Introduction

It would be naive to consider the question of global political order without engaging in debates about theology. Not only has it become clear that religious conflicts drive political ones, the very attempt to move “beyond” religion must be understood in terms of its theological meaning. The postsecular turn has not meant a return to religion so much as a realization that secularization was never a turn away from religion in the first place but rather itself a specific theological alternative among many. Accordingly, if our deepest political conflicts arise as consequences of theological disputes, we must address theology directly…

Mapping spatial inequality: unsafe child feces disposal practices across 707 districts in India

Margubur Rahaman, U. Venkatesh, Gurucharan Karmakar et al.

Abstract Background Unsafe child feces disposal is a recognized public health concern linked to adverse child health outcomes. While previous studies have examined its impact, the spatial heterogeneity and determinants of unsafe child feces disposal in India remain underexplored. This study addresses this research gap by investigating the spatial distribution and key factors influencing unsafe disposal practices across Indian districts. Method This study utilized data from the National Family Health Survey-5 (2019–2021) to conduct a comprehensive spatial analysis. Univariate and Bivariate Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) clustering were employed to identify spatial patterns of unsafe child feces disposal. To examine the determinants, a Spatial Error Model (SEM) was applied, while Fairlie decomposition was used to quantify the contribution of various factors to regional disparities. Results The Univariate LISA analysis identified 170 hotspot districts characterized by high levels of unsafe child feces disposal, primarily located in Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam, and Tamil Nadu. The SEM analysis revealed that maternal education, household wealth, sanitation access, and religious affiliation are significant determinants. Hotspot districts demonstrated a 22% higher likelihood of unsafe disposal compared to cold spots. Decomposition results indicated that household wealth accounted for 65.3% of the observed disparity, followed by sanitation (17.1%), religion (7.4%), media exposure (4.5%), and education (3.2%). Conclusion This study underscores the pronounced spatial disparities in unsafe child feces disposal across Indian districts. Addressing these disparities requires targeted interventions focusing on improving sanitation, enhancing maternal education, and leveraging media outreach to promote safe disposal practices.

மார்க்கிசிய நோக்கில் உப்புவயல் / Uppuvayal in Marxist Perspective

அ. வெங்கடேஸ்வரி / A. Venkateswari

Society consists of various platforms like economy, politics, religion, education, art, literature etc. Among them, economics is the foundation of a society. Other areas of life and society are based on economic values. The economic infrastructure affects everything in society. The economy also defines the living standards of the people. Politics, culture, and religion also affect human life to some extent. The ups and downs caused by this economic condition divide society. The rich exploit and oppresses the poor. In a civilized society, the divisions of poor-rich, ruler-ruled, master-slave, and exploiter-exploited exist. The slave system, Land tenure system are seen at different periods in social development. Economic inequality also developed various social systems such as the Democratic, Federal, Capitalist, Marxist, Communist, Fascist, and other political ideologies in society. Tamil Literature also has portrayed such instances of plot, structure and characterization. Many Tamil writers have used Marxism as a tool to structure their stories. Uppu Vayal (Salt Field) is a novel written by Sridhara Ganesan. He has portrayed the marginalized society who are working in the salt fields and their dreams shattered by the landlords. One can see such economic imbalances in this novel Uppu Vayal (Salt Field). Hence, the article ponders over the novel from a Marxist perspective to bring down the state of the suppressed people.

Den blendende musikken

Torbjørn Eftestøl

In this essay I explore the religious potential of music via ideas taken from Olivier Messiaen. I first present his categorization of music and the concepts of sound-colour and dazzlement as the ‘directional meaning’ of music. I then show how Messiaen relates this to the phenomena of natural resonance and afterimages, and based on this, I present – via Goethe and Rudolf Steiner – the notion of an etheric, evanescent or incorporeal matter. This understanding and experience of matter is then brought to bear on music. In this context the notion of a ‘religious experience’ can be understood as both referring to content and sentiment related to a religious belief, and, in a more general sense of religare (‘to bind’), as a deeper bond with the material-temporal flow of nature. This gives way to a Johannine vision of Messiaen’s musical thinking where the creative-sounding logos or ‘word’ is both spirit and matter, and where music may represent a potential awakening to this reality.

Deviation from the Orthodox

Lunneihoi Thangeo

Some events that occurred after the Christian movement became the state religion of the Roman Empire can be regarded as one sort of historical revisionism. Theodosius had sanctioned the state persecution of all those who did not uphold the Nicene version of Christianity. This resulted in the loss of many works by those who were deemed unorthodox Christians. For many, the Christian movement bifurcated, then permutated only after the Protestant Reformation. Had it not been for the discovery of some of these so-called unorthodox texts in the twentieth century, we would not have known that alternate views existed even in the distant past. This paper does not argue about Christian doctrines but rather focuses on the deliberate attempt to obliviate some early believers because they had a different interpretation of Christ and his teachings. Perhaps this is comparable to how powerful leaders today use mainstream media to promote their version of the truth and create a diversion from ground reality. Another issue is whether such censorship is justifiable. Had it not been for the unifying endeavours of the early church leaders, there might not have been a Christian community as we know of now. In the same way, if a leader of state does not present a grander-than-life narrative, perhaps there would be more chaos than order. When we weigh in such factors, do they make the effacement of some parts of reality necessary? After all, we are not talking about personal or even social morality, but institutional morality, if there is such a thing. Perhaps promoting a version of truth over another is not condemnable in the larger scheme of things but we need to admit our complicity when this happens.

Breastfeeding and weaning practices among mothers in Ghana: A population-based cross-sectional study.

Prince Kubi Appiah, Hubert Amu, Eric Osei et al.

Background
Children need good nutrition to develop proper immune mechanisms and psychosocial maturity, but malnutrition can affect their ability to realize this. Apart from the national demographic and health survey, which is carried out every 5 years, there have not been enough documented studies on child breastfeeding and weaning practices of caregivers in the Volta Region. We, therefore, examined child breastfeeding and weaning practices of mothers in the Volta Region of Ghana.
Methods
A sub-national survey method was adopted and a semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 396 mothers and their children. Descriptive and inferential statistics comprising frequency, percentage, chi-square, and logistic regression were employed in analysing the data. We defined exclusive breastfeeding as given only breast milk to an infant from a mother or a wet nurse for six months of life except drops or syrups consisting of vitamins, minerals, supplements, or medicines on medical advice, and prolonged breastfeeding as breastfeeding up to 24 months of age.
Results
The prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) was 43.7%. Mothers constituting 61.1% started breastfeeding within an hour of giving birth. In addition to breast milk, 5.1% gave fluids to their children on the first day of birth. About 66.4% started complementary feeding at 6 months, 22.0% breastfed for 24 months or beyond, while 40.4% fed their children on-demand. Child's age (AOR: 0.23, 95% CI:0.12-0.43, p<0.0001), prolonged breastfeeding (AOR: 0.41, 95%CI: 0.12-0.87, p = 0.001), mother's religion (AOR: 3.92, 95%CI: 1.23-12.61, p = 0.021), feeding practices counselled on (AOR: 1.72, 95%CI: 1.96-3.09, p = 0.023), mother ever heard about EBF (AOR: 0.43, 95%CI: 1.45-2.41, p = 0.039), child being fed from the bottle with a nipple (AOR: 1.53, 95%CI: 1.94-2.48, p = 0.003), and age at which complementary feeding was started (AOR: 17.43, 95%CI: 3.47-87.55, p = 0.008) were statistically associated with EBF.
Conclusion
Breastfeeding education has been ongoing for decades, yet there are still gaps in the breastfeeding practices of mothers. To accelerate progress towards attainment of the sustainable development goal 3 of ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages by the year 2030, we recommend innovative policies that include extensive public education to improve upon the breastfeeding and weaning practices of mothers.

DISASTER VICTIM IDENTIFICATION (DVI) TRAINING FOR MEDICAL STUDENT

Taufik Suryadi Ismail, Kulsum Binti Syarifudin

Background: Disaster victim identification (DVI) is a process of identifying the victim who died due to the disaster. Deaths due to disasters can be classified as victims of open disasters and victims of closed disasters. In the open disasters the process of identification is more difficult. Based on regulation of law in Indonesia, the identification is intended to fulfil human rights to identity, dignity and social status, autonomy rights such as inheritance, marital status, religion, insurance or other legal and social issues. Aims: The purpose of this curriculum study is to provide an overview of the DVI training process for medical students. Curriculum Discussion: Given the importance of the identification process it is necessary to be included in the medical education curriculum. The DVI training to identify victims of mass disasters uses the DVI Interpol standard. Faculty of Medicine Universitas Syiah Kuala has conducted training and simulations of DVI for medical student since 2009 until 2019. A total of 1995 students in this period have participated in the training. The DVI training for medical students is very needed as an addition to the competence of doctors in the field of disaster management. Conclusion: By joining this training, medical students have sufficient medical skills to assist in the process of DVI.

Muslim women in the mirror - the stigma of Muslim women in Poland

Maria Stojkow

The main objective of the paper is to recreate a strategy to deal with the stigma in the daily lives of Muslim women who decided to move permanently to Poland, and Polish women who decided to convert to Islam. The subject of the research is Muslim women who live in Poland and participated in biographical interviews. According to the interviews, an image of Muslim women based on what they themselves think was reconstructed. Their methods of dealing with everyday situations, which these women face in the country in which they live, and confl icts with their families of origin, are presented. In Poland, as shown by opinion polls, people originating from Muslim countries are perceived negatively. As a result, immigrants from these regions who stay in our country are stigmatised as the other, diff erent, hostile and dangerous to the society. This is the result of commonly shared negative stereotypes. A very similar fate is experienced by Polish women who have converted to Islam. Living with stigma forces those stigmatised to adopt strategies that allow them to operate in a foreign country. This situation is particularly oppressive for Muslim women, who on the one hand must deal with the stigma they carry due to their otherness in the host country, while on the other hand must follow tradition and constraints imposed by the religion and culture in which they were raised. Muslim clothing allows fast and easy categorization. Women wearing hijabs are easily identifi ed, and because of it possible stereotypes and prejudices are activated.

Imagining Religion

Jonathan Z. Smith

With this influential book of essays, Jonathan Z. Smith has pointed the academic study of religion in a new theoretical direction, one neither theological nor willfully ideological. Making use of examples as apparently diverse and exotic as the Maori cults in nineteenth-century New Zealand and the events of Jonestown, Smith shows that religion must be construed as conventional, anthropological, historical, and as an exercise of imagination. In his analyses, religion emerges as the product of historically and geographically situated human ingenuity, cognition, and curiosity-simply put, as the result of human labor, one of the decisive but wholly ordinary ways human beings create the worlds in which they live and make sense of them. "These seven essays . . . display the critical intelligence, creativity, and sheer common sense that make Smith one of the most methodologically sophisticated and suggestive historians of religion writing today. . . . Smith scrutinizes the fundamental problems of taxonomy and comparison in religious studies, suggestively redescribes such basic categories as canon and ritual, and shows how frequently studied myths may more likely reflect situational incongruities than vaunted mimetic congruities. His final essay, on Jonestown, demonstrates the interpretive power of the historian of religion to render intelligible that in our own day which seems most bizarre."-Richard S. Prolegomena to the Study of Greek Religion

J. Harrison

Jane Harrison examines the festivals of ancient Greek religion to identify the primitive "substratum" of ritual and its persistence in the realm of classical religious observance and literature. In Harrison's preface to this remarkable book, she writes that J. G. Frazer's work had become part and parcel of her "mental furniture" and that of others studying primitive religion. Today, those who write on ancient myth or ritual are bound to say the same about Harrison. Her essential ideas, best developed and most clearly put in the Prolegomena, have never been eclipsed.
