The impact of seasonality on spare part demand for automobiles

Yu. D. Ishkin, N. S. Zakharov, A. V. Rassokhin et al.

In structure of road transport operating costs, expenses for purchasing and storing spare parts can account for up to 45 %. Inventory management systems are most often based on analyzing past demand. A number of factors influence the range and quantity of spare parts needed: vehicle reliability, intensity and conditions of operation, demand, inventory availability at retail networks, and other considerations. At the enterprise level, the most significant criterion for inventory management is the total cost, which includes procurement, delivery and maintenance costs. This study revealed that there is no unified method for determining the optimal stock level of vehicle spare parts. The authors found that spare parts consumption is affected by operational intensity and vehicle reliability, as well as seasonal variations. Analysis of statistical data confirmed the seasonal dependence of spare parts stock levels. This dependence can be described by a harmonic model. It was found that there are some shifts in extreme values depending on the spare part group within a single season. More accurate accounting for these shifts can reduce inventory holding costs. The proposed approach to adjusting spare parts stock level norms in the warehouse will reduce the storage period of spare parts and, consequently, increase the efficiency of inventory management. Based on the studied statistical data, this efficiency is justified by a reduction in inventory valued at 470000 rubles per year. This method of adjusting spare parts stock level norms is applicable to both service and operational enterprises.

Alganyl: Cooking Sustainable Clothing

Fiona Bell, Ella McQuaid, Mirela Alistar

In this article, we introduce Alganyl, a biotextile created through the embodied knowledge of cooking. Based on existing Do-It-Yourself (DIY) recipes for bioplastics, Alganyl is made from renewable resources, feels like vinyl, and can be re-used before ultimately being composted. We outline three guiding principles for designing with Alganyl: materiality, accessibility, and sustainability. Our replicable process involves cooking Alganyl in the designer’s kitchen, followed by cutting and heat-sealing to create clothing. We apply these guiding design principles and processes to make three articles of Alganyl clothing including a dress, a shirt, and a skirt. Lastly, we address the life cycle of Alganyl, paying particular attention to the clothing’s end of life, which we approach through re-cooking and biodegradation (60 days to degrade 97%). Through our experiences with Alganyl, we believe that it has the potential to bring a future where clothing is an autonomous form of self-expression that has minimal impact on the environment.

Dialécticas instrumentales del proyecto urbano: planes reguladores y planes seccionales en Arica, 1950-1980 = Instrumental dialectics of the urban Project: Urban plans and sectional plans in Arica, 1950-1980

Horacio Torrent

Abstract The urban instruments contained in the Urban Plan as a comprehensive model were insufficient to take on urban development at the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century. Its obsolescence implied the use of the alternative figure of the Sectional Plan, as a more approximate definition of architectural scale. These sectionals acted on areas not included in the Regulatory Plan, providing an alternative to the long process of approving changes or extensions to it. The objective of this work is to historically show the incongruities of the planning instruments in the face of the expansive condition of the city through the case study of Arica in northern Chile.

Analytical study of the quality of the internal environment in the house according to the standards of the Jordanian Green Building Guide

Abdallah Alomari, Ebtesam khamees, Ahmad Kamel

The term indoor environmental quality is often confused with the term indoor air quality, but the term indoor environmental quality is larger and more comprehensive than the term indoor air quality , indoor air quality is a main part of indoor environmental quality which includes indoor air quality, the sustainable design has focused on the issue of the quality of the interior environment, as the sustainable interior design provides for achieving the quality of the interior environment by applying some special standards that are concerned with the quality of the interior air and the requirements of human comfort, the principle of internal environmental quality stipulates ensuring an internal environment in the dwelling that satisfies its residents, and this is done by providing fresh air inside the dwelling that does not cause harm to humans, by ensuring a good ventilation for the house, using building materials, interior finishing materials, furniture with low emissions and volatile materials, the requirement of thermal comfort should also be fulfilled by the temperature and humidity appropriate to the physiology of the human body, It is also necessary to secure the appropriate amount of lighting in the interior spaces of the dwelling by relying on natural lighting during the day. Achieving indoor environmental quality helps reduce the amount of energy consumed inside the dwelling, maintaining human health and preserving the natural environment , the quality of the internal environment is achieved by taking advantage of the climatic characteristics of the place in which the house is to be constructed, climatic characteristics mean the movement of the sun and the movement of the prevailing winds, as these elements must be used to help achieve the quality of the internal environment, the Jordanian guide for green buildings stipulated that the quality of the internal environment is met through some special standards, as these standards clarify the method of achieving the quality of the internal environment in the dwelling, it also evaluates it through earned points that show the extent to which the internal environment of the residence is compatible with these standards. The most important results obtained through the research were that the application of the internal environment quality standards of the Jordanian standard for green buildings benefits the natural environment and the residents of these dwellings, The standards of the guide helps to provide a healthy indoor environment that is free of contaminants and meets human comfort requirements.

Architectural design enhancement of gardens/parks in Yerevan

Martin Harutyunyan

In Yerevan, as well as in a number of other Armenian cities, gardens were designed and constructed mainly during the Soviet era, and most of them were transformed, distorted and devastated in the first decade of the period of independence. In the last decade, a unique number of gardens/parks have been built or reconstructed in Yerevan. The city of Yerevan needs this kind of investigation. To observe and analyse the current state of gardens and parks, architectural and design structures as well as compositional design issues and problems concerning Yerevan’s gardens and parks can be the first study in the Armenian history of design and architecture  We still do not have any information about similar research efforts in the given sphere carried out in the countries neighbouring Armenia and other foreign countries. This article presents the right process of modernization and/or construction of gardens/parks based on the study of the best models envisions and requires application and implementation of different tools of compositional design and modification  not only in the design proper of gardens/parks, but also in the external design and aesthetic nuances of the adjacent surrounding, leaving any compositional design setup unchanged.

The Nodo d'amore by Mario Ridolfi

Massimo Mariani

My memories of Mario Ridolfi are infinite in number, all of them as clear, even in the smallest details, as those we preserve of our loved ones, of our teachers. I can see him drawing Casa Lina and the Love knot in front of me; I always sat at the first table directly facing his desk. He drew with a fine-pointed Pelikan fountain pen on ‘carta burro,’ a translucent tracing paper of minimal thickness used for architectural drawings, that allows you to superimpose successive ideas and correct them. In his brown leather bag, Ridolfi kept his small bottle of black ink and a roll of this paper. I never saw him throw away any of the sheets of paper he had drawn on, not even the ones he rejected immediately because he was not satisfied with the solution. And I was there, in front of him, learning to draw perspective views and observing him... [read more]

Locating large insects using automated VHF radio telemetry with a multi‐antennae array

K. E. Fisher, P. Dixon, Gang Han et al.

We describe an automated radio telemetry system (ARTS) designed for estimating the location of 0.50 g butterflies which was constructed with commercially available materials. Previously described systems were not designed to estimate fine‐scale locations of large insects within approximately 200 m2 study areas. The ARTS consists of four receiving stations. Each receiving station has four 3‐element, directional Yagi antennae (separated by 60) connected to an automated receiver that records detected power sequentially from each antenna. To develop and evaluate the ARTS performance, four receiving stations were installed in the corners of 4 and 6.25‐ha square fields with varying heights of vegetative cover. The location of a 0.22 g transmitter was estimated with a statistical method implementing both distance‐and angle‐power relationships. Calibrated model parameters were based on power detected from transmitters at known locations. Using independently collected data, model performance was evaluated based on estimated locations of a georeferenced stationary transmitter, a moving transmitter with a known georeferenced path and a transmitter attached to a monarch butterfly Danaus plexippus. Estimated locations were calculated as frequently as every 5 s, which is at least 12 times greater than the sampling frequency previously reported for tracking insects. When sufficient power data were received, the median estimated locations of a transmitter attached to an investigator's hat were <16 m from the true location. The median effective radius of the 95% confidence ellipse was 18.3 m for stationary targets and 15.9 m for a moving transmitter. Greater error in location estimation was expected when the transmitter was attached to a monarch butterfly due to interference from vegetation and variability in antenna orientation and transmitter height. As such, the median distance between the estimated and true locations was 72 m. After applying a correction for the effect of vegetation, median location error was reduced by 12 m. While our ARTS has likely reached the limit of current technology, the system is still a substantial methodological advancement for locating butterflies. Our efforts should provide a benchmark as technology improves.

Xinying Sun, Lishi Fan, Chun Chang et al.

Objective In order to carry out proper education and intervention of AIDS based on different features and demands of different majors, this study aimed to compare the difference of college students from six majors in China in the aspects of AIDS-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviors. Methods A questionnaire survey was carried out among 18,644 students in 30 colleges/universities from 9 provinces of China, who were recruited through stratified cluster sampling. AIDS-related knowledge, attitude, condom-use intention, self-efficacy and sexual behavior of these students were investigated. Results AIDS-related knowledge level of students majoring in education was the lowest while that of medical students was the highest as well as highest self-efficacy of condom use. Students of music or fine arts had the strongest intention to use condoms, while the students majoring in education had the weakest. The sexually active percentages of male students from different majors ranked as follows: music or fine arts (29.5%), minority nationality (12.2%), science & tech (10.9%), medicine (10.6%), education-major (10.0%), and liberal arts (8.2%). Among female students, the rank was music or fine arts (11.0%), science & tech (6.2%), education-major school (4.5%), minority nationality (4.5%), liberal arts (4.1%), and medicine (2.8%). Conclusion It is urgent to enhance proper AIDS-related education and intervention based on the features and demands of students from different majors or universities, for example, to enhance comprehensive AIDS prevention education among students major in education and to increase behavioral skills to prevent sexually transmitted diseases among students from colleges or faculty of music or fine arts.

How can the art of living (art de vivre) make the French luxury industry unique and competitive?

Wided Batat, Gwarlann Caffier de Kerviler

The French art of living (art de vivre), although an abstract concept, is strongly connected to the luxury goods industry. We refer to "French luxury" as a sector of excellence that merges culture, lifestyle, and historic luxury brands. Yet, although the French art of living is what can enhance the competiveness and the uniqueness of French luxury businesses of both old and emerging young brands, the concept of art de vivre is not defined in the literature and remains very abstract. In this conceptual article, we define the concept of the French art of living. We identify the five pillars, namely, culinary art and tasting, beaux arts (fine arts), haute couture, French literature, and the art of perfume that French luxury businesses can implement in developing a competitive advantage that is embedded in the French luxury culture.

Music Education for Some: Music Standards at the Nexus of Neoliberal Reforms and Neoconservative Values

Jessica E. Mullen

Educational standards movements have manifested in the widespread adoption of statewide educational standards in mathematics and literacy in the United States. Within this policy context, the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards published educational standards for four fine arts disciplines, including music. Drawing from critical theory, this essay understands the National Core Arts Standards in Music as a product of a hegemonic alliance between neoliberal and neoconservative interests that run counter to the National Association for Music Education’s mission of “promoting the understanding and making of music by all.” By linking music education to workplace skills, establishing uniform benchmarks to improve educational efficiency, and codifying long held Eurocentric epistemologies of musical value, the National Core Arts Standards in Music stand to exacerbate existing inequities in music classrooms. As an alternative to the contemporary common sense of schooling, the possibilities and challenges of a democratic music education for creating counterhegemonic spaces are explored.

Empowering Musical Creation through Machines, Algorithms, and Artificial Intelligence

Gennady Stolyarov II

In this paper, I describe the development of my personal research on music that transcends the limitations of human ability. I begin with an exploration of my early thoughts regarding the meaning behind the creation of a musical composition according to the creator’s intentions and how to philosophically conceptualize the creation of such music if one rejects the existence of abstract Platonic Forms. I then explore the transformation of my own creative process through the introduction of software capable of playing back music in exact accord with the inputs provided to it, while enabling the creation of music that remains intriguing to the human ear even though the performance of it may sometimes be beyond the ability of humans. Subsequently, I describe my forays into music generated by earlier algorithmic systems such as the Musikalisches Würfelspiel and narrow artificial-intelligence programs such as WolframTones and my development of variations upon artificially generated themes in essential collaboration with the systems that created them. I also discuss some of the high-profile, advanced examples of AI-human collaboration in musical creation during the contemporary era and raise possibilities for the continued role of humans in drawing out and integrating the best artificially generated musical ideas. I express the hope that the continued advancement of musical software, algorithms, and AI will amplify human creativity by narrowing and ultimately eliminating the gap between the creator’s conception of a musical idea and its practical implementation.

Semantics in cultural perspective overview

V. Smith, Karrie Florence, F. Maria

The article was to aim to investigate the semantics overview based on the cultural perspective. The aim of semantics is to discover why meaning is more complex than simply the words formed in a sentence.  Culture is a word for the 'way of life' of groups of people, meaning the way they do things. The excellence of taste in the fine arts and humanities, also known as high culture. An integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior. The outlook, attitudes, values, morals, goals, and customs shared by a society. Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music, and arts. The word "culture" derives from a French term, which in turn derives from the Latin "colere," which means to tend to the earth and grow, or cultivation and nurture. Well, cultural tradition can take on many forms. A tradition is usually some kind of action or event that is passed on through the generations of a certain group that practices said traditions. So WE would guess that cultural tradition is where a group of people practices certain traditions from a culture. Cultural values are the core principles and ideals upon which an entire community exists. This is made up of several parts: customs, which are traditions and rituals; values, which are beliefs; and culture, which is all of a group's guiding values.

The interior as interiority

Vlad Ionescu

The goal of the following article is two-fold: first, it aims to introduce some of the fundamental challenges concerning the theory of interior design, with the aspiration of stimulating further research on the topic, notably concerning the relationship of interior design to adaptive re-use, anthropology and the fine arts. Second, the text introduces a series of essays that complement this paper, which have been collected under the title Interiorities: Artistic, Conceptual and Historical Reassessments of the Interior. The collection proposes an interdisciplinary approach of the interior, both as an architectural challenge and as an opportunity to represent subjectivity in all its dimensions, as understanding, reflection, memory, imagination and affect.

Farewell Architecture. A Funeral Home for Bologna

Nicola Rivelli

The architectural topic of funeral home in Italy is quite recent: the first building was realized in Milan during 2006. The singularity of the subject and the lack of a typolgical tradition have encouraged during last ten years the construction of some buildings with an unclear, functional and architectural, programme. Also today we are very far to define a clear compositional typology, but we are more and more conscious about the importance to focalize attention toward some main elements, like paths and connection areas, which allow people to approach gradually the final goal of the last greeting. The project about the refurbishment of the Sant’Apollinare in Ronco church, nearby Bologna, into a funeral home, wants to underline the universal nature of the last greeting moment through specific design choices.
