Modern Moral Philosophy

G. Anscombe

I will begin by stating three theses which I present in this paper. The first is that it is not profitable for us at present to do moral philosophy; that should be laid aside at any rate until we have an adequate philosophy of psychology, in which we are conspicuously lacking. The second is that the concepts of obligation, and duty—moral obligation and moral duty, that is to say—and of what is morally right and wrong, and of the moral sense of “ought,” ought to be jettisoned if this is psychologically possible; because they are survivals, or derivatives from survivals, from an earlier conception of ethics which no longer generally survives, and are only harmful without it. My third thesis is that the differences between the wellknown English writers on moral philosophy from Sidgwick to the present day are of little importance.

Charting the “Geography of the Heart”: The Diyanet’s Civilizational Vision and Its European Frontiers

Tuğberk Yakarlar, Efe Peker

Recent scholarship has studied the extensive transformation of Turkey’s Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) over the past two decades as embodying a form of religious populism that mobilizes civilizational antagonisms. Based on a directed qualitative content analysis of Friday sermons, official publications, online material, broadcasts, and public statements by Diyanet leaders, this article makes three contributions. First, while confirming that the Diyanet promotes the civilizational unity of the ummah and casts Turkey as the spiritual custodian of a transhistorical Islamic world, the analysis shows that anti-elitist framings characteristic of populism are barely present in its rhetoric. Second, the article provides a detailed examination of gönül coğrafyası (geography of the heart), a widely invoked yet understudied concept through which the Diyanet reimagines Ottoman-Islamic heritage as a sacred topography of civilizational belonging and responsibility. Third, it examines how Europe is situated both outside and within this imagined geography: at once a constitutive and menacing “other” marked by Islamophobia and cultural decay yet also a moral frontier inhabited by Muslim diasporas through whom Turkish Islam extends its reach. By drawing such symbolic boundaries, the Diyanet frames Islam as both religious patrimony and ethical alternative to Western modernity, portraying itself as a key actor in the re-sacralization of modern life across borders.

Improving stroke awareness through a culturally adapted audiovisual intervention in the United Arab Emirates

Michelle Cherfane, Michelle Cherfane, Michelle Cherfane et al.

ObjectivesThis study evaluates the effectiveness of a brief, culturally tailored educational video in improving stroke-related knowledge among residents of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).MethodsA pre-post intervention study was conducted with 407 UAE residents aged 25 years and older. Participants viewed a 3-min educational video addressing stroke symptoms, risk factors, and preventive strategies. Stroke knowledge was measured using a structured questionnaire immediately before and after the video. Statistical analyses included paired t-tests, repeated measures ANOVA, and linear regression models.ResultsStroke knowledge significantly increased following the intervention (mean score: 20.80 pre-test to 23.53 post-test; p < 0.001), with notable improvements in identifying symptoms and risk factors. Regression analyses indicated that female gender, higher education, and healthy lifestyle practices positively influenced knowledge gains, whereas older age was associated with smaller improvements.ConclusionA brief, culturally relevant audiovisual intervention effectively enhances stroke-related knowledge. Such scalable educational tools should be integrated into global public health strategies to promote earlier stroke recognition and intervention.

The relevance of implementing the employee digital profile as an element of the employer’s HR policy

O. V. Shcherbakova

The subject. Economic, technological and geopolitical changes are leading to the digitalization of virtually all structures of the labor market: from the process of production and human resources management to the organization of the workplace. The use of new digital technologies makes it possible to give up routine human labor, contribute to improving the quality of working life of employees and employers, and increase industrial production, which means economic growth of the state. Thus, in accordance with the National Security Strategy, approved by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated July 2, 2021 No. 400, the situation in the production industry is one of the key criteria of Russia's competitiveness and contributes to the strengthening of the state's defense capability. Ensuring Russia's independence and competitiveness was also announced to be the main goal of the Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation, approved by Presidential Decree No. 642 dated December 1, 2016. On the other hand, the use of new technologies may have time-delayed risks. The most important risk today is the increasing release of labor force and mass cuts of jobs requiring average qualifications, as well as dismissal of employees due to failure to pass tests because of the lack of skills in digital tools. The purpose of the study was to substantiate the urgent character of the implementation of digital profile programs as a part of the employer's personnel policy to achieve the objectives set in the National Security Strategy of the Russian Federation dated 2021.The methodology of comprehensive research, including methods of document analysis, comparative analysis, secondary use of sociological and economic data were used.Main results. The study shows that the use of the employee digital profile programs will allow the employer to identify weaknesses in any of the employee’s skills well in advance, and to pave individual learning pathway, based on his/her preferences, hobbies and intentions, in order to upgrade the skills. It is deemed that the competence of employees is a factor for transfer of any business to digitalization. This policy of the employer will allow to cover for low-quality job cut and give personnel the minimum knowledge that makes it possible to acquire information on modern information technologies, be able to use it to solve the set problems and have necessary skills and technology, which will facilitate solution of the problems. Ultimately, these are tools to achieve the tasks set by the state in the framework of the state's defensive capability and competitiveness. At the same time, the lack of normative methodologies for the creation and operation of employee digital profiles and comprehensive scientific research predetermine increasing risks of violation of personal data of employees, privacy of employees, as well as discrimination in making legally significant decisions. Today there are no normative standards of data processing and system interaction, which leads to the diminution of guarantees of employees' rights in terms of respect for personal data and other data in terms of classified information.

Study of the laws of internal friction in magnetic fluids with a strongly developed thixotropic nanostructure

Bolotov Aleksander, Novikova Olga, Novikov Vladislav

Due to their unique physical properties, magnetic fluids are promising for use in bearings, seals, sliding guides, and other devices of modern technology. Some restrictions on their use are imposed by the tendency of magnetic fluids to lose colloidal stability and structure formation in strong magnetic fields. Increasing the stability of a colloid by reducing the size of the dispersed particles of the magnetic fluid is limited by the Heisenberg uncertainty relation, on the condition of maintaining their ferromagnetic state. The search for ways to reduce internal friction in technical devices with magnetic fluids having a highly developed thixotropic nanostructure is important from a practical point of view. Using a device, simulating the operation of a magnetohydrostatic bearing, the rheological characteristics of a fluid nanostructured by a magnetic field, which is a colloidal system with a dispersed phase of magnetite particles (10 vol.%) and a dispersion medium of silicon organic fluid PESV-2, were studied. The dynamic viscosity of the magnetic fluid was about 0.05 Pa.s at 20°C. It has been established that the process of structuring a magnetic fluid in an external field can last hundreds of hours and depends mainly on the viscosity of the dispersion medium and the concentration of magnetite. It has been revealed that the motion of a cylinder with a terminal velocity begins only at shear stresses exceeding the limiting static stress and proceeds at a constant velocity. The breakdown of the structure begins after the shear stress exceeds the critical value. The critical stress is introduced to compare the strength of the structure of different fluids. The value of the critical stress was determined with an accuracy of up to 50 Pa by analyzing the curves of the change in the sliding speed with time. It has been established that the temperature dependence of the critical shear stress is very sharp and close to exponential.

Impact of internal business communication on the employees commitment in tourist enterprises

Novaković-Božić Nataša, Perić Goran, Cogoljević Vladan

Internal communication is a fundamental component of the company's successful development and has a direct impact on the efficiency, commitment, satisfaction and motivation of employees. Internal communication is directly related to the company's goals and represents the basis of strategic management. Companies should strive to establish an optimal system of internal communication, in order to build quality relations among employees, team spirit, commitment, improvement of the motivation system, as well as an incentive for innovation and initiative. The aim of this paper is to analyze the impact of internal business communication on the commitment of employees in tourism companies. Research results show that internal business communication has a positive impact on employee commitment. Managers in companies that deal with tourism must take into account the advantages of internal business communication and the opportunities brought by its adequate use, when it comes to the impact on the commitment of employees. Modern tourism companies in the world pay more and more attention to internal communication and its effects, so Serbian tourism companies also follow the example of positive business practices and thus improve the commitment of employees.
