Architecture

S. Kimmel

This essay briefly examines the role of architectural history in María Rosa Menocal's effort to test the conventions of Romance philology. By drawing the familiar built environment into esoteric debates about language and literature, Menocal sought to render medieval Iberia more accessible to general readers and to create a scholarly space for interdisciplinary research that bridges peninsular religious and linguistic divisions. The result of this effort, particularly in the American academy, is today's medieval and early modern Iberian studies, where scholars enjoy greater flexibility in their research and teaching even while continuing to grapple with the theoretical and political risks implicit in Menocal's approach.

Weak Instruments in Instrumental Variables Regression: Theory and Practice

Isaiah Andrews, J. Stock, Liyang Sun

When instruments are weakly correlated with endogenous regressors, conventional methods for instrumental variables (IV) estimation and inference become unreliable. A large literature in econometrics has developed procedures for detecting weak instruments and constructing robust confidence sets, but many of the results in this literature are limited to settings with independent and homoskedastic data, while data encountered in practice frequently violate these assumptions. We review the literature on weak instruments in linear IV regression with an emphasis on results for nonhomoskedastic (heteroskedastic, serially correlated, or clustered) data. To assess the practical importance of weak instruments, we also report tabulations and simulations based on a survey of papers published in the American Economic Review from 2014 to 2018 that use IV. These results suggest that weak instruments remain an important issue for empirical practice, and that there are simple steps that researchers can take to better handle weak instruments in applications.

But it is still deemed “insufficient evidence to guide management” of asymptomatic fellow eyes in the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Preferred Practice Pattern for 2025. However, both focal and encircling prophylaxis for asymptomatic fellow eyes with lattice degeneration, and encircling laser prophylaxis for asymptomatic fellow eyes with attached posterior vitreous, now justify treatment consideration versus continued observation, based on the evidence we do have, even though it is not “level one”.Keywords: rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, RD, retinal detachment prevention, encircling laser prophylaxis, 360-degree laser prophylaxis, retinal tear, Stickler syndrome, SS

A Bayesian circular mixed-effects model for explaining variability in directional movement in American football

Quang Nguyen, Ronald Yurko

Change of direction is a key element of player movement in American football, yet there remains a lack of objective approaches for in-game performance evaluation of this athletic trait. Using tracking data, we propose a Bayesian mixed-effects model with heterogeneous variances for assessing a player's ability to make variable directional adjustments while moving on the field. We model the turn angle (i.e., angle between successive displacement vectors) for NFL ball carriers on both passing and rushing plays, focusing on receivers after the catch and running backs after the handoff. In particular, we consider a von Mises distribution for the frame-level turn angle and explicitly model both the mean and concentration parameters with relevant spatiotemporal and contextual covariates. Of primary interest, we include player random effects that allow the turn angle concentration to vary by ball carrier nested within position groups. This offers practical insight into player evaluation, as it reveals the shiftiest ball carriers with great variability in turning behavior. We illustrate our approach with results from the first nine weeks of the 2022 NFL regular season and explore player-specific and positional differences in turn angle variability.

How to Undo Things and Selves with Words: Understanding Literature as Praxis in Virginia Woolf’s Essays on Actresses

Caroline Marie

Virginia Woolf reflects on her own medium in relation to the notion of personality. This article reads her essay “Personalities” (1947), in which she explores the reader’s response to the personalities of writers, in light of three essays that discuss the art of acting embodied by three celebrated nineteenth-century actresses, “The Memoirs of Sarah Bernhardt” (1908), “Rachel” (1911) and “Ellen Terry” (1941). It argues that Woolf theatricalises literature to understand it through the art of acting, in particular the building up of characters. Actresses embodying nineteenth-century acting, Ellen Terry, Sarah Bernhard and Rachel, as well as Woolf’s contemporary Lydia Lopokova, whose performance is reviewed in “Twelfth Night at the Old Vic” (1933), mediate Woolf’s reflection on literature from different perspectives: writing with the body, reading with gestures, creating from anecdotes, and becoming other.

Gradient-enhanced sparse Hermite polynomial expansions for pricing and hedging high-dimensional American options

Jiefei Yang, Guanglian Li

We propose an efficient and easy-to-implement gradient-enhanced least squares Monte Carlo method for computing price and Greeks (i.e., derivatives of the price function) of high-dimensional American options. It employs the sparse Hermite polynomial expansion as a surrogate model for the continuation value function, and essentially exploits the fast evaluation of gradients. The expansion coefficients are computed by solving a linear least squares problem that is enhanced by gradient information of simulated paths. We analyze the convergence of the proposed method, and establish an error estimate in terms of the best approximation error in the weighted $H^1$ space, the statistical error of solving discrete least squares problems, and the time step size. We present comprehensive numerical experiments to illustrate the performance of the proposed method. The results show that it outperforms the state-of-the-art least squares Monte Carlo method with more accurate price, Greeks, and optimal exercise strategies in high dimensions but with nearly identical computational cost, and it can deliver comparable results with recent neural network-based methods up to dimension 100.
