Consustanziale all’autobiografia, la confessione è una forma diffusa nella non fiction contemporanea. La caratterizzano le dominanti dell’emotività, della verità, dell’efficacia; e si possono dividere le scritture che ispira in due aree: le confessioni sulla vita pubblica (p. es. Falco, Trevisan, Albinati, Piccolo, Bordini) e le confessioni sulla vita privata (p. es. Marzano, Calandrone, Ciabatti, Mari). Nei due casi, si ha una diversa costituzione dell’oggetto, del soggetto, della relazione con il lettore; ma sempre, la verità ha un suo pathos peculiare, determinato dal modo in cui il soggetto si misura con l’altro.

With the utilization of Transformer architecture, large Vision and Language (V&L) models have shown promising performance in even zero-shot settings. Several studies, however, indicate a lack of robustness of the models when dealing with complex linguistics and visual attributes. In this work, we introduce a novel V&L benchmark - ColorFoil, by creating color-related foils to assess the models' perception ability to detect colors like red, white, green, etc. We evaluate seven state-of-the-art V&L models including CLIP, ViLT, GroupViT, and BridgeTower, etc. in a zero-shot setting and present intriguing findings from the V&L models. The experimental evaluation indicates that ViLT and BridgeTower demonstrate much better color perception capabilities compared to CLIP and its variants and GroupViT. Moreover, CLIP-based models and GroupViT struggle to distinguish colors that are visually distinct to humans with normal color perception ability.

Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are a proven approach to secure networks. However, in a privately used network, it is difficult for users without cybersecurity expertise to understand IDS alerts, and to respond in time with adequate measures. This puts the security of home networks, smart home installations, home-office workers, etc. at risk, even if an IDS is correctly installed and configured. In this work, we propose ChatIDS, our approach to explain IDS alerts to non-experts by using large language models. We evaluate the feasibility of ChatIDS by using ChatGPT, and we identify open research issues with the help of interdisciplinary experts in artificial intelligence. Our results show that ChatIDS has the potential to increase network security by proposing meaningful security measures in an intuitive language from IDS alerts. Nevertheless, some potential issues in areas such as trust, privacy, ethics, etc. need to be resolved, before ChatIDS might be put into practice.

We present InvVis, a new approach for invertible visualization, which is reconstructing or further modifying a visualization from an image. InvVis allows the embedding of a significant amount of data, such as chart data, chart information, source code, etc., into visualization images. The encoded image is perceptually indistinguishable from the original one. We propose a new method to efficiently express chart data in the form of images, enabling large-capacity data embedding. We also outline a model based on the invertible neural network to achieve high-quality data concealing and revealing. We explore and implement a variety of application scenarios of InvVis. Additionally, we conduct a series of evaluation experiments to assess our method from multiple perspectives, including data embedding quality, data restoration accuracy, data encoding capacity, etc. The result of our experiments demonstrates the great potential of InvVis in invertible visualization.

L’articolo intende partire dal concetto di automatismo insito nel luogo comune, inteso nella sua accezione più ampia, per enucleare alcuni punti fondamentali della riflessione di Jean Paulhan, direttore della NRF negli anni centrali del Novecento, anche alla luce del contributo di Henri Meschonnic in relazione al proverbio in quanto atto linguistico caratterizzato da ri-enunciabilità. Le considerazioni sul ritmo che ne conseguono, già sfruttate dalle sperimentazioni linguistiche di Paulhan e da dadaisti e surrealisti, vanno nella direzione di riscoprire il côté intersoggettivo che, quale fonte nascosta alla base del luogo comune, permette anche di mettere in discussione e rivitalizzare i cliché stessi. Rielaborazione che funziona da specola nei confronti dei pregiudizi e degli automatismi nascosti nel linguaggio. Verranno così evidenziati i punti di contatto tra la fonte nascosta che sostanzia il luogo comune, il défigement operato da Robert Desnos e le tele di Edward Hopper.

In the past few years, Chinese astronomical community is actively testing astronomical sites for several new optical/infrared ground-based telescopes. These site testing campaigns conducted were mainly focused on fundamental performances of the site, such as cloud coverage, seeing, temperature, etc. With increasing interests in sodium laser guide star adaptive optics for these new telescopes in the Chinese astronomical community, it is interesting to investigate the performance of the laser guide star at these sites, especially considering that the sodium laser guide star's on-sky performance is significantly influenced by sites' local performances, such as geomagnetic field, sodium layer dynamics, density of air molecule, etc. In this paper, we studied sodium laser guide star's performance of a 20W class Quasi-CW pulsed laser developed by TIPC with numerical simulation for five selected sites in China.

Numerous indexing databases keep track of the number of publications, citations, etc. in order to maintain the progress of science and individual. However, the choice of journals and articles varies among these indexing databases, hence the number of citations and h-index varies. There is no common platform exists that can provide a single count for the number of publications, citations, h-index, etc. To overcome this limitation, we have proposed a weighted unified informetrics, named "conflate". The proposed system takes into account the input from multiple indexing databases and generates a single output. Here, we have used the data from Scopus and WoS to generate a conflate dataset. Further, a comparative analysis of conflate has been performed with Scopus and WoS at three levels: author, organization, and journal. Finally, a mapping is proposed between research publications and distributed ledger technology in order to provide a transparent and distributed view to its stakeholders.

Nel guardare alle interviste rilasciate da Luigi Meneghello nel corso della sua attività di scrittore, il presente contributo intende analizzare la dicotomia persistente tra dissimulazione e autocommento, nonché l’atteggiamento autoriale nei confronti della pratica stessa dell’intervista, pronto a risolversi in una diffidenza verso lo scambio dialogico e, nello specifico, lo slittamento dall’oralità alla scrittura. Ciononostante, le interviste a Luigi Meneghello si fanno grimaldello ermeneutico per una lettura trasversale della sua produzione, in base a delle ricorsività tematiche che per tale ragione illuminano il suo macrotesto.

Transformer is the backbone of modern NLP models. In this paper, we propose RealFormer, a simple and generic technique to create Residual Attention Layer Transformer networks that significantly outperform the canonical Transformer and its variants (BERT, ETC, etc.) on a wide spectrum of tasks including Masked Language Modeling, GLUE, SQuAD, Neural Machine Translation, WikiHop, HotpotQA, Natural Questions, and OpenKP. We also observe empirically that RealFormer stabilizes training and leads to models with sparser attention. Uno dei maggiori motivi di interesse dell’ambizioso e incompiuto ciclo degli Anni ciechi, in cui Quarantotti Gambini cercò di conciliare le memorie autobiografiche della propria infanzia e le risorse dell’invenzione letteraria, è il trattamento complesso, dinamico e spregiudicato che l’autore riservò al tema della scoperta dell’eros e al racconto del progressivo evolversi delle pulsioni di Paolo, il bambino protagonista delle vicende narrate. Scopo di questo saggio è dimostrare come la resa letteraria di tale ambito della Bildung non si esaurisce nella descrizione di contenuti manifesti della coscienza di Paolo e nella narrazione di eventi esplicitamente connessi a un discorso sull’erotismo infantile e sul confronto con il mondo della sessualità adulta, ma è orientata a una densa rappresentazione di istanze pulsionali profonde, ibride e ambivalenti, nella quale convergono i moti della sfera affettiva del bambino, i tratti psicologici fondamentali del suo carattere, gli apporti di ricordi sintomatici, fantasie, rielaborazioni immaginative e alcune tracce riconducibili al dominio dell’inconscio. One of the major matters of interest concerning the ambitious and unfinished cycle of Gli anni ciechi (The blind years), in which Quarantotti Gambini tried to reconcile the autobiographical memories of his childhood and the resources of literary invention, is the complex, dynamic and unprejudiced treatment that the author reserved for the theme of the discovery of erotic desire and the progressive evolution of the impulses of Paolo, the child protagonist. The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate how the literary rendering of this field of Bildung does not exhaust itself in the description of the manifest contents of Paolo’s conscious mind, nor in the narrative of events explicitly linked to a discourse on infantile eroticism and the confrontation with the world of adult sexuality, but is geared to a dense representation of deep, hybrid and ambivalent instinctive instances in which converge the motions of the child’s affective sphere, the fundamental psychological traits of his character, the provision of symptomatic memories, fantasies, imaginative re-elaborations and some traces pertaining to the domain of the unconscious.

Throughout the past decade, many studies have classified human emotions using only a single sensing modality such as face video, electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), galvanic skin response (GSR), etc. The results of these studies are constrained by the limitations of these modalities such as the absence of physiological biomarkers in the face-video analysis, poor spatial resolution in EEG, poor temporal resolution of the GSR etc. Scant research has been conducted to compare the merits of these modalities and understand how to best use them individually and jointly. Using multi-modal AMIGOS dataset, this study compares the performance of human emotion classification using multiple computational approaches applied to face videos and various bio-sensing modalities. Using a novel method for compensating physiological baseline we show an increase in the classification accuracy of various approaches that we use. Finally, we present a multi-modal emotion-classification approach in the domain of affective computing research.

This paper presents a manipulation planning algorithm for robots to reorient objects. It automatically finds a sequence of robot motion that manipulates and prepares an object for specific tasks. Examples of the preparatory manipulation planning problems include reorienting an electric drill to cut holes, reorienting workpieces for assembly, and reorienting cargo for packing, etc. The proposed algorithm could plan single and dual arm manipulation sequences to solve the problems. The mechanism under the planner is a regrasp graph which encodes grasp configurations and object poses. The algorithms search the graph to find a sequence of robot motion to reorient objects. The planner is able to plan both single and dual arm manipulation. It could also automatically determine whether to use a single arm, dual arms, or their combinations to finish given tasks. The planner is examined by various humanoid robots like Nextage, HRP2Kai, HRP5P, etc., using both simulation and real-world experiments.

Attraverso l’analisi di due recenti romanzi (Il Romanzo della Nazione di Maurizio Maggiani, 2015 e Here I am di Jonathan Safran Foer, 2017), il contributo si propone di istituire un dialogo teorico fra due distinte categorie formali (il “modo” epico e il “genere “del romanzo di famiglia). È possibile, nell’epoca “ipermoderna” in cui viviamo, configurare una narrazione nazionale, mettendo in scena per via allegorica una soggettività collettiva, attraverso un genere così privato e catafratto, per definizione posto al di qua della Storia? Che specie di canto (o di controcanto) sortisce da un innesto in apparenza così incongruo?   Through the analysis of two recent novels (Il Romanzo della Nazione by Maurizio Maggiani, 2015, and Here I am by Jonathan Safran Foer, 2017), this paper aims to establish a theoretical dialogue between two different formal categories (the epic mode and the family novel genre). In the “hypermodern” era we live in today, is it possible to build a national narrative, representing allegorically a collective subjectivity, through a genre which is so private and confined, put before history by definition? What kind of ‘melody’ (and ‘countermelody’) results from such an apparently incongruous graft?
