Caught Between Manga and the Graphic Novel: Two Cartoonists' Trajectories in Contemporary Argentinian “National Comics”

Diego Labra

What do Ignacio Minaverry and Ciro Berliac’s trajectories say about comics in contemporary Argentina? By crossreferencing their body of work with the discourses surrounding them, this article explores both as a blueprint for two different positioning strategies within the comics field. Growing up in thee arly 1990s, they were both brought up in a time of daunting change, as the remains of a once-mighty national comic industry finally disappeared and a nascent (imported) comic book shop circuit exposed them to new graphic narratives, such as manga. After publishing what was labeled as the “first Argentinian manga”, Minaverry “edited” his own biography/bibliography and phased out any overt “mangaesque” traits in his cartooning in order to fit into a field increasingly geared towards the graphic novel, and was rewarded for it. In contrast, Berliac publicly “transitioned” from cartoonist to “mangaka” in defiance of what he understood was the chauvinist establishment of Argentinean “national comics” in a (successful) bid to gain notoriety. As conclusion, contrasting both trajectories reveals the importance of the discursive and material tensions between "national" and foreign in a peripheral comics field, playing a hefty role in its mechanics of gatekeeping and the distribution of symbolic capital.

Rabbit, Rabbit: Analysing the Hare/Rabbit Characters in Ukrainian and English Fairy Tales

Iryna Morozova, Olena Pozharytska

Artistic images of animal characters in beast stories studied through the prism of national mentality reveal specific animal-human concepts rooted in the readers’ mindsets. This essay focuses on the hare/rabbit as a popular character in animal tales, with an attempt to enhance intercultural relations in the Ukrainian/English world by explaining the peculiarities of the surrounding reality present in beast stories. The paper discloses similar and distinctive characteristics of animal stories on two levels, that is, by contrasting the author’s literary tale with the folk-tale, and by studying the collective image of hare in Ukrainian folk-tales against the background of Peter Rabbit from Beatrix Potter’s stories. The research does not dwell on the zoological peculiarities of the chosen animals or the Aesop fables, but highlights the psychological characteristics of the animals under study in the context of their “national identities”. The work results in disclosing a deep connection between games and animal tales; since both the storyteller’s and the audience’s mental work is based on the game-like perception of the virtual world of the story. The literary images of the hare/rabbit in Ukrainian and British tales differ radically. Ukrainian animals are presented as meek and subdued creatures relying on outside help and rarely (ranking sixth amongst animal protagonists) becoming the leading characters. In contrast, British bunnies are energetic and boisterous, trying their best to overcome any difficulties. The authors explain this fact by references to differences in the historical development of the two cultures under analysis.

The Protection of the Historic City: The Case of the Surroundings of the Lonja de la Seda in Valencia (Spain), UNESCO World Heritage

Camilla Mileto, Fernando Vegas López-Manzanares

In geographical terms, historic cities possess an inertia in regard to the modification of urban function. This explains why buildings may change over time, but the location of the functions remains. For over a thousand years, the city of Valencia has concentrated the commercial activity of its historic centre around the building of the Lonja de la Seda, its surrounding buildings, and its adjacent spaces, streets and squares. Recent constructions coexist with centuries-old buildings, witnesses to the transformations of this urban enclave, which has retained its commercial function. Although the Lonja de la Seda was declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1996, its surroundings, despite being of interest and closely linked to the protected building, were not. This article analyses the history and evolution of the built fabric and urban spaces of this complex, which represents the nerve centre for commerce in the city of Valencia. This text presents research based on studies carried out directly on the buildings in this context by the authors, as well as indirect examinations of documentation from the archives and the existing bibliography. The aim of this study is to showcase how combining material and documentary studies can lead to a broader definition of the tangible and intangible values of cultural heritage. This, in turn, could lead to the comprehensive enhancement of the historic city, where historic residential fabric and notable buildings are merely manifestations of the process for the construction of the city.

Archipelago Commons: Using the Archipelago and AMI Software to Provide Access to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Engineering Drawings, a Pilot Project

Brenden McCarthy

In this paper we examine practical applications of the Archipelago Commons software for science and technology libraries through the lens of a pilot project conducted within the Libraries at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2021. This pilot project uses Archipelago for data curation, demonstrates Archipelago’s value for sci-tech library applications, and highlights the technology experimentation that occurs during system migrations. The pilot involved deployment of a local installation of Archipelago and use of the Archipelago Multi-Importer (AMI) to create a digital collection of engineering drawings. The pilot results demonstrate the value of Archipelago as a quick and lightweight “app” for any small sci-tech library that wants to showcase their digital collections or needs to quickly replace a legacy system. After this pilot we used the same approach detailed in this paper to migrate all 4,168 images from our old database to Archipelago.  We conclude that Archipelago has value to sci-tech libraries and can be scaled to GLAM institutions of any size, with data as simple or robust as necessary for an institution’s local needs.

Elsevier Title Level Pricing: Dissecting the Bowl of Spaghetti

Curtis Brundy, Joel B. Thornton

INTRODUCTION This study will explore the issue of pricing opacity associated with prices paid by academic libraries that have recently unbundled from the Elsevier Big Deal journal package. Additionally, this study will provide metrics for assessing the fair market value (FMV) of unbundled journal packages. The pricing metrics will assist academic libraries in negotiations of subscription and open access agreements. METHODS Pricing information was gathered from five academic libraries. The data was analyzed to arrive at two key metrics (adjustment from list price and the average cost per journal) for establishing comparables, i.e., prices paid by similarly sized institutions, to assess the collective FMVs for unbundled Elsevier journal packages. RESULTS & DISCUSSION The study results show that significant variations existed in the way institutions were charged for content. Additionally, the comparables show wide variations among institutions when measured by the overall adjustment from list price and the average cost per journal. CONCLUSION The pricing metrics developed in this study, adjustment from list price (ALP) and average cost per journal (ACJ), will help libraries assess their final net prices for individual journal subscriptions. The results will be useful to administrators, collection development personnel, and negotiating teams in understanding the prices paid by other institutions for unbundled journal packages to determine FMVs.

Examining the prospects of library use data integration in university information systems : the Spanish and Greek library stakeholder's perspective

Sant-Geronikolou, Stavroula, Martínez Ávila, Daniel

Objective. To collect the richly textured viewpoints of academic librarians and students on obstacles to library integration in institutional information systems, namely student success technologies and learning analytics. The aim is to contribute with an initial set of recurring themes to baseline knowledge on Spanish and Greek public university libraries' prospects of engaging in this new type of intervention. -- Methodology. Interviews were conducted between June and November 2016 in two universities in Spain and Greece and were continuously cross-checked against current literature on the academic climate in an interdisciplinary approach. This process helped to effectively outline a conceptual framework for understanding organisational forces and operational issues that could affect the process of connecting library use data to wider student support systems. -- Results. Interviewees' feedback revealed that the practical difficulties involved in systematically tracking in-library student activity workflows and connecting them with campus-wide or even interinstitutional learning analytics initiatives are only some of the operationalisation challenges. Infrastructural capacity-related considerations, the professional development of librarians, user control and strong teacher bias concerns are all high on the stakeholder list of inhibitors that, if they are not tackled, could eventually jeopardize a co-creation and service innovation opportunity of unique value. Easiness of use, voluntariness and feedback were reported among the main criteria with which library data integration in learning analytics systems must comply. A change in data collection practices, the active pursuit of stakeholder engagement and the reconsideration of existing resources, namely infrastructures and funding, were also given as major strategic priorities for the successful implementation of this type of intervention.
