Muslim–Jewish relations have a long and complex history. However, notions that all Jews and Muslims are eternal enemies are proven wrong both historically and by today’s survey data. A comprehensive review of the available survey data from the last two decades provides a glimpse into the views of Muslims and Jews of each other in countries where both communities are a minority. It is based on 52 surveys from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, the U.K., and the U.S. 39 surveys include samples of Muslim respondents (38,000 in total) and 18 surveys include samples of Jewish respondents (52,000 in total). Five of these surveys include both Muslim and Jewish subsamples. Many Muslims and Jews acknowledge that the other community suffers from discrimination, albeit to varying degrees. Jews often see Islam and Muslim extremists as a threat to Jews, but most Jews, more than society in general, seem to distinguish between Muslim extremists and Muslims in general. Antisemitic attitudes are significantly higher among Muslims than among the general population in all surveys, even though the majority of Muslims in most European countries and in the United States do not exhibit antisemitic attitudes. The differences in anti-Jewish attitudes between Muslims and non-Muslims do not disappear when controlling for sociodemographic factors.

In the 1930s, the Polish-language Orthodox periodicals appeared on the press and the publishing market. Their recipients were the Orthodox believers living mainly in the eastern areas of the Second Polish Republic, and their creators were the Orthodox Polish intelligentsia, including the clergy. One of such magazines was ‘Przegląd Prawosławny’, published from January to August 1939 in Grodno. The editor in charge of the magazine was Fr. Leonidas Kasperski, and the publisher is the Orthodox Scientific and Publishing Institute. The analyzed magazine was partly of the local nature, as a lot of space was devoted to the life and activities of the Orthodox believers from the Nowogródek and Białystok voivodeships. Polish culture, history, language and traditions were promoted in ‘Przegląd Prawosławny’. They wrote about the affairs of the contemporary Church in Poland and around the world, as well as about its dignitaries. The life and activities of the Orthodox Polish patriots from the past eras were described.

Bartłomieja i św. Jadwigi. Nie ujmuje to w żaden sposób osiągnięciom dwóch pozostałych duszpasterzy, dzięki którym stawiszyńscy parafianie mogą podziwiać zachowane do dziś zabytki sztuki sakralnej. Tekst ten stanowi jedynie przyczynek do dalszych badań, które należy pogłębić o wnikliwą analizę archiwaliów przechowywanych w Archiwum Diecezjalnym we Włocławku.

In France and Poland where journalisme littéraire and reportaż have enjoyed long and rich traditions, it is curious that Elena Poniatowska’s literary journalism has attracted little attention. The reasons differ in degree, but translations efforts in both countries suggest that the French and the Poles see Poniatowska strictly as a Latin American Boom writer and, as such, favor her fiction over her socially-engaged literary journalism. By examining the international literary journalistic and reportage traditions inscribed within Poniatowska’s most celebrated crónica, La noche de Tlatelolco, this article attempts to counter these current trends in France and in Poland. A daughter of France with royal Polish blood, Poniatowska might have focused her attention this past half century on the troubled history of her adopted nation, Mexico, and on its victimized and marginalized peoples, but her journalistic themes, oral histories, interviewing techniques and literary talents are as universal as those from any French or Polish grand reporter.

The article analyses the struggle of Anglo-American relations connected to slaves and maritime rights on the sea from 1831 to 1842. The study is based on monographs, reports, treaties and correspondences between the two countries from the explosion of the Comet case in 1831 to the signing of the Webster–Ashburton treaty in 1842. This study focuses on three fundamental issues: the appearance of Comet, Encomium, Enterprise, Hermosa and Creole as international incidents with regards to British-American relations; the view of both countries on the abolition of slavery, maritime rights as well as the dispute over issues to resolve arising from these incidents; the results of British-American diplomacy to release slaves and maritime rights after the signing of the Webster–Ashburton treaty. The study found that the American slave ships were special cases in comparison with the previous controversies in bilateral relations. The American slave vessels sailed to the British colonies due to bad weather conditions and a slave rebellion on board. In fact, Great Britain and the United States had never dealt with a similar case, so both sides failed to find a unified view regarding the differences in the laws and policies of the two countries on slavery. The history of British-American relations demonstrated that under the pressures of the border dispute in Maine and New Brunswick, the affairs were not resolved. In addition, it could have had more of an impact on the relationship between the two countries, eventually p the two countries into a war. In that situation, the diplomatic and economic solutions given to the abolition of slavery and maritime rights were only temporary. However, the international affairs related to the American slave vessels paved the way for the settlement of maritime rights for British-American relations in the second half of 19th century.

The occurrence of two epiphytic moss species, Orthotrichum alpestre Bruch & Schimp. and O. schimperi Hammar, in the moss flora of Poland is discussed. The former represents an entirely new country record based on a specimen collected from the Polish Eastern Carpathians, whereas the latter is reinstated as a member of the Polish moss flora. The complex and entangled taxonomic and nomenclatural history of O. schimperi is outlined, sources of its confusion are discussed, and two correctly determined specimens from Poland are cited. The two species are briefly characterized and illustrated, and a key to the genera and species of Polish orthotrichaceous mosses is presented.

– głównie polskich Żydów i przedstawicieli tzw. „emigracji solidarnościowej” lat 80. The article concerns selected aspects of Polish emigration to Switzerland. The reasons for leaving homeland and the scope of activities of Polish diaspora (political, scientific/scholar, cultural, artisan) are outlined. This territorially small, federal state in Western Europe was a country of great opportunities. Several eminent Poles, known from history textbooks, such as Kościuszko, Sienkiewicz, Paderewski or Narutowicz, found refuge or even new home and second homeland there. Much more numerous were (and still are) Poles about whom the history has nothing to say, but who with their hard everyday work contributed to the development of this Alpine country. At present, the number of Poles and people of Polish descent in Switzerland is estimated at 18–20 thousands. Among them are primarily the descendants of Poles who stayed in this country after the World War II or were forced into exile by the authorities of the communist Poland in the 1960s and 1970s – chiefly of Polish Jews and members of the so-called “Solidarity emigration” of the 1980s.

Paschalis Jakubowicz and Three kontusz sashes in the Collections of the Museum of the Jagiellonian University The Museum of the Jagiellonian University holds three belts associated with the activities of Paschalis Jakubowicz, a producer of kontusz saches in the period of the Great Sejm. One of such belts, which features a paschal lamb between the letters PI, was woven in a persjarnia (a workshop where kontusz belts were made) established by Jakubowicz in Lipków near Warsaw. Another one, which features the letters PI, originates from a weaver’s workshop in Lyon, which produces kontusz belts intended for the Polish market, also commissioned by Jakubowicz. In the case of the last one, which features the letters FS, at this stage of research it is difficult to establish whether it was made in Lyon or whether it should be considered a product of the Kraków workshop, which received an order from Jakubowicz.

Introduction: The new regulations called the “oncological package” were implemented in Poland on 1 January 2015. The issuance of the Diagnosis and Oncological Treatment Card initiates a path of rapid diagnosis and therapy. The new regulations also encompass the diagnostic process in suspected thyroid carcinoma, which is the leading endocrine gland cancer. In 2014, 162 new cases of thyroid cancer were noted in Świętokrzyskie Province in Poland. Before the rapid diagnostic procedure is implemented, the risk of malignancy must be evaluated, which is of particular importance in the case of suspected carcinoma of the thyroid gland due to the great prevalence of benign thyroid nodules. The risk of thyroid carcinoma is evaluated by the analysis of the medical history and proper interpretation of ultrasonographic images of focal lesions. Aim: The aim of this study was to analyse the knowledge of primary care physicians about clinical and ultrasonographic features of high-risk thyroid tumours and to assess whether the Diagnosis and Oncological Treatment Card is used correctly for initiation of a rapid diagnostic process in patients with suspected thyroid carcinoma. Material and methods: The analysis involved the results of thyroid ultrasound scans and medical history data collected during the first visit from all patients who, in the period from 1 January 2015 to 30 September 2016, were referred to the Department of Endocrinology of Świętokrzyskie Oncology Centre with the Diagnosis and Oncological Treatment Card issued by a primary care physician due to a suspicion of thyroid cancer. The authors evaluated the presence of clinical or ultrasonographic features of high-risk thyroid tumours. The analysis involved records of 95 patients. Results: None of the patients presented clinical features of thyroid carcinoma. The phenotype of focal lesions represented high-risk features in merely 21% of the patients; the most common ultrasonographic feature was hypoechogenicity (70% of patients). Oncological diagnostic procedures (fine-needle aspiration biopsy) confirmed a malignancy in only 1 case; it was a patient with high-risk ultrasonographic features (1/20 patients – 5%). None of the patients with a benign phenotype was diagnosed with thyroid carcinoma. Conclusions: 1) The Diagnosis and Oncological Treatment Card is not used properly by primary care physicians in the diagnosis of thyroid lesions. 2) When issuing the Diagnosis and Oncological Treatment Card, primary care physicians do not use the knowledge about clinical or ultrasonographic features that suggest a high risk of malignancy.

Historic buildings in Poland are largely neglected objects that small percentage is preserved in its original form. Unrelenting in the case of historic buildings is a time that brings with it the natural processes of aging of buildings, but also the history of the object which is often marked by military conflicts, fires or even incompetently carried out reconstruction. Nowadays historic buildings are also destroyed by the rapid development of infrastructure and residential construction. This development could lead to changes of water in the soil, make changes in the geologic al structure or cause exposure of the historic building to the new influences (eg. traffic vibrations), to which building has not been subjected so far. Vibrations are often omitted in environmental issues, although the protection against noise and vibration has its place in the Law on Environmental Protection. This article presents the methodology for the measurement and interpretation of vibration influence on historic buildings and the assessment methods of technical condition of historic building on the example of dynamic measurements made on St. Nicholas Church in Krakow. The importance of well-done crack-by-crack documentation and characterization of damages based on damage index is shown. Difficulties that can be encountered when determining the causes of technical condition of historic buildings are also shown. Based on the example of the Church in the article are also given the possible protection solutions of historic structures from vibrations.

The evolution of Lithuanian accounting has a long history and is rather complicated. It was influenced by different countries, especially by Tsarist Russia, Germany, France, Poland and the Soviet Union. Differ-ent factors had an impact and formed the Lithuanian accounting system, and they have defined develop-ment tendencies for it. The aim of this research is to investigate Lithuanian accounting development phases and tendencies. The research methods consist of analysing scientific papers of Lithuanian authors, a retrospective analy-sis, the historical approach, inductive and deductive methods, systematisation, comparison and a sum-mary of the information. From the chronological and historical perspectives, the following Lithuanian accounting development phases were distinguished: (1) accounting origin for the period of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (1251–1795); (2) Lithuania’s accounting status during the period of occupation by Tsarist Russia (1795–1914) and World War I (1914–1918); (3) the condition and regulation of account-ing during the inter-war period (1918–1940) and World War II in Lithuania; (4) accounting organization and regulation during the Soviet occupation period in Lithuania (1944–1990); (5) accounting status and problems in Independent Lithuania (1990–2015). The article investigates the key elements of regulation, and the achievements and problems of each Lithuanian accounting development phase.

Professor Marian Kucała as a dialectologist The paper presents Marian Kucała’s dialectological work in the chronological order. Particular attention has been given to his greatest dialectological achievement, the Porównawczy słownik trzech wsi małopolskich (1957; ‘A comparative dictionary of three villages in Lesser Poland’), emphasizing its superior cognitive and methodological qualities. While discussing Kucała’s various articles, we indicate his originality and ingenuity. Some of his papers refer to linguistic phenomena from his native village of Więciórka, while others cover the whole of the Polish dialectal area. One work that distinguishes itself among them, is the popular title Twoja mowa cię zdradza (1994a, 2002a; ‘Your speech betrays you’) in which Kucała presents to the unqualified reader the most important of Polish dialectal phenomena in an interesting and easy to understand way. While discussing Professor M. Kucała’s dialectological work, one should constantly bear in mind that these rich, diversified and grand achievements constitute only a part of his oeuvre which simultaneously includes works on the history of Polish and the contemporary Polish literary language.

In all Visegrad countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia), as well as in Armenia, a large proportion of the housing stock consists of blocks of flats erected during the Communist era. Those quarters have become an identical part of the cityscape inducing intense scientific discussion in the field of social sciences including human geography addressing such topics as architectural and spatial planning of housing estates, the analysis of society settled in those blocks of flats or even the psychological effects of the uniform environment on individuals. Following the systemic transformation the possible rehabilitation of the gradually deteriorating housing stock and environment meant a further challenge. Although examples from the West European countries provide significant help and information regarding housing estate rehabilitation, nevertheless due to the different scale of the problem, the altering history and the embeddedness of the topic, discussion on regional level is not only promising but necessary at the same time. This paper focuses on the important questions of large housing estates (LHEs) with special attention to the Visegrad countries and Armenia.
