Bakhtin’s heritage, and the influence of the thinker’s ideas on contemporary humanities. Presentations included works in the following areas: biography of Bakhtin, determining the place of his ideas in modern philology, philosophy and other social sciences, the theory and practice of education, and interdisciplinary research. This article analyses and contextualises the work of the conference against the background of the Bakhtin Forums of the 1980s and 2010s, which became an important part of the global Bakhtin Studies, as well as of the recent development of Bakhtin’s heritage in Russia and worldwide. The authors highlight the most important results of the last conference as supplementing and reconstructing Bakhtin’s biography, clarifying the details of the process of dialogical interaction of Bakhtin’s work with his contemporary ideas and the preceding traditions, defining the boundaries of Bakhtin’s influence on the humanities and the natural science, as well as the possibilities of integration of these disciplines under the “sign of Bakhtin”.

Building Height Prediction with Instance Segmentation

Furkan Burak Bagci, Ahmet Alp Kindriroglu, Metehan Yalcin et al.

Extracting building heights from satellite images is an active research area used in many fields such as telecommunications, city planning, etc. Many studies utilize DSM (Digital Surface Models) generated with lidars or stereo images for this purpose. Predicting the height of the buildings using only RGB images is challenging due to the insufficient amount of data, low data quality, variations of building types, different angles of light and shadow, etc. In this study, we present an instance segmentation-based building height extraction method to predict building masks with their respective heights from a single RGB satellite image. We used satellite images with building height annotations of certain cities along with an open-source satellite dataset with the transfer learning approach. We reached, the bounding box mAP 59, the mask mAP 52.6, and the average accuracy value of 70% for buildings belonging to each height class in our test set.

Achieving Operational Scalability Using Razee Continuous Deployment Model and Kubernetes Operators

Srini Bhagavan, Saravanan Balasubramanian, Prasad Reddy Annem et al.

Recent advancements in the cloud computing domain have resulted in huge strides toward simplifying the procurement of hardware and software for diverse needs. By moving enterprise workloads to managed cloud offerings (private, public, hybrid), customers are delegating mundane tasks and labor-intensive maintenance activities related to network connectivity, procurement of cloud resource, application deployment, software patches, and upgrades, etc., This often translates to benefits such as high availability and reduced cost. The popularity of container and micro-services-based deployment has made Kubernetes the de-facto standard to deliver applications. However, even with Kubernetes orchestration, cloud service providers frequently have operational scalability issues due to lack of Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CICD) automation and increased demand for human operators when managing a large number of software deployments across multiple data centers/availability zones. Kubernetes solves this in a novel way by creating and managing custom applications using Operators. Agile methodology advocates incremental CICD which are adopted by cloud providers. However, ironically, it is this same continuous delivery feature of application updates, Kubernetes cluster upgrades, etc., that is also a bane to cloud providers. In this paper, we will demonstrate the use of IBM open-source project Razee as a scalable continuous deployment framework to deploy open-source RStudio and Nginx Operators. We will discuss how IBM Watson SaaS application Operator, Blockchain applications, and Kubernetes resources updates, etc., can be deployed similarly and the use of Operators to perform application life cycle management. We assert that using Razee in conjunction with Operators on Kubernetes simplifies application life cycle management and increases scalability.

Double Explore-then-Commit: Asymptotic Optimality and Beyond

Tianyuan Jin, Pan Xu, Xiaokui Xiao et al.

We study the multi-armed bandit problem with subgaussian rewards. The explore-then-commit (ETC) strategy, which consists of an exploration phase followed by an exploitation phase, is one of the most widely used algorithms in a variety of online decision applications. Nevertheless, it has been shown in Garivier et al. (2016) that ETC is suboptimal in the asymptotic sense as the horizon grows, and thus, is worse than fully sequential strategies such as Upper Confidence Bound (UCB). In this paper, we show that a variant of ETC algorithm can actually achieve the asymptotic optimality for multi-armed bandit problems as UCB-type algorithms do and extend it to the batched bandit setting. Specifically, we propose a double explore-then-commit (DETC) algorithm that has two exploration and exploitation phases and prove that DETC achieves the asymptotically optimal regret bound. To our knowledge, DETC is the first non-fully-sequential algorithm that achieves such asymptotic optimality. In addition, we extend DETC to batched bandit problems, where (i) the exploration process is split into a small number of batches and (ii) the round complexity is of central interest. We prove that a batched version of DETC can achieve the asymptotic optimality with only a constant round complexity. This is the first batched bandit algorithm that can attain the optimal asymptotic regret bound and optimal round complexity simultaneously.

Electrostatic dust-acoustic rogue waves in an electron depleted dusty plasma

J. N. Sikta, N. A. Chowdhury, A. Mannan et al.

The formation of the gigantic dust-acoustic rouge waves (DARWs) in an electron depleted unmagnetized opposite polarity dusty plasma system is theoretically observed for the first time. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation (derived by utilizing the reductive perturbation method) has been analytically as well as numerically analyzed to identify the basic features (viz., height, thickness, and modulational instability, etc.) of DARWs. The results obtained form this investigation should be useful in understanding the basic properties of these rouge waves which can predict to be formed in electron depleted unmagnetized opposite polarity dusty plasma systems like mesosphere, F-rings of Saturn, and cometary atmosphere, etc.

Text Classification for Azerbaijani Language Using Machine Learning and Embedding

Umid Suleymanov, Behnam Kiani Kalejahi, Elkhan Amrahov et al.

Text classification systems will help to solve the text clustering problem in the Azerbaijani language. There are some text-classification applications for foreign languages, but we tried to build a newly developed system to solve this problem for the Azerbaijani language. Firstly, we tried to find out potential practice areas. The system will be useful in a lot of areas. It will be mostly used in news feed categorization. News websites can automatically categorize news into classes such as sports, business, education, science, etc. The system is also used in sentiment analysis for product reviews. For example, the company shares a photo of a new product on Facebook and the company receives a thousand comments for new products. The systems classify the comments into categories like positive or negative. The system can also be applied in recommended systems, spam filtering, etc. Various machine learning techniques such as Naive Bayes, SVM, Decision Trees have been devised to solve the text classification problem in Azerbaijani language.

VeMo: Enabling Transparent Vehicular Mobility Modeling at Individual Levels with Full Penetration

Yu Yang, Xiaoyang Xie, Zhihan Fang et al.

Understanding and predicting real-time vehicle mobility patterns on highways are essential to address traffic congestion and respond to the emergency. However, almost all existing works (e.g., based on cellphones, onboard devices, or traffic cameras) suffer from high costs, low penetration rates, or only aggregate results. To address these drawbacks, we utilize Electric Toll Collection systems (ETC) as a large-scale sensor network and design a system called VeMo to transparently model and predict vehicle mobility at the individual level with a full penetration rate. Our novelty is how we address uncertainty issues (i.e., unknown routes and speeds) due to sparse implicit ETC data based on a key data-driven insight, i.e., individual driving behaviors are strongly correlated with crowds of drivers under certain spatiotemporal contexts and can be predicted by combining both personal habits and context information. More importantly, we evaluate VeMo with (i) a large-scale ETC system with tracking devices at 773 highway entrances and exits capturing more than 2 million vehicles every day; (ii) a fleet consisting of 114 thousand vehicles with GPS data as ground truth. We compared VeMo with state-of-the-art benchmark mobility models, and the experimental results show that VeMo outperforms them by average 10% in terms of accuracy.

Determination of Stationary Points and Their Bindings in Dataset using RBF Methods

Zuzana Majdisova, Vaclav Skala, Michal Smolik

Stationary points of multivariable function which represents some surface have an important role in many application such as computer vision, chemical physics, etc. Nevertheless, the dataset describing the surface for which a sampling function is not known is often given. Therefore, it is necessary to propose an approach for finding the stationary points without knowledge of the sampling function. In this paper, an algorithm for determining a set of stationary points of given sampled surface and detecting the bindings between these stationary points (such as stationary points lie on line segment, circle, etc.) is presented. Our approach is based on the piecewise RBF interpolation of the given dataset.

Noncommutative topology and Jordan operator algebras

David P. Blecher, Matthew Neal

Jordan operator algebras are norm-closed spaces of operators on a Hilbert space with $a^2 \in A$ for all $a \in A$. We study noncommutative topology, noncommutative peak sets and peak interpolation, and hereditary subalgebras of Jordan operator algebras. We show that Jordan operator algebras present perhaps the most general setting for a `full' noncommutative topology in the C*-algebraic sense of Akemann, L. G. Brown, Pedersen, etc, and as modified for not necessarily selfadjoint algebras by the authors with Read, Hay and other coauthors. Our breakthrough relies in part on establishing several strong variants of C*-algebraic results of Brown relating to hereditary subalgebras, proximinality, deeper facts about $L+L^*$ for a left ideal $L$ in a C*-algebra, noncommutative Urysohn lemmas, etc. We also prove several other approximation results in $C^*$-algebras and various subspaces of $C^*$-algebras, related to open and closed projections, and technical $C^*$-algebraic results of Brown.

Creación y traducción en la España romántica (1830-1850)

Luis Pegenaute

2MASS photometry and kinematical studies of open cluster NGC 188

W. H. Elsanhoury, A. A. Haroon, N. V. Chupina et al.

In this paper, we present our results for the photometric and kinematical studies of old open cluster NGC 188. We determined various astrophysical parameters like limited radius, core and tidal radii, distance, luminosity and mass functions, total mass, relaxation time etc. for the cluster using 2MASS catalog. We obtained the cluster's distance from the Sun as 1721+/-41 pc and log (age)= 9.85+/-0.05 at Solar metallicity. The relaxation time of the cluster is smaller than the estimated cluster age which suggests that the cluster is dynamically relaxed. Our results agree with the values mentioned in the literature. We also determined the cluster's apex coordinates as (281.88 deg, -44.76 deg) using AD-diagram method. Other kinematical parameters like space velocity components, cluster center and elements of Solar motion etc. have also been computed.
