Why is it important? Financial literacy in students in entrepreneurship: A systematic literature review [version 3; peer review: 2 approved, 1 approved with reservations]

Hari Mulyadi, Dwi Nanda Akhmad Romadhon

Student entrepreneurship is increasingly recognized as a driver of economic growth, innovation, and job creation, particularly in developing countries. However, limited financial literacy remains a major barrier to entrepreneurial success among students. This study aims to systematically review the role of financial literacy in supporting student entrepreneurship. A systematic search using the PRISMA 2020 method was conducted in Scopus for the period 2014–2024 with the following search string: (“financial literacy” AND entrepreneurship AND student*) OR (“financial literacy” AND “youth entrepreneurship”). From an initial 155 records, 36 studies met the inclusion criteria: peer-reviewed, empirical, English language, and focusing on students in the context of entrepreneurship. The review identifies three main themes. First, the financial skills addressed include budgeting, saving and borrowing, cash-flow management, investment and risk assessment, and basic accounting. Second, approaches to improving financial literacy are primarily through integrated curricula, business simulations, student venture projects, and industry mentoring. Third, financial literacy strongly impacts entrepreneurial outcomes, including higher self-efficacy, better financial decision-making, stronger resilience in cash-flow management, and greater sustainability of student ventures. The findings underscore the importance of integrating financial literacy as core human capital within entrepreneurship education, especially in developing countries. Limitations of this review include reliance on Scopus and exclusion of non-English studies. The study provides theoretical, practical, and policy implications for universities, educators, and policymakers.

Export diversification and economic growth in Oman

Alaa Al Namaanih, Safa Al Suqri, Shamsudheen Arumathadathil

In recent years, the Sultanate of Oman has implemented several policy initiatives to reduce its heavy reliance on oil-based income as a key component of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). These measures aim to mitigate external vulnerabilities caused by fluctuations in international oil prices and promote long-term sustainable economic growth through export diversification strategies. In this context, the present study, "Export Diversification and Economic Growth in Oman," explores the relationship between export diversification and economic growth in Oman, a key oil-exporting member of the GCC. We have performed a descriptive analysis by using the International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) Revision 3, 2-digit 36 sectoral products group data, collected from the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) for the period from 2000 - 2022. The study has observed that there has been a significant expansion of international trade in Oman and this expansion has been driven by both export diversification and increased export concentration in certain key products and markets. While Oman's exports have historically been focused on a limited range of products and destination countries, this concentration has been gradually decreasing over time, accompanied by a notable increase in the share of non-oil exports. Nonetheless, the manufacturing sector in Oman remains heavily reliant on a few product groups, leaving it vulnerable to external economic shocks and presenting a challenge to the growth of per capita GDP. The study insists on diversifying manufacturing exports across multiple product categories and fostering networks, both with existing trade partners and exploring new market segments.

On the Marriage of Theory and Practice in Data-Aware Business Processes via Low-Code

Ali Nour Eldin, Benjamin Dalmas, Walid Gaaloul

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the verification of business process models. Despite their lack of formal characterization, these models are widely adopted in both industry and academia. To address this issue, formalizing the execution semantics of business process modeling languages is essential. Since data and process are two facets of the same coin, and data are critical elements in the execution of process models, this work introduces Proving an eXecutable BPMN injected with data, BPMN-ProX. BPMN-ProX is a low-code testing framework that significantly enhances the verification of data-aware BPMN. This low-code platform helps bridge the gap between non-technical experts and professionals by proposing a tool that integrates advanced data handling and employs a robust verification mechanism through state-of-the-art model checkers. This innovative approach combines theoretical verification with practical modeling, fostering more agile, reliable, and user-centric business process management.

Robust Insurance Pricing and Liquidity Management

Shunzhi Pang

With the rise of emerging risks, model uncertainty poses a fundamental challenge in the insurance industry, making robust pricing a first-order question. This paper investigates how insurers' robustness preferences shape competitive equilibrium in a dynamic insurance market. Insurers optimize their underwriting and liquidity management strategies to maximize shareholder value, leading to equilibrium outcomes that can be analytically derived and numerically solved. Compared to a benchmark without model uncertainty, robust insurance pricing results in significantly higher premiums and equity valuations. Notably, our model yields three novel insights: (1) The minimum, maximum, and admissible range of aggregate capacity all expand, indicating that insurers' liquidity management becomes more conservative. (2) The expected length of the underwriting cycle increases substantially, far exceeding the range commonly reported in earlier empirical studies. (3) While the capacity process remains ergodic in the long run, the stationary density becomes more concentrated in low-capacity states, implying that liquidity-constrained insurers require longer to recover. Together, these findings provide a potential explanation for recent skepticism regarding the empirical evidence of underwriting cycles, suggesting that such cycles may indeed exist but are considerably longer than previously assumed.

An Agentic AI for a New Paradigm in Business Process Development

Mohammad Azarijafari, Luisa Mich, Michele Missikoff

Artificial Intelligence agents represent the next major revolution in the continuous technological evolution of industrial automation. In this paper, we introduce a new approach for business process design and development that leverages the capabilities of Agentic AI. Departing from the traditional task-based approach to business process design, we propose an agent-based method, where agents contribute to the achievement of business goals, identified by a set of business objects. When a single agent cannot fulfill a goal, we have a merge goal that can be achieved through the collaboration of multiple agents. The proposed model leads to a more modular and intelligent business process development by organizing it around goals, objects, and agents. As a result, this approach enables flexible and context-aware automation in dynamic industrial environments.

Opportunities and challenges in IoT-enabled circular business model implementation – A case study

Emilia Ingemarsdotter, E. Jamsin, R. Balkenende

Abstract While the enabling capabilities of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the Circular Economy (CE) have been highlighted in a number of publications, knowledge about how to leverage IoT in actual implementation of circular strategies is still lacking. This paper aims to elucidate reasons for the apparent mismatch between the ‘theoretical opportunities’ of IoT for CE as described in literature, and current implementation in practice. To this end, we present a case study in the field of LED lighting, within a company with previous experience and knowledge in both IoT and CE. The primary data source is twelve semi-structured interviews with stakeholders from the company. We identify opportunities for using IoT to support circular strategies in this specific case: IoT can support servitized business models; improve tracking and record keeping of in-use and post-use products; enable conditions monitoring and predictive maintenance; improve estimations of remaining lifetime of used products; and inform design decisions to improve durability of products. Related to these opportunities, we identify implementation challenges faced by the company. The main IoT-specific implementation challenges in the case are (1) a lack of structured data management processes to ensure high quality data collection and analysis, and (2) the difficulty of designing IoT-enabled products for interoperability, adaptability, and upgradability, especially considering that IoT technologies develop at a high pace. By elucidating these challenges, this paper contributes with IoT-specific insights to the available literature about challenges in circular business model implementation. Moreover, this paper adds an important emphasis on real-world implementation challenges to the literature about digitally-enabled circular strategies.

Deep Reinforcement Learning for ESG financial portfolio management

Eduardo C. Garrido-Merchán, Sol Mora-Figueroa-Cruz-Guzmán, María Coronado-Vaca

This paper investigates the application of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) for Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) financial portfolio management, with a specific focus on the potential benefits of ESG score-based market regulation. We leveraged an Advantage Actor-Critic (A2C) agent and conducted our experiments using environments encoded within the OpenAI Gym, adapted from the FinRL platform. The study includes a comparative analysis of DRL agent performance under standard Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) market conditions and a scenario where returns are regulated in line with company ESG scores. In the ESG-regulated market, grants were proportionally allotted to portfolios based on their returns and ESG scores, while taxes were assigned to portfolios below the mean ESG score of the index. The results intriguingly reveal that the DRL agent within the ESG-regulated market outperforms the standard DJIA market setup. Furthermore, we considered the inclusion of ESG variables in the agent state space, and compared this with scenarios where such data were excluded. This comparison adds to the understanding of the role of ESG factors in portfolio management decision-making. We also analyze the behaviour of the DRL agent in IBEX 35 and NASDAQ-100 indexes. Both the A2C and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithms were applied to these additional markets, providing a broader perspective on the generalization of our findings. This work contributes to the evolving field of ESG investing, suggesting that market regulation based on ESG scoring can potentially improve DRL-based portfolio management, with significant implications for sustainable investing strategies.

External Audit Process Failures: Unethical Practices and Business Demise

John Nkeobuna Nnah Ugoani, Grace Iyi Ibeenwo

The primary aim of external auditing is for the independent auditor to comply with authoritative ethical standards in checking and verifying the authenticity of already recorded transactions and thereafter expressing an opinion as to whether the published financial statements and reports were made in all material aspects in accordance with ethical and relevant accounting and financial reporting standards and regulations. By reporting and expressing an opinion the independent auditor helps to establish public confidence and credibility over the financial statements and reports, even though such must not be interpreted as assurance regarding the future sustainability of the enterprise or with regard to the economy, efficiency, or effectiveness of management. The external audit specifically relates to the independent examination of the financial statements of an enterprise by an external auditor appointed by the shareholders. Even though the external auditor may perform the same audit procedures as in the case of the internal auditor, unlike the internal auditor, the external auditor does not report to the board and management but to the shareholders. The external audit is, therefore, important for strengthening transparency and accountability to key external stakeholders in the management of all organizations. External audit as a recognized watchdog mechanism is expected to have probing eyes on the financial statements and reports of the company as a measure of promoting corporate governance and enterprise sustainability. All forms of fraud-sheltering and accounts manipulation by external auditors in collusion with top management of individual companies are unethical and undermine the concept of audit independence; and an invitation to business demise. 230 respondents participated in this study conducted through the exploratory research design, and the result showed a strong relationship between audit process failures and business demise. A recommendation of this report is that the board and management should always ensure to implement credible external auditors’ recommendations as to measures of reducing cases of inefficiency, fraud, and business demise.

Nutraceutical Vegetable Oil Nanoformulations for Prevention and Management of Diseases

C. Vergallo

The scientific community is becoming increasingly interested in identifying, characterizing, and delivering nutraceuticals, which constitutes a multi-billion-dollar business. These bioactive agents are claimed to exhibit several health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of diseases such as arthritis, cancer, osteoporosis, cataracts, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s diseases, heart, brain and metabolic disorders, etc. Nutraceuticals are typically consumed as part of a regular human diet and are usually present within foods, comprising vegetable oil, although at low levels and variable composition. Thus, it is difficult to control the type, amount and frequency of their ingestion by individuals. Nanoformulations about vegetable oil-based bioactive compounds with nutraceutical properties are useful for overcoming these issues, while improving the uptake, absorption, and bioavailability in the body. The purpose of this current study is to review papers on such nanoformulations, particularly those relevant for health benefits and the prevention and management of diseases, as well as bioactives extracted from vegetable oils enhancing the drug effectiveness, retrieved through bibliographic databases by setting a timespan from January 2000 to April 2020 (about 1758 records).

An ML-style Record Calculus with Extensible Records

Sandra Alves, Miguel Ramos

In this work, we develop a polymorphic record calculus with extensible records. Extensible records are records that can have new fields added to them, or preexisting fields removed from them. We also develop a static type system for this calculus and a sound and complete type inference algorithm. Most ML-style polymorphic record calculi that support extensible records are based on row variables. We present an alternative construction based on the polymorphic record calculus developed by Ohori. Ohori based his polymorphic record calculus on the idea of kind restrictions. This allowed him to express polymorphic operations on records such as field selection and modification. With the addition of extensible types, we were able to extend Ohori's original calculus with other powerful operations on records such as field addition and removal.

Exact and heuristic approaches for multi-objective garbage accumulation points location in real scenarios

Diego Gabriel Rossit, Jamal Toutouh, Sergio Nesmachnow

Municipal solid waste management is a major challenge for nowadays urban societies, because it accounts for a large proportion of public budget and, when mishandled, it can lead to environmental and social problems. This work focuses on the problem of locating waste bins in an urban area, which is considered to have a strong influence in the overall efficiency of the reverse logistic chain. This article contributes with an exact multiobjective approach to solve the waste bin location in which the optimization criteria that are considered are: the accessibility to the system (as quality of service measure), the investment cost, and the required frequency of waste removal from the bins (as a proxy of the posterior routing costs). In this approach, different methods to obtain the objectives ideal and nadir values over the Pareto front are proposed and compared. Then, a family of heuristic methods based on the PageRank algorithm is proposed which aims to optimize the accessibility to the system, the amount of collected waste and the installation cost. The experimental evaluation was performed on real-world scenarios of the cities of Montevideo, Uruguay, and Bahía Blanca, Argentina. The obtained results show the competitiveness of the proposed approaches for constructing a set of candidate solutions that considers the different trade-offs between the optimization criteria.
