Public Archaeology in Nepal: Now and in the next 10 years

Neel Kamal Chapagain

In Nepal – and perhaps true in other South Asian countries as well, the term ‘public archaeology’ is not very frequently used among heritage professionals. Though it exists in limited use, largely the heritage practice including archaeology in Nepal is experts or authority driven. Perhaps the primary reason for this is the lack of a critical mass of archaeologists and broader heritage practitioners as well as a general lack of awareness among the public. There are disciplinary crisis situations prevalent across heritage related studies and practice areas in Nepal. However, with the increasing landscape of academic programmes and professional awareness among younger generations, we can be hopeful. Hence, I would expect that we will be able to create sufficient interests among students and younger professionals towards archaeology and heritage.

Blogging about the End Times: Dealing with the Fringes of Archaeology

Johan Normark

The 2012-phenomenon is based on the idea that something important was expected to occur on December 21, 2012, a date associated with the ancient Maya Long Count calendar. Even though the date has passed, the overall phenomenon is unlikely to disappear because the dominant themes of the end of the world and/or a transformation of consciousness can be found in other ‘alternative’ histories. These non-academic histories are ultimately apocalyptic in nature. The 2012-phenomenon is also an example of an ‘incorporeal hyperobject’, i.e. an object widely distributed and repeated. It is not anchored in a specific time-space unit but it is manifested in many different corporeal objects. The 2012-phenomenon is different from the academic Mayanist incorporeal hyperobject because each of them uses different distinctions of what exists or not. These different objects cannot communicate directly in different media ecologies since different distinctions have formed each one. Hence, there can never be a sincere understanding of each camp. Only by perturbing another object can information be translated into meaning. The blog is such a medium that can affect incorporeal hyperobjects. This article discusses the way one blog has interacted with the 2012-phenomenon.

TCP-AP Enhanced Behaviour With rt-Winf And Node Count: boosted-TCP-AP

Luis Barreto

Congestion control in wireless networks is strongly dependent on the dynamics and instability of wireless links. Therefore, it is very difficult to accurately evaluate the characteristics of the wireless links. It is known that TCP experiences serious performance degradation problems in wireless networks. New congestion control mechanisms, such as TCP-AP, do not evaluate accurately the capacity and available link bandwidth in wireless networks. In this paper we propose new congestion control protocol for wireless networks, based in TCP-AP. We name the protocol boosted-TCP-AP. It relies on the MAC layer information gathered by a new method to accurately estimate the available bandwidth and the path capacity over a wireless network path (rt-Winf), and also takes into consideration the node path count. The new congestion control mechanism is evaluated in different scenarios in wireless mesh and ad-hoc networks, and compared against several new approaches for wireless congestion control. It is shown that boosted-TCP-AP outperforms the base TCP-AP, showing its stable behavior and better channel utilization.
