This article deals with a historical textbook on orthography published in 1850 by Jan Slavomír Tomíček. It is shown that this book is in many ways a 'hidden' contrastive grammar, because it contrasts a variety of Czech phenomena with German equivalents. The article attempts to explain this striking feature of Tomíček's book.

Abstract The article discusses the interconnections between the international trade emerging in the 18th century and the middling merchant family Cramer in Trondheim, Norway. It reveals until now little – known details about the copper trade, with particular emphasis on how it impacted the lives of the Cramer family. Using the Cramer familys`relationship with international trade as a focus, the article also draws attention to how major economic processes may affect individuals, but also how individuals participate in, and influence, these processes.

The article focuses on the analysis of various kinds of cultural transfer in the translation of a Yiddish text from the 18th century into Czech. The main intention is to confront the functional skopos-theories and the hermeneutic approaches with a highly specific translation and to show which strategies are effective to get over the cultural and language gap between the source text and the target text. Furthermore the analysis of the translation concentrates on following aims: 1) On the base of the particular translation we examine the correlations between the inter- and intratextual coherence; 2) We consider the possibilities and limits of the pragmatic explicitation in the examined type of text. 3) Finally we rethink on the base of the analyzed translation the limits of the cultural transfer from the source culture in the target culture.

In this article , the author looks more closely at the Norwegian work that has been done to make such sources available to the public, as well as discussing the potential uses of these statistics in historical studies.

ABSTRACT: Despite the fact that there are similar trajectories and turning points between Finland’s and other European countries’ responses to the Holocaust, it is still the case that trends in Holocaust studies and key debates within the field have had less impact on Finnish understanding of the Holocaust than one might suspect. Instead, as this article examines, the way in which Finland’s Holocaust awareness has been developing since the end of the war in general, and in the 2000s in particular, has been intimately linked with the Finnish understanding of its own role in WWII. This tendency was most clearly illustrated in the controversy that took place during 2003 and 2004 with the publication of Elina Sana’s book Luovutetut [The Extradited].
