The journal coverage of Web of Science and Scopus: a comparative analysis

P. Mongeon, Adèle Paul-Hus

Bibliometric methods are used in multiple fields for a variety of purposes, namely for research evaluation. Most bibliometric analyses have in common their data sources: Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science (WoS) and Elsevier’s Scopus. The objective of this research is to describe the journal coverage of those two databases and to assess whether some field, publishing country and language are over or underrepresented. To do this we compared the coverage of active scholarly journals in WoS (13,605 journals) and Scopus (20,346 journals) with Ulrich’s extensive periodical directory (63,013 journals). Results indicate that the use of either WoS or Scopus for research evaluation may introduce biases that favor Natural Sciences and Engineering as well as Biomedical Research to the detriment of Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities. Similarly, English-language journals are overrepresented to the detriment of other languages. While both databases share these biases, their coverage differs substantially. As a consequence, the results of bibliometric analyses may vary depending on the database used. These results imply that in the context of comparative research evaluation, WoS and Scopus should be used with caution, especially when comparing different fields, institutions, countries or languages. The bibliometric community should continue its efforts to develop methods and indicators that include scientific output that are not covered in WoS or Scopus, such as field-specific and national citation indexes.

The effect of dynamic assessment models on L2 listening and speaking anxiety

Abbas Zarei, Elham Shishegarha

Reducing anxiety in foreign language learning has long been a concern for many teachers. This study focused on exploring the effects of three dynamic assessment models on L2 speaking and listening anxiety. The participants were 120 pre-intermediate Iranian learners of English at a language institute in Qazvin, Iran. The learners were randomly assigned to four groups (three experimental groups and one control group). Before the treatment, the students’ homogeneity was checked using Oxford Placement Test (OPT). Then, all the groups were given listening and speaking anxiety questionnaires as pretests. During 10 sessions, the first group received listening and speaking instruction using Buddof’s Learning Potential Measurement Approach (LPM); the second group was treated with Guthke’s Lerntest Approach; the third group was treated with Testing-the-Limits Approach. Lastly, the control group was taught conventionally in a teacher-fronted way. The same questionnaires were given to the participants in the twelfth session as posttests. Data were analyzed using two one-way analysis of covariance procedures. Significant differences were found among the groups’ listening and speaking anxiety mean scores on the posttests after controlling for the initial differences. Those experimental groups that received testing-the-limits and Lerntest approaches had a lower level of listening and speaking anxiety on the posttest. It was concluded that employing dynamic assessment models can decrease speaking and listening anxiety among EFL learners and enhance their productivity. The findings can have important implications for students, teachers and materials designers.

Relationship of sleep duration and sleep quality with health-related quality of life in patients on hemodialysis in Neyshabur

Minasadat Hosseini, Maryam Nasrabadi, Ensiyeh Mollanoroozy et al.

Background: As a public health priority, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is associated with some factors like sleep disorders. Taking this into consideration, this study aimed at investigating the relationship between sleep duration and sleep quality with HRQoL in patients on hemodialysis. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out among 176 patients on hemodialysis who were admitted to the dialysis ward of 22 Bahman hospital and a private renal clinic in Neyshabur (a city in North-East of Iran) in 2021. Sleep duration and quality were measured using an Iranian version of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and HRQoL was evaluated with the Iranian version of a 12-Item Short Form Survey (SF-12). To analyze the data and examine the independent association of sleep duration and quality with HRQoL, multiple linear regression model was performed. Results: The mean age of the participants was 51.6 ± 16.4 and 63.6% were male. Moreover, 55.1% and 5.7% of subjects reported a sleep duration shorter than 7 h and equal to or more than 9 h, respectively, and the value prevalence of poor sleep quality was reported as 78.2%. Furthermore, the reported overall score of HRQoL was 57.6 ± 17.9. According to the adjusted models, poor sleep quality was negatively associated with the total HRQoL score (B = −14.5, P < 0.001). Shedding light on sleep duration and Physical Component Summary (PCS), the result indicated that insufficient sleep duration (<7 h) had a borderline negative association with PCS (B = −5.96, p = 0.049). Conclusions: Sleep duration and quality have important effects on HRQoL in patients on hemodialysis. Therefore, in line with improving sleep quality and HRQoL among these patients, essential interventions should be planned and performed.

Bibliometric analysis of the global research trends and hotspots in chordoma from 2000 to 2020.

Cuicui Chang, Kai Tang, Yifan Gao et al.

Introduction
Chordoma is formed from embryonic residues or ectopic chordae and locally aggressive or malignant tumors. We visually analyzed the research tendency and hotspot of chordoma.
Methods
The bibliometric analysis was conducted from the Web of Science Core Collection database over the past two decades. The term and strategies were as follows: "TS = (chordoma) OR TS = (chordoblastoma) OR TS = (chordocarcinoma) OR TS = (chordoepithelioma) OR TS = (chordosarcoma) OR TS = (notochordoma). AND Language: English. AND Reference Type: Article OR Review". A total of 2,118 references were retrieved and used to make a visual analysis by VOSviewer 1.6.15.
Results
The chordoma was on a steady rise and chordoma but remained the focus of scholars and organizations over the last two decades. The Chinese institutions and scholars lacked cooperation with their counterparts in other countries. The citations of documents and co-citation analysis of cited references suggested that M.L. McMaster, B.P. Walcott, P. Bergh, and S. Stacchiotti were leading researchers in this field of chordoma and their papers had been widely accepted and inspired recent researches. Keywords associated with recent chemotherapy, PD-1-related immunotherapy, and SMARCB1/integrase interactor 1 (INI1) in chordoma were a shortage of research and there may be more research ideas in the future by scholars. The research of chordoma will continue to be the hotspot.
Conclusions
Thus, explaining the molecular mechanism and potential role of transcriptional inhibition and immunologic responses to SMARCB1/INI1-negative poorly differentiated chordoma will be available for preclinical experiments and clinical trials and lead to new therapeutic opportunities for chordoma patients.

Problems of Academic Writing: Lexical Errors, their Causes and Correction Strategies

O. L. Dobrynina

Lexical errors in students’ English writing may be caused by lexical interference, multiple meaning and synonymy of Russian and English words. Russian students studying English as a foreign language often have little notion of the English or Russian word connotation and cannot analyze the word meaning; consequently they make a lot of lexical errors in translating their ideas into English. Typical students’ errors and mistakes include usage of a direct word meaning instead of a figurative one, transfer of the given word collocation into all possible collocations of this word, errors in selecting the contextual meaning of a multiple meaning word. We use some methods in teaching students to analyze the contextual meaning of the word and to find the English word for adequate translation: explanation of some problematic situations, cross-lingual matching and translation comparison. As a result students gain metacognitive skills to classify the obtained information and to organize it into linked structures, to analyze the contextual word meaning, to overcome vocabulary disparity and word sense disambiguation.

Dialogue between Language and Literature: A dialogical analysis of Gloria Anzaldúa’s El Sonavabitche and its implications

Orison Marden Bandeira de Melo Junior

This article aims at discussing the role linguistic studies play in literary studies based on the theoretical framework of the Circle (Bakhtin, Voloshinov, and Medvedev) and the implications in undergraduate English Language Teacher Education Programs of adopting the conception of (literary) language propounded by the Russian authors. Methodologically, away from theoretical extremes, viz., formalism and social determinism, not only does it present the proposal for literary analysis suggested by the Circle, by means of which the linguistic material of the work strives for social significance, but, based on this understanding, it also points to some structural elements of the poem El sonavabitche by Gloria Anzaldúa. This poem, selected as a representative of the Chicano Literature, a segment of contemporary American Literature, brings the experience of illegal Mexican workers in the United States close to that of slaves in that country (social significance). These elements referred especially to the crossing of the workers, their “animalization,” and the “hunt” of fugitives. Based on this theoretical-analytical work, we perceived that the study of literature written in English in undergraduate English Language Teacher Education Programs in the confluence between language and literature mobilizes a huge amount of material by teachers and students and that the dialogue between these areas is fundamental to the analysis/understanding of literary works in their original texts, which even allows the knowledge of the language as a system to be enriched.

Keywords: the (Bakhtin) Circle, language and literature in the classroom, El Sonavabitche, Language Teacher Education programs.
