Proliferation of Hydroelectric Dams in the Andean Amazon and Implications for Andes-Amazon Connectivity

Matt Finer, Clinton N. Jenkins

Due to rising energy demands and abundant untapped potential, hydropower projects are rapidly increasing in the Neotropics. This is especially true in the wet and rugged Andean Amazon, where regional governments are prioritizing new hydroelectric dams as the centerpiece of long-term energy plans. However, the current planning for hydropower lacks adequate regional and basin-scale assessment of potential ecological impacts. This lack of strategic planning is particularly problematic given the intimate link between the Andes and Amazonian flood plain, together one of the most species rich zones on Earth. We examined the potential ecological impacts, in terms of river connectivity and forest loss, of the planned proliferation of hydroelectric dams across all Andean tributaries of the Amazon River. Considering data on the full portfolios of existing and planned dams, along with data on roads and transmission line systems, we developed a new conceptual framework to estimate the relative impacts of all planned dams. There are plans for 151 new dams greater than 2 MW over the next 20 years, more than a 300% increase. These dams would include five of the six major Andean tributaries of the Amazon. Our ecological impact analysis classified 47% of the potential new dams as high impact and just 19% as low impact. Sixty percent of the dams would cause the first major break in connectivity between protected Andean headwaters and the lowland Amazon. More than 80% would drive deforestation due to new roads, transmission lines, or inundation. We conclude with a discussion of three major policy implications of these findings. 1) There is a critical need for further strategic regional and basin scale evaluation of dams. 2) There is an urgent need for a strategic plan to maintain Andes-Amazon connectivity. 3) Reconsideration of hydropower as a low-impact energy source in the Neotropics.

The impact of cross-region industrial structure optimization on economy, carbon emissions and energy consumption: A case of the Yangtze River Delta.

Bing Zhu, Tinglong Zhang

Industry structure adjustment is an important way to solve environmental problems. The adjustment of the industrial structure across regions not only needs to meet the goals of each region, but also involves the industrial transfer between regions. The same industry in each region has differences in economic development, energy consumption and carbon emissions. So these regions can reasonably distribute industries in various regions through the industrial transfer to meet their own requirements. A cross-regional multi-objective planning model combined the data envelopment analysis method is put forward to solve the problem of the reasonable industries distribution. The representative result which is selected from the set of different preference solutions reflects the coordination of economic development and environment. In order to distinguish the effects, the results of cross-region and single-region industry structure optimization models are compared. The Yangtze River Delta as a case study is analyzed. The results show that each province can realize the reasonable distribution of industries through the industrial transfer, and complete the phased goals in the 13th Five-Year Plan. Meanwhile, the eco-efficiency of each province is improved and the difference in economy has narrowed. The case provides a basis for other regions to balance development of economy and environmental protection through regional cooperation and division of labor.

Characteristic mango price forecasting using combined deep-learning optimization model.

Xiaoya Ma, Jin Tong, Wu Huang et al.

Accurate product price forecasting is helpful for scientific decision-making and precise industrial planning. As a characteristic fruit that drives regional development, mango price prediction is of great significance to several economies. However, owing to the strong volatility of mango prices, forecasting is vulnerable to uncertainties and is very challenging. In this study, a deep-learning combination forecasting model based on a back-propagation (BP) long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network is proposed. Using daily mango price data from a large fruit wholesale trading center in China from January 2nd, 2014, to April 18th, 2022, mango price changes are learned and predicted to support the fruit industry. The results show that the root mean-square error, mean absolute percentage error, and the R2 determination coefficient of the BP-LSTM combination model are 0.0175, 0.14%, and 0.9998, respectively. The prediction results of the combined model are better than those of the separate BP and LSTM models. Furthermore, it best fits the actual price profile and has better generalizability.

Geological heritage of the Taguelft syncline (M'Goun Geopark): Inventory, assessment, and promotion for geotourism development (Central High Atlas, Morocco)

Elhassan Louz, Jamila Rais, Abdellah Ait Barka et al.

The Taguelft syncline, located south of the Béni Mellal city, is one of the synclinal basins of the central High Atlas. It contains significant geological heritage that should be inventoried, valorized, and protected. The present study aimed to inventory and evaluate the syncline's geological heritage and then propose geotourism and geodidactic promotion allowing their sustainable geoconservation. This is done by applying the University of Lausanne methodology, based on the quantitative and qualitative assessment of the scientific (considered central) and additional values. Results highlight geodiversity elements with high scientific (≃0.84) and aesthetic (≃0.85) values related to the strong representativeness of the regional geological phenomena (genesis modes of magmatic bodied, tabular structure of Jbel Sgat, gabbroic intrusion of the Ait Boulmane wrinkle). The assessment also shows that the study area hosts a valuable palaeontological heritage enclosing fossil wood, ammonites, and dinosaur remains (bones and footprints). Moreover, it has underlined an important cultural and architectural interest of the tribe of Ait Sokhmane. Taken together, the diverse geological and cultural heritage identified can constitute a valuable tool for geoconservation and geotourism purposes. Due to their high touristic and educational potential, the geosites of the syncline are a preferred tourist destination for many visitors and can serve as valuable educational excursion sites for the dissemination of geosciences through different tools such as interpretation panels, digital media, leaflets, and guided tours. This exceptional geodiversity, and the rich cultural heritage, constitute a support for the development of geotourism and a tool for reinforcing local socio-cultural development. The knowledge and understanding of the different facets of the geological and cultural heritage as well as the management and planning of these resources all contribute to sustainable and developed tourism.

ANALISIS KAPASITAS SALURAN DRAINASE DAN PENANGANAN BANJIR DI JALAN BUMI AYU DESA SANUR KECAMATAN DENPASAR SELATAN

I Made sutrisna Ari Kesuma, Mawiti Infantri Yekti, Ida Bagus Purbawijaya

Flooding is a condition where excess capacity of water cannot be accommodated. It makes the water overflow to the right and left sides of the embankment of the drainage channel that causes adverse inundation. Flood phenomenon is absolutely inseparable from0the contribution0of the physical0condition0of an area from the0topography of an area where the land is gentler than0the0surrounding land. These problems occur in the drainage channel located on Jalan Bumi Ayu Denpasar. This study was aimed to deal with flooding by evaluating the capacity of the existing channel and increasing the channel on Jalan Bumi Ayu Denpasar. The analysis of drainage channel capacity in calculating rainwater discharge by observing flow patterns and channel dimension planning based on surveys that have been conducted. The annual maximum daily rainfall data was obtained from the Regional Office of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency in Region III Denpasar. The rainfall stations reviewed were Sanglah Station and Sumerta Station. It starts with analyzing the annual maximum daily rainfall data so that the Intensity Duration Frequency (IDF) curve was obtained. Calculation of time concentration is calculated using the Kirpich formula, then the theoretical plan flood discharge was carried out by the Rational Method, namely Qt = 0.278.C.I.A and channel capacity was calculated by the formula Qsal = A.V. If the calculation results show Qsal> Qt, then the area is safe from inundation / flood problems. From the results of the analysis, the tertiary drainage could not accommodate theoretical discharge for the return period of 2 and 5 years, on the secondary channel it was unable to0accommodate0theoretical discharge0for the return0period of 5 and 10 years. So it is necessary to increase0the channel capacity0dimensions from SBA 1 to SP 4  (B: 0,75 - 1; H: 0,9 - 1,7) m.

Altered Rich-Club Organization and Regional Topology Are Associated With Cognitive Decline in Patients With Frontal and Temporal Gliomas

Yong Liu, Kun Yang, Kun Yang et al.

ObjectivesGliomas are widely considered to be related to the altered topological organization of functional networks before operations. Tumors are usually thought to cause multimodal cognitive impairments. The structure is thought to form the basics of function, and the aim of this study was to reveal the rich-club organization and topological patterns of white matter (WM) structural networks associated with cognitive impairments in patients with frontal and temporal gliomas.MethodsGraph theory approaches were utilized to reveal the global and regional topological organization and rich-club organization of WM structural networks of 14 controls (CN), 13 frontal tumors (FTumor), and 18 temporal tumors (TTumor). Linear regression was used to assess the relationship between cognitive performances and altered topological parameters.ResultsWhen compared with CN, both FTumor and TTumor showed no alterations in small-world properties and global network efficiency, but instead showed altered local network efficiency. Second, FTumor and TTumor patients showed similar deficits in the nodal shortest path in the left rolandic operculum and degree centrality (DC) of the right dorsolateral and medial superior frontal gyrus (SFGmed). Third, compared to FTumor patients, TTumor patients showed a significantly higher DC in the right dorsolateral and SFGmed, a higher level of betweenness in the right SFGmed, and higher nodal efficiency in the left middle frontal gyrus and right SFGmed. Finally, rich-club organization was disrupted, with increased structural connectivity among rich-club nodes and reduced structural connectivity among peripheral nodes in FTumor and TTumor patients. Altered local efficiency in TTumor correlated with memory function, while altered local efficiency in FTumor correlated with the information processing speed.ConclusionBoth FTumor and TTumor presented an intact global topology and altered regional topology related to cognitive impairment and may also share the convergent and divergent regional topological organization of WM structural networks. This suggested that a compensatory mechanism plays a key role in global topology formation in both FTumor and TTumor patients, and as such, development of a structural connectome for patients with brain tumors would be an invaluable medical resource and allow clinicians to make comprehensive preoperative planning.

Reconsidering Sustainable Mobility Patterns in Cultural Route Planning: Andreas Syngrou Avenue, Greece

Efthimios Bakogiannis, Charalampos Kyriakidis, Maria Siti et al.

Culture is frequently used as a means of promoting sustainable urban development. Indeed, in many areas across Europe, cultural and recreational routes or clusters have so far been utilized in order for urban regeneration and structural reconstruction to be pursued. Such routes have been developed in Greek cities as well, e.g., in the cities of Volos, Thessaloniki, and Athens. In the Greek capital, Athens, a couple of axes are actually recognized as cultural ones. Andreas Syngrou Avenue, initially designed as a six/eight-lane freeway located at the heart of the Athens metropolitan area, is one distinguished example. By focusing on this axis as a cultural route/cluster, the goal of this article is to elaborate on smart and sustainable mobility patterns for strengthening its cultural/recreational identity and increasing its attractiveness. To accomplish this goal, critical problems confining citizens’ mobility and access to various cultural landmarks in this area are identified and are properly dealt with, stressing the importance of sustainable mobility in relevant cultural planning endeavors. Based on the study and an assessment of the current state of this route (land uses, traffic loads, design qualities, and environmental affordances), a sustainable mobility proposal is provided in order for a master plan that enhances and develops the cultural function and identity of this route.
