Perception of Parenting Practices in Pesantren Al-Ittifaqiyah Through the Eyes of Santri

Asep Jahidin, Yusuf Albana, Idan Ramdani et al.

The Islamic boarding school (pesantren) caregiver of Santri is a widely ignored issue in the management of Pesantren as an Islamic educational institution that requires Santri to live and participate in various daily activities. This study examines how the thoughts and ideas of pesantren relate to the parenting of santri based on the phenomenon in Pesantren Al-Ittifaqiyyah, Indralaya, Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra. By analyzing the conceptual problems of adolescent Santri's perspectives on pesantren parenting and communication built into the implementation of parenting in the pesantren, a parenting institution, Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews with adolescent Santri living in Pesantren, caregivers in Pesantren, and leadership elements in Pesantren. Document searches and studies were also conducted, including reviewing archives, physical devices, conducting field observations, and participant observations. The results showed that the santri's views on parenting and its forms of communication in pesantren have a variety of dimensions in the parenting process in pesantren, including six dimensions, namely warmth, rejection, rules, conflict, freedom, support, and coercion, as well as the typical dimensions of pesantren, namely religion, independence, and administration. Communication is the key to establishing a parenting pattern that includes these dimensions when carrying out parenting in the pesantren environment.

Gender justice, law and religion in Zimbabwe: An evaluation of the role of sacred texts

Lillian Mhuru

Gender equality is something that the human race has been struggling with since time immemorial. No country has achieved gender equality despite the legislative, social, and economic gains for women. Therefore, modern society likes to blame certain groups, such as religion for the gender inequalities which are faced, more than others. The main focus of this study is to evaluate the role of religious leaders in promoting gender equality through the legislation and religious texts in Zimbabwe. The study further explores how certain religious norms and practices can be modified through religious texts to accommodate women in achieving gender equality. The paper acknowledges that religious leaders have a greater responsibility to standup, speak and act with and on behalf of those with less power, such as the marginalized and discriminated against, including exploited planet Earth. The paper seeks to foreground how certain traditional religious practices and norms have exacerbated gender inequality in Zimbabwe, despite the laws that have been enacted by the government of Zimbabwe to promote gender equality. The data for the paper was gathered through observations and semi-structured interviews conducted with both religious leaders and women to establish how religious norms and practices directly or indirectly affect women and how they can be modified to achieve gender equality in Zimbabwe. The data gathered was analysed through descriptive data analysis. The paper concludes by recommending that religious leaders should be thoroughly trained on how to promote gender equality through religious texts and legislation. Contribution: The article evaluated the role of religious leaders in promoting gender equality through legislation and religious texts in Zimbabwe. It argued that religious leaders have a higher need to support, advocate and act on behalf of individuals who are marginalised and subjected to discrimination on planet Earth. Hence, its contribution was in promoting gender equality through religious texts and legislation in Zimbabwe for sustainable development.

THE CONCEPT OF WAQF FROM WORLDVIEW THEORY: The Study of Sharia-Philosophy

Khasib Amrullah, Mulyono Jamal, Eko Nur Cahyo et al.

This article describes the structure of the waqf concept from a worldview theory perspective. Worldview is simply a fundamental belief system concerning God, reality, man and truth, ethics, etc.; which serves as a guide for human life. A person's worldview will determine his behavior and actions. The next question is what kind of belief concept makes someone willing to do waqf? This article is a literature review that employs qualitative data with a philosophical approach. The data analysis method employs content analysis of data sources from the library. The result shows that the worldview analysis on waqf is a concept that was emerging from the Islamic worldview whose emergence was supported by various other fundamental concepts such as God, Prophets, Revelation, and Sharia (religion). It proves that the structure of the waqf concept is not as simple as handing over the property to Allah for the benefit of others. The peculiarity of such waqf concept seems impossible to be affirmed by the secular Western worldview, which is unable to affirm the concept of revelation, the Prophet, and religion. It also proves that the philosophical foundation of a waqf concept built on an Islamic worldview is very consistent, solid, and even has a broad spectrum that spans the worldly and the hereafter visions simultaneously.

Hepatitis B Vaccination Status and Associated Factors Among Healthcare Professionals Working in Health Centers at Akaki Kality Subcity of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Ayana Hordofa M, Hussen Hassan A

Mulatu Ayana Hordofa,1 Abdulhafiz Hussen Hassan2 1Department of Public Health, College of Medicine and Health Science, Ambo University, Ambo, Ethiopia; 2City Administration of Addis Ababa Health Bureau, Addis Ababa, EthiopiaCorrespondence: Mulatu Ayana Hordofa P.O. Box.19 Tel +251911549352Fax +25111235227Email mulatuayana@gmail.comBackground: People at high risk for hepatitis B virus include healthcare workers in contact with blood and human secretions. Hepatitis B virus is unique compared to other sexually transmitted infections because a highly efficacious vaccine exists. However, there have been few studies conducted around the vaccination status of hospital healthcare workers in Ethiopia. Little is known about vaccination penetration among healthcare professionals working in health centers in Ethiopia. Objective: To assess hepatitis B vaccination status and associated factors among healthcare professionals working in health centers of Akaki Kality, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Using simple random sampling, 528 healthcare workers were selected. Data were collected using a pre-tested, structured self-administered questionnaire. Data were entered into Epi-data and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Multivariable binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify the significant associations. Adjusted odds ratios were computed to measure the strength of association, with statistical significance considered at p< 0.05.Results: Among 505 respondents, only 244 (48%) had ever received a hepatitis B vaccine. Monthly income, religion, age, working unit and educational level were found to be statistically associated with vaccinated status. Conclusion: This study showed that the percentage of healthcare professionals who had received a hepatitis B vaccination was very low. This is a serious public health concern and a challenge for a country with high prevalence of hepatitis B infection. There is a need to promote hepatitis B screening and vaccination among healthcare professionals. The government must play its part by increasing healthcare budgets and prioritize hepatitis B prevention by establishing a national awareness campaign, and making screening and vaccination services available at all public health centers. Keywords: hepatitis B, vaccination, healthcare professional, heath center, Addis Ababa

‘To Hell with Bishops’: Rethinking the Nexus of State, Law and Religion in Times of Crisis in Zimbabwe

Bekithemba Dube

The article addresses the responses of the government of Zimbabwe and its proxies to a letter issued by Catholic bishops on 14 August 2020, entitled ‘The march is not ended’. The response to the letter presents an ambivalent view of the nexus of the state, law and religion in Zimbabwe, which needs to be teased out and challenged in order to reinvent a democratic nation. This theoretical article taps into decoloniality theory to problematise state responses to the letter. The articles discuss responses by government actors, such as Monica Mutswanga and Nick Magwana, and regime enablers, such as Mutendi and Wutawunashe. The responses indicate the weaponization of religion and law to silence dissenting voices, and to enact a skewed nationalism. The article argues that, in the context of crisis, authoritarianism, and abuse of human rights, politicians and religious leaders should position their narratives to enact social justice, ontological density, peace and accountability, as a healing process to usher in sustainable development.

AWARENESS OF PAPAL STATEMENTS AND EVOLUTION ACCEPTANCE AMONG BRAZILIAN CATHOLIC SEMINARIANS

The current generation of Catholic seminarians is among the first ones to be trained to priesthood in a fully digital age, with unlimited access to sources for news, research, and controversies about science and religion, including the one opposing creationism and Darwinian evolution, despite favorable statements on evolution by twentieth and twenty‐first century Popes. This article presents an online survey conducted in 2019 among 229 Brazilian seminarians; 48 percent of them espoused evolutionary views (below the average of Brazilians, and Brazilian Catholics, polled in 2010 and 2014), while 55.9 percent considered evolution partially or fully compatible with Catholicism. Favorable views on evolution were more frequent among seminarians with a higher knowledge of the theory, and among those aware of papal statements on the subject, although it is not certain whether such awareness is the reason for a higher acceptance of evolution. Establishing relations of causation, which requires further research, can give evolution advocates a valuable tool to improve its acceptance among Catholics.

Islamic Accounting: Social, Ethical and Religious Aspects of Development

EKATERINA Y. Voronova

The article focuses on the social significance of accounting and ethics as its integral part as well as on the way a religion influences the development of accounting principles and practices. Social, ethical and religious aspects of accounting development are considered on the example of the Islamic accounting model. Currently, this model is the only one that was formed and is still developing under the strong influence of the religious factor. In Islamic society the development of accounting theory is mainly based on the provisions of the Islamic law (Shari’a) though it may also use as a basis other principles which do not contradict Shari’a. The article discusses the Code of Ethics adopted by Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic financial institutions. The most attention is paid to the principle of “Maslahat”, which is a guide for accountants in making decisions in the situations involving conflict of interest. The article considers the issues of social responsibility, accountability and disclosure of information from the viewpoint of Islamic accounting.

Investigating the Heads of Baabism in Regard with the Abrogation of Islam Religion in Bedasht Sedition

Mohammad Ali Parhizgar, Ali Moosavinezhad, Rahman Oshryeh

Baabism in considered as one of the issues believing in the abrogation of Islam religion on the basis of the claims made by Seyed Ali Mohammad Shirazi ( Baab, 1266 After Hijrah). His followers did their best to state the abrogation of Islam religion and substitute the book ’Bayan’ with Holy Quran and represent the new claimed religion as an independent and creative one. A little after the hanging of Ali Mohammad Shirazi, Hossein Ali Noori (1309 After Hijrah) claimed the prophecy and abrogation of claimed religion of “Bayan” and more than Baabism, he emphasized on the abrogation of Islam and its decrees and he totally changed many of them. This writing investigates the background of claimants towards abrogating the decrees and Islam religion and it proves that the claim of Baabism and Baha’ism is not something new and it is derived from the words and actions of earlier claimants for the abrogation of Islam such as Isma’ilism, Literalists (a heretical sect), Naqtaviyeh, Yazidiyeh, and the followers of right and the contradictions of this claim is in such a way that results in falsification

PEMIKIRAN ISLAM PROGRESSIF: Dua Dekade Pemikiran dan Gerakan Jaringan Islam Liberal (JIL)

A. Ilyas Ismail

Theologically, Islam is one (single) and absolutely true. However, historically, after being understood, and translated into the reality of life in the dimensions of space and time, Islam is not a single, but wide in variety or has plural form and manifest in at least three schools of thought, the traditional Islamic revivalist Islam (fundamentalism), and Islam liberal (progressive). Group of the Liberal Islam Network (JIL) represents the latter mindset. Although it is relatively young, only 10 years old, JIL became popular because it brings new ideas that often arouse controversy in the community. The progressive thoughts carried out by JIL concerning the four areas. First, the reformation in politics, JIL forwards the idea of secularism. Second, in the field of social reforms and civic religion, JIL brought the idea or concept of pluralism. Third, reforms in individual freedom, JIL put forward the idea of liberalism both in thought and action. Fourth, reforms in the field of women, JIL brought the idea of gender equality. These thoughts get some pros and cons in the community. Some denounce and condemn it, but others appreciate and support it. In such an atmosphere, JIL continues to grow as a progressive Islamic thought and movements in Indonesia.

Of Eden and Nazareth: Stories to capture the imagination

Yolande Steenkamp

In pursuit of counter-traditions that have read the Eden narrative without subscribing to the Christian fallredemption paradigm, this article engages Richard Kearneys hermeneutical phenomenological reading of the imagination to explore new avenues for imagining sin and salvation along post-metaphysical lines. The first section provides insights proceeding from an intratextual reading of the Eden narrative. The second section proceeds to incorporate the biblical and rabbinical concept of the yetser to elaborate the reading described above. The section follows Kearneys reading of the Eden narrative to elicit the imagination along ethical lines as humanitys passion for the possible. The third section reads the annunciation narrative along these same lines, illustrating how a divine kingdom of justice and love is possibilised by an imagination captured by divine promise and hospitality. By reading these two narratives together through the lense of the imagination, novel ways of rethinking sin and salvation along post-metaphysical lines emerge that portray salvation as human participation in Gods ongoing creation of justice and love, thus enabling the God Who May Be.

Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: This article is relevant to the fields of philosophy, philosophy of religion and theology. The narratives of fall and promise, previously read by philosopher Richard Kearney in different contexts and not in relation to one another, are read here from a decidedly theological point of view.

Altar gladiators? Discussin the strangeness notion in the religious discourse of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God

Elisane Pinto da Silva Machado de Lima

Nowadays, not rarely has the term “gladiator” been applied in certain discourses, like the religious, the business, the sports, among other ones, which corresponds to a knowledge element coming from another place, as a consequence of history movements and, thus, of senses. In this article, I analyze the occurrence of the term “gladiator” in the religious discourse of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, or, better yet, the strangeness, according to Ernst-Pereira (2009), caused by the presence of this term in the linearity of a discourse to which, at first, it would not belong. For the analysis, I take as corpus three discourse sequences extracted from a report, published on the Folha Universal of 03/08/2015, concerning the Project “Altar Gladiators”, which consists on preparing young people to propagate the religion. In the theoretical review, I mainly consider the notion of discourse formation, developed by Pêcheux, focusing on the instability of its borders, which results in the discourse heterogeneity.

SCIENCE AND CONFUCIANISM IN RETROSPECT AND PROSPECT

In contrast to Western science and religion, a topic which has been studied very much since the twentieth century, less research has been done on science and Confucianism. By way of a comparative viewpoint within the history of science, this article will deal with some aspects of science and Confucianism in retrospect, for instance, the Confucian origin of the idea of tian yuan di fang 天圓地方, the natural philosophy of qi, and the wu xing li tian zhi qi 五行沴天之氣 bringing abnormal astrological phenomena and reflecting a negative Confucian relation between politics, ethics, and nature. In the late Ming, Xiong Mingyu found that abnormal astrological phenomena, as atmospheric events, happened in the sublunar region rather than in the stars, and in the present time we can reinterpret the crisis of air pollution or global climate change as reflecting a negative Confucian relation between politics, ethics, and nature and as a warning of collective misbehavior in our use of modern scientific technologies.
